was recommended to me by so many of my coworkers so i had to give it a try. i'm so glad that i listened to them, totally worth the 35 minute drive! i was anticipating a long line but when i got there, there was no sort of line and there weren't that many people in there. i was greeted by amazing staff members who were patient with me trying to figure out what to order. i ended up ordering the pastrami burger and the chili cheese fries. i will say, food is a little pricey however it is so worth it! you get what you pay for. the burger was packed with so many things which allowed the flavor to really pop in your mouth. same thing with the pastrami fries, i definitely would recommend sharing a portion of them with other people. there's no way one person can finish it by themselves it's such a big plate! overall my experience was amazing, i definitely will continue to make the drive. read more

There plenty of places to grab lunch at in Los Angeles but on October 8th (2023), The Hat was the most convenient place to get something to eat. Usually when I travel, I try to be more curated with my cuisine but I didn't have that luxury on this occasion. Nonetheless, I think the name and notoriety of this chain is the best thing about it. I stopped at this location around 1:15pm on a Sunday for lunch with a special friend. It was a long weekend and we were preparing for a long day so I figured I'd load up on calories. The location was intentionally nostalgic and had a curious appeal to it. The physical appeal definitely stands out given the area. We ordered from their menu outdoors and sat on the patio near the parking lot. I ordered the Chili Cheese burger with no onions and fries. There wasn't almost anyone else ordering or arriving so our food came out pretty fast. They give you an entire bag full of fries and the burger was both robust and sloppy. The burger was well cooked and tolerable but the chili was bland and it didn't seem worth the mess after it was all over with. It was a messy meal for sure, it definitely filled me up, and we got fries for the road but I wasn't necessarily ecstatic about the experience afterwards. I don't mean to bash the establishment, the workers or the food. Being from Oklahoma, I'm very accustomed to seeing diner and drive-in-themed restaurants except, they usually deliver a more satiating, cheap and deliciously unhealthy meal. I think The Hat is good for what it is. Who knows, maybe I went at the wrong time or ordered the wrong thing, but I'm not too encouraged to return unless under the right circumstances. read more

Have been coming here for yearsss! The food is always great! We got Chili Cheese Fries and a Pastrami Burger. Both items were so good. Not a surprise. The employees are always friendly and I have not had a bad experience here. The inside has a good amount of seating and is always kept clean. read more

LOCATION - I visited their Monterey Park location, which was on a busy corner. Their parking lot is really small and I wasn't able to find parking. I had to go down into one of the residential streets. Not too bad but be prepared. FOOD - Ordered the Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries and Chili Cheese Dog. The Pastrami Chili Cheese Fries was huge! Lots of fries, which I wish were more crispy and seasoned, a good amount of delicious pastrami, and hearty chili cheese. Everything was really flavorful. The Chili Cheese Dog was also super good and bigger than I expected. It came with shredded (non-melted) cheddar cheese, pickles, mustard, tomato on a French roll. SERVICE - Despite being really packed and a line out the door, the workers were moving fast and getting things done. Service was decent overall. I think they have high prices, which for me didn't make the most sense. I'd definitely go again, but not as often as I'd like. read more

I have been wanting to try the chili cheese fries with and without pastrami at this place. This place is always packed and it seems that ERRRRRR BODY and they momma's orders them. After my son's soccer tournament, and cause it was on the way, I said let's get chili cheese fries at The Hat. Everyone was on board. But L.A get to the food!! How was your visit!?!? Welllllllllllllllllllllllllll...... For starters there is no AC for some reason!? Why!?!? Who knows!!! So it's hot as balls in there, stuffy, and way too many people in there for comfort. Come on guys. Flip the switch' and turn ON The AC! What about the food you ask!? Well, It was just OK. The chili fries were plentiful. Enough for 2. But aside from portion size. Nothing else to write home to mom about here. The chili was bland almost flavorless. Not even with the pastrami on top were the chili fries above average. Had to use ketchup on chili cheese fries to get better flavor going. The pastrami sándwich was honestly the best and that was cause of the pickles and mustard. my favorite place to big back I always get the chilli fries w cheese and tomatoes and pickles and it always hits. I haven't had this in over a year and I forgot how good it is. it's the perfect amount of cheesiness and flavor. I love how it's not that salty as well! the portions are always so big too so it's a nice side/meal to share, and always worth the money. the cheese and tomatoes and pickles cost extra money but I def reccomend adding it bc it doesn't taste the same without it!!! The Hat is your classic old school burger joint. They serve tons of different things and known for lots. It has nice old school feel to it. The service is really good. I got the chili cheese fries and they were exactly what you would expect. A whole lot of chili and cheese on top of fries. The fires could have been seasoned better and the chili could have had a tad bit more flavor. All in all they were good not great but a lot of food for the price. When the current experience matches the memory!!! In college I would go to the Hat in Brea a lot, and grab a pastrami burger and fries! This afternoon got to visit the Monterey Park location and was NOT disappointed at all. The food and service were exceptional. The pastrami on the burger was tender and so abundant I had to get a fork to finish what was leftover . Appreciate the cook for pre-cutting the burger as well. I paired my burger with a cherry coke. Hadn't been to the hat in awhile. Came on a Saturday night and it was packed. The tables were all taken but once they became free nobody was really wipping them down. The pastrami sandwich was a bit too soggy and the meet was cold. The chili fries were crispy but they were missing salt. They are generous with the Chilli but it was missing some flavor. Though they are busy, the workers are all really nice and try pushing the food out as quickly as possible. read more

