This place is a pricier pseudo-Japanese sushi bar and is really good. It's a nicer, trendier place in the Provo Riverwoods, with the mountains as your backdrop. We brought some Japanese students here and they really enjoyed the take on their food. There are many delicious sushi options to choose from and great presentation. My favorite is the baked lobster roll that melts in my mouth every single time. It's so, so good. And great portions as well. We generally like to do family style and order a bunch to try out as a group. It's been lovely every time. Great staff, but a slower service. read more

This place used to be really good. We go at least six times a year. However, recently it seems that it's really gone downhill. Sat down and waited about 10 minutes before someone even approach our table. Since we already knew what we wanted, we ordered immediately. When they brought our drinks, they let us know that they did not have any straws because there was a straw shortage. I also asked for some sweetener for my drink. Again, I was told that there was a shortage however, our waitress did find one packet. When our Chicken teriyaki bowls came, they were on a plate. I asked the waitress why the chicken teriyaki bowl was being served on a plate. She said that they are out of bowls. At this point it was getting comical. There were a few tables around us who actually had bowls. After she served us dinner, she disappeared. The chicken wasn't hot at all. In addition there wasn't much teriyaki sauce on the chicken. We waited a few minutes to see if she would return, she did not. We had to get up and go ask someone else for some more teriyaki sauce. In addition, we also had to get up when we were out of drinks to ask for refills. In the end, we had to get up one more time to find someone to bring us our check. This was a very poor experience. Not what we are used to. Like I mentioned in the beginning, it seems like the last couple of times it has gone downhill both service and food wise. This last experience killed it for me. read more

The presentation was great. I had to try out this place as I'm from NYC and absolutely love spider and shrimp tempura rolls. I began with the spider roll. When chewing the piece with the large protruding crab tempura, I began to notice a strange taste and moistness. I couldn't continue eating it. I've never had Spider rolls that reek like this. I then tried to find the source of moistness, of which felt like biting into a soaked sponge. That's when I bit into the remaining protruding piece of crab tempura. Again, the reek of spoiled fish traveled up my nostrils and I could not continue eating. I am unsure if the moistness is from oil or water of some kind... If this wasn't enough, the rice paper of the spring roll was not strong enough to support the condiments inside and fell apart. The shrimp had a similar odd (faint) smell and the sauce was too liquidy, not at all what a fresh spring roll peanut sauce is supposed to be or taste like. Unfortunately, I cannot finish this meal. The best part of my order was the Uber eats delivery service. After reading reviews, I understand food poisoning is a common phenomenon when eating here. Great sushi is hard to find in Utah. There's a good number of okay places, but nothing great. If I were in a coastal city I'd give this place 4 stars for quality and price. But comparatively to other local spots, this is the best sushi restaurant I've been to in the Provo/Orem area. Our server was really great. He knew the menu and provided excellent recommendations for our party of 4. We started with sashimi, sushi, and. edamame. My wife and college daughters had their teriyaki chicken plate, orange chicken, Ake teriyaki pork which I sampled and they were all good. The tuna sashimi was very good. I hoped for blue fin which is really fatty, fantastic. They didn't have it but the quality I was served was pretty darn good. The only thing fishy about this restaurant, is the quality of the sushi. It was a great place to satisfy my craving. The atmosphere was good, I especially liked the black curtains that surrounded my booth, which offered a secluded feeling--my own sanctuary. I'm also a fan when I can gulp down the last of my water, lean over to take a bite of sushi and by the time I've looked back over--my glass is full already. The waitress was practically a ninja, and a quiet one at that, which I appreciated since I didn't want to chat with half of a fish in my mouth. The best part of the meal was the complimentary to-go cups our waitress offered AND the delightful mints that washed away the fishy breath. A great evening was had by all! TIPS & TRICKS: * Make sure to get a reservation, everyone knows about this gem of a restaurant. * Take advantage of the location, especially in the winter, there are lights surrounding the square which make for a nice walk. FOOD POISONING ALERT: Long story short: Several family members contracted food poisoning from eating here and the management refuses to acknowledge their mistakes. There is cheaper and better sushi around. Stay away from Happy Sumo. The full story: Recently ate here to celebrate a family member's birthday. I had eaten there once before, and the sushi was generally good. However, it's quite expensive for sushi that is about on par with a lot of other significantly cheaper places around, so it has never been my choice for a sushi restaurant. This time was not good... On this visit, there were seven of us from three different households. Three members of the party, for various reasons, did not order sushi and instead ate other items off the menu. The other four of us ordered a handful of rolls to share around. We had to wait a while for the food to arrive. When it finally arrived, someone in our group who had eaten there the most commented that the sushi was not as good this time as it had been in the past. About 24 hours later I started having light stomach pains. I assumed it was something small (hunger, gas, something along those lines), and assumed it would be gone by the next morning. It wasn't. I didn't have hardly any appetite, and my stomach still hurt. I went about my day getting more exhausted and feeling worse every hour. By mid-day I was heaving out all the contents of my stomach and felt horrendous. I found out shortly thereafter that three other family members outside my household were experiencing the same thing I was. The symptoms were exactly the same, and the timeline was identical. There were four of us feeling sick: the four of us that had eaten the sushi. The other three family members that had eaten other items felt completely fine. This is when we put together that it must have been the sushi. The lower quality had been noticed, and the sickness set in at the exact same time with the exact same symptoms for the four of us that had eaten the same things. That's not indicative of a virus. As expected with food poisoning, we were mostly over the symptoms 24-48 hours after they set in. None of the other three family members ever got sick at all. One member of our party contacted Happy Sumo about our experience. The issue escalated to the corporate level, and their corporate office contacted us and told us that they determined we got sick from a virus or some other cause and not from their food. They never spoke to us directly. Stay away from Happy Sumo. There is cheaper sushi that is better quality, and the management will not own up to its mistakes. The fact that they blamed our sickness on a virus shows they did not take the time to look at the facts, let alone actually speak with us to find out the details of what happened. They clearly care more about pushing off responsibility than looking after their customers. read more

