Always a good choice and delivers (especially when you pick up)! I called in an order on Sunday at 5pm for pot pies on Pi-day, 3/14. Not only did they have them available, they were delicious. We got one of the steak'n'stout and one of the chicken. They came with mashed potatoes, gravy and a side of peas. It was a great meal. Ashley helped me over the phone to order easily and was even more amazing in person. The order only took about 20 minutes and was so easy to pick up. She helped pack up the order swiftly and gave me the push I needed to purchase dessert. The butter cake with fresh scooped ice cream was amazing. Finally, I hope life gets back to regular soon, but I also hope that cocktails to-go remain forever. My wife and I came here for lunch on Saturday. Kevin B's review put it on my radar and Michael P's review sealed the deal. Even though from the outside this looks like your standard bar inside your transported to South Africa with artwork, animal hides, and even animal heads. I admit, I've driven by many times, saw it as just another sports bar (which just are not my thing) but, I was wrong on so many counts. As to the samosa, I'm used to the East Indian version; but the South African samosa with the lamb served we had last night is every bit as fine. The main course for me was the salmon complemented with the pasta with pesto sauce and sun dried tomato. First rate. Ania had the meat loaf. Two thick slices--one for last night; and the other to enjoy at home this evening. The Eldo is much better than many restaurants that are pricey. And the portions are generous, to put it mildly. Generally speaking, I'd give it a nine out of ten. The cheesecake, however, gets a straight ten. read more

As a Long Beach Rancho resident I am really glad to see the Eldo back in business. I really did love this place when it was a dive, but now appreciate it for what it has become -- a great place for food, drinks and sports. Everything I've had on the menu has been good if not great. Escargot with freshly baked roll great, Bouillabaisse tasty, the perfectly cooked burgers are calling my name weekly, and their Peri-Peri wings have to be some of the best around. Another big improvement here is their beer selection. The old Eldo only had stale Bud Light and Shock Top on draft, now you can chose from about a dozen drafts and craft beers including Czech beer Staropramen and one of my personal favorites Ballast Point's Sculpin IPA. I will easily give this place a fifth star if they could bring back the quality live music they had at old eldo, and also include a happy hour and some daily specials. read more

Great local bar and grill! The place was packed and the drinks are good and reasonably priced! I hear the food is good, but, will reserve my final star for when I try their grub. Live music was provided by a band named "Whatever" and they did an awesome job! The waitresses were keeping drinks coming and doing an excellent job. I really loved that the sodas were free refills. I never drink and drive...I always get a DD even if it is one beer. So, to be able to sip sodas all night for about $2.50 is awesome! How did I not know about this place! It is less than 5 miles from my house and I have driven by it countless times. I need to make-up for lost time. I had the Boerwors roll and an order of wings. I've been to South Africa and can vouch for this sausage. It is right on time. Melts in your mouth with that authentic SA flavor. I wasn't expecting much from the wings, but they are as good as any in OC/LB area. My wife tried the fresh fish (Sole) and loved it as well. Next time I'm going to go for the Boersburger...same idea as the roll but bigger. Service was great and this place seems to be full of happy locals....now I know there secret! This bar has changed a lot over the years. The food has always been good, but it had an older crowd in the past, so I didn't visit very often. I started visiting again mainly to watch the Angel games and have a beer. They have a Czech beer called Staropramen that's very good. However, I soon realized I was making new friends each time I was there. Both the staff and the customers are very friendly. Alison was particularly energetic and fun behind the bar tonight, but she admitted she was being influenced by Red Bull! Just visited Eldo and am consistently impressed with the level of service we receive. It is simply best in class, and is only exceeded by the quality of the food they serve. More often than not we get the French dip sandwich, which is quite possibly the best in Long Beach. The atmosphere is great, somewhat dim and comforting. Bartenders are phenomenal, servers spectacular (tonight Bree helped us and she was exceptional), and the management is attentive and extremely aware of what is going on in the restaurant. Tonight, as an example, there was one particular table that was complaining about service (the same exceptional service we received by they way) and Mike, the manager, spent no less than 15 minutes listening to the patrons and trying his best to accommodate their requests and understand their position. Having witnessed it personally, they were very unreasonable and ultimately could not be appeased. Still, Mike remained calm and professional throughout, much longer than I would have expected. It's been nice park on the border of Long Beach in Los Alamitos. I can tell by the cars in the parking lot it is in the 50's and over crowd. And it was just that. They dominated the majority of the bar so I decide to sit in a restaurant area which is on the border of the bar area. As I look at the arts around I see stuffed fish I don't know what in the world that is...... A cow?? The skull of an animal that has antlers and then another, poor Pumdaa, and then we see something that just doesn't match with the rest of the decor. African art! The bartender, owner, cook,,,,,,, someone is from South Africa, thus the Peri Peri sauce on the menu. which reminds me of a type of lightly spicy mole. The waitresses are 1/2 dressed but genuinely friendly. The jack and coke was Perfect. Price - Decent. When I walked out and looked back, both waitresses waved bye. Awe! How often does that happen? Normally this would be 5 stars! Maybe they have a new cook? The food has been less than "Eldo perfect" my last two visits. Otherwise, this place is awesome. In fact, I've never been to the same restaurant so many times in a row! We usually try lots of places, but the Eldo has been so reliable. And it's our go-to when we want to take someone to dinner. We are there all the time! Last night we took friends there for their first time. We had a reservation. The staff seated our friends, who got there before us. And then they were totally cool about moving us when I realized I'd made the reservation short one place. The drinks were perfect! Try the Cucumber Crush! The service was quick as always, though the waitress didn't know what kind of dish was in the fish and chips when our friend asked. It's a small enough menu that wait staff should know these things. But she was perfect aside from that! I assured my friend that the fish and chips was really good and even ordered the same thing! And that's where things went downhill. The other meals at our table were perfect. But the fish and chips dishes, not so much. I think the temperature of the fryers was a bit high as food was well fried (a bit dark but not bad) on the outside, but (while cooked through) soft inside. My fish was the worst. One piece was just fish mush inside of really crispy batter. Not flaky as fish should be. I switched to another piece, and it was better, but not up to their usual par. Fries were also a bit soft. There's always at least one fish and chips at our table each visit, and it's always really good. Last night is the first time fish sticks made at home would have been better. Also, this time and my last visit, things seemed over-salted. The pesto pasta with salmon was good, but a little more oil than pesto. Again, not quite up to our meals in the past. I'm hoping it's a fluke. Maybe they have a new cook? If so, I hope they get him or her up to their standards. I'd rather have the food take a little longer getting to the table and be top notch than feel like it was rushed and sloppy. And no, I didn't ask for a plate. We had two plates of fish and it was later in the evening. It would have taken too long, and ad it is, we were some of the last people to leave. And I really try not to be "that person" unless it's absolutely necessary. I know folks have off nights. She is great, very attentive, great personality, extremely patient, fabulous service! Brandon love his beer selection, I had vodka pineapple and collins, Lee had champagne. We are food critics! The sausage was delicious and the lamb. We were a little disappointed with the peri peri liver, Lee said it was too heavy and a little over cooked. We ordered the platter for a variety of the South African food, calamari great, did I mention the sausage with tomatoes and onions delicious and the South African beef jerky must try. For dessert the milk tart was yum, can't wait to try the other desserts. Saw my landlord eating at the table next to us, that was great! They do have live music, pretty loud and crazy. We wanted a table change since the covered area was loud and were seated next to a large party. So they chose another. We asked if we could sit at one of the small round table and were told that they were all reserved and only for larger parties. Well, no reservations showed-up and we were stuck next to a screaming toddler. At the conclusion of our meal, the host passed by and we indicated the empty tables and the party of 3 seated at one of them. She looked at us muttered whatever, laughed and walked away. What a great way to help the wait staff as the check arrives. We left her a great tip. But all agreed to never patronize the Eldo again. And we are very local. This was not the first bad experience we had with the host. We figured that they must be related to the owner. Else why would you sabotage your wait staff in that manner. Unfortunately after yesterday's service. I will not be returning to the Eldo for multiple reasons. I have had multiple birthdays. Never an issue with decorating or sitting 15 min early to set-up. Well apparently the manager Robbie is against decorations and informed me "if anyone asked I would of not approved it- you did it in the past without my consent. I've been here for 15 years and would never allow this" the attitude of their manager was strike 1. I've never had an issue with sitting early (15 min prior to dinner and the hostess with the shaved head was BEYOND RUDE, strike 2. Every-time I do come in. She seems to be working minimal anyway) last but not least, we always advise of splitting checks- yesterday the attitude of our server David. Seemed annoyed and didn't want to serve us because of the check splitting, Strike 3. Done with this establishment. Hopefully you can learn to appreciate customers who come and spend well over $600 in a couple hours but apparently they don't give a damn. read more

