Pretty sure this place is most popular for their steak items, but I got the Seared Ahi Tuna salad and enjoyed it. The tuna came in a generous amount and was good quality (perfectly seared, and wasn't fishy), and the house made miso dressing on the side was sweet, tangy and creamy. I didn't throw the dressing on the salad, but it was good to dip in. My favorite part of the salad was the variety in vegetables: mixed greens, cucumber, grilled veggies, and kabocha squash (super sweet & creamy, yum!) The meal left me feeling satisfied and balanced. I heard that it is named after a health inspector from the owners' Chula Vista location, who had this dish when it was served over rice before it became a sandwich. A tasty Steve Sandwich with a bit of a kick, but you can request a non-spicy version if you prefer the heat dialed down. The alpha meal salad is delicious! The jalapeño salad dressing pairs well with all the ingredients in the salad. I leave a 3 stars because these workers here are rude sometimes and the cook has a lot of attitude. One day I had order online and I added on their to cook the steak medium well. Upon receiving it the steak was rare. I told the cashier he told the cook and the cook told him with an attitude why didn't you tell me I do not read the notes. The steak sandwich is huge and the chicken bowl is pretty healthy and filling. However, they are always out of many items on the menu. It's a bit of a let down considering that their menu is a good size. They also take a very long time to prepare your order. There is a sign that everything is made to order, which is understandable, but their wait times are a bit much. I was working in the area and called in an order 30 min before my lunch. I still had to wait an additional 15 minutes when I got there for my order to be ready, which ate up half my lunch. I was able to call in 15 minutes prior to opening to place an order for my coworkers and I, which was a huge plus since we only get 30 minute lunches. It was ready for pick up once they opened at 11. Their menu isn't that huge but it's decent. They have appetizers (wings, tapas, ceviche), sandwiches, salads, and bowls/bento boxes. I like how they add a small clock next to menu items that take some time to make. It's great for people who have short lunch breaks. I ordered the Steve's sandwich: thinly sliced beef with a peruvian chimichuri sauce on a torta. The sauce is usually made spicy but they were kind enough to make my sandwich non-spicy. They were really generous with the amount of beef in the sandwich and I loved that the bread was soft but also had a nice crisp. Definitely would recommend! It does come with a side of either fries or a salad. I've also tried their BBQ pork banh mi which was good but pricey. You could get the same sandwich elsewhere for about half the price. It kinda pains me to drop a 1 star on this place.. but it's justified. I ate here in the opening week and, to be expected, they had a few hiccups. They were still getting in the groove of things, but the place was pretty empty, so we expected a decent turnaround time for food. We placed our order (we all went with the steak sandwich and fries). This took about 30 minutes to prepare, and came out to us in a to-go box. Strange, but no biggie, we didn't ask for it to-go, so we just grabbed our napkins/utensils and enjoyed our VERY tasty chimichurri sandwiches. That was a few months back, I didn't leave a review then as I thought it would be unfair. I ate their today and.. unfortunately.. things have degraded. Today the restaurant was quite busy, with only 3 tables left inside when we showed up at 11:45. We couldn't place our order immediately because someone was placing an order over the phone. After this, 3 of us were asked what our orders would be before we paid - thought that was odd.. but I realized this was to speed up the whole process. I placed my order, paid.. my coworker did the same, and then a 3rd person followed suit. We grabbed a table and waited. The phone seemed to ring off the hook, more and more phone orders, the line quickly grew to the door, no tables were left, but I noticed barely anyone in the restaurant was actually.. eating. Time ticked on, numerous people were coming in, getting food, leaving, this went on for 45 minutes. Because of the strange way we placed our orders, the person behind my coworker and I got their food first (which was for a party of 3 people), then my coworker.. then someone else, and finally me. The food was fresh, can't knock that.. and it's tasty, but it's not worth the wait. I feel like the to-go system is exploited, and these customers are prioritized, while customers who are actually visiting your establishment are forgotten. An observation I made while waiting for my food; the girl behind the register was making, what looked like, 4 Thai teas.. I assumed this was for an order. There were 4 cups filled with condensed milk, tea was steeping in individual metal containers over each cup. 30 minutes later she added more hot water to the steeping cups.. and 30 minutes after that she added milk to make one for a customer. Finally, she put the remaining teas in the fridge. I'm not in the restaurant industry.. but surely you can do this a lot faster by prepping a large batch of tea and a large batch of sweetener.. and simply combine them when ordered, rather than leave 4 random teas on the counter for an hour until a customer orders one. This type of issue might explain why it takes so long to prep food.. for example.. the steak sandwich I ordered is meat, bread, fries. Fries take 5-10 minutes, bread is sliced and thrown on the grill while the steak cooks, and the steak may take 10 minutes. Since the fries, steak, and bread are cooking at the same time, you're done in 10 minutes, plated and served in 15. Also.. why put all food in styrofoam to-go boxes? If you're dead set on serving all food this way , at least use a recyclable material. read more

Called in over the phone to order and there are 3 issues to why I give this place a 1 star (Lesser if I could). 1) Upon arrival i introduced myself and told them i was there to pick up 3 orders, then I proceeded to pay and as I was paying the young male cashier in a hat with blonde hair took my card and selected 20% tip for the store. I then took my time to see if I can do skip or no tip as I was picking up the food and I am not obligated to tip as well. I had to select 15% as there was no option to skip a tip. But the fact that he selected for themselves and the store is total bamboozlement and a dishonesty! 2) I had to wait 20 minutes when I had called in an order when I was told it would be ready in 15. Took 40 minutes of my lunch hour additionally to wait. 3) The portions for the Salmon is really tiny (1 oz look) and the rice is very much little. Was excited to find a new place opening in poway. They only open for lunch time but by noon they already ran out of like half their menu items. It's a bit ridiculous. I wanted to try the bulgogi plate but that was out, so I settled on the banh mi. The banh mi had a good amount of pork in it but it was a bit too salty. I also wish they'd include more stuff in their sandwich. The price is a bit steep at 7.50 for just meat and bread. Bale in mira mesa has way better banh mi for half the price. Rather disappointing but hoping they'll get it figured out. It's in my opinion a tad pricey for what they offer. read more

