We were a party of 14 and called in first thing the day of for a reservation. When we arrived we were squeezed onto a long picnic table that would comfortably fit 10 people. We sat very crowded. The waiter was two weeks new on the job and did adequate. We were disappointed when we told the staff of that we were there celebrating a birthday. We asked if they could do something special for the occasion, but we were informed that they had no small token of a food item or drink for the birthday person, or any sort of recognition that you find at most restaurants when celebrating a birthday with 14 people eating at the establishment. It is disappointing when I bring in 14 people to spend their hard earned money on dinner, and we received no acknowledgment of the birthday. I ordered the nachos which was a large portion. It had lots of ingredients, and could easily be shared by two or three people. The giant pretzel for $16 was GIANT. It made a great presentation, and was shared all around the table. Not nearly as good as Auntie Anne's pretzels at the Ridgedale Mall, but a fun treat none the less. The chicken tenders were flat with a thin layer of breading- not greasy at all and probably my favorite of the things I ordered. The quantities were large and the prices were reasonable. The waiter was so slow in clearing the plates that we had to "bus" the tables of the dirty dishes as we continued our conversations after dinner. A fun place to grab dinner, but not in a large group or for a birthday celebration. Have to give it 2 stars. read more

The food menu struck me as bare-bones, fitting on one side of a sheet, while the selection of drinks fills up the other side. So it's probably more a place to get some brews. I ordered the hamburger and while the patty itself was tasty, much was missing, like lettuce, onions, tomato, etc. I found the old bubblegum music played on the loudspeakers annoying. My friend was racially profiled at this place and shorted liquor because he "would not tip as much" this hurts my heart as i loved this place. I will never be back as the manager and security told us to leave because "it was the end of the night". I myself as a white male ordered a shot from the same bartender and got more than my black friend. We tested this throughout the night and the same result. Absolutely horrible experience throughout whole night. This bartender as i did not catch his name was a bald asian man at the middle outdoor bar. I love the patio!! I love the environment!! I appreciated our waitress trying to give us good service. The food was awful. The Mac and cheese was straight out of a Kraft mac and cheese box with spicy cheese sauce poured all over it. There wasn't any real cheese in the whole dish. I sent it back and got a burger...that was served on a rock hard pretzel bun. My 2 friends ordered sandwiches that they couldn't finish. I came here many years and enjoyed sitting out on the patio. It was a casual restaurant but still enjoyable. I was pretty sure they had indoor dining too. I came here last night with three other people. The weather has been nice so i wanted a great patio to sit out on. I noticed that there was no seating inside, no tables or anything. Outside, all the tables were plastic picnic tables. It was seat yourself. The menu was a cheap, one page menu. My husband commented "this is the bar menu, where's the real menu?". A server came and we ordered drinks. It took over 10 minutes to get two of our drinks and another 10 for the other two, not sure why it was split up. My husband and I ordered the nachos to share, choice between pork, beef, or chicken, $15. I thought that was spendy but we were splitting them, we got pork. My friends got the fried fish and the cheeseburger. The nachos were on a standard sized paper plate, the chips were stale and soggy from the nacho cheese on them. When we commented this to the server, she said she could get us more chips, but im not sure how this would help as they were already stale. When my friend asked if we could get a discount she said no because we were already eating them. If we hadn't eaten them, we wouldn't have known how bad they were. These were the worst nachos I have ever had. My friend's fish was soggy as well. The restaurant had more of a college bar feel to it than it used to. I was very disappointed and unfortunately will not be coming back. I went on their website to see if it was explained at all for the change. Pictures showed how it used to be, however if you read the description, it said the seating was long tables to mimic a beer garden. If you want a place to just get drunk and not care about food, this will probably work, they did have a good draft beer selection and other drinks as well. read more

