Worst. Birthday. Dinner. EVER! I was so excited to eat at this restaurant. I even chose it for my birthday dinner. Bad choice, and I would not go back. I went on a Monday night & arrived with a little more than an hour until I needed to leave and go to my Ghost Walking tour downtown, which was a 15 minute drive away. Since it was a Monday, I figured that was more than enough time. There were two tables seated outside. I was the only table in the downstairs dining room. And there were a lot of staff. I have no idea why service was so slow! The outside is very cute. There is a huge Grizzly Bear head over the entrance & the inside is gorgeous beams and dark wood. Great ambiance with the potential to be a wonderful place to eat. I sat on the first flood downstairs in a booth at the back. I could see the kitchen from my seat. The staff was friendly and there was a hostess. My server was Erika. It took a few minutes for her to come over. I saw at least four servers moving around the dining room and not in a panic or rush. I ordered a drink. It was some kind of tropical something. Took forever to come out & no alcohol. I could taste none. I knew what I wanted to eat in advance what with having to be careful about gluten, so I ordered my food when I placed the drink order. The waitress was concerned about the pecan coating on the shrimp for my Surf and Turf order. She went to check with the kitchen to see if it was gluten-free and it wasn't (I was hoping it was just pecans). I was relieved to see she was careful about the gluten. So I had to get plain grilled shrimp. A bit disappointing, but no biggie. I kept waiting & watching the time tick by. Finally, I saw some food come up in the kitchen window. I did see a plate with a steak and thought, "Oh that must be my dinner." I kept waiting for someone to go over and grab it, but looked at my phone when it came up and it sat in the window for NINE minutes with servers walking past. I almost asked the hostess if that was my food. More food came out bit by bit and the servers started running it up that huge staircase. We're not talking about 20 plates or anything. There may have been a group of 10 -12 max by my estimation. After 45 minutes & being in the restaurant over an hour, I called my server over and said I had to leave in 6 minutes to catch my tour. After missing my trolley tour by 4 minutes, I was panicked to be at this tour on time. She went over to check and said it would be out in 3 minutes. It was almost 7:40 PM by now, and I was starving. I told her it was ridiculous that grilled shrimp and a medium rare steak wasn't out in 45 minutes in a restaurant that was mostly empty. She tried to make the excuse there was a large party upstairs. I was a server for more than a decade. One party of 10 doesn't put a kitchen behind like that. She even said, "Yes, I thought 45 minutes was a long time." That made me angrier. Well, if you thought there was a problem, why didn't you check on it? Or check on me? She hadn't been back once in all that time. I had ordered another drink from someone else, but it still wasn't there. The food did come out about 3 minutes later & there were LITERALLY 3 shrimp on the plate. You can see in the picture. The steak was seasoned well but not a great cut of meat. Tough in some places. And they had just started making this. The asparagus wasn't good. No flavour, not done. Three of the potatoes were still raw. I gulped down as much as I could in the few minutes I had. Finally the 2nd drink came out & I told her to give it to someone else. I had no time to drink it & wasn't going to chug it on a still mostly empty stomach & drive. There seemed to be very little common sense in the way things ran at this place. Know what they did to 'fix' it? Took the drink I had no time to consume off the bill & the first with no alcohol. Not what anyone wants for a birthday dinner. Overlooked spot to eat while I was a Queen's student. I graduated around 10 years ago and only ate at the Grizzly Grill once, which was a fluke. The prices are more expensive compared to other restaurants on Princess, but for good reason. The food is Amazing. The staff will take care of you (that was Sara for us, the one who just started a few nights ago, the one from Alberta, I think -- please keep her on the earlier dining shift, always. I predict she'll get more glowing reviews and up your restaurants' reputation online/overall if you keep her on the earlier shift ). My partner and I came up to visit Kingston just for the day to reminisce our separate times at Queen's. We stumbled into deciding to eat here after Grecco's wait was too long, and discovering that Mino's wasn't offering dine-in options except for Fridays and Saturdays (we came to visit on a Thursday). Anyway, I'm so happy Grizzly Grill had no wait and seated us right away. The Carving Platter for 1 was way more food than two people could eat and finish. It was mouth wateringly delicious and a great way to sample many of the items on their menu. The only thing I didn't like (there was two): 1) The prime rib portion was served as shavings. It just tastes like tasty stir-fried beef (no offense). Perhaps changing the description to "Prime Beef shavings" would be a more accurate description. 2) The spice that was on everything, ended up being on the fries, chicken wings and dry-rub ribs was unexpectedly spicy. It had heat that I didn't enjoy since I was not expecting it. I suspect that it was from the dry-rub that made things gently, but surely fiery, that I did not like. Much too much dry rub and it was way too salty for my liking. EVERYTHING ELSE WAS AMAZING. THE P.E.I. MUSSELS. We did not originally plan on dining here for dinner however we were left with very few options as they were the only restaurant open that evening. The food and service that night was impeccable. Our server was very patient and understanding when it came to our orders and our meal was very much worth the price! I ordered the full rack of grilled baby back ribs which came with a side of fries and coleslaw. My boyfriend ordered the enright ribeye which came with fries, horseradish aioli, and a skillet of brussels sprouts. While we waited for our dishes to arrive, they gave us a plate of bread with butter. They offered regular butter as well as a sweet butter seasoned with black pepper and other spices. It tasted amazing... I never knew butter could taste so good. We were quite impressed with the portions when the dishes arrived. My ribs were sweet and sticky. It was also really juicy and tender. The steak was cooked beautifully and was quite tender as well. The fatty streaks gave the steak a melt-in-your-mouth experience. I was most Impressed by how aromatic and savoury the Brussels sprouts were. I could not get enough of all the Parmesan cheese covering the dish. My girlfriend, her mum and I decided to hit the Grizzly Grill to watch the Raptors Game 5. The vibe in there is really cool, everyone was super fired up and the game was sick. (Unfortunately we lost by 1 point). The food was great, we started with the turkey wings, which were big and super crispy, but the sauce was very mediocre. Like any bottled bbq sauce you can buy at the grocery store. My girlfriend had the ribeye and fries. Fries were AMAZING, especially with the garlic aioli but the steak was a little over cooked. The Brussels sprout skillet was unreal though. The smoked duck pizza was awesome. Wonderful crust, nice amount of cheese. Could have used more duck but the drizzle of maple syrup was good. I got the charcuterie board. I wanna say something right off the bat, quantity is not an excuse for quality. The cheese they gave me was meh. One softer mozzarella style and another flavourless Gouda. The prosciutto was good, but their salami was hard and kinda greasy. They tried to make up for the low quality meat and cheese with a TON of bread (which was good) and an insane amount of pickles. We had a staff Christmas dinner last Saturday at 7pm and we sat upstairs at a table of 8 and the music was so loud we couldn't hear each other . We asked to have the music turned down twice, but nothing. The food was good, but we will NEVER have a staff dinner there again! Our bill was huge, but such a disappointment. There were other larger tables too and so everyone was having to yell just to try to hear. read more

