While visiting Old Town Scottsdale we stumbled upon a Native American owned restaurant called Gary Bread Lounge, and since we had actually made fry bread in the past we were eager to give them a try The restaurant itself was a bit eclectic. Part of it could have been that it was Valentine's Day weekend, and they had Valentines decorations up that were fairly different from the rest of the normal decor. There was plenty of seating inside (no exterior seating) The menu offered a variety of indigenous dishes as well as more "American" dishes with a Native American flair. There are also cocktails, mocktails, and a variety of other beverages to choose from. We tried a couple dishes and the fry bread and everything was delicious The service was great, and we felt well taken care of. Again, this is a Native American run operation and the staff are all Native American which is awesome Some tips: I would definitely try one of the indigenous dishes as they are delicious, but also, where else will you get to try them? I was really excited to try this restaurant because it's been quite a while since I've had fry bread, and I love supporting Indigenous-owned businesses. The space itself is beautiful, thoughtfully decorated, and clearly celebrates Indigenous culture and community. I also appreciated seeing support for Indigenous small businesses and the queer community throughout the restaurant. My mother and I shared the Fry Bread Flight, which comes with four accompaniments: powdered sugar, honey, Lakota berry sauce, and tepary bean hummus. We also ordered the mushroom tacos on blue corn tortillas and a Dirty Prickly Pear Refresher. The standout of the meal was definitely the Dirty Prickly Pear Refresher. It was refreshing, slightly fruity, and very easy to drink, the sweetness of the prickly pear balanced the tequila so well that it almost disappeared. The Fry Bread Flight was absolutely worth ordering and is perfect for sharing. The fry bread arrived hot, fluffy, and golden brown. My favorite topping was the Lakota berry sauce, which had a nice balance of tart and sweet. The tepary bean hummus was also excellent, creamy, flavorful, and well-seasoned. If you're visiting for the first time, this is a dish I would recommend!! Unfortunately, the mushroom tacos were a letdown. The mushroom filling itself was flavorful, but the blue corn tortillas were cold, stiff, and seemed underprepared. When we mentioned it, the explanation was that the tortillas are warmed ahead of time and the filling is added later... While I appreciated the explanation, no effort was made to reheat or replace the dish. The tacos honestly felt as though they had been sitting out for a while before being served. The service was another weak point of the visit. Our server seemed distracted and frequently stopped to chat with other employees, even when we were trying to get assistance. We also had several questions about the menu that couldn't be answered, which was surprising given the unique ingredients and cultural significance of many of the dishes. Overall, we didn't feel especially welcomed or engaged during our meal. What makes this review difficult is that there is so much potential here. The food itself, when executed well, is delicious! The fry bread alone is worth trying, and I appreciate having an Indigenous restaurant in the area! For now, I'm landing at 3 stars because the excellent fry bread and drink couldn't fully make up for the cold tacos and underwhelming service. I stopped by for dinner this past Saturday, and the restaurant atmosphere was welcoming, casual and homey with flowery decor hanging from the ceiling, as well as clouds illuminated by color-changing lights. Staff was friendly and excited to share the history of the place as the first native-owned restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale. The food items each have their own history too, with the restaurant serving mainly bison meat and very few dairy options on the menu. I ordered the bison ribeye frybread sandwich and this was unexpectedly humongous! I cut it in half, and it was like two full-sized sandwiches. But omg it was so good and I was so hungry, I finished the whole thing. It had me stuffed. That frybread was irresistible -- light, fluffy, and flavorful. This was a great spot! My boba sistah recommended it for lunch and we met here one late morning. I hadn't heard of it but then I found out they are fairly new. According to their website, they are the "first and only Native-owned restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale. [Their] dishes feature fresh local cropping, such as beans from Ramona Farms on the local O'odham Nation, just outside of Chandler". There were only two other parties present which I prefer; I don't like to dine-in when it's so busy. Parking was free and plentiful during this time. The lights are dim inside and I enjoyed the music playing; caught a country tune or two. Our server was competent and efficient and her quick rundown of "no pork, chicken or beef: just bison" was a great introduction to this restaurant. I had briefly looked at the menu earlier and the frybread flight caught my eye, but I decided to order the vegetarian Native frybread taco (FRYBREAD TOPPED WITH VEGETARIAN