Well, during our "winter", my compressor sprang a leak and spewed its 1994 Freon all over the Earth's ozone. Sorry. Anyway, since I had the luxury of shopping for bids during our winter, I opted to get 4 bids before deciding on a final contractor. Think of it this way: How often do any of us shop for central air/heat? I think we shop for cars more often so I wanted to be careful in such a big decision. Here's the rundown: * Fly Comfort Services: Recommended both outside compressor and inside air handler be replaced for $4,700. Cash discount of 2.5%. No charge for evaluation. Found these guys via a fellow Yelper. They were flakier than a Crisco crust on writing up the bid in a timely manner (not a good impression for all that money they wanted to charge me). * Comfort Star: Recommended both outside compressor and inside air handler be replaced for $4,500. Cash discount of 2.5%. Charged $45 trip charge. Found these guys via Yelp search. The owner (Mr. Khoury) was very patient on discussing details and the technician's visit was very thorough (about 1.5 hours). * AC Repair Houston: Recommended only the outside compressor to be replaced for $1,850. No cash discount. No charge for evaluation. Found them via Yelp search. Mr. Jack Jensen is the salt of the earth; actually mentioned that many of his AC brethren have reputations similar to used car salesmen. * M&L Air Conditioning: Recommended only the outside compressor to be replaced for $1,700. No cash discount. No charge for evaluation. Referred by my Realtor who I've worked with on the buying and the selling sides. Winner: M&L Air Conditioning! Mr. Atkins was friendly, down-to-earth, approachable, and informative. He didn't try to sell me on anything unnecessary and even pointed out the pros, cons, and secondary alternatives of the replacement options. He's so confident in his work that he doubled the usual 1-year labor warranty for free. He provided an arrival time window (10 to noon) but, unlike the evil Comcast, he arrived at 1010 AM for his projected 3-hour installation. He even finished 20 minutes ahead of the installation timetable, despite my periodic questions of "What's that?" I wrote him a personal check for the $1,750 once the Goodman 13 SEER 2-ton compressor, condenser pad, and programmable thermostat were installed and tested. With the blizzard of contractor visits, I've learned a lot about the old and new refrigerant standards, the minimum SEER ratings, air handlers, compressor-condensers, pads, duct work, and fair prices for all of these items. I also got pretty dang good at verifying their licenses at the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation website, too. I'm almost sure that I could get an AC contractor license easily with the volume that I know now. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a date with my new A/C system to spend some quality time chilling things down. Last week we called to report ac went out and line was possibly clogged and needed to be cleaned. Cameron came out and just cut the hose and charged $200 after saying what a horrible setup we have that AINSWORTH did! Glad he was so honest! Next day we had water EVERYWHERE because he never used a SHOP VAC to clean or do anything. I guess he thought cutting the hose where it could possibly be clogged what do the job, but even me (a nurse) knows better than that. You could turn the AC off for a couple hours and turn it back on and of course it will run and that is exactly what he did after we had it off for several hours. He just turned it back on and said everything was OK! Worst service ever! And to actually know we are maintenance clients we should've had a little bit of a better experience. We have now switched companies and have a great service team now.!

Tony told me he is busy, but he would make it here before the day end. Tony showed up only a few hours after I called him and got to work fast! He tested everything and found the cause of the problem, the gas valve was not working. It is a special part usually they need to order it. He actually went out of his way, tracked one down, then we and picked it up and fixed the valve. He also cleaned my flame sensor, tested all safety switches and low behold I had heat! I shopped around on a Saturday and a contacted 10 companies who ranged from 12,000.00, 8,000.00, 7,600.00 and everything in between. Now, mind you they were all talking the same language giving me the same 10-ton unit and the R 54. I was confused. I finally spoke to Reza of All Electric and AC who assured me that they had the best price, better 10 yr warranty and 2 yrs maintenance at $6,599.00. The job was professionally done, it took about 3 hours, they were clean, the young gentleman swept my floors and stairs. All material outside were picked up and everything runs perfectly and a new thermostat that can be controlled from my phone. When the other companies tell you, well they are cheaper because you won't get the same quality things, that's a lie. Reza match the $12,000.00 price apples for apples. We believe these guys would be quite ok at selecting, installing, and maintaining conventional HVAC…read moresystems. But anyone interested in mini splits and VRF technology should read our story before choosing to work with Morgan Pro. We trusted them to 1) assess our home for the most energy-efficient HVAC system it could accommodate and 2) install it correctly. Morgan Pro failed to do either. Their $3K Manual J assessment of our 1500 sq. ft home determined it needed a 5-ton HVAC system. It took them over 30 visits to fully install a VRF system in our house and to get it functional--two inverters outside (they accidentally blew up the first one) and 6 mini splits through our home in all the ceilings. During that time, they also caused unnecessary damage: cutting extra joists, drawing on antique trim, and they compensated us for that. The HVAC system passed city inspection, but it never worked 100%. As Morgan Pro kept trying to fix it, we had to agree to things they had promised to avoid--wall thermostats everywhere, humidity and noise levels that were too high, and on and on. When water started pouring from our new ceilings in the middle of a Houston summer, it was clear to everyone that the system was simply wrong for our house. But instead of taking responsibility for their enormous failure, Morgan Pro blamed the two things we had paid them many thousands to professionally assess: our house, and the system! Their next move was to conduct a test on our home, claiming it now needed 8 tons of HVAC (!), not 5, and that we pay them a further $14K to get it up to 8 tons. Knowing it was utterly laughable that our 1500 sq. ft house was an 8-ton home, our only next step was a legal dispute to get them to give us a correctly-sized and functional system for the money they had already taken for us, with consequent delays to a remedy. Shocked and exhausted, we decided that delay was worse than simply severing ties with an inept business we could never trust again. Morgan Pro ended up waiving thousands we still owed them so they could crawl away from their own meaningless install guarantee, and we were relieved to see them go. We then removed the entire system (see photos) and installed a conventional one (4 tons!) which has worked perfectly from the start, costs much less to run, is much quieter, and is a great fit for the structure of our fully renovated historical home. Our new HVAC technician who extracted system has installed the same units many times before. He pointed out the clear mistakes he saw in Morgan Pro's installation, and said the technology was also just not suited to our house. Morgan Pro's supplier and factory rep (who they depended on almost exclusively) were also at fault and we are making formal reports to their respective professional boards and the manufacturer as well. All of them failed us abysmally, but none more than Morgan Pro: they failed to do right by our home and us, when that was their *only* job for which we paid many thousands in good faith while supporting their efforts in our home for months with remarkable patience and kindness. Everlasting shame on them. We have written this review so that other Houston customers can be well informed. We would hate for the same experience to happen to anyone else because we had remained silent about their record with us. One star is for their fantastic office staff and their young tech Ricky, who always worked as hard as he could to do his best, though he was way out of his depth on these units.