The 'Griz' (as the locals call it) is a restaurant by day and a bar/club/pool hall by night. The restaurant serves your typical Canadian food--burgers, fries, wings, etc. The crowd is a mix of locals, students from Queen's/RMC/St. Lawrence and visitors in town for the weekend. The drinks are your standard fair; their was no site of drink specials or anything beyond what you would find at your local watering hole. The music was Top 40 with upstairs being somewhat of a respite from the crazyness that is the first floor on a Friday/Saturday night. The waitstaff were more than attentive and were quick to approach us when we arrived. My principal nit-pick is with the bouncers who--like any club anywhere in the world--were a little overeager. They threw one of our party members out for bumping into one of them on the stairs. That left a bad taste in my mouth; I know they're just doing their job but this friend was not drunk and they refused to return the credit card that he had left for a tab until the next morning. Coat check is $2 and efficiently run; hats off to the girls who run that. I'll be back but there are many other options in town that I'd prefer for my next visit to K.dot. read more

The initial impression upon walking in is this place smells awesome. The wood burning pizza oven is reminiscent of a camp fire or scrumptious smoke house. The service was friendly & the server was quite attentive. My boyfriend and I ordered a pasta dish, which was heavy on the pasta, and totally skimped on the veggies, and meat. This establishment does nothing to protect its patrons. My friends and I went here to play some pool and some other guests were harassing us and trying to trick us into playing pool with them. We ended up leaving to go to the other side of the room to play and witnessed them hiding their pool balls and waiting for the next group of girls to arrive to play the same stunt. When we went to notify the bouncers, they completely ignored us and yelled to get our drinks off the side of the pool table. They were unsupportive and just watched what was happening, doing nothing. As long as they're getting paid right? Plenty of other places to play pool, that's for sure. read more

While I have eaten here before and really enjoyed it, this latest visit was a failure. We made reservations for upstairs to watch the grey cup. When we got there (30 min before the game) they could not figure out their satellite until about 20 min into the game. The food was ok, but certainly not as good as I remember it being 7-8 years ago. "The Grizz" as we locals call it, is certainly a Kingston staple. A huge establishment, you can always get a table. It's got a cozy wilderness lodge feel to it, and the fireplaces make it warm and cozy in the winter. My favorite dinner is the wild salmon with compound butter, wild mushrooms and rice pilaf. Absolutely divine! I tried the Muskoka pizza last time, although it was pretty plain. I also like the selection of local wines. Their cheesecakes are delicious as well! We come here every year for our New Years Eve celebration. It's decently priced, and they do a three/four course dinner with champagne and dancing the night away included! It's also a great spot to come weekends after 11pm to hit the dancefloor (they usually have a pretty decent D.J.) They also do Sunday breakfasts I believe. I've been here twice, both on weekday evenings. This place represents a great place to play pool in downtown Kingston. I can't comment on the food quality as I've only been for drinks and pool. Walking in, the place is really nice. Smells strong of enticing foods, a big open kitchen being just to the right. There is a nice dining room in the front and two very cool rooms in the back done in a west coast chalet theme, really warm and inviting. Upstairs is a big bar area and then maybe a dozen pool tables. You pay by the minute (rate $10/hr) and the equipment is in good condition. I will definitely come back whenever I want to play pool in Kingston. They offered something like ten draft beer choices and the prices were pretty typical. So if you want a drink in a classy atmosphere or shoot some pool without any weird people lurking in the corners, give the Griz a shot read more

Good menu, poor execution. Despite it being an open kitchen, one of their head chefs would normally come in horribly sick (not that needed to be sick to constantly be sniffing with wide sketchy eyes) if you know what I mean). In front of full view of customers coughing into his hands and then touching food without washing. The place is notorious as a place to work. Chefs will throw things directly at the back of your head. The reason the food costs so much is that salary workers will stand around making a small fortune while minimum wage workers are expected to be working to the point of sweating all the time. Typically, in a business during the slow hours it is very unusual for a salary worker to be playing on their phone while an hourly paid worker does all the work. Send the hourly worker home, save some money, and pass the savings on to a customer. read more

A bit of a line to get in, but that was tolerable. Price of pool was a bit expensive, but tolerable. Music was dated, but tolerable. Bar staff was rude, and INTOLERABLE. $8 per shot, and the bartendress scolded me that if I didn't leave a tip, she would have to pay out of pocket. And that was before I even got my change back. I was back in Kingston for a reunion. I won't mention how many years... The Grizzly hosted our get together one evening and did a fantastic job of accommodating us. The food was all snacks for a large group so I can't vouch for the regular fare. However, the snacks were quite good and filled a hole between drinks. This is format a bar and the drinks were top notch. The wait staff were attentive and circulated regular saving a trip to bar. The music is of the pop and dance variety in keeping with the decor and young student vibe. Might be a bit loud if you are on the older side but fun all around. read more

