I drove past The Gilbert House many times, not paying attention to the businesses along the road, focusing on my destination. It wasn't until one day in class that I mentioned my love for Sears Houses that I found out that The Gilbert House is in a Sears House! For those who don't know what a Sears House is... From 1908 to 1940 you could order your home from the Sears, Roebuck, and Company Modern Home Catalog. A few weeks later, all the house parts arrived by rail. They included 10,000 pieces of precut framing lumber, 20,000 cedar shakes, screws, nails, paint and the endless other parts needed to build a house, including the doors, the doorknobs and the drawer pulls for the kitchen cabinets. Following the included instructions, Sears guaranteed that you could finish your home in 90 days. Now I go to the spa next door every month, so one day I stopped by for breakfast. What a treat! I got the Hearty Scramble and it was delicious! I was stuffed but I kept seeing the Cinnamon Roll come out to other tables. So I got one to go! I feel in love! Invited by some friends to meet here and have breakfast...fell in love with this place! First, it's a great little venue place with a small chapel and outdoor area perfect for weddings or parties. We weren't sure when we first arrived whether there was a hostess or you just add your name and party size to the list sitting on a clipboard on the porch...turns out you add yourself. It's Fathers Day so the wait was expected but it really didn't take long to be seated. We sat inside the cute little house with wooden floors and many tables located in different rooms. We were seated by the kitchen, which I loved! So reminded me of the kitchen in my house growing up! I had eggs Benedict...loved the light, lemony tasting hollandaise sauce, eggs were poached to perfection. Toasty English muffin and Canadian bacon. Served with hash browns and I had to get a rhubarb muffin, which was so homemade and delicious! Just enough of tart rhubarb to make it perfect! We came with high expectations after reading all the reviews. The service was ok to begin with but we received no extra napkins, we were checked on once and our food was bland or incorrectly made. We asked for a drink to go. Our server said "don't worry I got it" she brought us a half full cup and a receipt for $5. When we went to ask why we were being charged we were told that they charge $1 for to go cups which is fine if we would have been made aware of it then they proceeded to say well wherever you go if you ask for a to go drink they just add it after. read more

Very nice breakfast spot. The restaurant is kinda cozy so be prepared to wait a bit. On the morning we went, we only waited 3 minutes but we were lucky and only a party of 2. We enjoyed breakfast and our mimosas. We were satisfied with our meals and the service was good. My husband did comment that he thought it was a lit bit pricey but I felt price was fair for quality of food. If you have a sweet tooth don't skip on getting a short stack to share. Met a buddy for breakfast today...when we realized The Groves next door changed their hours and weren't open....LUCKY us!!! Our server, Lizette, was fantastic!! Friendly, attentive, KIND! The food....NOM!! My buddy had a cinnamon roll, eggs, french toast and toast, LIKED it!! Not usually a breakfast person...nor a pancake person... Finally made it out to brunch!! Wait was around 10-15 minutes. Sign your name on the yellow pad and take a seat on the bench or porch. Since the weather is nice a table outside was most appropriate. Took a taste of the quiche (which was not as well seasoned but topped with bacon) with a salad tucked with strawberries, blackberry, grapes and pineapple; warm tuna melt on sourdough sandwich with fries; and buttery Apple pancakes. (I think this is an entry to making my own homemade Apple pancakes!!) The tuna melt melted in the mouth with the crispy toasted bread to catch the melt, while the apple pancakes was a nice sweet dish that was considered as my brunch dessert. Some of the employees were hanging out at a table near the door. There are multiple dining rooms that connect, because it is an old Craftsman house. There was a strong smell of paint or polish when I walled in. The restrooms are in a separate building out back. Their Wifi is called Magic Mike. I think the best word to describe our experience would be "underwhelming". From the minute we arrived, everything was a step (or two) below what I would have expected. First of all, when we walked up, there was no hostess / waitress / etc. There was a clipboard outside with a piece of paper sitting on a table that said "Sign In". Nothing else. My husband asked a bus boy if we were supposed to put our names on the sign in sheet, and the guy looked at him like he was an idiot. The bus boy told us to just wait, so we did. I finally walked inside and flagged down the hostess. She was very kind and got us a table immediately, once she knew we were there. Our waitress took our orders soon after we sat down. I got the eggs Benedict, and I requested that my hash browns be extra crispy. She told me, "They'll try, but our kitchen moves fast." ......okay then. Thanks for "trying". When she brought my food out, my hash browns were barely cooked. I mean, soggy and "crunchy", as in, undercooked and half raw. My husband, who LOVES hash browns, would only eat half of them before he had had enough. It felt like the cook was trying to spite me for having the audacity to ask for extra crispy hash browns. These were hands down the worst hash browns I've ever had. My eggs Benedict was redeeming - the hollandaise sauce was great, English muffin was soft but crispy on top, the poached eggs were perfect. My husband ordered biscuits and gravy, which were very tasty. We also got a cinnamon roll to split, but it was so sweet I quit after two bites. It was also not warm, which I expected it to be, especially since they put a huge scoop of butter on top. The butter didn't melt - it just sat on the plate like greasy decoration. My husband loves sweet treats so he thought it was good. All depends on your taste preference. Honestly, there are tons of way better breakfast places around that I'd rather go to before returning here. Some of the food was great, but the whole experience was a bit disappointing. Plus, I couldn't eat 1/3 of my meal, so it defeats the purpose of paying $10 for food I can get elsewhere at a similar quality and price point. read more