First of all, I want to say that I love Stillwater. I love the history, the location, the attractions, it is all good. So I was excited to get a chance to try The Freighthouse, with its prime location and huge patio deck overlooking the St. Croix River. The food was great here too, albeit a bit pricey, but portions were good and the quality was great. Many of the sandwiches had nice additions such as a special sauce or added "wow" ingredient. Even the pickles were tasty! And the fries were super crispy and delicious (even though I didn't order them, but more of that later). THAT would have won this place the 5-stars for sure BUT...I was highly disappointed in their wait staff. We had a waitress that honestly I feel like was smoking "something" in the back before she would come and wait on us. She was a complete air head and spacey, just all over the place. I went with a group of seven people, and we all ordered burgers. How hard can that be, right? Well it didn't look good when it took almost 5 whole minutes for one of my friends to try and order a burger with no cheese. I don't think our waitress could understand English that well, because man that shouldn't be that hard! (And in all reality, I don't think she really could speak or understand English fully...which is not a problem, but don't make your service suck because of it!) A few of us ordered sweet potato fries, and she confirmed it with us like three times. What happens when the food comes? No sweet potato fries, and when one of the guys I'm with brings it up, she just brushes him off with an airhead smile and giggle. Really? Another one of my friends ordered sour cream for her sweet potato fries (yeah, she got them) and ended up getting cream cheese or something like that. To top it all off, when the food came, she totally forgot one of the orders. You write the order and then bring out the order, keep it simple stupid. All in all, this place would have been easily a five star rating from me but with crappy service like we received, you are not getting it from me. I will come back and give this place one more try, but if I see the airhead waitress working, I'm not setting foot in the place. Sunday night and the place isn't crowded? Yeah. Something's off. Again, should have listened to the reviews before we sat down. My wife ordered a sandwich and wanted coleslaw on the side in addition to the fries, and there was some sort of misunderstanding, and later, asked if she could get the fries and the coleslaw and was told by the waitress that, no she couldn't because the food was probably already in the window. It wasn't. Half our table had food and the other half (including the children) waited about another 10-12 minuets before the food came out. In that time, there should have been an opportunity to add fries to the plate. The service is awful and the food was uneatable. This place used to be decent, but man it's gone way down hill. I know a few people who like this place and I've heard about this place through them. Maybe it was just the night we came but our service was horrible. The food was pretty good but the service was horrible. The only highlight of our service was Lance, and we weren't even in his section. We found a place to sit down and kept trying to ask someone to help us. Servers kept telling us someone would be with us or they aren't suppose to be serving. I get it, but find someone to help us. We were told it was crazy busy but couldn't see it as busy. Lance came by and asked if we have been helped. He informed us that he was working in the next room and it was busy but he would help us. He was great. We tried to tip him well but The Freight House had already left a negative impression on us. When were ready to leave, no one helped us. This place is fun with a great view - hence the 2 stars. The rest of our experience was unremarkable. I couldn't help but notice that while the guys were wearing typical summer attire, the girls were dressed like they work at Hooters. Not really my scene. We had the chips with dips ($8 for little tubs of guac, salsa, and some sour cream with taco seasoning), buffalo tenders ($insane), and our favorite part - the beer battered fries we stole from our son's cheeseburger kids meal ($7). My husband had the Pilsner and enjoyed it, I had the punch and liked it enough to have another. Suffice it to say that we will be back because this is the only patio big enough to accommodate the crowds in downtown. They have a great selection of appetizers that are easily shareable and we were all in agreement that the fried chicken sandwich was fantastic. I've been there twice - once with a group of Friends (a gorgeous MN autumn Saturday afternoon) another time with a couple of close friends ( a beautiful summer early evening) both times everyone had a wonderful time. The patio overlooking the St. Croix river is so nice. It's a Burlington Northern train station converted to a brewpub - such a beautiful building, too. Great service and the American staples foods - I' had Willy the Kid sandwich both times,- their signature sandwich - house made chicken salad atop a pineapple ring, melted swiss cheese on grilled cinnamon raisin bread which - sounds unusual? It's really yummy. There is also a historic Stillwater trolley ride that leaves from the restaurant parking lot which is excellent. I love guided tours, and this one does not disappoint - I should probably do a separate review :) read more

I was rather disappointed with my visit to freight house. The first red flag was the fact that you couldn't ask for any substitutions on any menu items. My cousin simply want to get a slice of cheese on her burger, but the request was refused. The reasoning was that it was too busy and the kitchen would get over whelmed, this didn't make sense because the restaurant was nearly empty. I got the shrimp ceviche, it was very underwhelming, it was really watery and there was not nearly enough shrimp. Also the bathrooms were dirty and unkept. And 2 out of the 5 washroom stalls didn't have any locks. The only redeeming factors of Freight House was the amazing view of the St.Croix river, and the awesome coleslaw. Also their menu was very interesting, filled with many different types of burgers and sandwiches. So I would come back and try something else. read more

