From the moment we walked through the door the wait staff was attentive and helpful. My wife and I take my elderly parents out to new breakfast places every Thursday. Yesterday we went to Syrup & Salt on Southern & Gilbert in Mesa, AZ. Don't let the humble exterior fool you, this place is the real deal. First of all, and one of the best things, is that they are Halal. No pork, and all of their meat is ethically sourced. That means no hidden stock in sauces and no pork lard in the refried beans. We hit the jackpot, folks! I ordered the Chicken Florentine Crepes, 86 the chicken, with a side of Hollandaise sauce. My little had the Belgian waffle with fruit, and my beloved ordered the Chilaquiles. We also ordered a Banana French Toast to share. I'm a fan of the whole "Florentine" style of food. It usually means there will be spinach, mushrooms, some kind of sauce, and happiness. As a vegetarian, I tend to lean toward that item when I see it, and I always just remove the meat if there is any. So when I saw this on the menu, I leaned on it hard. I was debating about getting an egg sandwich, but decided I wanted to try their crepes. And goodness gracious, I'm glad I did. The crepes were like thin pancakes, perfectly prepared for my palate. There was also some kind of queso on top that substituted for the Hollandaise. I didn't even use any of the Hollandaise, and that NEVER happens! I was in disbelief as I ate each bite that the deliciousness could keep compounding in my mouth. As I gorged myself, I made sure to share with my beloved so she could understand why I was devouring my food like a tornado. My wife thoroughly enjoyed her Chilaquiles, and my little liked her waffle. She also seemed to be very engaged in the TVs on opposite walls playing movies. Kung Fu Panda was a little too distracting for my 7-year-old. I was stuffed. I couldn't eat another bite. I looked at my wife with my big sad eyes and confessed that we had over-ordered, since no one had touched the French toast yet. So I had a bite. Oh my! There was sweet, caramel, and the delicate fluffiness of the French toast. I mean, what was this? What heavenly concoction did the chef whip up and bless us with at our table? Two slices later, I had to shove it away because I was going to overeat. I took it to go and gave it to my brother later as I ranted and raved about how delish this place was. Tonight truly put a bad taste in my mouth and I'm not like this. I don't leave reviews like this, but I'm a frequent flyer. They know my face. I've eaten here and spent too much money here to be treated like this tonight was insane. I walk in. I'm not acknowledged, but let's start at the top. It takes me an hour to get to get here from my home.. but the food is good so I don't mind the drive. I always call in or I usually sit down..but today I was on hold for 30 minutes. He said he'll be back in 5 to take my order. Another reason not to dine here. I have never seen a business owner respond to a customer by essentially calling them a liar. The level of unprofessionalism is unbelievable. Apparently, next time I'll need to ask the server to stick her finger in the coffee so there can be "proof" that it was cold when it was served, or else it will be the customers fault lol. What I find most disappointing is that instead of simply acknowledging that a mistake occurred and taking accountability for your errors you chose to dispute my experience and attack my credibility. There is absolutely no reason for me to make up a story about receiving a cold cup of coffee. I have nothing against anyone there. People make mistakes. Own them and move on. (For my kosher Jewish friends, this could be a great place to eat!) The restaurant is very clean and spacious with a lot of tables. The food was truly good and very fresh. The eggs were fluffy, and the all-meat bacon was extremely crisp. The French toast was amazing, and I did get a cinnamon roll to go. It looks good as well. I had such a great experience at Syrup & Salt! It's such a cute, family-style spot with a warm and welcoming vibe. Even on Easter Sunday after church, it wasn't too crowded and we were able to get a table right away, which I really appreciated. Our server was amazing! very attentive, friendly, and he made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The service really elevated the whole experience. I ordered the lamb chops egg breakfast with hashbrowns, apple cinnamon pancakes, and chicken sausage, and my niece got the cookie butter waffle with a side of beef bacon. Everything was delicious! The lamb chops were especially tender and cooked really well. I do wish they had just a little more seasoning, but they were still very enjoyable overall. Also definitely get their flavored tea! I think that maybe on a less busy day our experience would have been better... we were told a 20-30 minute wait and ended up waiting an hour at least. I know new businesses can have some disorganization at first, so take this experience with a grain of salt. I will say, I was asked if I was done with one of my plates, and I said yes so she took it but then she went behind me and grabbed my other pancake and was gone before I could even say anything. Heard about this new halal restaurant and wanted to try it out. We came here on Sunday afternoon between lunch and dinner and there weren't too many people dining at that time. Our waiter seated us against the wall, which I like, and gave us our