We have been seeing The Fish Grill in Dania Beach for years and have been wanting to stop in for dinner for quite a while. We went in around 7 pm on a weekend night out of season and were seated right away in a booth next to a window and were warmly welcomed by restaurant staff. It can get busier later in the evening and the staff said during season the wait for a table can get long mainly from increased amounts of tourists coming in. We ordered a bottle of wine to start (all ranging between $25 and $30). We ordered a side salad to start (around $3 with purchase of entree). We both ordered the Encrusted Swordfish (around $30). We tried It here due to the good reviews we had heard over the years, and the unexpected find of a Groupon for lunch or dinner. The Fish Grill has been in business for many years. and rightly so! Its very relaxed, the atmosphere is chill and the staff is awesome. It's a casual and straight forward fresh fish, fresh seafood, chicken, burgers, salads, subs etc. - almost everything is on the menu! CLAM CHOWDER - $5.95 cup -This is not your regular NE clam chowder. As chowder snobs from RI/MA, we are incredibly picky. it was not white but a light coffee color and was DELICIOUS!!!! The potatoes were cooked perfectly, clams chewy but not rubbery, celery cooked to perfection. We both ate ours and licked the spoon clean! The broth was so clean tasting with milk and something else- i don't know but I would go back just for the soup!!! SHRIMP COCKTAIL -$15.95 -Large Gulf shrimp, served chilled with lemon and our own house-made cocktail sauce. Good sized shrimp, good cocktail sauce, nice presentation but shrimp completely bland and tasteless. they did not add salt or spices to the water which made them not worth the money. we would NOT order those again. All entrees Served with French Fries, Cole Slaw, Pasta Salad, Rice Pilaf or Vegetable Du Jour. Add a cup of soup or salad 3.95 FRESH SEA SCALLOPS (FRIED, BROILED OR PAN SEARED) -30.95 Extra large northern deep and cold water fresh sea scallops, tender and succulent. We had them pan seared in butter and lemon and they were OUTSTANDING!!!!! Perfectly cooked, flavorful, you could taste the freshness. We split the dish and there are some of the largest scallops I have gotten in a restaurant. Sorry for the picture of the few scallops left, but we basically snarfed them. We were happy and full. We will definitely be back as they offer fresh calamari soaked in buttermilk then lightly fried, fried whole belly clams, raw oysters, oysters Rockefeller, crab cakes and more we want to try. Out of the 20 or so people having lunch , most people had big juicy hamburgers, or massive salads, or fish sandwiches - all of which looked delicious. Saw this place as I was leaving FLL and decided to stop in for lunch. The staff is super friendly, including the cooks who came out (it was early so I was the only person inside). I ordered 1/2 dozen oysters, and twin lobster tails with broccoli. They only had one lobster tail so I subbed it for shrimp per recommendation of one of the cooks. A short walk from the hotel where we were staying. They do not take reservations, so we had to wait. The menu includes everything a person visiting Florida would want. Stone Crabs, grouper, catch of the day, smoked fish dip, lobster roll, and fish and chips. And something I never heard of, "full belly fried clams." The server did not come over when we were seated, as the host put down four menus, and there were only three of us. Twice, I told the host there were three of us. I ordered the smoked fish dip. The dip was great, the crackers were crumbly. Jalapenos were finely chopped into the dip, giving it a nice kick. Time to order. Mrs. K. wanted fish and chips. This was before 7 pm, and they were out. Her plan B was to have just a baked potato with butter and sour cream. Took a bit of time to get the butter and sour cream. My daughter-in-law ordered the salmon and said it was awesome. And it did look awesome. My first choice was the lobster roll, sorry we are out, my second was fish and chips and we know they were out. My third choice was the fried full belly clams. Upon receiving the full belly clams, I was expecting a sweet clam strip taste. Oh boy, no, not that taste. My taste buds identified the full belly clams as having a chicken liver flavor. We ate here as we were desperate to eat something after traveling. This was literally across the street from our hotel. We sat down and ordered crab cakes, and the fried clams as our appetizers. Seafood was fresh and was good. Sauces didn't reinvent the wheel. We ordered an encrusted swordfish to share as an entree but that took a long time so we decided to order a soft shelled crab that was breaded and fried similar to the fried clams. The swordfish came out and it was not what I was expecting as there was more sauce than maybe fish and lacked salt. I was expecting more pistachio and swordfish but had a lot more balsamic vinegar flavor than those. Water wasnt refilled quickly and took a while to get a top off from my first cup of water. If anything, the food was more of a 3 to me because I thought and I know you can do more with a sauce other than tartar sauce. Breading could be lighter if they dredged in panko and flour. That way you get more seafood in the bite than batter flavor. Ultimately I gave it a 4 for having some good seafood and some I don't see on a menu too often. read more

