This is a decent place, with more than decent people. The staff is excellent, and the regular patrons whom you'll meet if you come often enough are amazing, friendly, unpretentious people. The drinks are regular, just regular, nothing is going to knock your socks off. The food, to me, leaves something to be desired. I have to qualify that by saying much of my extended family is Southern. Many of us are real Southern home cooks...we know how to cook this type of cuisine and how it is supposed to taste. The potato salad is okay, but tastes store bought in all honesty. The macaroni and cheese is not very good at all. The greens are bland, with no seasoning. The 'french fries' are basically single-fried big potato sticks...nothing to write home about. The fried fish is decent, but you don't get that much for the price, and the batter is very salty. (I've had the fried whiting/catfish ~10 times.) The desserts are store bought. The portions aren't voluminous enough for the price...this isn't haute cuisine...if you charge a price like this your portions should make up for that (see Cheesecake Factory, Maggiano's, et. al.). It gets to a point in this industry where it becomes obvious the owner is trying to squeeze out a profit. I wish I had visited the Hitching Post a few years ago when it was under the stewardship of the original owners. There was much praise for that restaurant, but I cannot compare it to the current version. I think most people come here as a sort of tradition or club house, not because the food is especially good. The third star is for the very nice staff (minus the owner), the friendly regulars, and because I respect the tradition of the place in DC. Birthday burgers were the perfect idea for dinner delivery on my birthday. We ordered the Atomic burgers, which was a fantastic jerk seasoned flavor bomb. I loved it! The only issue was that I ordered mine as a cheeseburger cooked medium-well with cheddar, and my partner ordered his just medium without cheese. The cheeseburger arrived medium and the burger arrived well done. I ate the medium because it had the dairy, but I really wanted it cooked more, but I didn't microwave it or try to heat it further so as to not ruin everything else on top of it. But for that mixup of the cheese, this was one of the best burgers I have had ANYWHERE in years. The sides we ordered were mac and cheese, and also collard greens. Here is where I am a little more critical than most. The mac was not very creamy but it was sufficiently filling. The greens were not quite what I was expecting; they were served whole leaf, in what I presume was a butter sauce, yet somewhat bland. I'm southern, so greens are a sacrament to my tastebuds. It didn't take me but a few moments to light up the stove, chop up the greens and little bit, and sauté them for one minute with chopped onion & garlic, salt and cayenne; finished them off with a chili paste from the fridge. I have been coming here for over three decades. The previous owners, Mr. and Mrs. Carter were awesome and always took good care of the customers. Under the new owner Barry , the quality and quantity of food has gone down dramatically. I was there a few weeks ago and for $14 Not including tax and tip I got ONE whiting filet and French fries . See attached photo. When I called back to complain. I was told that was the correct portion. I boycotted the place for well over a month. I finally returned about 10 days ago. While I was sitting at the bar, a large roach decided to walk towards my plate! Horrified, I smashed it in my napkin and quietly notified the bartender. There were others in the bar at the time. Having run a restaurant in the past, I didn't want to call any attention. I gave the roach -y napkin to the bartender and asked him to show it to the owner. He did . When my to go order was ready, I told them they should comp the 8.00 carry out portion of my order . I was told no. My entire meal really should have been comped with a thank you for not alerting other patrons . My husband and I went last night around 10:30 and sat on their deck and it was a cute little romantic setting. We both got the chicken dinner. I don't order chicken when I go out but I had to try theirs and it was nice and juicy, tender and flavorful. The greens were perfectly seasoned and tender and the mac and cheese was nice and cheesy. Take our opinion with a grain of salt, because obviously the great majority of reviews are 4-5 stars...but yelp is really out there for us to make educated decisions about where to eat, so I'll give you my 2 cents. My husband and I were NOT impressed. We are much more interested in quality over quantity anyways, so that may have been part of it. We also neglected to read all of the reviews first, to order the fried chicken :) We ordered, instead, the fried catfish, as we wanted to taste Southern food, traditional style. (We are from San Diego so there is another disclaimer). The