This place is filthy!! Outside deck hasn't ever been swept or blown off. Tables are grungy and covered in dirt. The tables look like they have never been washed with soap and water. If it's like this outside what does the kitchen look like? If dirt doesn't bother you then this is your place. Food is ok. read more

Great place! Friendly waitress's and mostly great food! Right In Camino and easy access!

A day trip to Apple Hill included lunch at this place. The outside temperature was 102 F and the air was filled with smoke (God bless our firefighters), so to be indoors sitting down for a meal was a wonderful break. The atmosphere was nothing special in this adorable mountain town, but the servers/waitresses were great. I had a Santa Fe chicken sandwich with steak fries and a soda. The soda was a 12 oz can (with a glass of ice) for $3 which is crazy expensive since there was no refills. The sandwich was delicious and the fries were good. My friend ordered a cheeseburger protein style (no bun) with fries. She said the burger had a strange taste to it. The waitress was very kind when she heard this and only charged us for the fries. Now that is good customer service!! We weren't upset or even asking it to be removed from the bill, but we were impressed with their actions. For the excellent care we received, we will be back! Not as pleased with my most recent visit. Hostess (owner?) not even trying to mask. A family, all unmasked, in the tight entry are chatting away loudly with everyone. When my food was rung up, the hostess, presumably noticing my mask pulled one out of her pocket and put it just over her lips. Then as she handed me my credit card she said "my hands are in bleach all day". I'm not worried about your hands but I do want to see the mask on from the start. Its not hard and shouldn't be a political statement but a way to show that you care about others. Was glad to be doing take out not eating in. I saw wait staff and other customers in the entry are with masks on - that was a positive. Please set a better example for them. Finally, I ordered a sandwich but got a salad instead (in addition to another salad I intentionally ordered). Didn't realize that until we got home. Disappointed. May give them another chance after the pandemic is over but not likely to patronize again before then. read more

We found this place by accident while on our Apple Hill adventure. After trying to find a place to have lunch and having no luck, a wrong turn led us to this place. It's a small and cozy pub-like restaurant with low ceilings, booths, wooden tables, an outdoor eating area, and a wooden bar. The drink menu has a list of beers and wines from local wineries and breweries which was nice. My dad wanted to order some of the All American Lager by Jack Russell but unfortunately they were all out of it. He had to make a different choice but enjoyed it anyway. The menu offers a few traditional pub grub selections as well as sandwiches and a a few other entrees. I chose to go with the beef stroganoff off of the pub grub list. It started me off with a small but delicious cup of clam chowder soup served with a pack of wheat crackers. The soup itself was tasty and had a unique flavor to it. Different than any other clam chowders I've tasted! My beef stroganoff was served over fettucine noodles with a side of mixed veggies. The noodles were thick and tasty and the beef and mushroom sauce over the top was good as well. There were chunks of tender beef as well as huge chunks of mushrooms. My dad ordered the fish and chips and said that the fish was a little overcooked, but that's pub food for you. My mom ordered a sandwich with a side of rice pilaf. My boyfriend ordered a sandwich with a side of coleslaw and my friend Patrick ordered a hamburger. It was basic food, but very tasty and hit the spot. We were starved! The waitress we had was good and on the ball and took and served our order promptly. This is a cute little place to stop and get a bite to eat if you're in the area. The prices were very reasonable. The area it's located in is very quaint and nice to look around at if you have the time. It is also only walking distance from a cute place called Mill View which is where we walked to afterwards to grab some delicious Apple Hill desserts from. Score! read more

