Wow! I am in love! My friends and I had an amazing meal here this morning. The only problem was that it was hard to choose what to eat! Breakfast, lunch, and dinner foods were all available. My breakfast burrito was delicious, and my friends enjoyed their burrito, scramble, quesadilla, and crepe. The space is larger than I expected, with plenty of room, light, clean, and airy. The service was friendly and attentive. I am so excited about this coming to the South Bay! We need more vegan restaurants. It is so nice to eat out with lots of options. I can not rave enough about this place! All the other 5 star reviews got it right. I am vegan and I came here with my husband (vegetarian) and a friend (meat eater). I had the pozole which was delicious. It did taste more on the tomato-y side instead of a true pozole but since I love tomatoes I was happy with my meal. My husband ordered the mole wet burrito and he said it was the best mole he has had as well as the best wet burrito he has ever had. That is really saying something because he does not like vegan cheese and he ate every bit of the food, he may as well have licked the plate clean. My friend who does eat vegan/vegetarian when she is with us but does eat meat, ordered one of the savory crepes (I think it was the "chicken" one) and she said it was one of the best meals she has had. She also had a like a coco smoothie and I had an almond milk latte, both equally yummy. The menu is huuuuuge!!! And breakfast, lunch and dinner served all day!!! 10/10 would recommend!!! Fantastic!! Can't believe I've lived in Hermosa for a year & never tried this place! Menu has a huge number of items. I'll try to post photos of four items we had for lunch today: Molotes, Grain Salad (our favorite!), Grain Basic three with falafel, special grain, daily greens with tahini, a giant slice of mixed berry cake- all beautiful & delicious! So their food isn't that great but I have bought a few cakes from them in the past. They are pretty good and it's hard to find anything vegan in the South Bay. Today I placed an order around 2:30PM for a New Years Eve event. I specifically asked what time they closed. The man that was on the phone said 5PM. The grill just stops at 4:30. He said he needed me to pay half as a deposit to put the cake on hold. My husband paid for the whole thing. ($80 btw for 1 cake) We arrived at 4:35 to pick it up. They were CLOSED. No one was in there. Why would you say you close at 5, take my money and close early KNOWING I was coming? Not even a courtesy call. I will NEVER be coming here again. Not only is the food not up to par, the service is horrible and they clearly don' t care about their customers. I can only hope they will give us a refund after what they did. read more

The decor is fun and nice to sit and have a meal at the restaurant. It's comfortable and cozy. The waiters are pleasant and can answer all questions regarding the food or drinks.I had the falafel sandwich with a green drink. The other diners had pancakes. They stated the food was good. Here's where it all vegan, so my baby, my lil boy, my joy used to go to school at YAK Academy which basically shares a parking lot with Grain Cafe right. So one day I was hella early picking him up and my stomach was in knots. I mean if I'd had an X-ray done you'd see a pretzel. It was getting real - but for real - I always feel like Vegans be lying to themselves so when I saw the Grain Cafe was a vegan spot it became a showdown between Carl's Jr. or the Grain. I was sweating at this point - I've never been a Carl's Jr. type of chick. I'm not too vain - but I always look at how people look (health wise/shape etc) when I eat at certain places and when I saw someone walk in there, nah I just couldn't do it. So I went ahead and tried the Grain. Mannnnn I sat in the car and smacked for bout a good hour with the lil homey (my Son) cause he was done with preschool by the time my food was ready. We smashed the Sautéed Kale dish - double sweet potatoes no fake protein (I need more time, I can't do the fake meat on the first date). I also got the wet burrito. Lawddd, that shit smacked so hard I went to Ralph's and tried to buy all the ingredients and recreate it at home. I failed cause I'm still a lil immature - when I saw the Daiya cheese in the pack I got kinda turned off. So I just keep coming back to the Grain Cafe and let them make it for me cause it's really real. I mean really real. If all vegan food taste as good as this I could definitely make this a permanent lifestyle choice. They need to do meal prep or something cause it's really like that. read more

The chilaquiles were phenomenal, went by this morning for a quick eat and was served authentic Mexican food but vegan style. You bet I will go back. I went with a group... I was craving avocado toast (not on the menu), so I figured I could hack my own by ordering toast, avocado and tempeh bacon. This seemed like it would be the simplest order, but yet, everyone in my party received their food and nothing came out for me (including the kombucha I ordered, which was literally sitting in the case a few feet away). We asked for my kombucha several times (finally came after the 3rd ask)... and then the waiter let me know that he forgot to ask me what kind of toast, which is why I hadn't received any of the items. This made no sense as they didn't assemble the avocado toast for me... I finally got 3 plates, one each with some slices of avocado, one with two slices of toast, and one with tempeh bacon (which wasn't crispy). It was fine, but not exceptional... and while I got my toast comped (the cheapest item of those I ordered), I just don't understand why I didn't get my drink when the others did, or why my other items didn't come out minus the toast. Waffles are