If you're thinking of going, reservations! Or you can try your luck at the bar or there's the terrace outside. It was pouring rain when I went, so I opted for the bar and lucked out. Not tables available but there were a few open stools at the bar. Meaning, service was awesome. Sarita was my bartender/server. She was attentive, nice and full of information with my questions about the place. She made suggestions and pours a mean drink. Boozy is how I'd describe it and it went with my meal of read meat. Some seafood too. See pics. Food was great too. Beef served as requested. Rare. Opted for the Scampi - a little overdone for my taste but not to the point of chewing on rubber. Chose the Romanoff for one of my sides as well as the bread pudding for dessert. Let's just say I didn't finish it all. Enjoyed it heated up the next day. Have to admit, I was surprised it held up the day after. It's complimentary valet parking. Unless you want to park somewhere close by and walk. Finally made it and I wasn't disappointed. We went to dine at The Derby prior to attending the Santa Anita races. It was the perfect venue to get us into the mood. The prefix menu was a deal. Our server was amazing. He gave us time to enjoy our pre dinner drinks and appetizer prior to taking our dinner orders. No rushing. He answered all our questions about the menu items. Food was upscale with the meats being very tender. We had the LAdine menu and got the following: Salmon Atlantic: It was good, but not amazing. The salmon was a little overcooked. There wasn't any wow factors in the flavor. Green beans were cooked to perfection. (4/5) French Onion Soup: loved that it wasn't too salty (4/5) Prime Rib with mash potatoes: it lacked herbs and the mash potatoes were watery for my taste. However, the prime rib was very tender. (3/5) Alaskan Dessert: loved the meringue and ice cream with the presentation of the flame (4/5) Cheesecake: the best part of the meal! Wow! Checked out this place with one of my best friends for Dine LA Summer 2025 and was blown away by the amazing service, delicious food and lively ambiance. I've been to a similar place in the valley that is historic and is known for its steak but I have to say I prefer The Derby more. The staff was super friendly and attentive, especially when we had questions about other paired wine options for the entrees. Our server Adam was very nice, and made us feel right at home throughout our evening, making sure we had bread, and were ready our next entree/dessert. The place wasn't too dim/dark, and although the derby has been around for over 100 years, the ambiance was lively and busy with different folks from a broad range of backgrounds and ages. I thought the dine LA 3 course option for $67 per person was an amazing deal. We both ordered the Bacon Wrapped Filet Mignon per recommendations on Yelp and friends and it was definitely the move for our first time there! The whiskey bread pudding was warm and rich which was the cherry on top for a delicious meal. I can't wait to come back and try out their brunch as well as bring more friends and family! Shortly after my review, The Derby reached out to apologize and invited me back to make it right. While one might expect that from a restaurant of their reputation, in my experience it's rare. Plenty of companies talk about customer service; few deliver--especially after the fact. Their concern for both my satisfaction and their reputation impressed me. I accepted the invitation. Despite it being a busy night, I was treated warmly. Jennifer, the manager, went above and beyond. When we discussed menu options, she was refreshingly candid, some dishes were still being refined, others were good to go. I chose the prime rib, which I had considered on my first visit, and the garlic mashed potatoes. To say they delivered is an understatement. The prime rib was perfectly cooked and deeply flavorful, among the best I've had. Even the au jus was on point. The potatoes were savory and well seasoned. Where my first visit fell short of expectations, this one exceeded them. I was genuinely pleased and it was obvious that mattered to Jennifer. Will I be back? Absolutely. I'm happily adjusting my review to four stars. There are still a few details that need attention (that's where the devil lives) but they are aware of them and actively working to improve. This was our first visit on Easter Sunday. We went to celebrate my son's 22nd birthday. It was very busy and I am glad we made reservations. I ordered the 16 oz Prime Rib, Amazing! My wife had the Rosemary Chicken, Fantastic! My son ordered the Ribeye, Superb! My daughter ordered the Shrimp Scampi, Awesome! The staff were excellent. They know how to strike a balance between being formal and polite without being pretentious. Went for the first time with my family the day after Christmas. Pros: ambiance, appetizer, drinks Cons: entree and service We were sat around 5pm. Upon sitting, we were greeted and given menus. After that, our waitress didn't come back for at least 10-15 minutes to allow us to give our drink order. She then dropped off our drinks and left without asking if we wanted to order appetizers. Maybe another 15 or so minutes and she came back to allow us to order appetizers. Then after appetizers, we eventually had to flag her down to order our entrees. At this point our son was getting hangry. My son enjoyed his kid menu burger, our house guest enjoyed a filet entree, but unfortunately my wife and I were disappointed in each of our prime rib entrees; the meat was rather dry and very lean for a prime rib. Eventually we flagged down staff for refills on water and drinks, then when we ordered dessert with coffee, we never were offered more coffee until we were done and the check was brought. Overall the meal for 3 adults and 1 child was upwards of $450, which is fine but the prime rib quality and more so the service didn't align with the price this place is asking. Excellent service! Portion is huge! We each order an entree with soup and ends up with lots of leftovers. For thanksgiving special, you can pick either glazed ham or oven roasted turkey (with homemade cranberry sauce) as entree. It is served with traditional stuffing, candied yam, Mashed potato, and saute green bean. Other entree comes with a side of garlic mashed potato/baked potato/ wild rice pilaf. We all get a piece