My main course of sea bass was covered in a butter sauce which had cured under the heat lamps, the vegetables were overcooked, and the potatoes not worth eating. I drove here from Suisun City to surprise my sister and family who were driving back to Sacramento from SF. I recommended they go here for great food, rather than deal with parking and crowds in SF. I can't believe I failed to check-in. Anyways, The Dead Fish is one for the books. I loved everything about it! The location, the vibe, and most especially the food! First of all, it is a stand alone restaurant, it has a private parking lot with plenty of disabled parking spaces (love that)! Second, it's almost as if it is in the middle of nowhere but it's not. This restaurant has beautiful views wherever they seat you and the service is excellent. Then we started with an appetizer, we had the Crab Crostini. This is an excellent starter, it's like a teaser, it gives you a sample of what's to come. The crab tasted so fresh and to top it off with those baby tomatoes and olives were a good match. Since I'm a shrimp lover, I ordered the shrimp and mussels(medium size), FYI, it does not come with anything else. But there was plenty. I ordered a side of garlic bread and OMG, I'm glad I did. It went well with what I ordered and it was garlicky and buttery good! My friend ordered from the recently demised fish section and she got the Salmon with spicy ciopino sauce. Yes, I tasted it, the salmon was cooked perfectly. It was tender and not dry at all. The sauce was the "icing on the cake." They didn't have a huge selection on desserts but they have something for everyone. We ordered Chocolate Moose Bomb and Salted Caramel Vanilla Crunch Cake. We ate it all! I've heard so many great things about this place and I was excited and surprised by my husband with reservations for my birthday. Upon arrival you can tell this is a very loved and established location. There was a bustling indoors and we requested to sit outdoors as the weather was beautiful. We were greeted promptly and presenting menus and offered drinks. We requested water as well. My husband went with the large, cut a prime rib with the mashed potatoes and spinach. The mashed potatoes were the best I've ever had! I felt like the prime rib had a little bit of something missing, my husband agreed. I went with their seafood cioppino, which was absolutely amazing. I have to say this cioppino rival that of Tadish Grill in San Francisco the oldest restaurant in California. We shared the appetizer of calamari, which was perfectly seasoned and lightly fried. We also ordered a side of bread which was very fresh. Could use a little bit better butter. We also shared a beet salad, which I think was a little bit too watery for my liking. It had balsamic vinaigrette and blue cheese, which was a nice touch. Overall, this was a great dinner, and I can see why this is a local favorite. I visited The Dead Fish today around 4 PM with my kids and sister after not coming for a few years, and unfortunately the experience was extremely disappointing. We ordered the large calamari, the Super Combo (crab, shrimp, and mussels), a side Caesar salad, and two kids' chicken tenders with fries. All the food came out at the same time--only about 15 minutes after ordering--which immediately raised concerns about how it could be cooked that quickly. The calamari was cold. The Super Combo was dried out, as if it had been sitting under a heat lamp and then thrown onto a hot skillet just to make it sizzle. The crab was lukewarm and dry, and the shrimp were tiny--maybe 41/50 size. For the price they charge, I expected larger, better-quality shrimp, at least 16/20. Even the Caesar salad was a letdown. It was basically chunks of cheese with barely any lettuce, and it didn't come with dressing. I had to ask for it. Our waiter was very kind and apologetic, and we made sure he knew none of this was his fault. We'd never heard of the dead fish until recently despite its popularity. Our server, Jessica, was amazing. She was so friendly and attentive and went out of her way to make sure we didn't need anything. We sat by the window and the water views are stunning. We ordered the large calamari which was definitely excessive for two people. We also tried the crab Angel hair lasagna which was so unique. It's very rich and heavy so I'd recommend splitting it with a lighter entree, however, it's worth ordering. We also ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with crab which was a bit lighter and not super saucy. They didn't skimp on the crab either and all the seafood tasted fresh. For dessert we split the chocolate mousse bomb which had a nice crunchy texture to it. I've been coming here for over 20 years. Unfortunately, over the past couple of years, the preparation of some of the food has changed and not in a good way. Specifically, the crab cakes. While the cakes themselves are still very good and full of crab, the prep is awful. No longer served with a delicious aioli sauce, it now comes swimming in a pool of melted butter, green onion and bell pepper. It's not appealing or appetizing at all. It's oily and the peppers overwhelm the delicate taste of the crab. I had to put them on a separate dish and dab the butter off with a napkin and ask for some lemon wedges. Also, the skillet crab has bell peppers on it now too. Why?!?! The original garlic sauce was amazing. And the prices!!!!! To be fair, prices are up everywhere, but $70 for a crab? Insane! We love the ambiance and fun atmosphere and impressed with