Unfortunately, we received our food BEFORE our drinks, silverware, and condiments. Seriously. Yes, we were shocked too. Working in many, many restaurants, we understand the urgency to "get the food order in" because ticket times can increase quickly when busy. Per our server's recommendation, we ordered our drinks and food altogether. This time, however, servers dropped (understatement) the ball. We had three different servers approach our table during our "meal" (unsure what to call it); 0/3 could explain why we received our food before anything else, where anything (including our main server) was, or if the items were on the way. Zero apologies, excuses, or explanations. After our food came first, we kept asking different servers and managers for the same items over and over. Food was below average, cold (by the time we received silverware), and overpriced. We'll chalk up the Diner's mistakes to current staff shortages. However, it'll be a LONG time before we're willing to give the Diner another try. read more

If you've gone out to breakfast enough times in NW DC you've come into contact with the Tryst family of establishments. A handful of diners and breakfast spots scattered across the city with the same basic menu items switched up a little bit. Each one has its own vibe (and quality of service) -- picking your favorite Tryst trading co. location might be akin to a horoscope. For me, Tryst itself comes the closest to being the ideal execution of whatever their big idea is. Right down the street from Tryst, just a few doors down, is The Diner. An interesting little spot, it fills a niche that holds a special place in my heart -- a 24 hour diner. Sort of shocking to me that it's the first I've known about in the area, but it's been there for a while so I guess they cornered the market. Just to get it out of the way, the food is great. I've done traditional breakfast foods here and I've done cheeseburgers and haven't been let down yet. That being said, where this shines is in the uniqueness of a full kitchen that's open past midnight right on 18th. As a brunch spot, it's just so-so (hence my middling rating... saying "it's fantastic if you go at 2am! Not so much at 11am" isn't 5-star material). It's laid out in a way that maximizes space, which means if it's busy you're going to be elbow to elbow with the people on either side of you, and my god is it LOUD. The food is great, but it's hard to screw up eggs, toast and sausage, and I could make it at home for less or go to Tryst for a slightly nicer experience. But boy oh boy does this hit past midnight. The atmosphere in the post-midnight hours on a weekend is fun and eclectic, almost like you walked into a staff party and they're nice enough to both let you stay AND serve you. I went after a night out in Adam's Morgan and chocolate chip pancakes were exactly what I wanted. The food is simple and well made, the service is quick, and the space is casual and relaxed. This place is a little bit cheaper than a lot of the places in adam morgane. The breakfast is OK and we can eat a lot here for less than $40. On the other one I have had some negative experiences with the service. One weekend when I came to find a crowded restaurant and decided to sit outside, despite telling everybody that I was sitting outside and wanted to be served, nobody came for 15 minutes and I eventually left the restaurant. Today, May 4 I walked in in the morning around 7 AM and waited for around 10 minutes and had to ask one of the three people who were loitering in the restaurant to please take my order. It seems that. Was not the top priority. Another day I had to remind the waitress to return my change. I know it is not easy to serve people at 7 AM, but they could be a little bit more attentive. Also the machine to heat water was broken, and the waitress decided to go to another venue to get hot water, which is sort of observed. read more