I was driving south on Federal Highway in Dania Beach, when this corner restaurant caught my eye. A Fish Restaurant? I have to try it. They have good parking behind the building so we started out great. We encountered a cozy atmosphere that feels as if we were in NY. We were greeted very nicely and prompted us to the table. The waiter, Jim, was very polite and patient. He gave us a little background about the restaurant, and their concept. Very interesting that nothing is frozen and the fish are all cut and prepared in house. If you get there after 9 some fish might not be available. Everything that we ordered was spectacular. This restaurant was recommended by my hotel concierge as it appears to be a local favorite to many. I checked previous reviews and felt confident I'd be able to enjoy my meal here. It was 50/50 but there's no 2.5 rating. Seated promptly upon entry and the server was ready within minutes to walk me through the menu and provide recommendations. Service deserved a star even though from observations the owner was relentless in directing her staff. Not sure if everyone was new and she was training them or she just micro manages due to lack of confidence in them. Aside from her chaotic leadership the staff managed. One even admitted to me that she does run a tight ship. The food, the food, the food...Where do I start? I had the calamari as an appetizer which was fried to perfection but was seasoned aggressively. Border line salty. I had the beef burger ordered medium well but had to return it for it to be cooked longer. The patty was raw on the inside. Clearly they use frozen patties in their preparations...and unfortunately that makes for a tasteless burger. Absolutely no juiciness and a very dry bite. Half a star for the calamari which I would recommend once it's slightly seasoned. Oh...and if you order ranch on the side that's an additional charge. There's also a fee for paying by credit card as well. Ridiculous!! I can't in good faith recommend the burger but maybe the other menu items are prepared better. The food was fantastic but the service spectacular. We had a waiter who was friendly, attentive and down-to-earth. It made the entire experience delightful. My hubby ordered the cod Fish and Chips. It was perfection, a yummy batter, tender, fall-apart cod and great "chips" or as we say on this side of the pond, fries. It was our first time there but we will be back. This was our second time here in a week. Funny we got the same seat. I was glad that were opened at 2:45pm on a Sunday. The New England clam chowder soup was delicious and really hit the spot on a cloudy windy Florida day. Went on a Friday night. Arrived around 7 pm and the wait for a table was about 30 mins which ended up being more like 45 mins. There is no real place to stand or sit while waiting for the table and although there is a bar it was full with guests eating dinner. There is no notification system like text to phone for when your table is ready so you need to stay close to make sure you are not missed. Not the best setup. Once seated food was good. Seafood was fresh and staff were friendly and attentive. Skipped dessert because we were too full. Not the fanciest but a good neighborhood restaurant and would likely try it again but maybe midweek when it may be less crowded. Note parking in a lot behind the restaurant and shared with the gym. I have visited the Fish Grill multiple times on my journey through area restaurants. Although the wait is long (a sign of a good restaurant ), the food is well prepared. When they offer it, the whole lobster is priced well and excellent. We also enjoyed the clam chowder and fried clams with bellies. So why only three stars? Two reasons: (1) the service is inconsistent. Based on the server you get, it can be great or perfunctionarily indifferent at best. This is a clear sign of poor management. (2) most importantly, I noticed a sneaky 3% credit-card charge on my bill that I had never seen before. I hate those kinds of sneak-it-in charges and no matter how good a restaurant is, that alone will eliminate that restaurant from any future visits by me. read more

