Service: was amazing. I stopped by at 8:10 am on Monday (eve before Christmas Eve) and a lady staff opened the door and told me "good morning, welcome" she took my order immediately. I ordered a peppermint mocha, spinach quiche and a cinnamon roll. When my order was ready she brought everything to me while I was sitting at the table. Unfortunately they can't cafe-operate their way out of a wet paper bag, which results in a ton of mixed orders, delays and frustration. My daughter and I (we are locals) stopped into the Dez the small Dez not the cafe and ordered sandwiches to go. I asked if they could make me a cheese and mustard sandwich and they said, "yes". We took the sandwiches into the park as we were going on a hike. When it was time to eat and I opened mine up, to my astonishment my sandwich only had mustard on the bread. NO CHEESE, just mustard. I have never had such a good tuna melt sandwich EVER. I love this place so much, it is small so it gets crowded but people are nice and wait outside before going in. Cute little coffee shop, perfect for grabbing your joe to go. They have some pastries too; danishes, croissants, the usual suspects. Less usual is the Sausage Roll, a chicken frank wrapped in pastry. Coffee and breakfast are where it's at, but but they do have some wraps and little salads to go. But be careful if you plan to let them sit - many things have mayo, and I wouldn't recommend leaving them in your car while you explore the park. So breakfast is by far the best, but I do think the Dez is the best way to start your day. read more

We got the dirty chai iced latte, two sandwiches. The dirty chai iced latte was basically the chai with a shot of espresso. I thought it tasted okay and for the price, ehh I could probably go elsewhere. The roasted Turkey and provolone on a croissant tasted good but about an hour later I didn't feel so great. I'm not sure if it was the cheese or what, but I had it in a cooler bag so not sure what happened. The other sandwich we got, Genoa Grinder was good according to the person that ate it. It consists of salami, ham, mozzarella, provolone, red onion, arugula, and tapenade (a mix of veggies) on a baguette type of bread. He felt fine after eating his sandwich. There was a long line to wait for sandwiches and coffee. The sandwiches were pre-made but they also sell coffees and breakfast. Considering the nearby restaurant wasn't taking any takeout orders at that time, I noticed a good portion of people coming from that direction. Great place to pick up anything you need for a picnic in Joshua Tree. They've got baked goods, like croissants and sausage rolls, and hot and cold sandwiches, like roast beef and turkey sandwiches. Everthing we got was satisfying, fresh, and tasty. They carry Stumptown Coffee (in case the lines are even longer at Joshua Tree Coffee Co across the street). I tried their delicious and slightly sweet date shake. Whiie the lines can sometimes be long, service is efficient and it's worth the wait. When we visited, it was only a takeout joint, but they look to soon be opening a bigger sit down place just a block away on 29 Palms Hwy. read more

This place is a Gem you wouldn't expect to find of all places, in Joshua Tree. No offense to this community, but when folks mention Joshua Tree, what comes to mind is NOT what is found at The Dez. My family and I were more than pleasantly surprised when we walked into this establishment. The choices of quality coffees, espressos, sandwiches, wraps, paninis, pastas, deserts, and drinks, and other merchandise, was like instantly walking out of the desert, right into a gourmet market, deli, cafe. It was wonderful! I think we went back there more times than any other eatery during our few days stay in Joshua Tree. Even our grand-kids enjoyed it. There was a selection suitable for any palate. And the staff; they all were incredibly friendly, funny, and helpful. You can't and won't go wrong with The Dez if you're in the area of Joshua Tree. This place makes delicious warm breakfast paninis. Plenty of bacon, egg, and pesto to start your morning right. They also make great cold sandwiches - perfect to take into Joshua Tree National Park. We had the Grinder and Turkey and Swiss. Both so flavorful! Inside is small, so place your order with the crew, take one of the pagers and wait outside for your food! This was a great little find - located very close to the West Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park, it has great sandwich and coffee options. I went to the small takeaway location (only 4 people allowed in at a time). I loved the lox and bagel & chai, but the real surprise was the tiramisu! Light, fluffy, flavorful - I would come back for that alone! (And...realizing I did go back the very next morning on my way out of Joshua Tree, to get a coffee and bagel for the road, I'm kicking myself for NOT getting another tiramisu.) They had a wide variety of refrigerated bottled drinks available to purchase as well. It is definitely a quick grab and go type of place as the shop and only fits a few people at a time. We decided to stop by to grab a quick coffee. There was already a long line outside but the coffee was well worth the wait. I ordered an iced vanilla latte ($4.75) and it was delicious! I had a terrible experience at Dez Fine Food and honestly, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. First off, the staff were incredibly rude. From the moment I walked in, it looked like the employees didn't want to be there. To make matters worse, I ordered few simple sandwiches that took 45 mins. After reading several of the low ratings, this seems like a recurring issue and the owner seems to be the problem as well. read more
