Yelpers of FL have led my family to the Gem. Sketchy from the outside where the Gem is nestled between a thrift shop and beauty mega store in a strip mall. Another restaurant is vacant and made us nearly turn around thinking the Gem had already lost its luster. Upon entry you are greeted by a sparsely populated dining area with too few tables. The staff quickly moved tables to accommodate us via the saddest version of adult Tetris ever observed. But our party of six was seated immediately. That was the last bit of immediate anything. Three other parties arrived after we were seated, one left right away, the other two seated, but one of those also quickly left. Service was friendly but forgetful. Kitchen makes food to order, which is great, but the order took forever. About 20% of the items we ordered never came out. Of the six people my coffee was refilled once and no one else had the luxury of a refreshed glass of anything. Luckily we received a number of credits to our bill... for stuff we never received. The food that was received was tasty and fresh. Everyone enjoyed something they ordered. Hash and omelet stood out, sausage gravy with biscuits was forgettable. Biscuits in general were advertised as baked on site, but sure didn't taste like it. Poor balance between front of house staff and back of house make it tough to want to come back. As an aside, it was eventually obvious that another table of six was the owner's family. Hope they get it together as letting paying customers walk while tying up six precious seats of about 20 total is bad for business! read more

The food was great, but hard to enjoy when I'm blamed for the bad service. We came in for breakfast, and unfortunately, came through the door about the same time as a few other tables. The manager/owner?? Linda is the only person allowed to take orders. Other staff just stands around, handing out menus and filling drinks. Waited 15 minutes just to place the order. When we mentioned that we were ready for quite some time, Linda said it was because we came in with several other tables and she had to take their orders. Obviously flipping tables to make a profit isn't her priority. Similar issue when getting the check, only Linda can do that, so had to wait till she deemed us worthy of her attention. My dining experience at The Gem Eatery was amazing! Sam and I stopped by on a Saturday afternoon to try out the cinnamon rolls that all the Yelpers raved about. Upon inspection of the rest of the menu, we also decided to order an actual meal. Sam got the brisket sandwich, which was on the specials menu, and I got the Cuban sandwich. Both sandwiches came with fries. The service at The Gem Eatery is great. The waiter greeted us immediately when we walked in and he told us we could sit wherever. He brought our food out in a timely manner and checked on us several times. We also got to meet the chef who was super nice and gracious. Now to the food- The Cuban sandwich was AWESOME. Probably my favorite Cuban sandwich that I have eaten since being in South Florida. It had the perfect amount of shredded pork, really thickly cut ham, perfectly distributed pickles and delicious bread. Sam's brisket sandwich was super tasty. The meat was so tender! I was also surprised to find out that the bread was homemade! The fries were also delicious. They were thin cut fries that you couldn't help but shove in your mouth until they were all gone. As for what we originally came to The Gem Eatery for, the Cinnamon Roll!!! Sam and I ordered one to split for dessert. OH MY GOD. Could not rave more about that thing! Finally made it to The Gem Eatery! Based on the Yelp reviews and specific messages from other yelpers I had a feeling this place would be good. After finding The Gem Eatery inside a nondescript strip mall we walked in and I was pleasantly surprised. This place is super cute and we were greeted by the server immediately. So far so good! And then I saw the menu and was instantly disappointed. They serve breakfast all day and list some lunch options but nothing sounded particularly good or exciting. It mostly sounded like average diner food. I was tempted to get the Stuffed Pepper lunch special, but in the end selected a wrap with fish and opted for the chipotle mayo sauce (they have about 4 sauces to choose from) and I got settled in for an average meal. When our food came out I noted a) how big it was and b) once cut in half it still didn't look like anything special. Let me tell you - I WAS WRONG! This wrap was delicious! Everything inside complimented each other perfectly and that chipotle mayo was "lick the plate good"! Served with a side of healthy pita chips, this was an awesome meal! Jessica G. ordered a side of mac and cheese so I dug in as well (goodbye skinniness)...this was also delicious and worth all the bad calories. After reading such great reviews and drooling over so many pictures I decided to check out the Gem Eatery for breakfast one Friday morning. I had taken the day off and I wanted to try a new breakfast place and this was the first place that popped into my head. The name truly suits the place because it really is a hidden "gem" of a place. I would have never in a million years have found this place had it not been for Yelp. Its tucked way back in a strip plaza in an area I rarely if ever drive past. When we arrived we grabbed a table quickly and there aren't many tables so I understand why it can fill up fast. It was Friday after all so no big rush like they get on the weekends (we asked and the waitress said they usually have an hour wait on sat/sun). We got coffee and looked over the specials. I decided to go with one of the specials of the day, a BLT with scrambled