menus. I knew what I wanted since I had looked at the menu beforehand, but still went through it to make sure. We all got waters and put in our orders. I got their jalapeño burger with fries, and my companions ordered the buffalo chicken sandwich and the chicken mushroom crepes. Our food did take some time to come out but that's personally not an issue for me. My burger was a good size and had lots of jalapeños on it, hence the name. The peppers were spicy, too! I made use of the salt and ketchup at the table to add to my meal. I don't think I'd tried beef bacon before and it was good, smelled similar to the pork version and tasted fatty and flavorful. The fries were tasty as well, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I tried the chicken sandwich and crepe, the buffalo sauce was strong which I liked and the crepe was light. Oh my goodness! I've enjoyed breakfast here before but today was the first time I went for lunch. To say it exceeded expectations wouldn't even come close. It couldn't have been more perfect. If you don't know, halal is food permissible by Muslim law. it is kind of like the Muslim version of kosher. The dining room is bright with lots of tables and a view into the kitchen - - I always like that. On one wall is the whole explanation of what halal is. There are no cocktails here as alcohol is not halal. We ordered: *Smothered chicken breast with french fries and broccoli *Grilled salmon with mashed potatoes and asparagus *Lamb chops (4) with mashed potatoes and asparagus All females came with two big pieces of garlic bread. The smothered chicken was delicious - - a boneless chicken breast covered in peppers, onions, mushrooms and gravy and talk to Swiss cheese. The fries are nice and crispy and seasoned well. The salmon and lamb chops were also yummy. The lamb chops were tender enough that I was able to cut them with a better knife. The mashed potatoes were also good - - it looks like they might have been made from red potatoes but I'm not sure. Either way, they were really good. I really hope this place sticks around for a long time. We drove 40 minutes after a hike in Scottsdale just to try this place because it's one of the only spots I could find that serves beef bacon--and it did not disappoint. I no longer eat pork, and honestly, beef bacon is so much better anyway. I kept it simple with an egg plate, beef bacon, chicken sausage, and hash browns, and upgraded to the banana pancakes--which were absolutely divine. Everything was cooked perfectly. I can't say enough good things about this spot. It's rare to find a Halal breakfast place open all day that treats every dish with this much care. We started with the beef bacon, which was cooked to perfection--excellent flavor and texture. If you have a sweet tooth, the cookie butter pancakes are an absolute must; they were awesome. This was my 5th visit, and on 8/18 I waited over an hour to be serviced and over an hour just to place a to-go order. There was only one server working for more than 5 tables and I was also left on hold for over 20 minutes. Which I then placed a to go order online and still had to wait for the other to go orders to be placed ahead of me. I then had to go in store to place because it was "super busy". It's located in a small strip mall, but once you walk in it completely opens up--super clean, modern, and really welcoming. My husband got the cinnamon apple French toast. It usually comes with ice cream, but we swapped it for whipped cream and it was perfect. We visited Syrup & Salt for our monthly book club meeting. I had never heard of it, but another in our group said they had recently gone viral for their food and being a Halal restaurant. They do not take reservations or do call ahead seating, which I feel is a miss. Our friend who organized this month arrived early to ensure we had a table for 5 when others arrived. We were greeted quickly but that's where the service stopped. The rest of our time it seemed we were searching for our server, even after our plates had been cleared and we were ready to leave. They were busy, but also seemed to have plenty of staff so I'm not sure why service was so slow. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. I personally ordered the All In Breakfast that came with 2 eggs, hashbrowns, 2 bacon, 2 chicken sausage and 2 pancakes. Being a Halal restaurant means no pork and I was excited to try beef bacon, so ordered my meal Al bacon. It's super good! However unfortunately my food came out cold. I did not alert my server or ask for anything to be corrected. We had movie tickets for after brunch so just kept my plate as served. Idk that I would be back to Syrup & Salt. Tried Syrup & Salt this past weekend, got there right as they opened. Cute place in a strip mall place right off SE corner of Gilbert and Southern. The egg white omelette was good, they confirmed if I was good with Berries as that was the fruit option instead of potatoes (my request). I asked to try the crepes, really only wanted one but they did only charge me a smaller upgrade charge versus the full cost of the crepe dish and they gave me two crepes. The strawberries were great but something about the cream didn't work for me. I had the husband try it and he said it was fine. He had the chicken and waffle and like many an influencer has said (that is what brought us there), the chicken was a flattened chicken breast, tender but the breading did flake off a lot.
