Adequate. If you are in the neighborhood and really craving fried fish, The Fat Fish is adequate. The batter, while not offensive in anyway, was not interesting. I found it relatively tasteless and forgettable. Service was very slow. Seemed like a lot of people were waiting with arms folded for their take-out. The slaw was boring - too sweet. I heard one customer spend at least a few minutes trying to figure out what to order,...contemplating the various specials and what would be best deal for her family. This is really a three or four star review The food was prepared quickly . The french fries were good the coleslaw was good the tartar sauce is good The fish was not greasy I think it is air baked with a really nice crust. Parts of the fish when I bit into it tasted fishy. Kind of unpleasant taste I'm not sure this would be worth a redo. read more

My boyfriend and I came here two days ago and we ordered fish (alaskan Pollock) and prawn meal and the prawn and chicken meal. I ordered a strawberry mango smoothie and he ordered a Oreo shake. Overall the food was very mid. The drinks were the best part of the meal. The shrimp was just OK. The fish tasted very rubbery and old. My boyfriend said the chicken was OK but we've had better at the MB liquor store down the street. Everything just lacked flavor, even the fries. The inside of the shop is very cute but the service is very slow. We literally waited over an hour and paid $57 for mid food and for that reason we will not be coming back. read more

Good country style fish weather you want it Cajun or regular you can get it here and it will hit your sole the right way. Fish and wings both and they were some of the best I have had around Berkeley! Little hole in the wall mom and pop shop can't beat it! Very friendly staff even worked with me to create an order that wasn't on the menu! read more

Oh SO good! My husband and shared a Pollock and Prawn Combo, and we just inhaled it. The fish had a perfectly crisp texture, and the flavor shone through. The French fries were delicious. And the best part? I can't believe I'm saying this about a fish and chips place, but the food was NOT greasy! I normally love my dipping sauces and ketchup, but everything was so good I barely added any. Definitely check this place out. Friendly service and great food. read more

Pretty decent fried seafood. The prawns were quite excellent and the batter wasn't overpowering at all. The catfish was quite good and the meat was nice and light. I really like the way they fry it here since its not too heavy like some other places. The side of potato salad was okay, nothing special. Its fine though, the highlight was definitely the seafood. read more

When I went to Fat Fish they were getting ready to close. The staff was more than willing to work with me. Food did take a bit longer than quoted to arrive, but only by a couple minutes and they were extremely busy. Even so the food was fresh and really good! read more

by far the most horrible,disgusting,and overall no good quality food. im not sure if the oil was changed or if they are using fresh fish but it tasted sour and rancid. im having terrible stomach pains for eating this food. the portions are super small its laughable. this is not the fish spot to go to. dont waste your time eating here. the best part of my meal was when i threw it away in the trash. 0/10 read more

This was my first and last visit. Very disappointed. I got skinny fish and skinny prawns fried to a crisp. Not worth $18.00 for 2 fish and 5 prawns. My husband got the fish and oysters. He threw his away. When you charge these prices the food should be edible. Overall a waste of hard earned $50 bucks for dinner. I'm so upset I didnt go to the store and buy fish to cook. I certainly can cook it better than they did. Don't waste your money! read more

I got the #1 pollock and oysters. And I must say I'm very pleased. The cornmeal coating is just right and flavorful. The pieces are big. Not greasy at all. Pretty much similar to how i make it at home. So i will definitely be back. read more

My new job is in the area of S. Berkeley, and I passed by Fat Fish for the first time. It is a take-out out only joint, and clean establishment, not your average hole-in-the-wall, staff was friendly. I ordered catfish n chips, and it was delicious!!!! Both items were well seasoned, not overly salty or greasy to taste. The fish was coated with a corn meal crust, which is the best, southern style. SO GOOD!!! The fish is very crispy on the outside, soft and juicy on the inside! The cornmeal batter honestly makes it a million times better. Easily the best fish and chips I've ever had. The pieces of fish are huge too! A fantastic hidden gem and you should definitely try it sometime. Highly recommend the catfish. Just beware of long wait times! I don't think they have too many people working there so it can take about 20-30 minutes for your order to be ready. read more