Got food poisoning after eating here, was told by Happy Sumo it must have been an unrelated cold or virus. Here are the details: 3 families from 3 different homes ate here together at our table to celebrate a birthday. Some from each ate from various shared sushi rolls, and some who don't like sushi ate other items (cooked tempura, etc.). It was not a good meal - some commented about how something was off and that they were not in any hurry to go back. About 30 hours later, it hit - everyone from all three households that ate sushi all ended up vomiting, diarrheic, and very sick for about two days - except for one that was sick for 4-5 days due to food poisoning exacerbating a hiatal hernia. It was clearly food poisoning due to the timing, circumstances and symptoms. I reported it to Happy Sumo who "investigated" it, and wrote: "we can only deduce that your experience was likely caused by something else and if it has lasted multiple days it may be some type of virus or cold." Yeah, a virus or cold. And only one of us had symptoms for multiple days as described. Happy Sumo is expensive - I would expect more. Everyone makes mistakes, but it is how we handle those mistakes that set us apart. Happy Sumo did not handle the situation well at all. Being brushed off with an amateur diagnosis by upper management who never spoke with us leaves me disappointed and frankly a bit put off. Had this been handled differently, I would have still written an honest review but with a positive outcome. As it stands, I do NOT recommend eating here, and you roll the dice should you decide to go yourself. You will pay a premium for sure, and hope that you don't fall ill because if you do, it will most like be due to a "cold". Puhleeeeze. There are a lot of better sushi options in Utah County. Pick one of them and you will be happier. read more