O'ODHAM TEPARY CHILI BEANS | ROMAINE LETTUCE | DICED TOMATOES | SHREDDED CHEDDAR CHEESE | DICED ONION | RED OR GREEN SALSA). I went with the red salsa and it was spicy and delicious. The whole plate was! It was generously topped with beans and the other toppings and the frybread was light, chewy and tasty. Absolutely delicious bison, cooked perfectly, and layered with an incredibly tasty chimichurri and greens.. But there were only a few chunks of bison in there. It was absolutely overpriced for how little meat you got which was a bit frustrating. Yes, its farm to table, yes bison is typically a bit more expensive in general. But dang, for $26 bucks I expected at least 3oz of meat. Don't come here looking for a large portion of protein, and for many that is perfectly fine, you'll enjoy the flavors. read more

We came today on a Sunday a little before 1pm. They were pretty busy but we we secured a table for two. We ordered the set of 3 Burrito St. tacos and a bison ribeye fry bread taco. The Birria tacos were pretty good but a little spicy for me. The Fry bread taco with pesto was so large that it easily fed the two of us and was delicious. The fillings were nice, but the fry bread is the star of the show. This is the best we've ever had; so light and fluffy. Celeste does an amazing job with the Fry bread and making it the most important ingredient of every meal. Everyone is always friendly and our meal came out pretty fast. My mom and I decided to stop in to grab a bite to eat after our hair appointment and it was pretty empty. The ambiance is cute but didn't feel very restaurant like. I love supporting local and love that they used farm to table/local indigenous ingredients. The food was really tasty. Do wish the bison stood out a bit more on the fry bread taco! The service however was just okay. She was nice enough but seemed to be more busy with office work/sidework. When we were packing up our food to go and had already cashed out I went to ask for an extra side of salsa to go...to which she informed me she'd have to charge me an extra $1. A little pricey for a side of salsa but whatever it's fine so I handed her my card and when she brought me back the receipt to sign she had charged me $2. When she brought the salsa I kindly questioned her and she said oh yeah I meant it was $2 and handed me a barely half filled Togo ramekin!!! I have the money to spend $2 but that's not the point...I work in customer service and if you tell someone one price you don't just change it cause you made a mistake, you either adjust the price or you ask the guest before just charging extra, just seemed shady to me and very overpriced for the smallest side of salsa. I stopped by The Frybread Lounge with my mom for a late lunch on a Sunday after checking out Western Spirit: Scottsdale's Museum of the West. As is the norm in Old Town, even though it's a busy area, there's a bunch of street parking. And it's free. We parked by the museum and then walked over. Ambiance (3.5/5): It's a relatively small restaurant with a few seats at the bar, a sofa with some seats surrounding it, and some tables and booths. The ambiance is nice, though it's not my aesthetic. A little too "ladies who brunch" vibe for me, but that's just a personal preference. The location is also great with it being in the heart of Old Town. Service (3/5): Service was quite slow. It took us about 10 minutes to be greeted once we walked into the restaurant, which was a bit strange. All of the waiters and bartenders were serving customers and didn't at once look to the front of the restaurant until quite some time had passed. From there, service picked up until the end, where I had to flag my waiter down to get the bill. Friendly service, just not efficient. Drinks (N/A): I went with a lemonade, so not much to write home about. They do have adult beverages including cocktails, if that tickles your fancy. Food (4/5): One of the things I love about Phoenix is the ability to have indigenous food. This was my third time doing it since I moved to Phoenix. Perhaps the most popular Native American food is fry bread. Often served as a taco, just think of it as a taco with the tortilla replaced with fluffy fried bread. Though it was one of the most expensive items on the menu, I couldn't help but trying the bison ribeye sandwich which comes with indigenous pesto, cilantro, and tomatoes on fry bread. In fact, their menu specializes in bison and most of the options are bison-based. Which is a treat and not something I have every day. While I've had ground bison before, this was my first time having a bison filet. And it was delicious! The fry bread I've had in the past is super oily. Not here. It was a great dish overall. My only complaints? The sandwich doesn't come with a side and it's quite pricey. Overall, the food is good but I think it's a bit overpriced given the portion sizes and what you get. I guess it makes sense given where the restaurant is located. With a more solid service experience, they'd be a four-star in my book. read more

