Looking to celebrate the end of a long year, I ordered the 10+7 from the Fat Fish. 10 pieces of catfish and 7 prawns with french fries. The food came in a huge paper box (it was compostable, which I prefer over plastic) and was overflowing with fried goodness. They told me 15-20 minutes and it was ready right at 15 minutes, which I appreciated because I was squeezed for time. I got the food to my car and had to tear into a few pieces in the car before I got home to the fam. It was hot and delicious. Agree with others that it's not greasy at all. Cornmeal coating is crispy and well-seasoned (not overly salty, which is good so I can add tartar sauce and hot sauce to it). I can see why some folks were hoping for thicker fillets of fish. The thinner pieces were drier but when I ate it pippin' hot, the skinny pieces were still tender and juicy. The thick fillets of fish were divine. By the time I got home (30 minutes later), the fish was still warm (good for my son) and I reheated some of it in the toaster oven to get it hot again. I had so much food that it will make for another meal or two for the three of us. I can imagine that the leftovers will be dry so next time I might just order enough to eat while it's fresh and hot. read more

So I came here and ordered a 12piece red snapper and prawns. Spent 75+ dollars and got home and realized the fish was split in half. They took whole pieces of fish and cut them in half and still sell the half slices of fish for full price. Don't get me wrong, the fish is good, but not worth the scamming they're doing to make money. I attached photos which are supposed to be four pieces of fish but are only two pieces of fish cut in half. Very good for the right price. If your craving some good ol' seafood southern style. I would come check this place out. I ordered the snapper and prawns and some catfish. I will say I am impressed. For the amount you pay the portions were huge and a healthy amount of fries to go along with your meal. The fish was cooked perfectly and the fries were seasoned right. I'm picky with catfish and I will say they cleaned it well with no gamey taste just good fillets. They also offer tartar sauce, ketchup and hotsauce with bread on the side with your meal. The facility is nice clean and customer service was excellent, the employee working the counter was really nice and welcoming. Would I recommend this place for some good seafood? Yes. Came to The Fat Fish tonight about a half an hour before close. There was one woman at the register and one cook and the place was fairly busy - about 10 people (which is busy for a small place like this at closing time). The woman at the register is literally the hardest working person I've ever met. In the midst of taking and packing orders, she was also cleaning up and closing. She handled everything with grace - took out the trash, fixed orders, delivered drinks, etc etc. We had to wait about 10-15 minutes for our food which was completely understandable and acceptable. Got home, tried the food and had to immediately write a review. It was SO GOOD. And so worth the wait. We got fried catfish, prawns, fries and hush puppies. 2 combos with 2 sides of hush puppies - about $30. We'll definitely be back. And please give that woman a raise!! Let me get my minor complaint out of the way...they use generic ketchup and hot sauce and I always eat my fish with Tabasco or Crystal. But whatever I ate all my food and it was delicious anyway!! I find that large portions make me useless at work so I opted for the $5.25 Fat Fish Special (2 pieces of catfish and fries, but there are other options for that price). Unbelievably NOT greasy!! I was amazed. Fish and fries were well seasoned and cooked perfect and my fingers weren't an oily mess. It's a decent portion for the price and it didn't take long for my order to be ready (mind you I went around 12:30). A part of me is sad I didn't order more, and also sad I didn't have bread with my fish. I love this place! The catfish is really fresh and crispy, albeit not particularly spicy if that's what you're looking for. I also tried the fried shrimp - good enough but the thing that keeps me coming back is the catfish. I had an amazing (like wow!) shrimp po-boy somewhere else in Oakland but I can't remember the name now.. :( in any case, lately I can't stop getting the catfish sandwich. the owners and staff are super nice - notably nice compared to most places. parking can be weird in the middle of the day for some reason, but after 5, it's easy and free. Pros: great portions at good cost. Friendly service with a high chair available for our little girl. Tasty food. Cons: no public restroom. I got the prawns and fries with light spicy seasoning. So surprised how much we liked the thicker cut fries! Hubby got the catfish with coleslaw. Coleslaw was just ok. All else was good. I am glad that people enjoyed their meal here. Unfortunately for us, we had a very disappointing experience. We ordered 2 combos: 1) 4 pc snapper and fries and 2) 2 pc snapper and 4 pc fried oysters with macaroni salad. We also ordered a side of jalapeno poppers. The fried snapper pieces were fishy that they were not edible. At first at thought that my BF was just being picky. I tried his and mine, and they went straight to the compost bin. He said the fries and macaroni salad were tasteless. He had no complaints on the poppers and I liked the oysters. We took ours to go since it was a chilly day when we went. Fried goodness no doubt! I got pollock and oysters and they threw in an extra piece of fish. There a several aspects of fried fish and The Fat Fish gets them right. First, HOT oil please to ensure the results are not oily. Second, good breading that comes out crunchy. Third, don't overlook the food. No frills super tasty fried fish. Waitingoutside can be a bit sketch but typical for the area so be sure to wait in your car. My mom was craving this and it's so hard to find a place that's good and doesn't fry in dirty grease so I was happy to say this place checked al the boxes. We were pleasantly surprised! We got the oysters, shrimp, catfish and snapper and everything was fried perfectly. Seasoned just fine , and not too salty. They have several different combinations for you to choose from. You can choose fish with prawns or oysters. But I just wanted fish and chips. You have a choice of fish as well - catfish, tilapia, snapper or pollock. So I went with the 8 piece catfish with chips. I asked them to make the seasoning (its a cornmeal batter btw) a little spicy. There's a lot of food in the 8 piece catfish order, and 3 people with moderate appetites could easily share this. They offer tartar sauce, hot sauce or ketchup with the food if you want. They seem to fry the fish right when you order so it comes out piping hot and so crisp. The smell is so delicious. We took our order to the nearby HoiPolloi pub and as we took the food out, several people turned to eye our food, and yes of course we shared. It was so good. Perfectly fried, crispy outside, tender fish inside, nice tartar sauce. I am salivating remembering it! Another time I was there, I tried the coleslaw which I didnt really like as it was too sweet. This was my first and last visit to this place. Let's start with the gud stuff..the customer service was great and the dining area was clean. I ordered the 4 piece snapper and a 4 tilapia both with fries. The fries had great flavor both fish choices were awful. The cornmeal was dry and the fish was tasteless. I've had better way better. The tarter sauce is sour and more mayonnaise than anything. One piece was ate from the orders and the rest was trashed. Hopefully things improve but I won't be back to find out. read more

Last time I had fish fry like this was in Mississippi! Oooooo WE! I devoured a 2 fish and 2 prawn combo as if my mother didn't teach me table manners. It was a total massacre, it didn't stand a chance. Once I laid eyes on the flaky crisp goodness of a fried force field of crunch hiding the softest snapper to ever encounter my mouth. Super good burgers! I'm glad they changed the name and style of the restaurant. It's clean, both in design and actual cleanliness. The menu in streamlined-- thank goodness! The Mexican food before was down right nasty, but I'm glad to see the owners taking in the criticism and making a better restaurant. I decided on chicken tenders and fries. 3 piece and Hand full of fries came to about $11.50. I will never I REPEAT NEVER order again. The skin slid right off of the straps.