This is your typical diner experience. Big basic menu, quick and speedy service, good food! There is plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. Super casual ambiance. Seating: They have a couple of seating options: inside, counter, or outside. Food: The was good. They have a variety of options. I ordered a veggie omelette and my friend ordered the western omelette. The home fries were seasoned well.. I'm a sucker for potatoes! Coffee: it get's the job done, but it's not the best! It was fun finding a traditional diner in DC. This place was cute and comfy. Service was excellent. I ordered the grits which were yummy and buttery. I got the hash brown bowl with no eggs and that was an interesting dish. It filled me up but was a tiny bit bland (maybe it counts on the eggs). Parking however is a nightmare and I would only go here again if I was taking the metro over. It took forever to try to find parking, we hopped out to get a table which took about 30 mins, and in that time our driver ended up just grabbing a quick bite elsewhere because nothing opened up within a mile. This place is so welcoming. Both times we came while in town, the hosts and waitstaff were friendly. The music is on point. The food is surprisingly good to be diner food and based on other reviews and comes out quickly. For breakfast, I had the Migas. Delicious, no notes. My mom had scrambled eggs, chicken sausage and oatmeal. She said, "the eggs were outstanding" well prepared...fluffy, perfectly cooked. You're going to the Diner to have some solid diner food, drink some bottomless coffee, and debrief the night before with friends. This place has become a staple in my weekly routine. The veggie omelette which is filled with spinach, feta, tomatoes, and mushrooms, has simply never missed. Paired with home fries, the meal consistently keeps me full for 4-6 hours. The best part about the Diner is you can sit at the bar and talk to your friend for one hour, then two, and never will you be made to feel like you need to leave. The place is yours to share. Decent diner food, not so good service. 1st trip was good food and decent service, so decided to go again before catching our train back home. 2nd trip, not so good. Both got the two eggs any style. Asked over medium and they came out whites still runny. Both the home style potatoes my husband got and the tater tots that I got were cold. We asked for new ones and were given our old ones back saturated in grease after just throwing them back in the fryer. My tots had some of my runny egg fried on them. Was so crowded that they were not taking orders (no problem, must be good, took seats at the counter and waited until the kitchen was caught-up). When we were able to order, I had the Classic Reuben, my daughter had a vegetarian plate, and her boyfriend had a turkey club. By no means the best Reuben I ever had, and, actually, competes for the worst. Definitely had too much butter on the grill, pressed flat, no sauerkraut to speak of, corned beef was relatively tasteless, and cheese was so thoroughly melted that the meat slid out of the sandwich, didn't taste (couldn't find) the dressing. Only received half an order of fried pickles (which were very good) but, because of the size of the order, paid $2.50 per pickle slice - Yikes! Turkey club was passable, but not great. These quite extraordinary place found in this district was quite a fine. Initially looking for a salvage restaurant which currently closed down we were looking for alternatives. Ultimately we came in for greeted and offered a typical American diner menu but with some exquisite changes to some of their products. As I came with my family they all had different options. One ordered a cheeseburger with bacon called the cowboy burger they loved it. My daughter had the chicken sandwich which is a chicken fried sandwich was for the chicken was because of the bun, enough said about that it was incredibly delicious according to her. I myself have a great turkey club sandwich which was well prepared and a soda fruit which I enjoyed which was a great variety of fruit offer. I spoil myself with a vanilla milkshake which was incredibly well done and nice and thick like you expected. Love this place love the service it was quick and delicious highly recommend it. On the way into DC my boyfriend and I wanted to stop at this spot for lunch. When we arrived it took a little time to find parking. When we walked in they told us we can sit anywhere. Emmanuel was our server and he was good. We started with cocktails and I got the Bonecrusher and it was tasty. For my meal I got the chicken sandwich and it was so good! Awesome place with breakfast and late night grub. It has many greasy classics with some healthier stuff. The Diner is an Adams Morgan institution. Fair prices. You get a good amount, whether it's eggs or tofu. I stopped in with friends early. It serves breakfast all day and is always open. They also have lunch and dinner menus. Breakfast food for a vegan is hard to come by. They have several choices here, which is why it's one of my favorite breakfast places. I had the tofu scramble, which was as good as always. It's about $10 for a large portion and comes with grits or home fries, and toast. Others had typical breakfast stuff like pancakes and waffles. All seemed happy with their choices. The prices are higher than cheap ass chains but good for a trendy neighborhood like Adams Morgan. Inside the restaurant seems just a little grimy. On the counter were lots of sticky spots, and there was quite a bit of garbage left on the floor. The food overall seems to be good, and I would like to explore beyond the breakfast menu the next time. read more