Unfortunately the fish was not fat at all. Not sure if I got the bottom of the bowl or broken filets but they were more like fish strips. Super thin pieces , with a nice crispy thin crunchy crust. Couldn't really taste the fish even with thin crust since pieces were so small and thin all I could taste was crust. Same with shrimp,butterflied and small oysters. Disappointed didn't get to experience best part of fish and chips, biting into a big hunk of fried fish with soft flaky fish inside. read more

Mmmmmmm, a couple of inefficiencies that need to be addressed: 1) Maybe it was just this day, but their # (510) 653-2121 wasn't working. I along with a number of others made them aware when we walked in. 2) The To-Go menu prices aren't the same in the actual restaurant. Everything is about $1-2 dollars more than what's listed on the To-Go menu. 3) It takes quite a while for your order. Hence, why I tried to call in! Granted you're likely ordering something fried, but it still takes about 30mins. for your order. After all that, the food is good. Not great, not bad, but good enough to quench your taste for fried fish. I do like the fact that you have the option of spicy seasoning. The menu is over loaded with fried seafood (fish, prawns, oysters), chicken, burgers and even smoothies. read more

The fish here is perfectly cooked! Not too greasy, not over cooked (so many places over cook their seafood it's ridiculous). But not here. Perfect every visit. This location is small so you'll drive past it and not even realize it. There's probably about 5-6 tables so order to go if you can. They have $5 lunch specials if your balling on a budget. Burgers for the non seafood lovers & kids meals. The staff is very pleasant, family style. You can also call your order in & pick it up when you arrive. read more

I hate writing bad reviews but I feel I need to do this one review in this fish place! I gave it two stars because I did enjoy my crispy chicken wings..I ate about 3 pieces out of 5! But it had sooo much batter that eating 3 is enough! Not to mention we bought a lot of fish pollack and prawns! I ordered a side of potato salad and cole slaw as well! It was nice that they put in a complimentary bread but there was no butter on the side for it?? Hmmm... Upon driving home to SF...I could smell the great aroma of the fish..fries and prawns! I'm excited to get home and enjoy our dinner!!! To my disappointment...when we opened up the bags..I looked at the fish and the prawns..it had tooo much batter when I told the nice lady who took our order that I like light batter since I wasn't a fan of cornmeal batter! She went to the cook guy and asked if it's cooked in cornmeal batter.. He said that's the only batter they used! I agreed as long as it was light! Well..that guy today really made me think that he over battered it because it was too much for him to do light especially my hubby and I spent almost $70!!! He didn't care of a customer's request as long as he made it and got his money???!!!! I didn't leave a tip like I normally do..it's our first time to order from this place and it will probably be our last! My expectations of a fish and chips supposed to be light..crunchy and fluffy??? Unfortunately..not at all today..the fish and prawns were over cooked..over battered..and very dry! It's sad to me which I don't get why this place has all 4 stars??!!! I'm sure other mom and pop owned places are much better! I try to support them in business But I wish this place was awesome..it jus didn't meet the 4 stars that other people voted for! By the way..I included a picture of how much I ordered and regretted!! What a shame! To the cook guy..your chicken wings was good along with the fries which you can't go wrong in cooking them...please listen to the customer's needs next time! The food was tasty. The coleslaw was delicious and I'm very selective about coleslaw. The fish was crispy fried nicely. BUT I ordered catfish and it did not taste like or look like catfish. Catfish is my favorite fish and I know what it looks like and taste like. We called to see if maybe there was a mixup in the order they said it was not. Don't know what the issue is with the fish, but I knew that wasn't catfish. I will not be going back for that reason. read more