egg and cheese served on a Kaiser roll and hash browns. I am not kidding when I say this sandwich was absolutely amazing!! The bread was soft and made there fresh, the eggs and bacon were overflowing. I LOVED IT! My friend got a basic breakfast, scrambled eggs, bacon, pancake and cheese grits. Now the breakfast part was good but let me tell you there was nothing basic about these cheese grits. THEY WERE OVER THE TOP DELICIOUS! No joke my friend has got me into grits lately I honestly never really ate them growing up but even she agreed that these were THE BEST cheese grits either of us had ever had. They were so creamy and cheesy that we decided to order a large side of grits to go to eat later LOL! Since we were there we HAD to get one of their famous giant cinnamon rolls. And wow was it huge and just like everything else we ate, it was delicious! We couldn't even make a dent in it (we tried our best) but it reheated nicely later at home so nothing went to waste. Our waitress was also super nice and kept our coffees cups full no matter how busy she got. I had this spot bookmarked for a long time before Elizabeth suggested we go try this out yesterday for lunch. I must admit that if it weren't for yelp there is no way we would've found this place. My first impression was that it was really weird looking. I'm sorry, but I don't think that this location was built for a sit down restaurant. This was literally the only negative thing about my experience. To be honest, appearances are just about the last important thing to me. I had the brisket sandwich. Even at the BBQ restaurants that I've tried, the brisket sandwiches haven't come close to touching this one. The brisket was juicy and tender. The sauce itself was incredibly tasty. The bread was definitely different, but maybe even the best part of the sandwich. I asked the owner what kind it was. (He was sitting right behind us) He told me that they make it from scratch! For dessert we split the cinnamon roll. It was one of the best things I've ever eaten! I literally couldn't stop eating until it was gone. It was like Jesus came down and baked this cinnamon bun to give us hope that heaven exists. If this is really what heaven is like, then I will never sin again. I really wanted to love this place, but the experience was just okay for me. Clyde, my cousin Gary, and I went there based on all the five star reviews on Yelp. They have a regular menu and a separate menu for that days specials. We ordered off of the special menu. I ordered grilled chicken which was lightly breaded. It came with a green salad with walnuts, watermelon, and feta with balsamic dressing. I liked the salad, but it overwhelmed the chicken. The dressing on the salad was a bit heavy. The watermelon added a nice flavor and the walnuts gave it crunch. The chicken was good and very tender. It had a light lemon butter sauce. Clyde and Gary each ordered the 11 oz. New York strip steak. It came with soup or salad and one side. They both got lentil soup, which they liked. Clyde really liked his steak. He said it was tasty with a nice glaze. He also had mashed potatoes. Gary cut into his steak and said there was gristle running through it. He tried it and said it was tough. Clyde tasted Gary's steak and agreed that it was chewy. We told our server and she took the steak to the kitchen. A few minutes later the owner came out and insisted both steaks were cut from the same piece of meat and they were both the same. Gary pointed out that his steak had a line of gristle running through it. The owner acted annoyed, but offered to replace his steak. Gary didn't want to take a chance on another steak so he asked for a hamburger instead. The hamburger came out in a few minutes. Gary wasn't happy with the hamburger either because it was rare and he had ordered medium. He didn't send it back or say anything to the owner. I felt bad since it was my idea to go there. When so many Yelpers like a restaurant it should be great. Clyde and I are going to go back. No, we're not bringing Gary. I'll update my review after we go. A real little GEM. Not fancy, not pretentious, just a small breakfast/lunch place in a very low traffic strip shopping center. It was depressing that so many of the other store fronts were empty, but The Gem had steady traffic. We were there two days after Hurricane Matthew passed us by. We heard one of the two servers telling some patrons that their deliveries were disrupted by the storm, and they were out of some items. Just like a well run small business, get up and running and do what you can, as soon as can. We ordered a regular breakfast, not their famous cinnamon bun, but it was well prepared and presented (even had a some plate decoration). The menu listed a one egg breakfast, and a two egg. I was a bit hungry and asked for three. Not a problem, and only $1.00 for the extra egg. This is a family run business, and I really like to support family businesses. Our server was an in-law of the family, and helped out on weekends. Hey, I did that for my wife's family business. I began my meal at the Gem Eatery with a delicious bowl of lentil soup. It was followed by a main course of New York Strip steak cooked perfectly medium. It was very tender. I had a side dish of creamy mashed potatoes--excellent. Everything was great. I enjoyed it immensely. I had a luke warm bud light to go with it (but the waitress warned me it wouldn't be cold.) The restaurant was decorated beautifully. The bathroom was immaculate. Parking was very easy. I enjoyed my dinner very much. The waitress was very helpful and friendly. Come here all the time and for some reason keep forgetting to check in. Loooove this place mostly because it reminds