We ordered a 3 scoop poke bowl with two scoops of spicy ahi and one scoop of Maui onion ahi. We topped it with edamame, seaweed salad, Kim chee and wasabe aioli. Total cost $19. It can be a bit tricky to park in the lot as it can get quite crowded, but most people come and go quickly. We ordered 3 different items (requested a 1/4lb each of potato pasta, fresh ahi shoyu and fresh spicy ahi) for about $17. I believe I saw a sign posted near the register for a ~3% surcharge if you pay via card. We happily paid in cash for the discount and to support local businesses. The fish is fresh (no doubt about that), but the shoyu was a tad too salty for my liking and the spicy ahi wasn't nearly spicy enough. The potato pasta tasted as expected, but it just wasn't my favorite. In additional to poke, they also offer bento boxes and a few sweets. read more

This place is legit. We came to Kaui'i for a short stay and this spot wasn't even in our radar. My partner and I were chilling at Java Kai and we started randomly talking to talking to a couple that we saw at Hamura Saimin the night before. They recommended us this spot and we decided to make this our last stop before leaving. No regrets at all. The poke, fresh and melts in your mouth. The toppings were self-served and weighed at $5.99/lb I think. It's a small shop but it gets crowded quick. Also it's not too far from the airport. It's pretty much down the street, a 5-minute drive. We stopped by here after heading raving reviews for the spot. This intimate spot is located just off Akihito Hwy #7. It features options from the grill, but we came here for the poke. You can create your own poke bowl and customize the base, one or two scoops, and toppings by pound. They had a variety of other options, from different types of fish to crab. These are available by the pound as well. The server was super patient with us and even let us try a couple of samples. We ended up getting two of the ahi options by the pound, which was around $21.99 per pound. The ahi was SUPER fresh. We didn't get a bowl but one thing we noticed was it definitely tasted different from "mainland" poke, in a more authentic way. Overall, very impressed! read more

This place was bomb. Everything we ate was super delicious, super fresh and super duper! Just be aware they are only open until 4pm and when we got there at 3pm they were out of a lot of items. Not the best. We ordered a standard poke bowl with two scoops of ahi tuna and a shared plate. The poke bowl was relatively okay at best and the tuna was chewy. This should not be the case, especially if it is sushi grade. The shared plate was not good at all. It was supposed to come with rice, lomi lomi, and Kailua pork. The pork had no flavor and tasted as if it had only been salted. The rice was sticky to a point where it was very gelatinous and left a residue. The lomi lomi was the worst part of this dish. The salmon in it tasted fishy, like it had been sitting out the entire day after having been made in the morning or even the day before. This place is not worth it and you are paying way too much for what you get. read more

Poke was so fresh and buttery! I finally see what people mean when they say the poke in the mainland doesn't compare to what you can get in Hawaii. It really does kinda just melt away in your mouth. Definitely my favorite poke place that I've visited during my trip and also conveniently located near the airport. Highly recommend making this place your first meal upon landing. Ahi Limu Kohu Poke (a type of red algae) had almost an ocean taste similar to how oysters do, and Ahi Inamona/Ogo Poke (candlenut/a type of seaweed) had a light sea salt taste. Both in a good way of course. And both of which you can't go wrong with if you enjoy that kind of briny taste. Lots of other poke options were available as well, with samples upon request. A great place to get fresh poke and spam musubi. We came towards the end of them closing since our flight landed late. The service was no frills-order what you want and they pack up your goods. We came too late to order anything off the grill menu, but we did get an order of tuna poke and kimchi shrimp over white rice. The poke and shrimp were so fresh and delicious. Extremely fresh poke. You can tell the difference between poke in Hawaii compared to anywhere else. The flavor is incomparable to anything out here in Cali. The build-your-own poke concept was cool too because you can add all the toppings/sauces you want. They charge you based off the weight of the bowl. We loved it here so much that we stopped by multiple times during our time in Kauai. It's conveniently located in Lihue, there are a few parking spots on the property. It's a take-out location. The poke is amazing, good portion sizes, as are the grill items made on the spot for you. We also loved the take-away bento items and desserts. The owner straight up wants to charge customers for everything including toppings and credit/debit cards. I think that the owner is simply trying to not pay taxes. A short drive from the airport, this is the go-to spot to pick up poke (especially after a long wait from picking up the rental car). We came here around 1:30pm and thank goodness we did because they decided to close early (at 2:30pm) so by the time we got here, the poke options were already slim. You can choose between sushi rice, white rice, brown rice, or greens. After that, you pick 2 or 3 scoops of fish for a fixed bowl price. Then it's 6.99$/lb for the toppings (ie. edamame, seaweed salad etc). From my experience, this was the only poke place (and i visited 5+ spots), that had sushi rice so that was actually good to know. Most places charge $9.5-$15 for a poke bowl. This spot is on the higher end but the bowl is also arguably slightly bigger than the ones that are $9.5. If my flight wasn't so late and this store was still opened, I would've definitely considered coming back. read more