the view of the bridge and ocean where we were seated. Oh, and especially our server, the beautiful Jessica with such an energetic charm. Today I went to the Dead Fish and it was a great experience. Even making the reservation a couple of days prior was easy because they were so accommodating. I had made a reservation for 12 but it ended up being 7 due to people canceling at the last minute but their team was understanding and simply seated us in a smaller table. Usually it's only one or two who will cancel but this time was different, but again the team was flexible and were not upset. Everyone enjoyed their dish and the presentation was very nice. I enjoyed my crab enchilada even more than my last visit. I enjoyed it last time too, but even more today. Kudos to the person preparing the food today. Their bread was delicious, but I was bummed that they charge for it now. What made the visit extra fun was the manager who came to our table to ask how was everything. He was wearing a suit that was a beautiful bright blue. Very eye catching it was. He was super friendly and had a great sense of humor. My group really enjoyed him. He has the right personality for working with the public. Every year I meet with this group of friends. Having experienced good food and service in the past at this place, it is sad to see that the quality and the service have greatly diminished. It has been a few years now but that should not be the reason. The food was lacking flavor and quality. One of the items we ordered was fish and chips. Who decided to use basa fish instead of cod???? BASA fish is imported from Asia and it is banned in many countries for its high levels of mercury and industrial pollution. When farmed it contains antibiotics. Restaurants use it to cut costs. It is like catfish. I was not aware that this was used for the fish and chips dish. I would not have ordered it if I knew. The clams had a sad look and lacked that aroma and flavor that is typical of this dish. The crab was very small and not quite as tasty as it should be. The bread tasted like flour and did not have the favor of a well cooked bread. In the past that was a winner in the menu. Now they charge you for a few pieces and it is obvios that it was heated in a microwave. (bit chewy) Overall, we are not going back. Sad to see that the "DEAD FISH" is now really dead. Although, I saved the best for last...the shrimp and mussels skillet...WOW. We also got some Epi bread right in the beginning as we ordered and they were nice and warm and came out fast by Brianna! We were so hungry and needed a quick bite before the feast! She was our lord and savior! Entrees: I did some yelp searching and saw a lot of good reviews on the rib eye steak so I felt like it was a no brainer and ordered it! The mash potatoes were so good and had a good amount of butter and garlic. However, the spinach side was a disappointing...the side was missing heat. It was cold when served to me. Also maybe missing some flavor. I don't know I just felt like it was very lackluster, but everyone's tastebuds are different. I was just disappointed because I was really looking forward to this side dish. My partner got the crab lasagna, this dish was different. He said he enjoyed it...but I just think he was too scared to say it was nothing special and send it back to put it blunt. Definitely a really good take on redefining a lasagna and adding crab to it...I just don't know if I would order it again. It's like something you try and said you did it, but maybe not again? It felt like the heaters were on but the staff explained it's the tent cover trapping the heat in (black color absorbing the noon time heat). Despite the weather being a clear day and a good view the trapped heat was not comfortable (one ceiling fan to circulate the heat around). Service was ok, our table and several other tables kept having to look for our waitress (a large party asked to move inside and she spent a lot of time with them) which meant drinks were not refilled or even brought out and we had to ask the runners for assistance. I was really impressed with the decor and the view! It's like nautical meets old hollywood which is so my vibe, I was pretty excited to try this spot. I think this place is leaning into the decor and location more than the quality of the food. I think that they cater to an older crowd, the options are dated and limited and sorry but for the quality overpriced. Im sad to say that we did not enjoy anything we ordered. We started with a bloody Mary and a mojito, both were watered down and served without straws to stir. The bloody Mary was particularly a let down, it was in a wine glass that looked half filled with water and tasted like a whole bottle or worcester sauce. Next was calamari that was just nothing special. Then we shared a caesar salad and the blqck linguini chiopino. The caesar was also nothing special. When I asked the waiter if it had anchovy he said no, for a fish house that surprised me but I decided to try it anyway. The linguine was good but overall it was again nothing special. 2 crablegs, a few salmon chunks that tasted fishy and some clams/mussels that were just kind of whatevs. We decided to order some bread and had to ask twice for it. The bread was hard and stale. By now the Yellowjacket's were starting to swarm us and we just wanted to get outta there. Our waiter was nice but really didn't do a good job of describing the food or selling us on anything particular. I hate leaving negative reviews! A dozen oysters costs 50$ here lmao.