Came in today after a manicure to grab lunch with my boyfriend and we were immediately greeted once we walked in the door. The lady at the register was extremely nice and made suggestions since it was our first time there. She highly recommended the Steve Sandwich, which we both got. It also came with a choice of salad or fries. The bread for the Steve Sandwich was amazing. It was warm and toasty but definitely not dry and/or chewy. The prime beef and sauce probably helped with that. All in all, the service and food was amazing. I work nearby and come here fairly regularly, and the food has always been AWESOME! I often crave their Japanese Ceviche w/ Rice (and some teriyaki sauce on the side). The fish is very good quality, not stanky or chewy, which is really really important to me. To top it all off, even though their cashiers change often, they're always incredibly friendly and are quick to know that it's me when I call in my order :) The only thing is that they make your food when you order it, so it can take a little while. This place is simply one of if not the best spots I've found in a ten minute drive of my workplace. I love the salmon bento and the mekishiko tapas. The steve is also a really great steak sandwich if you don't mind it a little spicy~. The beef bento is also great. They're always well cooked and everything tastes fresh. The only bad thing is sometimes the wait is a bit long if you don't call ahead and they do run out of things. Especially if businesses decide to have group lunches down there. (But that's part of why it's fresh when you do get it!) I saw a few low reviews below at least one of which was listed on what I believe was the same day my office had one scheduled. I do have one complaint - The front wait staff is always so slow and she seems a bit lost. I ordered take out and picked it up 20 minutes after I called. I found this place randomly looking for new lunch spots by my work. I am completely blown away by the food here. The quality of the food for the price point is incredible. I've been here twice. The first time I ordered a Teriyaki burger which ended up being a giant, gourmet burger for like 8$ and change. The second time (which is right now), I ordered the steak sandwich. The second I started eating I knew I had to leave a review. It's quite possibly the best steak sandwich I've ever had, including those I've had in the Midwest and on the East Coast. It is cooked perfectly and has a simply fantastic flavor profile. It was also under 10$. The service is great too. The owner is kind and considering the quality of the food, it comes out pretty quick. I'm giving this spot a 5 star review and would highly recommend it to anyone looking to grab lunch or a weekday dinner. I will be returning frequently. read more

The Grillery is a misnomer. I almost didn't go in when I noticed it had reopened under this name. I've worked in this area for years and this site has had many eateries. The last few were a Chicago hot dog place and and barbecue joint. Thumbs down on both. I figured this was another attempt at one or the other. I am happy to say, so far, I give this place two snaps and shoulder turn. Whatever that means! This Asian Fusion lunch haven might be my new go to place. I had the grilled salmon bento and the Japanese tuna ceviche. Pros: FRESH fish. The salmon with it's crispy skin was so delish and their menu notes that they buy the fish whole and filet it themselves so the fish stays fresh. I totally dig it. The fish portion was huge. The bento came with rice, grilled veggies (is that asparagus I see!), a small salad and two potstickers. The citrus dressing was good and the other sauce, not teri or gyoza sauce but somewhere in between, was light and flavorful. The ceviche was full of tuna, crunchy english or peruvian cucumbers, white onion strips, cilantro and a spicy citrus sauce. Maybe a tad too spicy for me (what?) but still really good. They also had iced water that I believe was flavored with cucumber and cups on the side counter so you don't have to feel guilty asking for water instead of buying a drink. Great touch! Kendall is manning the counter by herself but she took the time to explain things to me and was extremely friendly and helpful. Cons: For me the bento skimped too much on the sides. Very small amount of rice, salad (just lettuce) and veggies for my taste but I doubt most people would be complaining. Also they ran out of a few items today. Namely the bulgogi and the bbq pork. I think they better start stocking up because the lines are only going to get longer. I didn't get to meet the owner but I have a feeling he is the chef and he looked pretty busy. Plus I didn't try the food until I got back to my office. Sorry those are the only things I could come up with. I'll be back to try the banh mi and the bulgogi. I plan to be a regular since it feels like a healthy option whether it is or not. This is my first time here, I saw the sign outside for a steak sandwich with fries and decided to get it. I will say this is the best steak sandwich I have ever had. This is a wonderful lunch spot but be wary if they're busy. The first time I came here with my husband and it was pretty much dead. I got the ceviche and he got the ahi salad. I was so happy with my ceviche: it's raw ahi tuna with cucumber, cilantro and onion in some kind of magical sauce over white rice. It's probably one of my favorite things in the world right now. My husband's salad was also great. A few days later, I had a craving for the ceviche again. But this time, things were different. They were slammed, and I waited about 25 mins of my 30 min lunch break to get my food. Looking back, I should have called my order in, but you live and you learn. When I got my food and took it back to my desk to eat it while I worked, I noticed that the same quality I received the time before was nowhere in sight. The cubes of tuna and cucumber were pretty much a massacre of Jack the Ripper-like proportions. I asked for no onions this time, and it seems like they gave me less of everything (the cup it comes in was about 3/4 full, where the previous time was full to the top). It tasted great, don't get me wrong, but it was very disappointing to say the least.
