We have been coming here for years, originally on the advice of locals. The food has never been anything short of fantastic, with the best pokes on the island. We particularly like the shoyu ahi poke and spicy poke with crab. When they have (had) it, the Maine lobster salad was next-level stuff. These are available by the pound or as poke bowls. They have a selection of hot dishes which are made to order and only take a few minutes to make. The ahi katsu, when available, is fantastic. The ginger fried chicken and shrimp are sitting under warming lights, so are ready when you want them. Today we found banana cream pie brownies in the refrigerated section, which was broke-da-mouth good. Have you ever had a first bite of something and just started laughing and shaking your head? We came just before closing the next day, and found that the ginger shrimp, held under heat lamps, to still be plump, and flavorful. read more

The bottom line: If you want authentic poke that is nothing but fresh and delicious, you MUST stop here if you're in Kauai. I ordered two different types of Ahi Poke along with some of the Lobster poke and my taste buds were electric afterwards. I'll sum it up in the form Disneyland ride from the perspective of a Star Wars fan, most poke I try in San Diego is like going on Big Thunder Mountain - it's fun, but predictable because you can see what it looks like from the outside and nothing catches you with a surprise. This poke was like Hyperspace Mountain the first time I rode it at Disneyland! It was unpredictably good, fresh, exciting, and made me want to come back for more as long as I knew I wouldn't get sick from too much of it. Popular local takeout place known for their fresh poke. Their parking lot is very small and it goes to a very busy street, so it is difficult to go in and out of the lot. We went here a little before noon and just beat the lunch rush. They have so many choices for Poke...makes it hard to decide! If you ask them, they will offer you a sample on a toothpick. We decided on half a pound of the standard shoyu poke, salmon onion poke, and spicy lobster. We also got half a pound of their noodle salad, which is like a macaroni salad, except that they use strands of the noodles. I thought the best one was the salmon poke. It was just so smooth and buttery, quite delicious. Seasonings did not overwhelm the natural flavor of the fish. The lady helping us removed some of the not so nice looking cuts while scooping it. DH really liked the spicy lobster, which was not actually spicy. This one was dressed in a mayo-like sauce, sort of like the crab filling for California rolls. It was savory with no fishiness at all. That shoyu poke was fine, however, the pieces were a little smaller and there was some tough sinew in it. DH thought Costco's tuna was actually higher in quality. Texture was really excellent. The noodle salad tasted like standard macaroni salad. $5.99/lb. Taste was above average, but not crave worthy. Prices were very reasonable. Fish Express stands at the side of a busy highway so it can be a little dicey to make your way in here (especially if you're coming from the other side of the road), but it's worth the trip. The clear feature here is the fish, with tubs upon tubs of lovely poke and salads filling the display case in the front. When we were there at midday yesterday, there was a long but quick-moving line of folks who were ready to take advantage of the poke bowls. A standard bowl is rice (white, brown, or sushi), two scoops of your choice of poke or salad, and a small toppings bar. Our bowl of choice was topped with the spicy salmon poke, lobster salad, cubes of fried tofu, and seaweed salad. We also sprang for a drizzle of the unagi sauce, which tasted like a good teriyaki sauce. My husband and I were split - he loved the lobster salad, with fresh chunks of meat covered in a creamy mayo sauce, while I much preferred the super fresh salmon. Redolent of sesame oil and a hint of spice, this was just lovely. However, we both loved the unagi sauce and wished we'd put more over our bowl. For those who are squeamish about eating raw foods, there's also a menu for cooked items, such as fish sandwiches and plates. This restaurant was recommended to us by a friend who comes here often. We were thinking that it would have places to sit and eat though we knew it was a small location. This was the best food we have had on the island. We learned it's a great local spot. We highly recommend going and getting fish (tuna) but to go. We had the 3 tuna bowl, spicy, Spicy and seaweed. Got off the plane and searched google to find a lunch spot. This place had so many great reviews we decided to give it a try. My daughter and I had Shoyu ahi poke bowls and they were delicious!! The