Aloha I went into The fish express today and ordered Mac salad it was so gross the mayo was spoiled. I also got the Salmon it was ok. I mostly get butter fish but they sold out today in the bento's .. best butter fish on Kauai .. I think I hope it's still good. This place is awesome! Arrived just after opening at 10 and there were already a good number of people there but the staff are so efficient that I hadn't even figured out my order. Their speciality is poke but they have a variety of bento boxes and grilled fish and other plates. They have a large variety of poke to choose from (including at least 6 variations of ahi, salmon, shrimp and much more and you can choose 2 or 3 different scoops (12.99 or 13.99) on either white, sushi or brown rice. They then weigh it and there's a self serve topping bar and you can put whatever toppings your heart desired for an addition 7.99/lb. Many options to choose from including kimchi cucumber, edamame', seaweed salad and more. Most of the toppings are fairly light so it actually shouldn't add more than a few dollars. Awesome local takeaway in Lihue (right across from Walmart) offering superlative poke by the pound, poke bowls, Hawaiian bento boxes, and Hawaiian side dishes. Star of the show for me was the poke. Recommend purchasing it by the pound and supplementing with side dishes/bento boxes for best pricing, whilst still filling you up + allowing you to experience a greater variety of Hawaiian cuisine. Specific options tried: 1. Ahi spicy poke with crab Taste 4/5. Ahi is fresh caught, and the taste reflects this. Order again? No. Did not feel that the crab added much. Would get the shoyu ahi instead 2. Spicy salmon/sea asparagus poke Taste 4/5. Salmon was awesome - every bit as rich and creamy as you would expect. Sea asparagus was interesting, but not my jam (those who enjoy this would likely rate 5/5) Order again? No, b/c of my (now recognized) disinclination for sea asparagus. 3. Ocean salad Taste 4/5. Delish as expected. Order again? Yes - to balance out what would otherwise be a mostly poke lunch, but nothing to write home about. 4. Maki roll (features canned tuna, which seems to be Hawaiian style) Taste 3.5/5. Enjoyable, but a bit rice heavy. Order again? Perhaps if I was truly ravenous. 5. Bento (consisting of chicken karaage, 2 pieces of fried spam, 1 slice of Portuguese sausage, 2 large onigiri) Taste 3.5/5. Same general thoughts as maki roll. Karaage was moist and tender. Spam was...spam? Onigiri were plain, but necessary to balance out a sodium-laden bento. Order again? Same thoughts as maki roll. Few additional notes: 1. Parking lot is tight. 2. No outdoor seating currently, thus consider finding a picturesque place to enjoy your purchases (we went to Nāwiliwili Park for proximity, shade, and picnic benches). 3. This is the best poke I have ever had in Hawai'i so far. My mom and I were doing a day trip to Kauai from Oahu, we stumbled upon Fish Express! The food is just simple and delicious.