Updating for 2018, still pretty good, still coming back a few times a year, schnitzel still draws me in. My wife and kids love the meaty baby back ribs. Other items are plenty good too like Chicken and Dumplings. I have tried the Lamb Stew and it was solid. I know the fish and chips is good, and is ordered a lot. As are burgers of course. The Forester is a quaint pub with a throw-back to the lumber days of this sub-region. It's warm inside even if it's winter cold outside, they have a real wood stove.The Pub is located in its own Cedar mini-forest, in the heart of Camino. Fall and Winter months may be the best time to visit the Forester as the food is hearty and saucy. There is lots to choose from, both American (burgers, steaks...) to a bit of german, classic euro fare. Speaking of "fare", the prices are very fair indeed. You won't be shocked, and there are small portions at $5 to $7 for the little ones, in this family friendly establishment (as far as Pub's go). I usually enjoy the Jaeger Schnitzel, the pork was pounded out tender, the breading was crispy pan fried, and the mushroom bacon gravy is on par. The spaetzle are average package fare, but definitely cooked properly and good. The Red Cabbage is an appropriate side dish and it is made in house. Never sour, a bit sweet. You can only deduct a point for some kitchen drawbacks such as not everything is made in house or is perfectly tasty or well made. I think the sauces are a bit too heavy. The service is solid and the desserts are yummy too. They have home made strudel and cobblers and things like that. If you like a throwback, you'll enjoy it. read more

There was a blonde waitress who greeted a group of people she knew that sat after us, they got their wine, we were still not greeted. She came around 4 more times and never greeted us. The biggest reason I love this place is the "Cheer's" feeling they have going here. The things I've eaten here are pretty decent. The beef strognoff is pretty damn good. I'm NOT a mushrooms fan, but I turn a blind eye to them when I eat this meal. This visit I had a bacon cheeseburger (because it's National Cheeseburger Day today), and I really enjoy it coming out 1/2 assembled, cause I'm the worst customizer for food, and this way I'm not disappointed. I felt it was missing something until I realized 'I' forgot the Ketchup. Over all darn enjoyable burger. My daughter got the kids grilled cheese and it was really good. For an appetizer, we got "chicken strips", and I forgot theu deep fry a flattened chicken breast and slice ot into 'strips'. Needed some salt (shocking actually), but not bad at all. Customers were seated right next to each other without any space between tables, and no outdoor seating was offered even though tables were outside. I cannot believe this place is so reckless about COVID-19. Put politics aside and protect your customers. If a server is talking all day to people, he/she should be wearing a mask. My family and I have a tradition of stopping here for a late lunch after our fall visit to Apple Hill. This last visit we ordered the buffalo burger, chicken and dumplings, goulash and beef dip. The winners were the buffalo burger (I will be ordering this next time) and goulash. The burger was cooked perfectly and the goulash had some amazing flavors. The chicken and dumplings was good but not outstanding enough to order again. The loser was the beef dip, the meat just wasn't there and in general wasn't the best one I've ever had, not even in the top 20. The service is always amazing. They are fast but at the same time warm and friendly. I love the fire they usually have going and try to sit but that. Last year we had to sit outside because we brought our corgi. Everything was great, but I missed sitting in the cozy inside. Overall, we love this place and like to go back to it. read more

Menu diverse and proper in near a Hick Town Placerville. We got two menu items, each came with soup or salad. As we planned our Choices My Valentine chose his usual Real Time Beef Stroganoff. I picked the pounded pork into a filet. Each came WITH Sparzil noodles with Gravy and fresh purple cabbage sauteed. Was The Bomb!! We shared both our meals, asked for plates none arrived. Even split Big Salad and fresh beef soup of! the day! Oh I ordered sparking water Joe Brought to table and poured over ice! And left bottle like a fine wine! An interesting place close to Highway 50 where its wood cabin decor appears to have been there a lot longer than this 7 year old restaurant. The baby back ribs ($16) were so tender that you had to eat them with a fork; the meat completely fell off the bone when trying to grab a rib. The clam chowder wasn't all that special, but the mixed veggies that came with the meal were definitely fresh. When this place is full, I'm sure that it's full of character!! read more

