Upon our arrival in town, my husband and I were craving something healthy after indulging in pre-packaged plane food and before embarking on a gnarly hike the following day. My husband requested "something healthy" so I did a quick search and found The Greenery Cafe, which looked great. Nestled behind a house on the street, there is a small standalone building which looks like somebody's back patio and garage. We ordered through the screen door and meandered out to the backyard area where there are some tables and chairs set up on the grass. The food takes a little time because it's all made fresh - you can hear them preparing it through the side window while you wait outside. But oh man, was it worth the wait. My BBQ chicken & hummus wrap was delicious. I wouldn't think to put BBQ and hummus together, but it just works. Complete with quinoa and tons of veggies, it was super hearty and filling. The tortilla chips served on the side had a lime-y taste which were also tasty. My husband really enjoyed his Mahi Mahi wrap, also. The fish looked, tasted and smelled fresh, and similar to my wrap came loaded with veggies and a side of chips. Both wraps were very high in protein and healthy carbs, perfect for a hike the following morning. If you're like us and it's your first stop after landing, you'll instantly feel welcomed and relaxed by the low key vibe of the greenery, sunshine, and casual dining area outside that feels like you're in someone's backyard (well, you kinda are). You'll probably even see several lizards dart around during your visit. I got the vegetarian hummus & black eyed pea wrap, and it was dancing with flavor! On our way to the airport, we stopped here for lunch. Thank you Yelpers for turning us onto this place, for we never would have found this side-street spot otherwise. We went to the walk-up door to order, and I got their fish special with three sides, and my wife got a soup. Everything was delish, and the casual outdoor atmosphere was a perfect way to end our vacation. We got lucky to have gotten there between rushes, and our food came out quickly. But, as it is a small kitchen, if a bunch of people show up to order just before you do, you can probably expect a 20-30 minute wait (as we heard them say to one person while we were eating our lunch). read more

Cute spot in Lihue! Also not far from airport so if you are hungry when you land or leaving this would be a good option. Parking was tight here but we found a place on the side of the house. Service was great and they were very knowledgeable about the menu and health benefits. Everything here is mostly healthy I would think most people following a healthy diet could find something they would enjoy here!! I had the fresh mahi, collard greens, kale salad, and yams. Wow the fish was so fresh and those collard greens honestly tasted almost as good as back home (I'm from the south so we know our collards;) anyways my bf has the bbq chicken and that was also wonderful. I tried some of their fresh unsweetened herbal tea and it was so refreshing! Also it seemed it was cooked to order so it did take about 15 minutes for the food to arrive. Nice little hole-in-the-wall place, behind a house. The avocado sandwich was good, and the bean soup side as well (though as a side, the soup was very small). I ordered the "rice pudding", which was actually a warm rice soup with taro and banana. It was interesting, but definitely not a pudding. Not sure how long this place has been open but I never knew this place existed until I happen to see them searching for a place to eat lunch. If it was not for Yelp I would never even have driven by this place because it's on an unknown street and it's basically a converted house with tables and chairs outside. Sounds like my kind of place. First off parking is tight as there are only a few spots but good news is you are on Kauai so there are no parking rules so I just parked behind the owners car since I figured he would be cooking and not need to leave ha ha. The frontage sign leads you to the back where this house is located. I picked this place because they say it's veggie friendly and reading over the menu there were indeed a lot of options. They had a handful of salads, wraps and sandwiches. They also had non veggie items such as chicken and fish. Now what was a bit strange was their meat plates come with three sides which are all vegetarian. All of these side dishes looked great--things like collard greens, kimchi, brown rice, sweet potato and purple potato salad. But if you want to order vegetarian they have no plate and you have to order the sides separately for $4.50 each. That seemed a bit excessive. They do have other veggie items like an avocado wrap, hummus and black eyed pea wrap that looks good but I decided to get the Hummus salad which came both kale and regular lettuce, a brown rice quinoa blend, and house made hummus. I also got one side of Purple potato salad as it sounded Hawaiian. Food was good and tasty but I wasn't sure I'm a fan of eating rice and quinoa with salad. I kind of ended up not eating much of the rice. The potato salad was great and I normally don't eat such a thing because very few restaurants made a vegan version so I was a happy camper. Two other points to mention. The service here is really slow. In fact it took about 15 minutes to even get anyone to come to the counter. They said hi and all but that they would be there soon. I also noticed they seem to get mostly to go orders as I saw a bunch of people picking them up. So basically while they are making these orders you need to wait until they are done before you can even order. The other issue here is if you eat at this place don't think it's going to be in a relaxing garden atmosphere. Instead you will need to realize you will be instead having a war with the files here, and the flys on Kauai are fierce and they even like vegan stuff. So to put it politely, I suggest you avoid this jungle backyard and take your items to the beach or anywhere else for that matter. Other than these slight negatives this place is worth checking out if you want healthy food while you are near the airport and want something tasty to go. read more

