Arrived 3:50pm, 10 minutes before closing. Most things were sold out, but got spicy tuna poke + octopus slice + brown rice (flat rate) + pick your own toppings (sold by weight). Tuna is melt in your mouth good! Appreciated the brown rice option but will prefer more greens and less rice instead. Middle aged lady (maybe the owner?) recommended to come by before 2pm before things start to sell out. Next time gotta come earlier to try the salmon poke! read more

THE FISH EXPRESS is not a supermarket, nor is it a supermarket. It's like a deli counter but the food on display in the cold case is poke! They also have pre-packaged bentos and lunch plates. We ordered one of each type of food. There was one person in front of us in the line to order and he knew what he wanted so in no time at all, it was our turn to give our order. Before we were done giving our order, the lady put the our order together and we've paid, there was a line inside the small shop. POKE was great. The fish was fresh and well-marinated. This was my first stop out of the airport and the it DID NOT disappoint! For poke, lots of ahi options as well as proteins like shrimp and octopus. They also serve hot food/plates, have bento boxes ready to go and lots of cold drinks including beer! We got a poke bowl and the macadamia-crusted swordfish and both were delicious! For the poke bowls, you choose your base (white/brown/sushi rice or greens ), how many scoops of proteins you want (2 or 3) and have the option of adding as many ingredients from the toppings bar for an additional $7.99/lb! There was pickled ginger, takuan (Japanese yellow pickles), edamame, seaweed salad, cucumber as well as sauces/dressings like spicy mayo, wasabi mayo and eel sauce. The macadamia-crusted swordfish was yummy and came with rice, green salad, rice and a spaghetti salad. The fish was really fresh and the lilikoi (passionfruit) sauce was sooo good although a little on the sweet side, so if that's not your jam, get the fish with the garlic and herb sauce. Service is fast and the Auntie behind the counter was super cute and friendly. We had a few laughs. This is strictly a takeout joint, most people (including my partner and I) ate in our cars in the small, adjacent parking lot, while some sat on the ledge outside and devoured their meals. This take-out fish shop is hopping, and most of the customers are locals. It's a place to try authentic poke and grilled fish dishes. It's not fancy, but it's well worth a visit. This trip I got grilled mahi-mahi (Da Grill is open from 10:00-2:00, while the rest has longer hours). I chose the macadamia panko crust with lilikoi (a dill sauce). It came with a small salad of greens with dressing, rice and a macaroni & potato salad. The fish was good, the lilikoi tasty, the greens fresh, the dressing on the greens tasty too. It's right near the airport (and the hospital), and an easy place to swing by. If you want to get a taste of the food the locals eat, this is a good place to do it. read more

If you are ever in Lihue, make sure to check this spot out. The ahi poke was hands down the best I have ever had. I liked it so much I came back 2 more times during my 5-day visit. We dropped by The Fish Express on our way to Poipu for some good 'ol Hawaiian poke yumminess. We came in just a few minutes after they have opened and their extensive selection of poke's was such a sight to behold. We had three different types of poke at hand plus the kids had some misubi action going on as well. The Fish Express also had some bento boxes in the small corner of the store. The ahi and salmon poke we had was delicious. These are just not readily found in the mainland. But the star of the show for me was their smoke Tako. Man, the smokiness and the tenderness of the octopus was really on point. It was very delicious that sometimes I am doing a double take and asking myself: "is this beef?" I implore you to try The Fish Express when visiting Kauai, you sure will enjoy it as we did. read more

The poke here is AMAZING. I'm from Oahu and this is honestly the BEST poke bowl I've ever had. I mean, seriously.. the texture, the seasoning, the freshness- simple but perfect. I hate it when poke is tough/chewy or fishy but oh man, that is not the case with this place. Their poke is so fire. There's a topping bar too if you're into that. The topping bar is priced per pound but I recommend eating it on it's own or with rice. Why add toppings when the poke is just THAT good? They have some prepared food in containers at the front. I think they mark it half off towards closing. Scored 5 goteborg musubis for less than $3. Everyone here was so friendly and inviting. This was my first time in Kaua'i and I'm excited just thinking about my next trip here because I'm definitely adding this place to my must-go list. Overpriced. We're used to poke bowls being a set price, and the menu seemed like it would be the same way, but instead they charge you by weight & it ends up being more than you'd expect. The fish quality is great of course, but they have sort of different flavors than just the typical plain types of fish you'd normally get. I got an ahi that had extra salty flavor for some reason. We did enjoy the self serve toppings section. Just wish I knew that my bowl was going to be charged by weight. Unfriendly service. We felt bad for being tourists. This place was recommended to us by a local who sells fish he catches on his charter boats to various small businesses, this one being one of them every morning. They don't have a big selection, but the fish was very fresh and our Poké bowl was very on point. Bear in mind they charge by weight, so all the additional sides that you put on outside of your protein and your rice you get charged for. I did not know that, so my Poké bowl ended up being almost $25 lol. I loaded up because I didn't realize it cost more, I thought it was included in the price but it is not. There's extremely limited seating so we had to eat in the car, think it's pretty hard to find a place that doesn't have amazing sushi or sashimi, fish in general on the island, so if you like poke bowls give this place a try read more

Docked 1 star due to service / attitude from staff. I do not think I was treated the same way an older customer who was also in there at the same time as me was. I came here as a stop to grab a meal before heading off to the airport. I wanted a place that served poke. I ordered the poke bowl with three different fish and added on a few toppings at the toppings bar which we do ourselves. I had the three most popular fish over rice. The place is small - the parking is few, but still able to find something the time we went. There were other items seen in the window I would have wanted to try, but if I had more time and had more of an appetite. Amazing. Maybe some of the best poke I have ever had. There is no seating area - indoor or outdoor - so we just ate the bowls in our car in the parking lot.
