Finally tried this place after so many years and being on the westside i dont get to the eastside that often. Also Johnies Pastrami is near me as well. I have to say i think i enjoy The Hat Pastrami sandwich a bit more than Johnies. The quality was about equal of the meat, but the amount you get at the Hat is twice that for near half the price. Also I had their onion Ring which were hot crispy and fabulous, and were even good the next day when i reheated some of them for lunch and the breading didnt fall off, impressive. Where is the beef?, had the beef dip lame rip off on beef and forgot the auju, gave another try on the pastrami and samething, chepo location put some meat for the price! Goodness This place is not good anymore. I ordered a steak sandwich and it was the worst ever. I watched them cook the thin piece of steak and the cook was pushing it on the grill 5 times taking out all of the tenderness, it was inedible. No salt and pepper no flavor. Not only is the food great, but I must share this experience. I live close by this location and frequently eat there. A couple of weeks ago, I went and ordered some food. I got my food and left, a few minutes later I realized that I didn't have my wallet. After searching my place and car, I realized I must've dropped it there. I immediately called and was told it was found. I returned to retrieve my wallet and after first verifying it was mine (my DL was inside), it was returned to me. I was both shocked and happily surprised that my $2800 was still there. Night manager refused to accept a cash reward I offered and said it wasn't necessary. To the person who found my wallet and returned it, "Thank you" very much. I hope to someday buy you lunch, at the very least. I've been a loyal fan of The Hat for years, hitting them up time and time again for their "World Famous Pastrami" and never once being disappointed--until now. I used to come to The Hat all the time growing up and loved the pastrami but haven't come in the last few years. I was looking for a late night meal over the weekend and decided that it would be a good time to come back! I ordered the burger with pastrami in it and it was so good! The burger itself was good and the meat was nice and juicy but the pastrami in it is definitely what elevated it. The Hat is known for their pastrami and the praise that it gets is well deserved. My one gripe about the burger is that it costs about $14 after tax; although it is a good burger, I feel like it is overpriced for what it is. I noticed that a lot of items on the menu have gone up significantly since I last came, and although I know that inflation is impacting many businesses, I feel like a lot of things on the menu are really overpriced now. One thing that I really like about the Monterey Park location is that there is indoor seating because a lot of the other locations just have outdoor seating. They're open until 1am so it's also a great choice for a late night meal in the area as most other places in Monterey Park close pretty early. There is a parking lot but it does get cramped sometimes so parking is a bit of a hit or miss. read more

I haven't been here in a while. I was in the area and definitely wanted to give them a visit. Prices are still very reasonable. The meat was the same, but the roll was not. It ruined the sandwich. I asked for it to be toasted, as this is something they didn't mind doing at another location I would frequent. They refused to accommodate. They toast other bread, so I didn't see the problem. Anyway, the bun got soggy and my experience was not to the standard of the historical "The Hat". Not sure if this change to the bread happened at all locations or this one. They need to go back to the old recipe or option toasing of the roll. I hate when an establishment makes changes to something that worked for many, many years. If it's costs, they have wiggle room to raise the price of the sandwich by 50 cents or a little more. Still the best prices for a GOOD pastrami sandwich about anywhere. read more

This place can be busy sometimes but there is also a drive through Every time I come I always get the pastrami sandwich, a grilled cheese, and the orange cream soda. Though the parking lot is rather small, I found an available space immediately. In order to enforce social distancing, there is only one way in and way out of this place. The menu board was clearly posted above the cash register which made ordering a cinch. I ordered a pastrami, turkey sandwich, plain cheeseburger, fries w/ no salt and three soft drinks for the Fam. Seating is limited as several booths are closed off in order to promote social distancing. In my case, I found a available booth immediately. We waited five minutes for our food which is fast in my book. One bite of my turkey sandwich and I was HOOKED! The French roll was so soft and fresh, the turkey meat was DELICIOUS! The fries were good, crsip and fresh, the pastrami was LOADED with meat (a bit too much!) and the beverages were cold to the touch. I WILL be back for more! read more
