I love everything about this recent find which has become a new favorite. Not new but new for me, and so good I've been there three times in the past week since finding it. Every Friend I've gone with loved it too. Kitchen is open later than many places, until at least 11pm weekends. Ambiance. Amazing. Comfortable and inviting whether inside and outside. Outside seating with retractable awnings, layered dark brick, and lighting which creates a warm comfortable ambiance. Everything about the Inside is wonderful eye candy for a visual person - spacious, high ceilings, interesting lighting and architectural details, fresh flowers. Great for a date or dinner with friends. Service. Attentive and friendly servers each time. Food and drinks. Mezcal old fashioned was well made and every dish was fantastic: - Tuna tar tar. Big chunks of tuna, delicious. - Steak. Tender, topped with mushrooms and onions, mashed potatoes and tasty spinach on the side: delicious! - Brussel sprouts with a spicy kick- so good! - Calamari with a tasty sauce - Stuffed chicken special with mozzarella, mushrooms and a tasty gravy. Above all else, a corner bar in the heart of the upper east side. I personally love the look and feel of The District. Honestly. You walk in and feel like you're in a hometown bar surrounded by friends. The drinks, solid. For a rainy Sunday in NYC in the fall, nothing but a frothy Guinness will do and it did just fine. The appetizers: hummus and French onion soup, good. The burger and salads with salmon, also good. You won't fall backwards off your chair but that's not what this place seems to be. It's homey and home to the locals. Give it a try for some day drinking or while catching a game simply for the the scene, ample TVs and ease of entry. read more

I've been coming here forever. While I agree the service is slow and the servers can be more attentive. The drinks and food always make up for it. Anything I've ever had to eat has been awesome. typically do not give five stars, (mostly because restaurants rarely show that they are five star worthy) but I had to make an exception for The District. This has been one of my best dining experiences, (and first of the year!) First off the service was wonderful. Also, it is clear that the staff works hard to make sure customers have a safe and fine dining experience despite it being a pandemic. My friend and I ordered the mac and cheese appetizer and it was absolutely divine! We both ordered the chicken parmesan and linguine with marinara sauce and it took everything in me to keep from dancing in the middle of the street (probably would have been a good idea, it would have kept me warm in the bitter cold.) I can't wait to come back again, hopefully once it is safe for indoor dining to start up. The only issue we had (which was no fault of the establishment) was the cold. It is hard to enjoy a meal when you're freezing your butt off but that is what happens when you go out to eat in January during a pandemic. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a place that has a range of different types of food, all done well. I came here with a group of friends for brunch and we had a nice spot with a long table in the prime location. The interior was really nice with deep brown and red color scheme and wood/oak furnishings and details. The food here was very tasty, but the service was definitely lacking. I'll start with the good. There were 2 items on the menu that I liked the sound of - Pork sausage pie and Skillet Steak and Eggs Frites. I decided on the latter and was happy with my choice. The steak and eggs consisted of french fries on the bottom with 10 oz blade steak underneath eggs whichever way you prefer, tomatoes and onions on top, along with 2 pieces of toast. I ordered my eggs completely cooked, but they were served to me over-easy. I had to wait a bit to get the waitress's attention and it took awhile for the eggs to get back to me the way I requested. Other than that, it was DELICIOUS! The steak was wonderful: Incredibly juicy, flavorful with great seasoning and went together beautifully with the eggs. The fries were also yummy and the portion size was great. I was able to take quite a bit home to enjoy later. Onto the service. The waitress seemed very nice and eager to please, but she didn't come to our table that often (even though we were situated right across from the bar and right in the thick of things). There were several times that we needed something and we would try to flag her down to no avail for several minutes. Unfortunately the overall experience at The District was meh for me. The server directed us (a large group) from the bar towards the back of the restaurant which was pretty emptied. Since the seats by the bar were filled up as many watched the football game on the TV monitors. Definitely the restaurant was very short staffed with one server and a few busboys running the food from the kitchen. Holy moly it was soooooo difficult to flag our server down #unbelievable! When we finally got her attention, we quickly ordered our food. Our table was the least and neglect with no refills on our waters...SMFH! And the FOOD took the longest to come to our table grrrr! I ordered a well done of Steak Benny and the Eggs Benedict were cooked to perfection as the yoke flows over the steak and english muffin and the potatoes were too damn crunchy...food was good! Service fucking horrible on a busy Sunday