We used to live o Gilbert road and drove by the Gilbert house every day. We spent two years saying "we need to try that place." Today was finally the day that we made it and I'm regretting that it took us so long! The house itself is really fun and makes for a great setting for a meal. The rest of the property is fun to explore with other little shops to check out. I ordered the buffalo scramble and substituted a rhubarb muffin for toast. My wife ordered the healthy scramble. We also shared a caramel cinnamon roll. The caramel roll was the highlight for both of us. It was SUPER light so it wasn't filling and had the right amount of sweetness. Go check it out! read more

I ordered eggs Benedict and corned beef hash the eggs came out not cooks for human consumption. Not runny but raw my corned beef was cold and when I told the waiter, no apology just took my plate and my fork out of my hand (keeping me from eating my corned beef hash) and they sent another waitress to ask me what was wrong with my food again. First of all, I want to say the staff was very friendly and the old house is quaint and homey! They would get five stars for great service/location. The food, however, was not good. The breakfast sausage tasted like frozen, precooked links that were then reheated in the microwave. The gluten free pancakes need a massive rework, very grainy and not good (a box of Trader Joes GF pancake mix honestly taste better). The menu talked about the owner making from scratch food but there is no way that is the case. The food was also very expensive: 2 pancakes, scrambled eggs and 3 sausage links was $16 before tax/tip. My friend and I go out for breakfast once a month and like to try new places, but unfortunately we will not be returning due to the food quality. read more

Been here twice, the first time was good Awesome bacon pancakes. The service was a tad slow on the first visit but they were slammed. The second visit however was irrecoverable. We sat, we ordered, we watched another couple arrive. They ordered, got refills, they got food all the while we were completely ignored. My family and I were in Gilbert killing time and decided to grab a bite. We found this little gem and gave it a shot. The ambience is really cool, I live the old school little home you eat in. The staff was friendly and helpful. The 2 takeaways would be that the restrooms are in a separate building detached from the home so if you have to go, you walk out of the home and across the parking lot. Second, I ordered a stack of pancakes and added bacon and eggs. I never received my eggs and bacon and when the bill came I was charged for them. When I stopped the waitress to let her know, she rolled her eyes and said "oh you never got them, are you sure.?" Yes I'm sure!! She reluctantly grabbed the check and walked away, came back sat it on the table and walked away without even an I'm sorry. However, The food we did eat was very tasty. My husband and I have been regulars here for years and have always loved the service and food. We always recommend this please to friends and family. We had an unfortunate experience with the hostess the morning of December 9th which will now keep us from returning or continuing to recommend. We had been seated at an outside table and it was too cold in the wind for my 67 year old father. The hostess said smee would have to wait for inside seating which was fine. My father asked the hostess if she put our name back on the list and she replied with an attitude, 'that is not my responsibility, I don't know your name. ' My father was taken aback and asked her is she is wanting us to leave and she replied that would be his choice. I told him to let it go and at this point my husband was pissed how she spoke to him. Once seated I thanked the hostess; however, she turned to my father and said, 'I don't appreciate the way you talked to me and you were very rude. I'm a person too.' My father only asked if she put our name back on the list and asked if she wanted us to leave after she was incredibly rude to us. I told my dad to let it go and I bit my tongue as I just wanted to eat and leave at that point. I was going to ask our waitress the hostess' name and speak to the manager; however, they were very busy and the manager was as well. I let it go since we were all pretty upset. I work in customer service and I would never speak to a customer that way nor become combative with someone like she did. If she was my employee she would have been let go immediately. We will never go back after this experience and will absolutely spread the word about our experience. We have already started to. The hostess is your first impression and she was a very nasty person. read more

Breakfast with friends....also saw this place on PBS, so we were super curious about it. I am thrilled whenever I can get eggs benedict with actual Hollandaise and Canadian bacon. In AZ they think they can toss American cheese over ham and eggs and call it Eggs Benedict. I am not kidding, that was served to me at a place that remains unnamed...the eggs were slightly overcooked, I like the yolk sauce the way it is meant to be. Also the Hollandaise was light and not very flavorful,. but passable. We also had the steak and eggs and other breakfasts, all good. The famous cinnamon roll was really doughy and almost chewy. So we shared the better stuff and everyone left pretty happy. Not a bad experience at all, and the location and experience of being in that little farmland paradise can't be denied.