supposed to be a bit crispy.. if it would've had more texture I think it would've been fine. They also forgot to give us syrup and had to flag the waitress down to get her attention. It's a cool vegan based food spot that has many different options. Big brother turned us on to them as he loves their pastries and deserts. We had a wide assortment of different plates including cheese pizza, Tuna sandwich, tacos plate and nachos. I'm a carnivore and I didn't mind not eating meat this night as all the food was pretty good! They had many interesting smoothie and juice options. Tried a banana based smoothie. Yum! I ordered the curry chicken salad, it was delicious! My little companion had his first vegan pizza and he approved; he gave 3 out of 5 stars because he's not familiar with the taste of vegan cheese. The serving size could be a little bit bigger and the dishes take a little bit longer than other places, I guess because everything has to be made from scratch. The service was good and friendly. I've been going to The Grain Café for a few months now. I usually love my orders, today was different. I ordered the Deluxe Burger with a gluten free bun. I've ordered this the last several times for $15.28 including tax (13.95 + 1.33 tax). Today it was $17.47! I couldn't believe how expensive it was!! (I even substituted tempeh bacon for mushrooms) - to add tempeh bacon it cost $3. My gluten free bun should've been an even substitution at least! Now all of a sudden without updating their menu to reflect that gluten free buns cost an additional $2, I'm paying an extra $2.19 when a gluten free bun substitution has always been included. I'm fine if they want to charge more - understand completely. Yet to not be forthcoming with the change in policy or price isn't good. I feel like I was being overcharged - not a nice feeling. I'm going to Natural World Market & Cafe on Artesia Blvd in Redondo Beach to get their Superfood Vegan Burger w/ gluten free bun for $15.60 (much more reasonable) from now on. At least Natural World Market & Cafe advertises the additional charge so I know what I'm getting. I'm vegan, gluten free, and soy free. It's hard to find a place that has anything suitable for me. I loved The Grain Cafe. When I called to ask about the price they told me it was because of the gluten free bun but showed nothing to reflect that...very misleading and disappointing. If you want to visit them just make sure to clear the price when ordering so you don't have an over charging incident like me. Without notification or as advertised pricing this is overcharging - a big deal. P.S. They got my order wrong as well. I asked for roasted sweet potatoes not roasted potatoes. Just a nice cherry on top of not being informed of their change in policy. This place has become my boyfriend and my FAVORITE spot, and he's not even remotely vegan so that says a lot. The burritos here are incredible, honestly they beat any burrito anywhere else whether you like meat or not. As someone who tries to eat primarily vegan/dairy free, the OPTIONS on their menu are endless! I was so excited when we found it that I thought it was too good to be true -- a vegan Reuben!??? No way. On top of the awesome food, Justin who typically takes our order has such a great attitude! Had a great dinner with my family visiting from the UK. The staff are very attentive and will answer any questions. Only con I could say that despite not being very busy at the the time we arrived. The orders did take an unusually long time to prepare and on occasion they did forget an item. But were gracious enough to remedy the situation. Good quality wad excellent. I was not really in a mood to cook last night and decided to see if they were open as many places are closed due to the on going pandemic. Initially I tried to phone in my order both to see if they were open and to order ahead since it looks like the online ordering was not set up for the Redondo location. I was getting a busy signal so I figured people were trying to phone in an order, I was 5 minutes away so I decided to head down and saw that they indeed were open. The staff had the restaurant laid out with markers on the floor to aid with social distancing. Tables were also blocked off as per the newest CA Government recommendation for the second in dining closure to slow the spread of COVID-19. Masks are required. The front of house staff was welcoming and the kitchen staff did seem like they were busy fulfilling phone orders. Since a lot of people were ordering by phone, the restaurant was empty. I placed my order, was told it would be about 15 minutes so I went back to my car to wait it out. I saw a steady stream of people walking in and walking out with takeout orders. It was never crowded so it felt completely safe as everyone coming and going were wearing masks and were not in the place for more than 30 seconds. When 15 minutes was up, I looked up from my phone and saw the host wave to me to signal my food was ready. I hopped out of my car and he met me half way. I don't live far so it was still warm when I got home. I was too hungry to take a picture of the food so, sorry no pics for this review lol. But I can tell you that the sausage pizza with the vegan sausage and smoked tempeh was perfect. Fair warning, they use diaya cheese, I know a lot of people don't like diaya so just a heads up if you are not a fan of that brand. The grain cafe is a welcomed addition to the south bay as the number of vegan options are a bit lacking in the south bay compared to other areas. They are right next to happy veggie, another favorite vegan spot of mine. The Grain Cafe is focused more on American, Pizza and South of the border cuisine, where as Happy veggie next door is Asian cuisine, specifically Vietnamese inspired dishes.