Still a solid meal after 44 years of coming to this spot! Honestly the pastrami is not quite how remembered it as super juicy and packed with meat(shrink-flation I guess). The wet fries are the same old greatness. The staff is still super nice, fast service and the seating is comfortable. Overall, the prices are good, good portions, and good service. Always love coming to at The Hat. Don't live near by so we have to make a 30 minute drive out (without traffic). The food is very consistent and always delicious. This is one of the best pastrami places you will find. Chili fries are amazing as well. If you come during lunch time be prepared to wait for seating. Great pastrami sandwiches to be had at the Hat! Old school delicious food. There is something comforting about walking into a place like this that reminds me of being a kid. Bring a friend because the sandwiches are big and if you get the chili cheese fries, you'll need the help. Everything was delicious and prepared to order. My only issue is that it is a little chaotic waiting from tour order to come out. They need to have something visually when the order comes up because it's very hard to hear them when they call out your numbers. read more

I really wanted to like this place, but I have to be honest about my experience. I ordered the pastrami fries, and for $20, I expected something flavorful, fresh, and worth the price. Unfortunately, they were a huge disappointment. The fries were extremely dry and completely flavorless. The pastrami itself didn't have much seasoning or depth, and overall the entire dish just lacked taste. There was no richness, no balance of flavors, nothing that made it enjoyable. It honestly felt like everything was just thrown on top without any care or proper seasoning. For $20, I couldn't even finish them and I never leave food behind. That says a lot. I kept trying to give it another bite thinking maybe I just got a bad section, but every bite was the same: dry and bland. No flavor, no moisture, no real effort. I'm not someone who enjoys leaving negative reviews, but when you're charging premium prices, the quality needs to match. This just didn't meet expectations at all. Waited in line for over a half an hour finally when I got to the counter I ordered a pastrami dip and onion rings. The pastrami dip was excellent. Been there twice now had roast beef on second visit. Great place open late ampl parking. Free refills on drink requests. It worth the trip alone for the onion rings alone. Those were the best piping hot to order and the breading really clings to onion with every bite. Had some left over the next day and still great with microwave reheat. Worth the drive late night after a game at Staples/Crypto Arena! And they don't overcharge!! read more

My cousins were visiting from Northern CA and had a craving for pastrami. He and his wife wanted to go to The Hat. I love a great pastrami sandwich and my favorite place is closed on Sunday. So we took the drive here. The pastrami sandwich here is as good as any of the fast food burger places around here, other than going to a delicatessen to get a great pastrami sandwich. This place has completely fallen apart. My family and I used to love The Hat, but in the last two years, it's become a total mess. They're fully staffed yet have no clue what they're doing. The woman taking orders is painfully slow, and the young cooks behind the counter are running around with zero organization. The line is long, people are complaining, and food just sits there getting cold. I watched fries pile up for over 20 minutes before anyone bothered to serve them. When I asked for yellow chilies, one of the workers literally threw a small packet at me. I asked politely for more, said thank you, and he completely ignored me with an attitude. That's not customer service -- that's disrespect. To make things worse, the cashier didn't even wash her hands before jumping into the food area to "help." That's disgusting. Absolutely no hygiene, no professionalism, and no management oversight. I ordered four pastrami sandwiches and chili cheese fries, and everything was terrible. The pastrami was paper-thin with barely any meat, portions have shrunk, and prices went up. It feels like they're cutting corners everywhere while treating customers like an inconvenience. This place used to have pride in its food and service. Now it's chaos, poor attitude, and low standards. First time I went I ordered some fries and a sandwich, waited about 30 minutes considering that there wasn't many people and when asked about my food they all looked lost and said they didn't have my food order. Showed them my receipt and said they would have it ready. Went again for some fries a couple months after and they seemed to be very rude that day. The customer in front of me was obviously new and was trying to figure out what to order so when she was asking the cashier questions about the food he seemed very impatient and would roll his eyes. the last GOOD pastrami sandwiches in L.A... ...too bad they aren't actually IN L.A. Most pastrami in L.A. is the overly-lean, overly-salty crap, grilled or microwaved. Yuck! The Hat is the only place I've seen in the area that serves REAL, properly-steamed pastrami. Portions are generous, I recommend the pastrami cheeseburger, or pastrami sandwich au jus. (hint: the au jus sandwich gets soggy very quickly - but - you can order it with meat and bun separated and au jus on the side, pop it in the refrigerator, and warm everything up the next day, and it's still pretty damn good!) We use to go to the first fundamental bible church. It is no longer in Monterey park. She use to take the bus to church and while walking we would if I was lucky as a treat has Sunday lunch here. Best pastrami I've had in L.A. And I love pastrami. First, they pile it on, high and full, on a crispy french roll with mustard and pickles. That's it. then they dip it in au jus. Just perfect! You'll want to eat it right away, while the roll is still crispy as the au jus soaks in. It really is heavenly. Also, good fries. The Hat is delicious; nothing more need be said. Whatever you get here you will enjoy. The only downside is if your a health freak, because then you will not enjoy it. The chili cheese fries are teriffic, and if you add pastrami on it its even better. I know this place is known for pastrami but I go for the chili fries. They serve a giant portion, enough to eat for days. It is easily enough for two to three people for about $7 dollars an order. I have yet to try anything else from the menu, I always end up getting the fries. The only problem is that this place can get really packed, especially during lunch hours. I walked but it seems like they have parking in the back because people were entering through the back door. I ordered the Mombo plate which is a choice of sub and 2 sides. For sub I ordered THE 58 CLASSIC and as sides I had their Garlic Pesto Potato Salad and Purple Cabbage. Both good but very garlic centered, I love garlic so I don't mind but maybe next time I'll get something else to balance it better. Service was good. They greeted and answered any questions I had and offered their advice or recommendations when I asked for some.
