Our latest visit to Fish made me rethink why we come here all the time. Living in Midtown, the location is so convenient it's hard to go anywhere else, but I think it's time to drive the few extra minutes to another sushi joint. We went on a Sunday night and were only given a sushi menu, no dinner menu. We were perplexed, and should have asked about it but didn't. After this most recent visit to Fish I am starting to feel like we are not getting enough bang for our buck. We ordered the Cheeseburger Roll, and it was TINY--definitely not worth the $15 price tag. Two rolls, Spicy Edamame (so good), and drinks easily add up to a $50 dinner. Correction: an unsatisfying $50 dinner. read more

I had the crawfish roll and it was yummy and also the hot rock beef was delicious! I don't eat sashimi but I did take a nib from the platter that my friend ordered and it was fresh and good. Service was great and the ambiance/environment was nice. I also had the lobster puffs and didn't like it because it had too much cream cheese. Some of the best sushi in houston, especially during the reverse happy hour on Thursdays from 8 - to I don't know when lol, anyway. My girl and I got a wide range of sushi and by far the crab wantons are the best I've ever had, also worth getting is the shoi roll other than that its pretty standard sushi at a great price. read more

What an affordable sushi restaurant! Their happy hour is great. Sushi at a good price. The sushi was so fresh too. Their miso soup came out piping hot with lots of tofu and seaweed in it. I got a spider hand roll and some sushi nigiri it tasted so fresh. My mom got the salmon on a bed of arugula salad. The salmon was flavorful and the arugula salad was seasoned just right. The mochi balls also tasted great. They were not too chewy and not too hard. The flavors were light and not overbearing. I would definitely come back here for easy, affordable sushi. read more

We started coming to Fish back when it was bottomless sake on Thursdays. Needless to say those were some terrible Friday mornings. Nowadays it's a regular sushi bar, although an expensive one. I don't hang out much on this block anymore, but if you live in one of the close apartments, this is your best bet. read more

I would probably give this place a solid 3.5 stars, but I'll bump it up to a 4 since we had a lovely GNO evening and good service. I hate trying to find parking in midtown. I ended up just paying $5 to park in the lot off of Gray and Helena. I didn't want to valet for $8 plus tip. Short walk, I didn't feel unsafe at all. Made reservations online for 7:45pm for Thursday night...really easy to do...got seated right away when I got there...I like that I didn't have to wait for the rest of the party to get there before I could sit down. I hadn't been here in gosh...like 6 years or so...so it's changed a little. I remember it being more dark...and a lot more booths. But I kinda like the set up now...a little more brighter, casual, but yet still an intimate setting. We waited until 8pm to order off the reverse HH menu. We all had the lychee martinis...it was strong...wished it had more of the lychee flavor to it. We ordered truffle fries, edamame (free if you check in on Yelp!), chicken wings, calamari, pork belly, crab puffs, shoi roll, and a couple of other rolls and sushi pieces. Overall the food was decent. I wouldn't say any of them really stood out to me. But hey it's happy hour...we got to sample a lot of things. our bill came out to be like $85 among the 4 of us...so not too bad. I wish the portion for the pork belly and the wings were more. Wings were a little heavily breaded and a bit salty. Our waiter, Daniel, was very nice and took good care of us. I'm glad that it wasn't too overly loud in there that we were able to carry a conversation without screaming. I'm a little sad I forgot to order that miso cod I used to love so much. Had the red snapper sashimi, Godzilla sushi roll and crab fried rice. The food looks spectacular and is very fresh. However, the sashimi was pretty bland relative to its cost and the sushi roll lacked the bold flavors that the description suggested that it had. I had much better sushi in Atlanta (e.g. Harry and Sons) and in San Francisco (e.g. Ryoko's). read more