me of my mommas cooking that i dont get to eat anymore since she is in california. I usually go on weekdays since its less busy and seem to get better service that way, food is consistently great and dining areas and bathroom are always clean. Went in this morning and my fiances meal was forgotten then brought out well into everyone elses meals. We had to ask for the ketchup, syrup, and butter after our meals were delivered. We felt very rushed when asking questions or even wanting to ask about putting in a to-go order. Like i said i mostly go on weekdays so the rushed service could be a rare occurance but with the gem eatery gaining popularity on yelp more servers or kitchen assistance might be needed on the weekends. Went here recently with fellow yelpers Savanna and Jessica for a quick lunch. And by lunch I mean breakfast! First thing I noticed is that this place is in South Florida strip mall hell. From the outside, completely non-descript. Inside, it has the classic 'cozy upscale diner' feel. But also looked very clean and well taken care of. The seating was classic south florida diner style with tables and chairs, but with enough space between them that I didn't feel crowded (take note fellow giants!). We were greeted and taken care of promptly. There appeared to be only one staff member serving but we had no problem getting our orders in and he was knowledgeable and friendly. He recognized Jessica as a regular and let her know what she might be interested in. Very good staff! I was a little concerned because it was not super busy, which is not always a great sign, but I think in this case it's due more to the restaurant's location than anything else. As for food itself, wow! Just having breakfast available at lunch is already a big thumbs up from me. I took advantage of this and ordered the smothered french toast. It is a little more expensive (about 9 bucks), and I was a little disappointed when it first came out because it was a little smaller than I expected. Rookie mistake! That cream cheese/strawberry frosting was absolutely amazing, but also super filling. The portion size ended up being perfect. I was able to finish my last bite just as I was slipping into hyperglycemic shock. The actual french toast itself was light and fluffy, and the overall flavor was amazing! Top notch. A very fitting name for a great little place! A gem is exactly what this place is. I've been here on several occasions and the food keeps me coming back. Fresh made omelettes, fluffy pancakes, warm and toasty sandwiches and hot, strong coffee. The restaurant is a tiny hidden gem tucked away in a small shopping plaza. Not a huge place but very cozy. The staff is very warm and welcoming and are usually quick and very attentive. A few of the times that I've visited, the restaurant has been full and they only have one server on staff which backs up ordering and slows service a bit (that's my only reason for not leaving 5 stars). This is not enough to keep me from coming back! The food is fantastic! Their breakfast, lunch and dinner are all great. Fairly large portions at very reasonable prices. They use fresh ingredients and they put a lot of love into their food. The gem sandwich is my favorite. It comes with eggs, your choice of bacon or sausage, your choice of cheese and your choice of sauce between fresh baked bread placed in a sandwich press. It's not served with a side so you'd have to order grits or potatoes a la carte. The pancakes are heavenly. Thick, fluffy and delicious. Cooked to perfection. The one thing I have yet to try is their homemade cinnamon buns (which I hear is what they're famous for) I've seen several guests order them and they are gigantic with a nice helping of frosting for only $5. Great place when you're looking for breakfast as late as 3pm. It literally took a friend thinking about heading to the Emergency Room to find this place. If she was going to go to the ER and possibly have to be filled with drugs she wanted to have food in her system. Thankfully there was no need for the ER so we took out time to enjoy a super late breakfast. Very welcoming staff and surprising decor considering the area. When I walked in, never would I think this cute little spot was located in such an unremarkable strip mall/plaza. The Mrs took our order and the Mr made beautiful creations in the kitchen. The veggie wrap was awesome. I normally am born with vegetarian options outside of specialty cafes but this place hit the spot with it's huge wrap filled with well seasoned and extremely fresh veggies. Could only eat half. But still was able to step a few pieces of my friends strawberry filled french toast. We just stat around trying to figure out how we were gonna go a backward squat to getup and get out the door. While we built up our energy I decided to order the pumpkin pancake to go. It's freaking huge! Half dessert half breakfast the following day. I love this place and can't wait to come back. What a hidden gem! We were a party of six for a late breakfast on a Saturday. There are very limited tables but luckily the wait wasn't too long and we started off with two of their large cinnamon buns. Large like the size of your head and they were delicious! It was a perfect start for all of us. We mostly ordered eggs with various sides and it was all pretty good. Prices were decent and we left feeling full and satisfied. It is a casual place, not much in terms of decor or ambiance, but the food is good. The waitstaff is ok. They seem overwhelmed and scattered but very nice. Their menu is pretty extensive with both breakfast and lunch offered. Plenty of parking. The strip where they are located seems pretty sparse, but they seem to be doing well.