Cole slaw, best I have had in a long time. finely shredded, not too sweet. Service, - Alex (sp?) our waitress was perfect, good recommendations, prompt etc. Crowd, best of South Florida, mix of ages, cultures and everyone was polite. Probably not a night spot for the very young but we did leave before 8:30;) . Host was great, (did not get his name) Bartender (did not get name, too busy eating) but he made great recommendations. Very interesting jukebox/self service music with very wide variety, go if you are not interested in being seen but eating well and enjoying a great environment and eating well. The only drawback I might point out, does not appear to be dog friendly, at least that was my excuse... don't tell my dog. Stopped by The Fish Grill (TFG) tonight during an overnight stay in FLL en route home to ATX tomorrow. TFG was only a block away from the hotel, and thanks to poor service by the hotel's airport shuttle (different review), we arrived at TFG an hour before they closed. We were warmly received despite the late hour! We ordered quickly, a martini and fried clams. Both came out quickly. The martini was perfect! Delicious! The clams were just OK. Served piping hot out of the fryer, but the breading overwhelmed the clams. We ended up picking through the fried breading to find the clams. The tartar sauce was good. As entrees we decided on the baked scrod dish, clam chowder starter, and rice pilaf and green beans on the side; we also ordered the Maryland fried soft shell crab sandwich, coleslaw on the side! The clam chowder was OK, a bit bland and a tad salty. The scrod was a HUGE piece of fish, the sauce was a bit salty also. The soft shell crab suffered from batter that was too thick for the crab... the slaw was good, and a re-visit to the tartar sauce confirmed it was good. The Fish Grill delivered in a pinch. It felt like some of the dishes/sauces suffered from an end of the day/sauces simmer all day, reduce and get salty by the end of the day. It may also be that salt is simply used too much in the kitchen. Either way, it was an OK meal at closing time. After a long day of travel, we were happy to find TFG was still open! We are staying down the street after our cruise and didn't feel like venturing far and I found this as being close by. 5 min walk from holiday inn, Wyndham, or comfort inn. The food was absolutely delicious. For a little hole In the wall with the sweetest little hostess greeting us we fell in love! She knew the menu and gave us a little tour of it. Stayed across the street at Tru by Hilton and found this restaurant just diagonally across the street and an easy walk. We arrived for lunch and restaurant had customers but not so busy that we couldn't get a table. Our waiter was friendly and made a few suggestions. But the hostess (whew yep all that Boston attitude even though she's in Florida now). Service is slow and we never received refills on water despite needing it. Don't order the lemonade- it was watery and not good! My friend ordered a burger and fries and I settled on mussels and dude salad. Her burger came out with bacon that was so undercooked she couldn't eat it but said the burger was just ok. I think the bacon kept her from fully enjoying the burger. Now my side salad was ok but the onions were strong - whew. I had to remove them. The mussels were good and there were so many I couldn't finish it all. First things first.... This place was directly across the street from our hotel. The food was okay, but the drinks were better. We enjoyed friendly, molasses-slow service, which included a 20 percent discount if you Yelp. There was a huge Palmetto bug dead and upside down outside of the entrance. My understanding is that these insects are all over Florida, but it was still disturbing and violently disgusting. Our server was a friendly lady from Latvia, but she was overwhelmed. The shrimp arrived packing a green hue. My sister in law sent it back for another dish. They accommodated this, but were super slow about it. Five adults ate and drank for just under $200 bucks, so it was a reasonably good value. Florida is a hot, filthy, funny place. I am guessing that you won't eat much of anything while in this state if you hold them to standards. We prayed over our food and thank God, everything seemed to turn out alright. read more

Grabbed a solo dinner late friday. I sat at the bar and had an ice cold Coor's Light draft. Read reviews on the amazing clam chowder and it was amazing. Saw this place on Check Please Must have literally passed by it over 1000 x and never thought about going in until I saw it on TV with Michelle Bernstein . Wow !!! Is how to describe it . What a menu 80% fish items :) Very impressed with the menu . We started off with the fried calamari that was lightly breaded and fried very light and crisp , came with a warm marinara sauce which was interesting but I opted for the standard red cocktail sauce very yummy .