Good spot for a bite to eat if in the area and hungry, but nothing spectacular. I came here with a large group, and they were more than accommodating. We sat on the patio, which was quite nice on this summer evening. The waitress was on-point, with the noted exception below, as she remembered everyones orders enough to get all the food and beers out. Service was fast as well, considering all the food we ordered. My friend had some cream of mushroom soup (ick!!!), and liked it well enough. Until he saw some funny stuff in there, which turned out to be small peieces of cardboard. Three in all, just mixed up in there. The waitress wasn't as concerned as I would have hoped, and my friend kept on eating it (like I said, ick!!!). Quote of the day goes to the waitress, reacting to the found cardboard: "Oh, it must have come on the mushrooms" WTF!?! why would it be on the mushrooms in little pieces? If they do come in cardboard, why wouldn't it be taken off before cutting them up? Later: "I talked to the chef, yeah, it was the mushrooms". OMG, and they only took off the cost of the soup! The Forester is fantastic! Great food and service. My partner and I had dinner at The Forester last night with some friends. We were trying to visit Jack Russel Brewing, but thankfully they were closed, and we were able to stumble upon this local treasure. Our server, Brandon, was terrific. We were greeted quickly and had drinks within minutes of ordering. He took our food order promptly, and the food was delivered quickly and hot. Brandon gave amazing service; he was kind, helpful, and never let our drinks go empty. I had the Eggplant Sandwich - it was phenomenal! The eggplant was sliced thin, battered, and fried. Most eggplant sands come with marinara, but instead, this had a thousand island dressing. It came on sliced bread, which was perfectly toasted, so it held up well to the dressing. I ordered their steak fries as my side, they were slightly underdone but still tasted good. My partner got the veggie burger, and he enjoyed it as well. It had all the fixings as a regular burger - bun and veggies - but they used a thousand island dressing instead of mayo. It was absolutely delicious. Drinks-wise, we were able to get local brewery Solid Ground's Kabru IPA on draft. The beer tasted amazing - perfect temperature, hoppy, bright, and fresh. We also ordered some White Claw cans. Brandon immediately asked if we wanted glasses with those - a simple question that is worth extra points in my book. I prefer to pour my carbonated canned drinks into a glass to break up the carbonation in the glass instead of my stomach, resulting in more drinking. I've dined here twice now and both times have been disappointed. The first time while my salad was good, my wienerschnitzel pork was pink and under cooked inside, hello raw pork!! Since the parking lot is pitch dark, my visitor tripped and fell on a bumper in the parking lot so bring a flashlight to see as there aren't even any reflectors or safety precautions outside. The second time, I recently brought my 2 visitors with me after a long day of sightseeing. Starting out, two of used the restroom and being handicapped, I opted for the handicap stall. There was NO handicap height toilet, sat and could not get up off a child's height toilet. The locked door was too far away to get help. We laugh about it now but it wasn't quite funny at the time. My 67 year old friend had to climb under the stall to help me up. That was just the beginning. The asparagus soup, a special, was delicious and so were the Fish and Chipps enjoyed by my company, but....my pot roast was TOUGH AS SHOE LEATHER I couldn't even cut it or eat it. I asked the waitress to let the cook know when she collected our plates and all my meat was on it. No offer to make good on it or apology came, but the full check did. Service was good considering how busy it was but I'll never return to waste my money again. As a restaurant, management needs to pay attention to safety and legal handicap requirements. read more

We stumbled across this little gem on our way back from Tahoe a couple of weeks ago. The service was great, both our hostess and server were incredibly nice and attentive. The food was delicious and there were lots of smiles and laughs to be had. It was a very nice bit of feeling normal in these trying times. We've already marked it on our maps as one of our favorites. My husband and I met up with some friends from when I went to elementary school (40+ years ago) and they suggested this place for lunch last Saturday. I will have to say great choice. I had the chicken and dumplings meal with red cabbage and schnitzel. It was awesome and it was not served in a bowl (picture I saw on this stream). It was served on a plate. The red cabbage was not at all vinegar tasting and had apple slices in it. I do not know if that is how it is served in Germany, but it was a very tasting combination. We loved our meal. My husband had ordered the clam chowder and said it was really good, but he later asked for a taste of the butternut squash soup and wished he had gotten that instead. I myself do not like butternut squash at all. But at his 'urging' I tasted it. It was awesome!!!! Unbelievably great and I told my husband, who loves butternut squash, he better figure out how to make that soup! We had a great waitress and good time. Definately will be going back there next time we are up there. P.S. we were told that the Chef has a 'foodie groupie' following since he was found to be there and continues on. read more