of garlic butter toast to start and a piece of pumpkin pie to end which are both inclusive in the set dinner. The only thing we order on top of the set dinner is the soup. The Derby is always a good time! They put up a lot of lovely Christmas decorations this year. If you reserve in advance, they are able to accommodate larger groups as well. Even with a smaller group, reservations are definitely recommended. The fillet mignon is my favorite because it is flavorful and finish-able. I find a lot of the steak cuts there, along with sides, are just too much food for me! Both times we have gone, our server has been great. They have been prompt and professional, but not stuffy and stiff. Tonight, they were even joking around about their least favorite soup flavors at the restaurant. Don't ever ever ever go on Mother's Day!!! For being a 104 yr establishment, it doesn't feel like a well oiled machine. We had reservations but didn't get seated until 45 min later! Once we placed our order it was an hour until we got our food!!! For the price the food was mediocre. The prime rib was good, the salmon was moist but the sauce on top was strong and salty and the carrots were withered. The waitress and busboy were nice but upon asking for bread only 1/2 slice was given per person, I think more should be given especially if they know service was so backed up. Management needs to hire more help especially for a day like Mother's Day!!! We won't be going back. read more

I've been to three steak houses thus far with the same type of atmosphere/theme and I can say the Derby was a let down. I understand restaurants get packed but it felt like our server rarely checked in on us. We didn't even know anyone had dropped our food until it came time for the check. After probably 40 minutes, they came to tell us that it was taking awhile because they were back tracked, which is fine, we understand that can happen but then to know it was actually because it was dropped was interesting. Then they also tried including the dropped food charge in the tip to make it an almost $160 dollar tip. In terms of food quality, it wasn't bad but it wasn't great. I definitely enjoyed Clearman's Steak House more. For the price you get more food and more flavor. The vibes also felt off because a lot of the people that go seem like the world revolves around them and can be so rude to the waiters. We witnessed a customer be rude to the hostess because she did not want outdoor seating even though that's what she chose on her online reservation. She then tried to use the "well I am a regular here" card. So ridiculous. Will definitely not be coming back. read more

The whole restaurant was packed and lively. But somehow, the service was extremely on point despite the busy day. Skyler was the one who took our reservation and seated us. She made our introduction to The Derby special, as she was very warm and welcoming. Aly was our server and was exceptionally attentive and friendly. For the meals, you can choose off the menu or order a Turkey or Ham special. Each special comes with all the normal Thanksgiving fixin's -- stuffing, potatoes, yams, green beans and pumpkin pie. The ambiance at The Derby Never Disappoints! Our first Thanksgiving at The Derby and it is official, it is going to be our new Thanksgiving tradition. We lost our mother last year on 12/31/23 and we spent the last 22 years going to pick her up, 80miles away, and going out to eat. She hated cooking but loved good food and dinning out. This was our first Thanksgiving in 22 years that we stayed close to home and without our mom. First words out of our mouths, when we tasted the food was, "mom would have loved The Derby", we, three grabbed our delicious cocktails and toasted to our mom's honor. From the ease of making reservations to the prompt seating when we arrived, we enjoyed every minute. The meal was both traditional and they also offered the usual prime rib and steaks. We opted for the Turkey Thanksgiving meal. It was a generous plate of succulent turkey and the best stuffing I've ever tasted. Included sweet potatoes , perfectly al dente green beans, a tangy home made cranberry sauce , mashed potatoes and decadent gravy. It was all so divine. We ordered a side of Marsala mushrooms (I almost sipped the juices from the bowl because it was THAT good). The pumpkin pie Made with love and you could taste every spice. The nightcap was The Derby's version of a spiked eggnog... oh my... I could have had three of these as my dessert...amazing. Our favorite part of our evening by far was Marta our server. She was cheerful, attentive, personable, and made us feel like we were her only table...and it was obvious she had many..yikes, the place was busy, but she made our dining experience memorable as did the rest of the staff, clearing plates, filling waters, etc. We've been to Ruth's Chris, Maestros , and others for Thangsving over the 22 years we went out wit mom. For my birthday dinner, my wife and I dined at The Derby last Saturday. After a miserable day of betting on the ponies at Santa Anita, we were looking forward to changing our luck at The Derby. But alas things started off REALLY bad. The Gods of intimate dining were not with us, and we were shown to a cozy table in a room dominated by a very loud table of 12. We tried to go with the flow, but after 10 minutes or so of not being able to converse without yelling over the ever-escalating din, I trudged up to the front desk and asked politely for another table in a quieter room. I got a courteous "not a problem," and soon we were seated along the wall in the room with the cheery fireplace. Our luck had changed! Our server, Aly, was poised, humorous, and a pleasure to interact with. Starting out with cocktails (dirty Martini $12, Secretariat Manhattan $16), we checked out the menu, and suddenly realized that, after a full day of Santa Anita food, neither of us were in the mood for the Prime beef and other assorted viands that make The Derby famous. So we faced a daunting task: How to piece together a non-meat dinner at a famous steakhouse. But I'm happy to say that The Derby's menu was deep enough that we were able to craft a perfectly delicious repast: Green Goddess Salad ($16), Crispy Brussel Sprouts ($16), Fried Derby Calamari ($16), Pepper Crusted Tuna Salad ($28) , and the killer Jumbo Grilled Asparagus ($14).