Great little fish shack. Nice variety of options as long as you want it fried. Fried catfish, whiting, red snapper, oysters, prawns, and wings are available. I've had almost everything and have yet to be disappointed. They even do a good job on the fries. The price keeps creeping up, but it's still a decent value. The owners are kind and gentle and patient. I've seen them handle some difficult customers and they have done so respectfully. If you're in the vicinity, we'll worth it. read more

So, I am originally from Wisconsin, and we love to have a Friday Night Fish Fry. My friends from home convinced me to order some. I was able to order this on Postmates, and I absolutely fell in love. It was an absolute perfect meal. The fish was crunchy and had delicious seasoning. Also cooked perfectly. The fries were fried to perfection. For a long time, I've wanted to try Fat Fish. Because I was in the area, I decided to give it a shot. The lady that was working was really friendly. However, my lunch was not really up to par. The catfish fillet was quite thin, the oyster had a slight fishy flavor, and the prawns were on the verge of being overcooked. The hot sauce was more like salsa (I like crystal). I don't like giving a one-star review and struggled for two weeks to think of how I could justify adding another but came up dry. Like their fish. Before I proceed, understand that I grew up in the south know what for when it comes to fried fish. Stopped in after passing several times and reading reviews here. Was eager to try, having lost my go-to spots after moving from LA - and excited at the prospect of having something this close to home. Ordered the snapper and wings with fries to go. Ate it not 2 minutes later in the car - or rather tried to before chucking it in the nearest bin. The fish was repugnant. Beneath an overly-thick breading was an almost jerky-like fish that tasted and smelled well past its prime. It's color - grey at best and a funk yellow-green-grey at worst - underscored this point. I thought, 'Fine, maybe this particular fillet is just freezer burned and one of the others is good.' Nope. Moved on to the wings. Far less than unremarkable, unfortunately. They championed the flavor of old cooking oil and not much else, but if you waited for the grease to clear the pallet, the chicken came through loud and clear: decidedly off. OK, maybe I can wash this down with the fries. Nope. Just cr*p Costco Fries, cooked without love and seasoned with absence. Speaking of bad taste, WTF is up with the generic JayCo hot sauce with no flavor and a syrupy texture? Fat Fish do you hate your food that much? That's a funny coincidence, because I do too! The only nice thing I can say is that the folks behind the counter were very friendly. They deserve to be serving better food. Was it an off day? Who knows. I wish I could give this place a second chance, but it was bad enough I can't bear to think of going back. read more

Me, the wife and youngest son (6) went there to grab a quick bite after finding on Yelp. Saw pics for $5 order of fish and fries and decided to check it out. Got there and saw five dollar menu and stayed with that, two orders fish and fries, and an order of chicken strips. Went with a side of hush puppies and drinks. Food was prompt and fresh and good. Have no complaints. Just over $25 bucks for lunch for three and drinks with extra side. Will definitely be coming back in the future. Thought about taking pictures but there was nothing left by then! I was craving some fried oysters and The Fat Fish came up in the search. I ordered a combo, and happy to report that the oysters were very good!! The fish (cat) is crunchy and pretty tasty as well!!! Not overly seasoned, basic, but definitely tasty!!! The prawns are however dry, perhaps because they were a bit overcooked; and not fond of the tartar sauce as it has more vinegar than I'd like. But that's not enough to stop the strong 4 star review! I read the reviews, and got an either love or not vibe, but overall, I am pleased! I like the rippled fries, and the chicken was juicy and crunchy!! read more

I ordered the 2 fish (alaskan pollock), 4 chicken combo w/ macaroni salad for $11.99 pre-tax. The fried alaskan pollock was cut too thinly to taste the fish; the batter dominated the flavor. Incidentally, my order came with 3 pieces of fish. The fried chicken (wings and drumsticks), fortunately, was juicy and flavorful, almost more so than the batter itself. The macaroni salad tasted like mayonnaise and nothing else. For a venue which serves fried fish as its flagship product, it manages to disappoint. Only the chicken salvages a modicum of edibility from the order, and even then it does not manage to distinguish itself from other fried chicken vendors. read more