Went on a Sunday to sit outside. It was pretty busy outside, not so much inside. I'm writing this review because I don't agree with the low rating for the FH. I got a veggie burger with avocado. It was probably the best veggie burger I've had in MN (been here for 2 years). The fries were also among the best I've had in a while. To add insult to injury, when we parked in their tiny lot, we were accosted by two teenage females who asked us if we were eating there and said We could only park there if we were. We were hungry and didn't feel like finding another spot somewhere else on what seemed like a very crowded Saturday in town. We hadn't planned on it and clearly should've listened to our intuition. There was almost nothing on the menu that wasn't completely fried or breaded/or with bread. And we soon discovered or that wasn't completely covered in salt. We don't eat wheat so this was definitely the wrong place to go. We had to be somewhere for a wedding and stopped by for a late lunch. Between our two meals, we were both nervous about now sitting through a wedding with a bunch of people we don't know without quick access to a bathroom after all that salt, grease and water. The joke continued as our server had the personality of a funeral home attendant and the entire place smelled like mold. We will never go back! read more

Not only was she extremely attentive, fast and what I would consider to be the perfect bartender; she also jumped in on a traumatizing medical at the bar. Horrendous service, rude staff, inaccurate prices. Went there as a small group that is part of a huge meetup group that would have brought in a ton of future business if our experience had been adequate. We ordered drinks. A sign on the side of the building showed the prices of the specialty cocktails several of us ordered. It was right next to our table. The server was slow, not very attentive but she was spread out across the entire huge patio. Ordered food. It was ok. Our bill came (slowly) and we saw that the prices of the cocktails were $1-2 more than posted on the wall. Asked the server to fix it. She said the prices on the wall were wrong, the menu was right but she'd see if she could fix it. She came back, it was being fixed but would take a few minutes. Then we find out it isn't going to be fixed. Asked for the manager. The "manager" comes over with an attitude. Tells us the rain had swollen the board with the prices and they couldn't take them down. We suggested some tape over the prices but they'd have to honor those prices. More attitude. A single member of our group said one swear word to her. She went to get the bouncers. We checked how "stuck" the sign was. Some were stuck but not all of them, the one that was $2 off came out easily. Bouncer tells the swearing member of our group he's credited our bill $12 (out of $221 we spent) but he can't come back. No problem there, none of us would be back. We try to point out to the bouncer that they have the prices right in front of us. This just seems to piss him off more and he tells us to leave, bill unpaid. We're very active members of our meetup group. We've notified our main organizer that we won't go back there so the hundreds of people in the group won't be there either. read more

The past 3 times I've been to the freight house, I've either felt the waiters hate their jobs or just hate the people they are serving within seconds. When we asked for a bigger table when we knew more guests were arriving our waiters response was "are you kidding me? I'm not getting you waters if that's the case" A place where they are upset you are bringing in more guests and asking a simple request as such needs to seriously reconsider the people they hire and the management practices they have. I live in the Phoenix, AZ area and was in Minnesota recently to visit friends. We wound up coming here twice for lunch in a five day span. The building is very large with a lodge-like feel. There's a huge patio with great views of the river. There was also a very large room that I think they use for private parties, weddings, etc. This is a casual restaurant with a menu to match. On my first visit I had the Elk Burger. I ordered this because you just can't find a good Elk Burger in Phoenix - OK, you can't find an Elk Burger at all in Phoenix. Large portions, and it was good. On my second visit I tried the Wisconsin Fish Fry. Also very good; I raised my glass to the nice people from Wisconsin on the other side of the water. If you're in Stillwater (and you really should go to Stillwater) the Freight House is a good choice for a meal. read more