Been there three times, one for lunch, the 2nd for happy hours Sunday, and the third time was Sat dinner. For the two first times, we had Go ogle Offers deal which really could helped, lol, the total was around $80 for two, yay :)) but with the deal, we got it cheaper. The food was so fantastic, we got Calamari, Dynamite Shrimp for the Appetizer - the very must-try. Excellent !!! For the sushi roll, we got Spider, Philly, California, Spicy Tuna, and specialty roll Lobster. 5 stars for the Lobster roll, I swear ! That was the must have for every visiting of us. For the 3 times we visited , it was kinda different for the taste of it, anyways, it was still good ! My bf also got chicken udon which he said the broth was just perfect. But it was expensive at the price of $11. We almost tried everything from the menu, I can recall some of it. A Kobe burger combo was huge, and my bf said it was okay. I got sashimi sampler which were fresh and yummy. I have tried Lychee Martini and decided to stay with my Iced Tea drink. For happy hours, some of the rolls was just $2, and the beer was half off , ( ?!) Looking for Anh a waitress, she was such a sweet lady. If you're hungry for sushi in midtown, this place is sufficient. We came here for a late dinner, so we didn't get to partake in HH. The bar drinks were ok, although I ended up having to send the first one back - it was a specialty drink that was supposed to be mixed with club soda, it tasted more like tonic. I started with a salad that had THE BEST miso dressing and then ordered a specialty roll, which was just ok. The service is great, the ambiance is a little dark. Yah I know the bottomless sake is gone and that sucks.....But they still have a pretty awesome reverse happy hour. And the sake is still pretty cheap. Aside from that, I do really love their sushi. Love this place. The dynamite shrimp is awesome and the citrus sea bass appetizer is spicy and delicious. There are decent options for non-sushi lovers too, like the fajita roll. It's not at all over priced and the atmosphere is great if you're planning on heading out for a night in midtown. Happy hour deal here is pretty good, but I would only come for regular dinner if I have a living social voucher, otherwise it's overpriced and the food is not amazing or anything. Parking is difficult in midtown and you have to pay $2/ hr if you park in the garage even after 6 PM. For HH deal if you check-in on Yelp, you can get coupon for a free appetizer. One time my group had 2 coupons and we were able to use it both to get 2 free appetizers :) Today is the second time my husband and I came with a living social voucher. The voucher cost $20 for $40 worth of food. We ordered only $37.50 and at the end of our meal the waiter came with our bill showing that they applied only $37.50 and we have to pay the rest of tax of $3.09. It is fine that the living social voucher does not cover tax, but we were not happy the waiter did not bother asking us if we want to order more food so we can get the best deal out of the $40 voucher. If we order $2.50 more food, then the total tax we pay would only increase by 21 cents to $3.30. Our table was already cleared, it was just embarrassing for us to order 1 more nigiri at $2.50 to maximize the use of our voucher. But we asked anyways, and the waiter had to get the manager's permission to allow us to do this. Well, if you had asked us earlier before giving us our bill, involving the manager would not have been necessary! At the end he made us look like a difficult customer to deal with :( The waiter came with the 1 nigiri and did not bring any chopstick or dipping dish. Really? you want me to eat this with my hand? Overall throughout dinner, we were happy with the food and service. The waiter checked on us often and water was refilled frequently. Just wasn't happy with how our meal ended. We ordered the following: - Udon noodle soup ($10), comes with 2 shrimp tempura, we thought it was pretty good, the noodles are chewy, comes with plenty of shiitake mushroom and some vegetables. The soup was flavorful with a good spicy kick if you put in the spice they give you on the side. - Salmon Skin Roll ($5) - not that good, the salmon skin lack crispiness and way too much rice in the roll - Spider Roll ($7.5) - pretty good, made up for the crunchiness the salmon skin roll lacked, but I have had better spider roll else where. - Sea Diver Roll ($11) - pretty good snow crab, avocado, cucumber, masago topped with fresh water eel - Salmon Nigiri ($2) - decent, but I've had better ones else where - Salmon Roe nigiri ($2) - it's just ok, the salmon roe does not tatse that fresh. Maybe because I've had salmon roe from Nippon and they taste way more fresh. - Yellowtail Nigiri ($2.5) - just ok read more