The service here was great and I did find the ambiance to be nice. I ordered the Vegetarian Native Frybread Taco ( I did hold the tomato and had the salsa on the side for dipping.) The tepary chili beans were plentiful but I found them to be too firm for my liking and without much of a distinctive flavor. I really didn't care for them at all - a bit of a problem since they were the main feature. The frybread itself was executed well though. Prices are high here, perhaps to keep up with Old Town rent. Over time, they developed their own unique cultural cuisine, through the generations, passed down by elders, and to them I am thankful for their culinary contributions. The Frybread Lounge needs more recognition. Hailing from the REZ (Reservation), it is the first Native American-owned Restaurant in Old Town Scottsdale. It is only fitting because there are shops with Native art and merchandise up and down the streets and now a restaurant representing the region. However, it is not the typical pretentious eatery of the area. It's not fancy inside by any means. Let's face it, the decor looks like it came from a Reservation yard sale. But the food and drinks contradict its meager appearance. If there is such thing as an upscale dive bar, then this would be the rezpective restaurant. This place is one where you can gather with a group of friends or family for a chill night or stop in before you light up the town. Frybread Lounge has their own signature drinks, so you can get liquored up here for the pre-party. Ironically, no reservations are required here (the twisted irony), but there are plenty of tables to accommodate. If you are in need of carbs; Frybread Lounge is here to the Rezcue! The menu may contain a lot of carb-loaded items, but you are goin to need them for later if you indulge in the nightlife. The bread will help soak up all the liquor! REZident Musicians- On Saturdays, local musical artists are given the mic to belt some melodies. There is no schedule of musicians since randoms can sign up to play. So you are essentially you are getting a surprise performance each time. Our singer happened to do some acoustic versions of oldies and classic top 40 songs. The performance this night was good, and the tunes played were actually pretty chill, so the music was not off-putting while you eat. FRYBREAD - the Piece de REZistance! The bread was so fluffly and thick, yet airy. The doughy bread had just a bit of a bite to it for a little chewiness while still slightly crisp on the outside. The bread has such a good texture that it is very versatile as put to use in various dishes on the menu. The prickly pear syrup was nice and sweet and I thought this was a smart flavor to tie into Arizona's background. REZ CHARCUTERIE- for this adult lunchable, the frybread dough was repurposed in such a way that it was grilled, giving it a pita or naan consistency. This went perfect with the bean spread which was like a hummus. The bread portion was generous, so it lasted with the ample heap of meat and fruit on the plate. Even though this unassuming place is somewhat of a divey little restaurant amongst all their upscale neighbors, it has bites that will rival the competition in flavor. I love NDN tacos and what I appreciated most about this one was how light, crisp, and fresh the frybread was until the very last bite! It was perfect - not greasy, soggy, or tough. We started with a fried bread sampler which came with hummus, a berry type sauce, powdered sugar, and honey. The fry bread was the best I've ever had served warm and delicious and not at all greasy. In retrospect, I should have had it as dessert. I ordered the Three Sisters salad which came with black and blue berries, and, of course beans, squash and corn ( hominy). There were plenty of other ingredients to make it interesting, and the vinaigrette was fabulous, with just a touch of sweetness. The restaurant does not serve meat except for bison, which my husband ordered. It was lean and tender, cooked just right. There is a full bar with specialty cocktails as well as a variety of teas. No hospitality. The Bison Navajo taco had no visible meat. The native beans were cold and completely lacked flavor. A $22 appetizer came with minimal condiments that didn't justify the price. There was zero bottled water available -- which is unacceptable for guests with medical needs, including organ transplant patients who rely on sealed beverages for safety. The neon sign says, "This is where the magic happens." It wasn't. Over $100 for three people and we left with no quality, no service, and no warmth. Do it right -- or don't do it at all. read more

We wanted to try something unique and this place did that. First off, our server was super friendly and helpful. We ordered the bison burger and bison birrio tacos since we rarely have bison. Bison is a little tougher and more rugged tasting. Sorry, I can't think of a better word to describe the taste. The portion for the burger was huge and perfect for sharing. The fry bread was yummy but made the burger heavy and very filling. The sweet potato fries that came with the burger were good. The tacos were a good portion size and good for sharing along with the burgers. The bison in the tacos was tender. A tad spicy but good. I also got the Navajo tea which touted some health benefits and tasted earthy. I liked the taste but wished that they didn't put so much ice in it. The atmosphere was artistic and comfortable.