OK, this was to be the start of the 4th annual boating weekend down the Mississippi. I was going to review places along the way, enjoy the sun, some nice wine, a few rums...that sort of thing. Then everything went down hill. First was the weather of course. Low 60's in July, go figure. Second was the clouds (OK, really all the weather but 60 and sunny is better than 60 and cloudy). Third was stopping for lunch here. Don't get me wrong, I love Stillwater, love the St. Croix and everything in between. We decided on Stillwater the first day out and made it there about noon so it was time for a bite and a cocktail. I have eaten at various places in Stillwater and always liked the choice for the most part. I know I have eaten at the Freight House before and thought it was OK. Don't remember going home and raving about it but I went back! Well something was different this time. Service was horrible for a Thursday afternoon on the deck. We waited way to long for a server to come around. Factor this with there being several of them standing around with seemingly nothing to do. You would think some one would take the initiative to at least walk over and say "someone will be with you shortly". No go! After a while, with a drink in hand the wait doesn't seem so bad (sort of). I take the easy out with a weekend of hopefully good food ahead and order the Black Angus Burger with Bacon and Cheese. OK, $9.00 Ala cart, fries are extra. I know not the healthiest choice but it was a Thursday noon, no breakfast, wanted something hearty and I wasn't even thinking of eating the bun. To start, I ordered Cheddar Cheese and the waiter tells me they have "white cheddar, is that OK" I say yes knowing in my mind that is not OK. Cheddar is meant to be Orange for god sake...not white. They are right across the river from WI and they can't get a nice selection of cheese? It blows me away that a chef will think about a top quality meat to use in a burger but won't give any thought to the type of cheese they put on top. Take a drive and explore the land of cheese across the river, it's not far! Part two, food comes, drinks empty, it took a while. For a restaurant with a large menu I don't understand something as simple as a burger. Pretty normal fair that with a little bit of work can make people come back for the better items. Fries, doesn't get any easier than that. Take your time, keep them from being greasy and serve them hot. This burger looked pressed from a box, frozen and than cooked without thought. The bun, I am pretty sure, was from Costco. Not to say it was bad, I love Costco just don't expect one of their rolls serving as a $9.00 burger bun. Now that I think about it they have Black Angus Burgers at Costco too. I do generally like those though. This burger was dry, tasteless and really very poor. Bun was dry, had a little bit of grease wiped on it to pass for butter or something of that nature. Came with a nice pickle (compliment) but sad excuse for a tomato and wrinkly old lettuce. Hmm, $9.00 for bacon and a good pickle. Almost done, when the waiter came back he very obviously went out of his way not to ask how the meal was. I was nice and didn't let on my displeasure but I was ready to give my opinion if asked. To his credit he knew enough not to ask. I guess he has probably ordered the burger himself. Overall, pretty OK place. Very basic food, great view of a beautiful area and nice deck. Good place to have drinks with friends. Just stay on the waiter for service and don't order the Black Angus Burger. If you do, try the Costco ones and see if I'm right...and bring your own cheese! KT read more

Stopped here with my wife for dinner on a Sunday night. It's in a great location. Sitting on their porch gave a great view of the river and nice Stillwater atmosphere. I ordered their bloody mary bar. I ordered it prior to going to actually see the bar. There had been a nice selection, however it looked like a pack of famished dogs had destroyed it (because of cleanliness and remaining selection). For food my wife and I shared a "freighthouse" pizza. Not bad pizza, fresh ingredients, descent for the price. My wife ordered a strawberry milkshake for dessert. She is a bit of an ice cream connoisseur but even in my opinion it was gross. If your going for a nice view of the river your'll enjoy this place. If you want good food, walk a 100ft across the road to Docks Cafe. read more

I was surprised I had such a good lunch here, because in the past it's been hit or miss. I think I've decided-get the salad, and don't get disappointed. It was beautiful out on the water, and my mom, husband, sister, and her friend and I were hanging out in Stillwater. We stopped for lunch after the rush, but it was still pretty crowded. My sister, mom, and I all ordered the Cobb salad, which was great. My mom and I split it, and we still had very generous portions-with no lettuce at the bottom! My sister's friend had the chicken Caesar which she loved, and my husband had the fish and chips which he wasn't thrilled with. The fries were cold. I was happy to be back-I love sitting on the water watching the boats go by in the summer-and now I know what to order. When I had their burgers and sandwiches, I just wasn't that impressed. read more