fish is so flavorful and fresh. I liked that we could add our own toppings (for an additional fee). My son got the shrimp and fried chicken plate. My husband got the mahi mahi with Mac nut crust. The fish and accompanying sauce was delicious!! And the salad dressing with the side salad was fantastic! A creamy miso based dressing. We also tried the chicken long rice. That was good too. Fish express is so close to the airport. As soon as my boyfriend and I landed, we drove straight to the nearest poke spot. The Fish Express popped up and it literally took us only 5 minutes to get there. Getting into the parking lot was a little difficult though as we were fighting 3 lanes. So, we made Uturn at the next stop light which wasn't so bad. The fish express was what I imagined a poke spot to be like. One counter between you and the poke. This place is a little different than most of the poke places on Oahu however. Here they have a "toppings bar" where you can scoop as much toppings of your choice onto your poke bowl for an additional $6.99/lb. They even have different furikake toppings. To the corner of the room, they have bentos (small packed meals). From deep fried squid, sushi, chicken and more. They even have a separate shelf just for candy goods. For a first timer, I think this place was pretty great. However, the poke bowl portions were on the smaller side (at least from what I'm used to back home). My boyfriend and I shared a 2 scoops poke bowl and still ended up getting another 1/2lb of poke. But if you're going to get poke, get the hamachi with sea asparagus and the spicy ahi with crab. I stayed in Kapaa and tried 3 poke-centric places: this one, Leung's Meat House, and Pono Market. This place was by far the freshest (I had all three at around 1 PM) but also the most expensive for the amount you get. If you like trying different poke places like me it's worth trying for comparison. I loved the sauces and the toppings. The kimchi was realllyyyy good, the ginger was sharp, and kimchi cucumbers were snappy. I had my doubts on whether it would match up and be worth the slight price diff but it def was amazing! If I were to come again I'd try the fresh mango too. I'm from Calfiornia and have never seen mussels offered. They had kimchi mussels which were interesting and chewy. I have a very small sample size so can't exactly say what is and isn't amazing but it was good to try :-) read more

No-frills spot serving different local dishes including some good variety of poke. There's nowhere to sit inside, so we ended up eating our food right outside on a ledge. We got two dishes - one poke bowl (sold by weight), and a lau lau plate. Both of them were great - the poke was fresh and flavorful, and the lau lau was nice and tender. Thank god I was craving poke for an early brunch because if we went any later than 1230 all the good poke would have been gone! There was a line of people but it moves fairly quick. You can tell this is a spot that locals come to for fresh fish. I ordered the spicy ahi and Maui onion and I think the Maui onion was the one that sent me. But honestly they're all amazing you can't go wrong. I also got lucky and got the last hamachi poke, so delicious! You get to serve all your own toppings. Wanted to be excited but from the start it was kinda clear there was something off. The person in front of us, clearly a local got some heaping scoops of poke so at first we were like cool nice portions. But no. We went right after and the same guy that served the person before us was very stingy with scoops, almost counting how many cubes of fish we each got. Hands down, some of the best poke in the entire island! I had a poke bowl with half shoyu, half spicy salmon on top of white rice and was able to top it with ANYTHING I like from there little bar. Obviously you pay by weight/fish price, but I feel like I over packed my bowl with so much heavenly goodness and ended up paying ONLY $12! I'm shocked and also tempted to buy another one to go. *Be sure to try the wasabi alioli. It's making my taste buds feel alive! As many times as I've been to Lihue, I finally got to try the "ono grindz" from Fish Express for the first time. They are located across from Walmart in Lihue. From their name, it sounds like a fish market or a place for local Poke bowls. Fish Express has many options other than just fish. They also offer plate lunches, musubis and packaged snacks! My man and I arrived just as they were opening up shop, so we had first dibs on their selections. I was craving a good Spam Musubi, so I grabbed a couple of those. Their Musubis are made fresh and contain a load of Furukaki! Yum! I also grabbed a container of Taegu, made from cod. My man grabbed a plate lunch. Service was extremely friendly!