This cafe serving healthy soul food is literally in a backyard so I was thrown off at first when my GPS directed me here, but I should've known better with this being Hawaii and all. You order/pay at a window and then they bring your meal out to you. I got the FISH PLATE which comes with three sides. I chose the purple potato salad, collard greens and kale salad. The fish is locally caught, marinated and pan fried. It and the sides were excellent. Definitely the healthiest plate lunch, or meal for that matter, I had on my entire trip. read more

I'm here on the island of Kauai for business this week. I've been lucky enough to be given the opportunity to enjoy the diverse food offerings they have here while conducting business. It's my lunch break as I have an hour. So of course I decide to turn to Yelp to find a spot to grind. Up comes The Greens Cafe, within 3 minutes of my current location. On my way I go! Not your typical health food craze restaurant. The Greenery cafe surely knows how to whip up some delicious home cooked meals! When I say home cooked meals, I mean it literally. If it wasn't for a colleague to mention that this restaurant was in a residential area, I may not have found it. I posted pictures of the front of restaurant because this cafe is literally a hidden gem. Once you find parking, you head towards the back where the cafe is. There are outdoor seatings which are for groups of 4. I'm pretty sure it can be arranged to the party needs. There are a few tables that are located closer to the front of the cafe that seat couples comfortably. This place has some awesome choices that are healthy and better for you. It's a great treat when you want something that tastes good, but won't tip the scale. They use Organic items and fresh vegetables. They serve wraps that are stuffed pack with designated filings based on your selection. They even do smoothies and juices that are blended with specific ingredients to fulfill anyone's appetite. As I perused the menu, I saw that they had an Organic Barbecue Chicken and Hummus wrap. This sounded delicious and after a bite, I can tell you it tasted just as delicious as it sounded. The wrap that I was presented with was huge. I ate half and a few bites into the other half. If you truly know me, you know I can eat. So being that I couldn't finish my wrap means that it was gigantic! My wrap came with some tortilla chips. Do t know the brand but they were tasty and seasoned as well as a tortilla chip should be. I also got the Watermelon juice. I was in the mood for something refreshing and tasty. So of course it was watermelon on my mind. Thankfully I got a discount on my juice which was super cool. It tasted great at a even greater value ;). Overall, a great place to dine. I look forward to trying another item from the menu. Just remember that this is organic and fresh products. So be sure to time yourself and if you're in a rush, call in your order in advance. They'll even accommodate dine in call ins, so it's ready when you are. If you're planning on dining in, expect a wait if there's a line. The scenery is so beautiful and serene that the wait won't seem so long. Honestly, the products that come out are tasty and fresh. I prefer to eat animal protein rarely for health reasons. This was the BEST, most satisfying and nutritious meal I had while in Lihue. At most restaurants here, I had to compromise my health or eat meals with the protein removed - and replaced with nothing. Not here, I got a delicious wrap with hummus and black-eyed peas and there were several items on the menu that looked delicious and healthy. My dad was able to get a fantastic-looking salad with Mahi. Situated in a back yard the food made me feel cared for. Like a good friend was having me to lunch and nourishing me with authentic and healing food. And tasty too.