The only reason I talk myself into going here is because of the location. There is better sushi elsewhere. They changed their happy hour as well, so its not what is listed on this site. The only positive thing that I wanted to rave about this place was their Sunday happy hour which they no longer have. So honestly, there isn't much to brag about this restaurant anymore. This place was great! Yes, using a Groupon for $40 worth of free food would make any place awesome, but The Fish would be great even if we had to pay for everything. We got some of the much yelped about blue crab fried rice. It was good and had lots of lumps of crab meat in it. the few rolls we got were the godzilla, shoi, and one other one with crispy in the title. The godzilla and shoi were DELICIOUS! The crispy one was good too, but lacked some flavor compared to the other 2. The Asahi beer was cold and and brought promptly to us after we ordered it. We wanted to order more food, but our stomachs couldn't take it after we finished off the rice. It is in a great location for people-watching as you eat. My boyfriend and I came here one week with my grandmother, and came back the next week with his grandmother. They are both not always the easiest people to please (restaurant wise) and they both LOVED it, and so did we! We got the spicy edamame (freaking awesome), a Spiro roll (super fresh and tasty), cheeseburger roll (I didn't taste it but both my boyfriend and and grandmothers enjoyed it), and our favorite roll was the Millennium (DELICIOUS and the lemon flavor was light and almost refreshing). We can not wait to come back, hopefully next time on a romantic date. It might just be our new favorite sushi spot... I really really wanted to like this place, but I have to admit the sushi is just average. It's even probably above average if you haven't gotten good sushi in Houston (there are a lot of great places). The service at The Fish was fantastic, even at the sushi bar. I also appreciate the creativity for the sushi chef who spoke with us. Lots of good sauces, some good rolls. Maybe they just need to take a look at the balance of flavors? The tiger eye had a little too much cream cheese and was sloppier than other places I've been. There was one roll I did like. It had some good sauces and pork belly in the roll. I appreciated the creativity. The nigiri was definitely fresh but nothing amazing. So, I give this place 3 stars for a good, not great experience. I'd even say maybe a 3 1/2 if I could. read more

We are looking for a place for an important business dinner, so I set out to try it out at lunch before we actually take people out. It is located in the middle of trendy midtown of Houston, there is meter parking on the street and a garage around the corner. Upon entering the restaurant, we were welcome by a friendly hostess and a smell of chlorine/bleach (the remnants of previous night cleaning?). Ambient is trendy and chic. Service is friendly, attentive and efficient. Food however is not up to par. We ordered edamame, seaweed salad as appetizers and tempura udon and spicy tuna bowl. First the udon, the broth is average, udon is overcooked. With the price tag of $17, the spicy tuna bowl was disappointing. It has WAY too much rice and a handful of "NOT" spicy tuna, shredded lettuce, daikon, sprout and a few sliced mostly cucumber skin. The rice has an orange tint to it and I can't tell whether it is ketchup or tomato sauce that made the color, but the whole thing is lack of flavor and unappetizing. All in all, it is in a nice location, service is good, nice ambient, but there is room for improvement in the food department. read more

I bought a Groupon to the Fish and my experience was wonderful. My friend and I got a booth and our waitress was Anh and she was so pleasant and helpful. She recommended appetizers to sushi and to the type of drinks we should order.. and no matter how busy it got, she always had a smile on her face and was so attentive. She knows her stuff! I went here for an anniversary dinner. The place isn't that big, but very nice. We loved the ambiance. We had the Miso Silver Cod for an appetizer which I highly recommend. It has a slight sweet taste from the miso marinate, and it's cooked perfectly with a slight char that melts in your mouth. We also had the LIckitty Split roll and their soft shell crawfish handroll which I really like. We had a groupon deal which made it even more pleasurable.