The fish is super thin, over cooked, no seasoning, and WAY TOO MUCH BATTER! I paid over $50 for overbooked food. The Oysters are super small (half a teaspoon). The potatoes salad wasn't very bad was out good, no egg but very good. What are recommend this place to anyone most likely not he would probably do better going to a fast food joint then to spend this kind of money at this place. Buttermilk fried chicken was so tender, every single kind of gravy/sauce was so flavorful and paired well with the main dishes. Gumbo is the perfect definition of comfort but the banana pudding was an absolute star. We were so full but couldn't resist since the taste was just remarkably sweet yet balanced to end the night with. Will definitely come back for another special occasion!

The black coffee is excellent. And my kids liked the sliders a lot. I was very disappointed by the tofu scramble. Note: it also contains eggs! Lucky I'm not vegan but I wasn't expecting that. The veggies listed didn't make it in the scramble, and the "seasonal veggies" were zucchini and yellow squash. Not the veggies I'd like in a scramble, or expect. It also had no seasoning. It was really not good. They were kind enough to refund me. But it was an unfortunate first encounter. I wonder if the regular egg scramble dishes taste better. I may have picked the one thing on the menu that is no good. But didn't leave a thrilling impression. So I could go back for coffee and sliders and maybe cake.

Ok, Starry Plough..I see you!…read more Recently one of my besties sent me a text and mentioned they were heading to the Starry Plough for an open mic night. Obvs, I attended! I hadn't been there in what seems like forever, and was pleasantly surprised to see such a cool presence of community show up. From stand up, to live music and spoken word, it was awesome to see such talented locals. There is also on the last Sunday of every month, Kid's Music. We recently attended this event and it was so fun. We ordered Cottage Pie, Homemade Chicken Strips with Fries/dipping sauces, and of course a Guinness. They had multi-color balloons to blow up, and two artists came and sang with instruments/passed out music shakers for the kiddos/and story time too. It was such a fun and interactive experience for the whole family to enjoy. Looks like they have programming everyday of the week too! From Irish dance, trivia, Grateful Dead Jam Sesh, and more..can't wait to come back again soon for their fresh taps, community vibes, and those yummy fries. Would love to try the House Mac & Cheese too.

The food was phenomenal, the service was superb, and the ambiance was stunning. Sitting by the water while enjoying an incredible meal made the whole experience feel special from start to finish. What truly made this visit unforgettable, though, was the kindness from the staff and manager. I noticed a small plant sitting off to the side that caught my attention. It reminded me so much of my mother, who recently passed and was a huge plant lover. Since losing her, caring for plants has become something deeply therapeutic for me. I jokingly offered to buy the plant, and instead, the manager kindly gifted it to me. That simple act of compassion meant more than they will probably ever know. On a day that can feel heavy while grieving a mother, they gave me a little piece of comfort to take home. Beautiful restaurant, beautiful people, and a kindness I won't forget. Five stars without hesitation.

It has an amazing waterfront/courtside view of the Bay, dock access to a ferry (I think it's Hornblower?), and a lot of natural light and open space. They also have a new chef and friendly staff. My homegirl and I started with the Green Curry Mussels, and they were definitely flexing like Mr Olympia. The curry broth was the star -- 10/10. We dipped everything in it: bread, fries...hell, it would have made tree bark taste good. I had the fish and chips, and the cod was perfectly battered like an amateur boxer in his first pro fight. Crispy, golden, and lightweight. My homegirl's cioppino was a little too tomato-heavy, so the waitress had the chef remix it. He did by adding more garlic, and it went from mid-sauce to perfect. I hope they keep that change! The staff said the new chef is considering updates to the long-stagnant menu -- and clearly, he's listening. They do need to bring the price of everything on the mini down about $5 :-), or else have happy hour specials. The restaurant got quiet after a cruise group hopped on a boat. It was relatively empty, and it totally has to be because of the marketing. If you're thinking of a nice alternative to Skates By The Bay (also very delicious!), It's a nice detour. This spot deserves more love. We'll be back.