To start our service was bad, maybe our waitress was having a bad day and that showed with a horrible attitude and she was UN-apologetic for everything! The food was awful!! We love the Eldo. This is one of our regular spots. Food is consistently good, prices are better. Service can be spotty, but today we had Valerie and she truly made our experience great. She was so accommodating... always making sure our bottomless mimosas were refilled and dealing with our check split 4 ways. Absolutely excellent! My only beefs with the Eldo are the "breakfast menu" until 11:30 on the weekends. This is only because the lunch menu is so good!! I cannot be limited to only breakfast! My second issue is that they had the BEST BLT in Long Beach on a homemade roll and they recently changed things up to put it on sourdough. First and foremost let me start with Mike the bartender. Polite,professional and full of personality. I loved him and you will too. I ordered the chicken strips with Cajun mayo and omg it was bomb. So tender and spicy but sweet. I couldn't get enough. I also ordered the stuffed mushrooms which comes as a bread and mushroom serving. With cheese. It's overwhelming but great. Next I ordered the fish and chips. Holy crap. Best fish and chips I've ever had IN MY LIFE. crisp, fluffy, moist and just freaking amazing. I'll say it again.... best fish I've had. Even in Arizona. My first time at the Eldo was this past Wednesday, and the food and service was top-notch. Special shout out to our server, Ashlee, who was so attentive, accommodating (some of our party came at different times and we moved tables), and had the best attitude, even though it was very busy. The rib-eye was excellent. It was a little pricey, but so are all restaurants these days. I brought half my meal home so still a good value. I will definitely be back. My suggestion is to ask to sit in Ashlee's section, as she is top-notch! And Wednesday has a special: half-off bottles of wine! read more

Been coming to The Eldo for a couple years now but have never ordered togo. Ordered the Bunny Chow and the Tavern Burger tonight and I have to say you can see and taste the same love that goes into making a togo order as you would a dine-in one. Service:excellent, food -from order to stumble stuffed and satisfied from table: outstanding selection, beautiful presentation, flavorful, fresh and delishous, drinks: definitely ample and tasty. Restroom was the only reason for hesitating to give 5 stars but it was clean. Just a little funky smelling. This was a wonderful find.
