I've been looking for a new stylist for over 6 years, since my gal of 25 years retired. It's been hit and miss. Often when I found someone I liked, they move on to another shop, so I'm off on a hunt again. I saw the 5 star Yelp reviews for Mai at The Expert Cut, so I decided to give her a try. I always come in with a picture, many times I feel that the pics aren't even looked at. The stylist sees a pixie style and goes about doing the basic easy cut, without any consideration for my hair thickness or texture. Not the case with Mai. She actually looked at the picture, discussed it, and understood what I was looking for. She took her time, was precise in the cut, and used a razor to give the style a more natural look that I love. Mai doesn't deserve the 5 star ratings she gets! SHE DESERVES 10 STARS! She's a gem! I actually am looking forward to my next cut. I highly recommend Mai, I don't think you can go wrong with her. Just one more suggestion. Pay with cash, rather than a card. Small business owners are having a tough time, and not having to pay extra fees to have a bank do nothing more than push a button to transfer a payment eats not only into their profit, but it raises the price we pay for their services and goods. read more

This was my second haircut at Expert. The first one was pretty well done, but a bit short, which I mentioned to the gal, who was friendly and competenet and who said she would remember for the next time. This second time I got another barber, who was also friendly. She asked how I wanted it. She seemed competent and to be working fairly quickly, so I was lulled into paying less attention. In fact, she completely ignored what I told her and sheared me like a sheep, WAY further than I had indicated. She had proceeded in layers, which is why I was slow to notice what she was doing. Suddenly I watched her cut off all of my sideburns (she had never asked where I wanted them), and then bizarrely and very quickly, WITHOUT EVER ASKING, trimmed my eyebrows! I'm 75 and have never in my life had (or wanted, or needed) my eyebrows to be trimmed. I've had had the occasional barber ask if I wanted them trimmed, and thought the idea was weird and amusing. But having someone do it to you without your consent, it's weird but feels somewhat like being violated. How long does it take for eyebrows to grow out? Mai was super nice and quick and I left with a better haircut than I thought. Hair does grow back but a bad haircut for curly hair can ruin a day. I told her take 2" at least and layer it. I've given up trying to find a hair stylist I actually liked, and to my amazement I found Mai today. She actually put thought into how minor cuts - even if just by a quarter of an inch - would frame my face, and suggested trimming my bangs little by little so that we could discuss as the process went on. Also I've moved out from the Bay a while back but will always make a trip here to get my hair colored. It is my first time returning to the salon since the beginning of the pandemic. I tried this place for the first time this past week looking for a decently priced hair cut, and even though I was a little hesitant because not everyone knows how to cut curly hair, I was pleasantly surprised with my results. Mai cut my hair, and did a really good job with adding layers. If you have curly hair, I would definitely recommend coming in with your hair already brushed out and/or wet since they will brush out your hair dry or with a little water, but the customer service is amazing! read more

I'd give this place a zero star if I could. Yelp, why don't you have a zero star rating? You should! Anyways, I came here the other day to get my hair flat ironed for an event. My go to stylist I've known and trusted for years, Juran wasn't working that day so I had no choice but to find another place for the time being. My hair is naturally wavy and is more frizzy than nice wavy and I don't have the patience or expertise to straighten it well enough on my own. Anyways, things started out great. I got in right away and my hair looked awesome after the Asian lady there who's name I forgot was done with me. I DID tell her that I didn't have much time to spare twice nicely. She said no problem at first. I then said that I needed a manicure too and she said that she'd do that. Well, after I got my hair done, this guy came in after me and got a haircut. She said it'd only take five minutes so I said that's fine. I timed her and she did a full hair cut on him so it took about 20 minutes for her to be done with him and before she was, I got fed up and just paid her after that. I left no tip of course. I did give her a tip though about customer service by saying: "It's first come, first serve, and I was here before him". She made no apology and just smiled. I told her that what she did was rude and unprofessional and that I'm never coming back there. I don't think he had an appointment, and even if he did, she never told me that. So I went to my regular nail salon to get my nails done and the woman there told me that she would've done the same if she was me so I know that I'm not overreacting here.