Saturday lunch at 12:30pm is a ghost town (people around here looove going out for dinner instead). We walked in to no greeting and had to walk into the restaurant to let a worker know we were there ready to eat. The nigiri didn't seem fresh, rice was dry, and asparagus over sauced for being paired with the already saucy miso salmon (excellent salmon). Surf and Turf roll is fine, a good one to try if you're not into raw fish. Potstickers are okay (although the Ling Ling brand from Costco taste just as good). Dragon Scales are our favorite group appetizer; it's nice to eat one or two. We were surprised at how long it took to get our order since there were only 8 of us in the entire place. For the price, we don't feel like it's worth it when we can get better stuff for less elsewhere. Sitting in the booth with a date or on a double date is a fun time. read more

We arrived at lunch time on a Saturday and there were only 2 other tables filled. Our waitress was friendly and attentive so we didn't have the service issues that other reviewers mentioned. Decor & ambience are fabulous. We immediately ordered an appetizer and then waited about 5 minutes when our waitress came back to fill our waters and said the appetizer will be out shortly. 10 minutes later, no appetizer. It did come about 5 minutes after that. The place is nearly empty so this is concerning. They did bring our Miso soup in the meantime. Surprisingly the rest of our food came only a few minutes after. Bottom line, don't come if you are in a hurry probably. The rolls were average, didn't knock my socks off. Tsunami in Lehi is better in terms of other local options. The nigiri in particular tasted dry and not as fresh as it should be. The best thing I had was the deep fried surf & turf roll. The miso salmon had a fun flavor as well. My stomach is clinically depressed right now after eating here this forbidding, rainy afternoon. Our waitress immediately broke a glass at our feet, bless her heart, and we ordered lettuce wraps and sashimi. And you know what? It was terrible, terrible food. Oh and lukewarm miso soup with 4 chunks of tofu in it. But that was the best part. The lettuce wraps were filled with an orange and red carpet-looking mass that was too spicy to eat. I think there was some chicken maybe. And tomatoes. We ordered the large sashimi and were provided with a small plate of thick sliced raw fish. The octopus had all its suckers attached. I tried to eat one or two pieces but gave up trying to unravel one of the stringy pieces of fish. All in a bed of lettuce and cucumbers. I have now become seriously ill. I don't think it was food poisoning by any means. It was just sad, disgusting food. And you know what? I'd give them 5 stars for some of their food: some appetizers, a few of their rice bowls, even a few of their traditional rolls. But this was the absolute worst sushi I've ever had. And there's just no excuse. And to the first date sitting next to me, staring me down, while I tried to choke down chewy fish parts, I hope you enjoyed it more than I did. It was 8:45 PM on a Sunday night and Happy Sumo was set to close in 15 minutes. Dread set in. Would they tell us that it was too late to seat us? Now that I think about it, dread is not strong enough a word to describe the absolute anguish we were going through. Just thinking about it now, weeks after the fact, I still remember the gut-wrenching distress. But it wasn't a problem! The friendly servers happily sat us! What a relief! This place serves more non-traditional sushi rolls which I really enjoy. I didn't enjoy how many different rolls they had because a stomach is only so big and choice paralysis is never fun! Alas, such is life! We had the Dragon Roll, BSCR (Baked Scallop California Roll), and Rock'n Roll rolls. All were delicious. I would love to come back and try some of their other rolls. read more

Terrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrible customer service. I purchased a gift card online on September 29th for my sister's birthday (October 6th). That same day, I received an automatic confirmation that my card had been sent via USPS. Knowing it only had about 30 miles to travel, I was confident it would reach her in plenty of time. The day after her birthday (October 7th, now nine days after I ordered the card), my sister told me that my gift had never arrived. Concerned, I emailed Happy Sumo and was promptly assured by "Ania Sego, Guest Services" that my card had been mailed on October 1st and should be there any day. Four days later it did arrive, and I breathed a sigh of relief (I have really terrible luck with USPS - they ALWAYS lose my stuff, so I thought it might never arrive). That is, until my sister remarked that the envelope was postmarked on October 7th. What! October 7th!? The day I emailed them wondering if the card had been mailed!? The day I was told "your card was mailed out on the 1st"!? I called Ania out, and instead of apologizing and offering any sort of rectification, she doubled down. Instead of having been *mailed* on the 1st, as she told me before, she now said it had been placed in their mail *queue* on the 1st, and that pickup/postage dates vary. In my response I pointed out to her that I'd been specifically told it was MAILED on the 1st, not that it had been placed in some pile for a week. At this point she just quit responding to me. Oh, in her email she also told me that they can take up to 2 days to fulfill the order and their website states that USPS can take up 10 business days to ship it once it's been mailed, and that therefore it technically HAD arrived within that window - completely missing the point. If the letter had been postmarked on the 1st and it had taken 10 days to arrive, then whatever. That's out of their control. What IS within their control is how soon they mail it, and how they treat their paying customers. TL;DR: My gift card was clearly forgotten about, when I inquired about it nine days later someone went *oh crap* and stuck it in the mail and then told me it had been mailed a week before (either not realizing the postmark would broadcast their mistake, or hoping my sister wouldn't think to check it), and then quit responding to my emails. One of my favorite sushi restaurants. I've spent significant time in or lived in Washington DC, Austin Texas, Salt Lake City and Provo Utah, Puerto Rico, the US Virgin Islands and Los Angeles. Happy Sumo has been consistently number one or two of all the places I've tried over the last 10 years. Their sushi is always fresh and they have unique delicious combinations of flavors. Service has always been outstanding and the restaurant is pristine. I'm kind of a germaphobe so really love finding restaurants that focus on cleanliness. read more

We've gone here before and loved it! This time, we came in and sat for an HOUR. We watched as people came and went, all before we got our food. When we asked when our food would be ready, we were told the food was just getting started as there were lots of tickets before ours. We knew that wasn't true as there were not that many guests and we saw people get their food after we put in our order. All in All, I like the happy sumo, the serving sizes on kitchen items are always worth the price you pay for them. Even though I find that most of their kitchen dish is just the same five things that are reorganized and with different portions for each dish. I think their food is good, but kind of boring in flavor. I will say this though their sushi rolls are a bit on the ricey side. which just means they have more rice than filling. Still, they don't fall apart and they have good quality yummy tasting ingredients inside. The inside of the restaurant is nicely done as well, It's thought out and structured perfectly in an almost relaxing way. As for the service, I wouldn't really tip the servers well. the menu was online and basically, all they did was walk to the kitchen and pick up the food and walk back. If you want good sushi, this is not the place to go. They charge high prices for mediocre sushi. I got the Vegas roll and Jezzebelle. The Jezebel was wrapped poorly and the flavors didn't work. The ratios inside the roll were weird. I didn't hate the roll, but I've had better. I also got the Tempura vegetables. Now traditionally Japanese food is small enough that it is bite size so you can pick it up with chopsticks. With the vegetables, while the playing was pretty, the portions were as big as my hands with full onion rings and sweet post the length of a potato. Speaking of, the sweet potatoes were raw. The service was great, but it did take an hour to get our food out. That was on top of waiting an hour for our table because they don't take reservations on Fridays and Saturdays. read more

Then we had the lobster roll which had a ton of coooked lobster/crab salad on top of soy paper roll. My daughter really liked them. I really couldn't tell what was in the rolls themselves. We also had the Mia roll which had avocado, tempura shrimp, eel, and crab salad. It was the best tasting of all the rolls we had today. We also had the soft shell crab roll which came really tinyMy husband also ordered the Siam noodles with shrimp which was too salty and had broken rice noodles. Overall, hit or miss. Next time, we would try other sushi rolls and not bother with other menu items. We came back again on a Sunday. This time we got the fried crab wontons, which were really good. Crispy on outside and creamy hot on inside. Then my daughter got the sushi roll with baked crab on top and she liked it, along with everyone else who tried it. I got the shrimp tempura roll, which was average. My son got the caterpillar roll, and he enjoyed that. Another kid got the dragon roll and it looked good, with lots of spicy tuna and roe in top. He ate all of it. Then my son and husband both got the yakisoba noodles with shrimp. It was ok, not outstanding. The vegetables were somewhat over cooked and the noodles were thin.