Spending an October afternoon on Apple Hill. John (5 stars himself!) our host at Lava Cap recommended The Forester for lunch. I was skeptical of finding any good food in the area but decided to trust John's recommendation. The restaurant has the character of a place that's been around for a long time but in a good way. They seated us on the back deck and allowed us to bring in our two small dogs. Our waiter was great. It was like a performance! He was entertaining, funny, interacted with our dogs, and kept the show rolling. You will know you got him by his Boston accent. The most important part of this review is how high the quality of the food coming out of the kitchen was. We had very simple lunch food. Fish and chips, fish sandwiches, grilled chicken salad. The food show the kitchen really cared about quality and flavor. The batter on the onion rings was crispy yet not oily. The onion was super sweet, the cook found the sweetest onions for the onion rings. The grilled chicken on the salad was grilled to perfection and i suspect the blue cheese dressing was house made. It is the kind of place where you want to try everything on the menu because your confident it is going to be great. Did I mention they also do German food. I'll have to save that for our next trip to Apple Hill! You will not be disappointed. read more

Different from Poor Reds but delicious without a 90-minute wait. Lots of beers on tap. Informed wine list from Vintners in Amador and El Dorado counties. We had a Pre Thanksgiving gathering of our family from Folsom, San Jose, Pleasanton, Mill Valley, Sparks, NV and Camino. We checked Yelp ratings and chose The Forester Restaurant. We tried their menu: fish and chips , burgers, meat loaf and noted the German food. We chose to have German food for Thanksgiving dinner for 11. The team and chef were very accommodating with timing on a Sunday and at 1:30 pm. We chose mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, spaetzle, red cabbage, dumplings and 2 types of gravy and Wiener schnitzel.. We picked up the food and brought it home. The food was still hot when we opened the containers. It was true to the taste of German food we had in Milwaukee and in Germany. There was very little left over to take home. We plan to do this next year. read more

Forest pub in the heart of Camino serving drinks, hearty traditional American and German food at reasonable prices (Bay Area pricing minus $1-2), but not cheap since the menu features mostly meat dishes. Entrees range from $13 to $21. There's even a kid's menu, for the kiddos, or maybe, hopefully for those with petite appetites. Burgers and steaks are a safe bet, but try the Hungarian Goulash or Schnitzel for a culinary adventure without having to hop on a flight. I tried the Jagerschnitzel, flattened pork, breaded, fried and smothered with bacon mushroom gravy. The dish, overall, was too salty for my liking, but it might be because I haven't been eating a lot of restaurant-prepared foods lately. The cooked red cabbage is heavy on something... sugar and spice and not everything nice. There were apple slices in there, too, which could be the sweet culprit. Definitely an appropriate side dish for the hearty cold-weather dishes. I didn't love my chicken and dumplings. Chicken was a bit dry and I was hoping for some juicy thigh meat. Dumpling was the light Bisquick type. I think the menu said 1/2 chicken, but it was boneless chicken breast and bone-in drumstick. No thigh meat? Spaetzle noodles were fun to eat, but just okay for me. Chicken tortilla soup is tasty, with chicken meat, crunchy tortilla strips and gooey shredded cheese. Salad is nice than the basic iceberg and shredded carrot/cabbage variety. I believe it was romaine with cherry tomato and sliced beets. The 1/3 lb 100% ground chuck burgers come with lettuce and tomato and a side. Cheese, avocado, bacon, sautéed mushrooms are an extra $1 each. Juicy and salty, when you're in Camino and need your burger fix. For dessert, we shared a berry pie (strawberry crumble??) with vanilla ice cream. Good stuff. Full from our entrees, we managed to clean that up nicely. Overall, it's a nice place for dining out with friendly service, plenty of options and easy parking right in front. read more