Brunch...the worst thing I had to yell at the busboy not to take my friend's plate because she wasn't done...I hate being ignored grrrrrr! You should always ask before assuming the customer is done with their plate...common fucking sense! Don't over tip your server because it's already included on the bill. I met some friends here for bunch today, while the company and conversation were great, the experience The District gave us was less than stellar. Aesthetically, The District is very nice - it's bright, open, with a good amount of tables and a nice bar lining the left wall. They had Edison bulbs hanging from the ceiling, with mainly dark woods and reds throughout the restaurant. Their brunch menu is extensive - with apps, salads, entrees, egg dishes, and desserts. I was feeling breakfast so I decided to have one of their egg dishes and chose the breakfast panini. The sandwich had bacon, spinach, fried egg, and Swiss cheese pressed on a kaiser roll; it was served with a side of potatoes. The sandwich was okay - it had good flavor but the bacon was cut really thick so it was hard to bite though - it was also super fatty. I didn't like the potatoes, they were way too well done for me - I like them crispy but not *that* crispy. Service wasn't good - it took a long time for our food to come out, and it was near impossible to flag down a server. Maybe they were short staffed? Besides our server, the only other people I saw on the floor were busboys. Either way it was a miss for me. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for service, but the food wasn't good enough to me to want to come back here; there are better options elsewhere for brunch - you're in New York City for Christ's sake. read more

I've been to The District three times now, the first two times for drinks only so I felt like I hadn't experienced enough to justifiably write a review. The last time was for brunch with my family. There is a stark lack of decent brunch places on the Upper East, so we decided to try The District because at least it was close: First, I'll mention that the first two times I came they were out of several drinks on their cocktail menu. They probably had about ten to a dozen drinks listed, and the first time it was almost comical- I asked for a drink and nope, they were out of it. Okay, I said, how about this one? Nope, that one's out too. Fine, I guess I'll just have my third choice....oh, you're out of the ingredients for that one as well? I'd love to know what exactly they DID have stocked behind the bar, because it couldn't have been much. I ended up just getting a beer, and my boyfriend got a tequila-based drink (I believe it was like some version of a Cosmo made with tequila instead) and we didn't like it- it was way too sour. The second time we came they were still out of all of their ingredients (seriously, either restock those or change the menu) so we left. We were attracted to it again for brunch with my family because of the reasonable prices and the fact that my sister, a vegan, was able to find a soup on the menu that fit her dietary needs and that sounded good to her. It was a black bean lime soup, and was probably the only thing we ordered that ended up being good. I ordered a burger with fries and was asked how I wanted it cooked. I asked for it medium rare. Now, I don't really understand what the point in asking is if you're just going to cook it how you want anyway. In the defense of The District, this happens to me all the time- I'll ask for a burger medium rare and get it well done. Literally no pink in the center at all. The bun was also stale and the meat wasn't flavorful. The fries were good, but let's be honest, fries are nearly impossible to mess up THAT badly. Another weird thing is the fact that you get a free drink with brunch, a fact we only knew because of my fellow Yelpers (thanks, as always). Seriously, no mention from the hostess, waitress, food runner, etc, plus nothing on the menu that says a free drink with an entree. It's bizarre. My boyfriend and I got mimosas and my dad got a virgin bloody mary. Granting this place two stars instead of one because it wasn't a TOTAL abomination- the hostess was pretty flexible in getting us a table outside, and the soup was actually really great, but I won't be planning on going back. There is one dish I particularly enjoy at The District, to order in or for takeout, The Steak Salad. tasty steak in wonderful salad enhanced with Gorgonzola cheese. Tonight as I called for takeout was startled it's price had gone up over $2. Also, after delivery l, to discover that over half the piece of steak was obviously grizzle and unchewable fat. It must have been obvious to any chef before preparing. I called to complain. The woman hostess on phone was sympathetic but after consulting with management she simply told me no replacement could be expected. I told her I would not be trusting them again. Obviously from my record of orders of that particular dish and frequency of my orders and visits, I was really frustrated and annoyed by their reaction and -- face it -- stupidity disrespecting such a frequent customer. Lauren, Kenny, Marcus & Zen really bring the place to life and are great at their jobs. Arrival: I came here at 7pm on a Monday night with a party of 20 people. The place was pretty full with people who were both dining and at the bar getting drinks. Food/drinks: To start off the meal, we ordered