Half a dozen for $6! First time going and we were very impressed! The donuts are moist and you can tell they are made fresh daily. Salted caramel maple and velvet sour creme were my 2 favorites. I was amazed at how the sour creme donuts were not dry at all. Only bummer was we got there around 930am and all the "fun" donuts were gone. I saw they had an Oreo and captain crunch much earlier and that would have been nice to try. Next time I guess we go sooner. read more

I am by no means a donut expert but I do enjoy a good donut every once in a while. I have lived in Royal Oak for 5 years and just recently heard about the Donut Cutter??? I drive by this little place all the time but never thought twice about it. Well now that I have tried it, I am definitely a fan. We got there around 8:15 on a Sunday morning and there was a line of about 5 people. The line moved fast so no complaints here. There was a huge selection to choose from, something for everyone. We ordered 2 powdered sugar donuts, a chocolate Bavarian creme, a red velvet, a pumpkin spice, a Fruity Pebbles, an apple fritter and a twist donut. That came to $9 and change. I usually love my Bavarian creme but it was only just okay in my opinion. However, I tried the apple fritter and the twist. Holy donuts they were good! You have to really like sugar though because they both are super sweet. The red velvet was very light and fluffy. The pumpkin spice was flavorful. My son loved the powdered sugar donuts. I think they are reasonably priced (although again I don't go to many donut shops). There is a small seating area if you want to dine in. Overall I really enjoyed the donuts from this little place. If you go here, do not pass up the apple fritter or the twist donut. They are a little more expensive than the regular donuts but boy is it worth it! read more

I showed up at 4:00 in the morning when they open to experience their famed apple fritters and was told they don't have them until 7:00am. I wasn't all that impressed with their donut selection, they open at 4 but are not at full strength then I found out. I bought a few to go anyways. They were wonderful. Best donuts I have had since the last time I was at a cider mill. Very delicate but probably loaded with calories. Two days later I came back at 7:00 am. I am a nite owl not an early riser. Much larger selection at 7:00 than 4:00. This time the apple fritters were just out of the oven. They were warm, melted in my mouth and lived up to their fame. I highly recommend this place if you love donuts. Ive been to alot of the famed donut shops in the Detroit area, and these are the best. read more

Before I came here, I was very solidly a cake-donut only kinda gal. Then I tried their yeast donuts. Holy hell, I could eat a plain ring with absolutely no toppings whatsoever. Om nom nom nom! Donut Cutter is the BIZ! This place is ridiculous! We were headed to Vegas suuuper early, so we stopped by DC at 5am. The smell was absolutely intoxicating! Up until that point I had been debating making another stop at a bagel joint, but the smells convinced me to stay! I wanted an eclair but they didn't have any stuffed donuts yet (sniffle) so I went with a chocolate chocolate and a blueberry donut. They were both still warm and just melted in my mouth! This place is awesome. I imagine this is what the first Dunkin' Donuts looked like before it became a global force. Except The Donut Cutter has much better donuts. There is a sheer simplicity to this place. Plain decor. Plain tables. One dude behind the counter. Lots of neighborhood folks reading the Sunday paper when we came in. And, of course, the donuts. These donuts are fresh. You will probably shove a glazed donut into face hole in about 2.5 bites. The hours are weird here: 4 AM to 3 PM. Get there as early as possible. The earlier, the fresher. The custard donut is excellent. The strawberry donut will give you a sugar rush. The apple fritter is bigger than your head. One to three donuts are an excellent way to jump start the day. Four or more donuts are an excellent way to ensure peak uselessness. Either way sounds glorious. read more

DC's chocolate-dipped crullers are my favorite but I have yet to try a bad donut from this place. If you get there early enough (or what I consider late enough since its usually 4 AM when I am walking through their door and still haven't slept) you can sip on fresh coffee and watch as they make donuts through a window right in front of you. Possibly the best donuts I'll ever have in my life. My 2 faves are red velvet and cotton candy, but by the cake consistency that I've experienced from flavor to flavor you really can't screw up. Long overdue review but these apple fritters are still the best I've ever had. Crisp enough on the outside to hold in one hand and the o so perfect combo of sugar and cinnamon. I think it's the right design to go for less height on these, I've had many competitors end up with too much dough on the inside which tastes dry to me. These however, are perfection. read more

Best donuts I've ever had. My bf and I stopped here before the Woodward Dream Cruise and it was completely by chance. He had fresh cinnamon donuts and I had chocolate dipped... Not only were they extremely fresh, warm, with a crusty outside and super soft, fall-apart-in-your-mouth inside, but the store sells skim milk and that's an A++ in my book. It's extremely difficult to find any donut shop that sells milk lower than 2%. We found an AMAZING donut shop that sells even skim! I had a weekly routine that involved the amazing apple fritters here while pregnant. Right up until I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and had to stop carb-loading. They make the most amazing donuts & fritters here. The fritters are my fave, they are crisp on the outside & still soft on the inside. Not to mention that if you are careful & have tremendous willpower, they are big enough to feed 2 people or last 2 days. Again, Willpower. You may have to arrive early to get good choices, because this place is a local favorite & it's frequented by staff from nearby Beaumont Hospital. I've often brought donuts home for my mother when she watches my twin babies for me, and she says most donuts are so greasy that her stomach hurts after eating one. According to her, The Donut Cutter must use clean oil everyday or healthy oil, because she never has a problem after eating them. And she's been witnessed eating more than 1! read more

I've managed to live within 4 miles of the Donut Cutter and never visit it for 20 years. Boy was I missing out! I arrived late in the morning and Bill opened the door for me. I know it was Bill not because I know Bill but because the regulars at the coffee bar and the staff know Bill. Bill joined some other regulars including a group of older women with laptop computers at the bar. They are regulars. I like a place with regulars even if I'm not one of them. Delicious donuts at a great price. We stopped by here one day on our way down Woodward for some mid-morning donuts. It is a small, quaint shop, but that wall of donuts just makes your mouth water! Apple Fritter. Because everyone commented on the goodness of THE apple fritter. I had to try it and this is how I feel about it: I don't have to EVER go ANYWHERE else and order an apple fritter because I genuinely don't believe that it could get any better or even match the epicness of THE apply fritter from Donut Cutter. It is a decent size. It's mildly greasy (yum) and just packed with flaaavor. There are apple chunks throughout the fritter rather than just concentrated in the middle like other lesser options. I just all around enjoyed the fritter experience. Oh, and I also had the red velvet donut, which was EXCELLENT. I loved how I could taste the chocolate and it was just the perfect cakey texture.