We aren't from Kingston and went in to the Grizzly almost by accident. But how fortuitous. The place is very nicely decorated kind of modern rustic. A great selection of local craft beers and the food was awesome. A good selection of entrées that will keep everyone happy. If you're in Kingston this is a great place all around. Lastly I would be remise if I didn't mention our server Hanna. She was spectacular. Very knowledgeable on beers and the menu. Very engaging and super friendly. Reservation at 7:00pm for our large group was made two months in advance. By 10:00pm only half the group had their meals. Absolutely no communication from wait staff who took orders then and disappeared. Afterwards we had to ask the manager for a discount as they thought an apology would be enough. Discount that was given was minimal. Teenagers went outside for a bit while we waited and weren't allowed back in because apparently the place turns into a bar at 10pm and they weren't old enough (even though all the parents were inside waiting for our bills which we also had to ask for twice and waited even longer to receive). All of this only to find out that had I gone by myself and ordered off the regular menu my meal would only have cost $17 but since I was with a group that was given a very small "special" menu it cost $25??! Lived in Kingston for almost 20 years. What took me so long to visit this place? After a disgusting, poorly cooked meal at the local Red Lobster once, I hesitantly ordered the Surf & Turf. The steak and lobster tail were perfectly prepared and delicious. Most impressive were the kids meals. They are prepared with the same quality as the adult meals and looked equally appealing. Staff is friendly, restaurant was very clean, and the service was rather fast considering the place was packed. This is now my family's restaurant of choice, and I can't wait to go back. read more

We decided to check out the Grizzly Grill after an evening watching the Miles Davis Documentary, a worthwhile viewing at the Screening Room. So disappointed in the Grizzly Grill! We ordered the special platter for two which included (garlic mashed potatoes, grilled carrots, green beans, fries, ribs, AAA roast beef, chicken wings, chorizo sausage and slaw/macaroni salad). For starters, no complimentary bread/butter while waiting for the meal but the server did take care of our drinks. I gave it a star because the chilled dry Riesling was very good in spite of the dried piece of food on the outside of the glass. The chicken wings were over cooked, actually they were dry and charred. I was shocked that someone would actually allow that to leave the kitchen and as the server I could not present this to a customer. The meal was barely warm and the ribs at that temperature were dry and rubbery. The roast beef was tolerable but lukewarm, unacceptable. When serving a meal the temperature is of high importance for flavour and to prevent food poisoning. This experience was beyond disappointing. We decided to take the leftovers including the charred chicken wings to show a friend who works in the food industry to get her perspective of what is being served at the Grizzly Grill. Went here for the first time - atmosphere is great. Food is filling, but really good. The sticky toffee dessert is absolutely amazing. Almost no wait for the food, and the maple pepper butter that comes with the bread is to die for. Highly recommended, good prices. read more

We were on the Friends For Life Bike Rally and they chose to have a Prix Fixe Menu which was an awesome. The salad & desert bar was great as well as they fresh prepared meal at the grill. We were in and out in great time, the service was great and the price was right. And I understand they were donating a portion of the nights revenues back to the Bike Rally so it was a win / win of a night. I had the Prime Rib and it melted in my mouth. read more

It is a pretty popular joint among students. Food is okay, filling, but nothing stands out. The inside looks slightly run down but its usually so crowded at night on weekends so you don't really notice. Its kind of like a club at night but there isn't a big enough dance floor. If you are looking for a night out in Kingston, its one of the better choices. read more

This is one of my favourite restaurants. I've gone with many different group sizes, even with of group of around 30 and the service was great. I've had a few different things from there, but my favourite was the chicken bacon avocado club. They also start you off with warm bread that comes with an amazing maple peppercorn butter, and it's honestly what keeps me coming back. read more

I was refused service because of my disability. The Waitresses were rude and I explained my situation and again they wouldn't serve me. I even tried to order a Pepsi, they refused. The amount of ignorance from the staff was appalling. I will never again set foot in this restaurant/ bar.I also wrote a complaint to the manager, addressing this, and I never received a response. I would recommend this restaurant to someone who has low expectations for casual dining. There were cobwebs on the ceiling fixtures, gum under the dining tables and vomit in the washroom. Went to the Grizz for pool and drinks. When we got there, we exchanged out IDs for pool balls. The bar tenders did not mention any hourly charge for pool. After about four hours a bar tenders by name of Kayla came up to us and said that the pool tab was up to 60 dollars. We were shocked because they hadn't mentioned any charge when handing us the pool balls. When we went up to pay, I mentioned that I had no idea that they charged hourly, and that no one had told us. She responded rudely "oh, you didn't know it cost money to play pool", and then her and her coworker (Jamie) sneered at us. This was extremely rude, especially since (a) they never mentioned a charge at the onset and (b) we weren't suggesting that we wouldn't pay for it. This is absolutely not the way to treat customers and I'm surprised that management would allow such attitude from Staff. Absolutely would not return and suggest that others avoid. read more