To get good food 24 hours a day is any night owl's dream. I have been here once before during brunch and absolutely enjoyed my food. We were seated immediately when we arrived and our waiter came over quickly to greet us. I like how they take order on an iPad and you can pay your bill on the same thing. It made checking out very smooth and quick. The food was pretty good. I had the 2 eggs your way breakfast. Pretty standard and nothing special. We got there around 12:30 pm on Sunday and it was packed; however, we were able to grab a sit at the bar. You should expect 15-30 min wait for a table. It has an old retro style similar to traditional diners. I think over the weekend The Diner stays open 24/7. I ordered the Banana bread French toast , home fries, and pork sausages. The Banana bread French toast were five medium sized slices of banana bread, think of French toast sticks. The French toast was delicious. It had pieces of banana inside the bread with banana, strawberries, and pecans around the plate. The home fries were plain and unseasoned. I didn't like them. The 2 pork sausage were jumbo sized and tasted good. The service was good at the bar. We had two bartenders that were attentive and helpful to us. There's three tv's in the room but one of them at the bar wasn't working properly. They tried to put a NFL game on but the picture couldn't come up. read more

I used to patronize this establishment several years ago. I remember particularly liking the chicken sausage option. This time I dined with my youngest child, a toddler. She loves pancakes and boiled eggs. So we had just that and I added chicken sausage (I wanted the patty like I used to get several years ago) which were links and an order of grits. The pancakes were just ok, the grits were lukewarm and the sausage was just ok too. With the meal that I ordered, I received an English muffin with two jelly options. The English muffin was the most enjoyable part of the meal for me. My youngest child ate a good amount of the pancakes but I had to prompt her to eat. Usually, if food is good she'll eat on her own without any prompting. I tasted the pancakes and I was like WTH? They both were slightly bigger than saucer plates and the $15.50 meal only came with two of these saucer size pancakes. I ordered her an apple juice which was more than $3 for 8-10 ounces. Our meal came up to $20 and some change. This is ridiculous. I got to Murry and Paul's in Brookland and 3-4 people can eat off of one of their breakfast platters for less than $14. I'm talking homefries, breakfast meat, pancakes and eggs whatever way that you prefer them. These pancakes at Murry and Paul's are huge and delicious. I understand that Adams Morgan real estate is more expensive than Brookland but not that much more in my opinion. We all know that breakfast is cheap. When establishments price gouge on breakfast platters, I'm always left in a state of confusion. This is a diner! Not a five star restaurant. Might I add that my daughter and I shared a platter. We didn't have separate meals and I drank water. Like I said she mainly ate the pancakes and her boiled eggs. I mainly at the English muffin, chicken sausage and grits. This was not worth $20 plus gratuity ($5 is what I tipped our server). This reminds me of Miami prices on south beach or Collins Avenue for breakfast. I went to this establishment on my lunch break at 03:00 in the morning because it was one of the few places open that late. Upon arriving when I walked in it did not look very busy I so I seated myself at the bar with what appeared to be no server in sight. None the less I wait about another 10 mins and I see to males walk over to two tables and service them so I have recognized they were the two males who stared at me when I walked in but didnt say anything so I didnt know they were employees. A couple minutes later a caucasian couple walk in and sit at the bar, one of the gentleman immediately greeted them with menu's and ready to service them, meanwhile literally nobody said a word to me. This gave me the impression that this establishment does not want my patron nor the patronage of people who look like me a person of color. I will be sharing my experience at Uncle Tom's diner with everyone I come in contact with so they dont have to experience the horrendous display of racism in the of 2025 or ever. read more

Where can you find menu variety and accessibility? The Diner of course! Now I have a confession. Despite The Diner being like a DC staple AND me being like a DC native, I had not been until this year. Whaaat? I KNOW RIGHT! But once you know, you know! Okay, so as I mentioned, the Diner has a lot of variety. They serve breakfast all day (win) and have a great mix of comfort food and even lighter dishes. If you're vegetarian, dishes can be adjusted, which is a huge plus (I believe that's true for vegans but I cant fully recall.) So far, I've had an omelet and on another visit, the Cowboy chicken that I modified with no issue. Service was quick. Even on a busy Saturday afternoon, the wait was less than 10 mins total. We had the same server the two weekends I went and she was cool. One visit I tried being all fancy and ordered I drink I ended up hating. She saw I literally only took two sips and just took it off the bill. That's looking out! Anyway, anytime in in AdMo, the Diner always be an option.
