This place is a Gem you wouldn't expect to find of all places, in Joshua Tree. No offense to this community, but when folks mention Joshua Tree, what comes to mind is NOT what is found at The Dez. My family and I were more than pleasantly surprised when we walked into this establishment. The choices of quality coffees, espressos, sandwiches, wraps, paninis, pastas, deserts, and drinks, and other merchandise, was like instantly walking out of the desert, right into a gourmet market, deli, cafe. It was wonderful! I think we went back there more times than any other eatery during our few days stay in Joshua Tree. Even our grand-kids enjoyed it. There was a selection suitable for any palate. And the staff; they all were incredibly friendly, funny, and helpful. You can't and won't go wrong with The Dez if you're in the area of Joshua Tree. Cute little coffee shop, perfect for grabbing your joe to go. They have some pastries too; danishes, croissants, the usual suspects. Less usual is the Sausage Roll, a chicken frank wrapped in pastry. Coffee and breakfast are where it's at, but but they do have some wraps and little salads to go. But be careful if you plan to let them sit - many things have mayo, and I wouldn't recommend leaving them in your car while you explore the park. So breakfast is by far the best, but I do think the Dez is the best way to start your day. read more

Great place to pick up anything you need for a picnic in Joshua Tree. They've got baked goods, like croissants and sausage rolls, and hot and cold sandwiches, like roast beef and turkey sandwiches. Everthing we got was satisfying, fresh, and tasty. They carry Stumptown Coffee (in case the lines are even longer at Joshua Tree Coffee Co across the street). I tried their delicious and slightly sweet date shake. Whiie the lines can sometimes be long, service is efficient and it's worth the wait. When we visited, it was only a takeout joint, but they look to soon be opening a bigger sit down place just a block away on 29 Palms Hwy. read more

This was a great little find - located very close to the West Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, it has great sandwich and coffee options. I went to the small takeaway location (only 4 people allowed in at a time). I loved the lox and bagel & chai, but the real surprise was the tiramisu! Light, fluffy, flavorful - I would come back for that alone! (And...realizing I did go back the very next morning on my way out of Joshua Tree, to get a coffee and bagel for the road, I'm kicking myself for NOT getting another tiramisu.) I thought it tasted okay and for the price, ehh I could probably go elsewhere. The roasted Turkey and provolone on a croissant tasted good but about an hour later I didn't feel so great. I'm not sure if it was the cheese or what, but I had it in a cooler bag so not sure what happened. The other sandwich we got, Genoa Grinder was good according to the person that ate it. It consists of salami, ham, mozzarella, provolone, red onion, arugula, and tapenade (a mix of veggies) on a baguette type of bread. He felt fine after eating his sandwich. There was a long line to wait for sandwiches and coffee. The sandwiches were pre-made but they also sell coffees and breakfast. Considering the nearby restaurant wasn't taking any takeout orders at that time, I noticed a good portion of people coming from that direction. We had the Grinder and Turkey and Swiss. Both so flavorful! Inside is small, so place your order with the crew, take one of the pagers and wait outside for your food! Probably my favorite thing about this spot was the service! All of the staff we engaged with were so friendly and sweet, including one of the owners. We had been traveling for several days at this point and it was so nice to have a fresh and healthy meal. There were lots of vegetarian options to choose from as well. The Dez, please do better. This happened in November 29, 2024. There was a line outside the store and we absolutely don't have any problems with that, knowing the store is pretty small and only serves to-go items. What's unacceptable was, my friends and I ordered 5 paninis in total, and it took them literally 40 minutes. This guy who took everyone's order can apply for another job because he clearly wasn't happy doing his job. Literally letting a big SIGH and his forehead all frowned while taking people's orders. I was observing him right when we went in the store and him getting orders of people infront of us. We were told it'll be 15minute wait and we didnt have any problems with waiting for our food. We understand, there was bit of a line for their small sized cold and 'panini pressed machine' sandwiches. But the line was gone and everytime customers open the store door and we see the 5 employees behind the counter just laughing and chatting knowing we've been waiting for our small paninis outside for almost 40minutes was unacceptable. We went inside and asked about the status of our order and was said it's still in the works. Literally the group of people before us got their food within 15-20 minutes but ours took 40mins? And right when we asked for the status of our order they literally just started making our orders. HERE'S WHAT'S REALLY UNACCEPTABLE: the guy(blonde long hair see picture) who made our food argued with us since we frustratingly asked about our paninis and told them we were waiting for 40mins for it already. Instead of apologizing and hearing the customer's side, what did he do? These are the words that came out of his mouth VERBATIM. "Are you gonna let me do my job or are we gonna keep arguing?" "If you didn't argue with me it would be done 30 seconds earlier" "here's your food, now you can leave" LMAO REALLY? Like it's our fault that we waited 40minutes for our overpriced mini sandwiches? There's literally 5 of you guys laughing and chitchatting behind the counter but started with our food ONLY when we asked about it. You guys are literally just behind the counter and saw you just started with our food orders right when we asked about it. It would've been okay and we would feel less frustrated if he just said 'sorry we'll make your orders right away'. But what did he do? He rudely argued and didn't take any responsibility. To the employees that work at the DEZ, I hope they find the job they really enjoy because the way the employees give out looks to the customers, it's giving "why are you guys here, we don't want you here".