wings, hummus, and spinach and artichoke dip as appetizers. For the main course I had the burger. The burger came with SO many fries (I could have had an entire meal of just fries, seriously), and it was a pretty good burger. I also ordered the Chardonnay to accompany my meal. Oh man I really wanted to like this place smh. 3 stars for the ambience and decor + effort but the food...sadly was not good. I ordered the chicken and steak quesadilla which comes with salad. First off, please to the people who work here - STOP serving the quesadilla with the salad on the same plate!!! The salad dressing makes the quesadilla so soggy!! Also - please please use some seasoning (lol shout out to adobo!) on the steak and chicken - it was so bland. As for the hot sauce - it was good just a little watered down. The steak and eggs were ok, but the steak was overcooked to well-done despite being ordered as rare. The sandwiches and burger were probably the best choice. Overall it was okay. The price range is average for NYC. Drinks: Included brunch drink with every entree! Can never go wrong with the mimosas for brunch! Included drink includes bellini, mimosa, bloody mary or IPA beer. Otherwise the cocktails were average priced with $8 for the brunch cocktails. Vibes: Very sports bar vibe. Somewhat dark interior but does have some outside seating which is nice for a good day (like spring weather in January!). I also liked the interior decor and its quite roomy and spacious which makes a great spot to hang out with larger groups of friends. It can get loud at times, especially when there's a game going on but still a decent brunch spot. Service: Appreciate the service despite our big group. At first glance it's a nice looking place and one that is sorely needed up in this higher part of the UES/Yorkville area. It's an upscale looking joint but I feel they are still trying to figure out if they want to be a beer bar, cocktail bar, or gastropub. It's one of the best looking bars in the hood, and feels a bit shabby chic, eccentric, rustic and classy all rolled into one. That is why maybe I can't put my finger on the disconnect here. It features a wonderful decor, outdoor seating, and looks like a great spot to have brunch which we have tried on a few occasions. As with others here I felt the service was spotty and it's almost as if they are either overwhelmed or just unattentive. Sad, because this place is very comfortable and has a lot of potential. Kind of pricey here for the food quality which could be stepped up a bit, especially when charging this much for an area that is not really an upscale clientele hood. Underwhelming is a good word to describe a meal experience here. You won't hate it but you won't be wowed either as I was with my eggs benedict brunch and just ok bloody mary. I have had the burger here which is actually pretty good and pairs well with a Smithwick's or Ommegang Hennepin which they have on tap. Beer selection features around eight on tap and is pretty standard overall with some crafty choices. This place is good in terms of the location, food, and selection. However, every time I have gone the service has been very unorganized and understaffed, which has resulted in EXTREMELY inattentive and slow service! The staff is friendly enough. There just isn't enough of them. Their drinks are meh. They are average. Just stick to beer and wine. Cocktails aren't overly inventive or sophisticated. But the food is decent. I've been to the District a few times now since it's close by to where I live. If I had to describe it I would say it's sort of like an upscale sports bar 'sporting' a nice ambiance and laid back atmosphere. I basically come here when I want to enjoy a drink/meal at a nicer place than the local pub but don't want to change out of my workout clothes (which is all the time). While the servers and bartenders don't check up on you that often, I've always had an easy time getting their attention, and they never rush you out. The price point for the food is on the higher end of the mid priced bars around the area so I wouldn't exactly say it's overpriced but it is a few bucks more per entree you would normally pay for a casual brunch or bar food. At the very least, I've found that whatever entree I order is usually pretty solid/decent. On the other hand the wine bottles are surprisingly affordably priced and the portion of the sides, especially the fries, are very generous. read more

We were sat in an extremely uncomfortable spot next to some very loud men, but I wasn't even that upset about that given it was a busy night. the server did not seem to care less about our presence honestly. It took forever to get our food and when we did, mine was bland and burnt (I ordered the salmon) to the point that I had to wash the taste out of my mouth with water. I requested if I could send it back and get something else and the server very pointedly and in an unbothered manner said i couldn't unless "there was something wrong with it". My colleagues also had complaints about their food. She then ignored us long after and we waited very long to get our bill, which she would not split and had an undeserved tip already included. So I paid over $30 for a horrendous meal, a headache, and bad service. :) I had good company though so I guess there's that. idk it just seems like the kind of place that has its regulars and so doesn't really care about pleasing or retaining new customers.