portion of fish was huge. Two very large fillets. But I just didn't think that it was very flavorful, and since it was cooked well and the breading was fine (I.e., it was moist), I didn't think it would be very expensive or time consuming to add some yummy spices to the breading to give it some kick...or at least some flavor. This was only my second time having collard greens and I didn't like them, but that's a regional thing so that's fine. The bread is definitely store bought and it's just served untoasted at room temp ... I could definitely skip that. The mac and cheese is NOT very good. I couldn't believe all the reviews that were so positive about it, so I must be in the minority opinion here. But I make homemade mac and cheese at home, and it is SO much more flavorful...it just needs, again, the right spices (like mustard powder and cayenne pepper) as well as the right cheeses (good ones), and maybe a crisp bread crumb/parmesan cheese topping. So maybe I'm spoiled, but to call mac and cheese amazing it would have to be a little more rich/complex than what they make. And the prices have apparently all gone up. This makes a difference when the restaurant still seems kind of dirty with random coke bottles everywhere...suddenly what's cool when you're paying super cheap prices doesn't seem so cool when it's expensive. For ONE meal (above) which comes with two sides, one corn muffin (decent) and ONE bud, it was $30 I believe! All the prices had been crossed out and more expensive prices put on the menu. We ordered one of the cheaper items so it actually could have been more than that...for ONE person...at a restaurant that is supposedly a good value. Obviously it's down to a matter of personal taste, both in flavor and whether you prefer quality vs quantity, but this was our experience, and we would not find ourselves returning again. read more

Long wait for food. High prices for the lack of food you actually get served with a meal. The fish meals basically have ONE fish fillet. Order two meals, or you'll leave hungry. Also, fountain drinks will set you back about $4 a piece. Maybe my expectations were too high for this place but I was definitely disappointed in my experience here. One positive thing... I've seen reviews for Hitching Post for years and finally decided to give it a try. Hmmmmmn.....pulled up and one of DC's Finest (the 4 legged kind) ran across my path. That SHOULD have stopped me but sometimes I like to contribute to my own punishment . Relax, it wasn't on the premises but it was probably just leaving there. Inside, Hitching Post has a Cheers' like ambience. It's a neighborhood bar that serves food. A lot of the customers knew the staff. I was promptly greeted and offered a menu. Since I was taking my food to go, I was offered a seat while I awaited my meal. Against my gut instinct, I ordered the crab cake with fries and broccoli. The broccoli was the star of the show. It was boiled and well-seasoned with salt, pepper, and butter. The fries were nothing to write home about (all 9 of them!). That's right, there was so few of them that I could count them!!! The crab cake? It was lump crab meat with little to no filler but was too salty!!! Good thing I had tartar sauce to counter that overload of sodium. The kicker? This "meal" came in at $32. We went here on a slow Saturday afternoon (Labor Day weekend). We were given EXCUSES FOR EVERYTHING. I cannot imagine what these pitiful people do when it's actually busy. Our drinks took an unreasonably long time. I made the mistake of taking a recommendation for my appetizer from our waiter (who hadn't been working there long). I should feel foolish for trying the CRISPY SPINACH. How/Why did I think fried spinach would be a good idea?!?!? It was a very bad idea. I can understand the kitchen being overwhelmed but I think it was more about the servers not wanting to serve us. It was so sad to feel unwelcome and ignored buy your server. I heard good things about this place so I decided to visit one day. The day I went there were several secret service agents standing in the doorway not wanting to move. Once I was in, I seated myself at the bar. I order a long island that didnt seem to have any alcohol in it. After that I ordered calamari for an appetizer and it taste like it was frozen calamari that was heated up in the microwave for the main course for my entree I ordered the blackened fish the fish was okay it wasn't all wasn't really all that great I had macaroni and cheese as a side which was horrible. My second Yelp brunch outing was actually more like lunch... but no complaining here since it had been a long while since my last fried chicken indulgence. I showed up (fashionably) late with Cadence R. (curse you red line single tracking!), but little did I know that our tardiness would actually be a benefit to some extent. With one cook and one server (Alvin and wife Adrienne), the service is on the slow side, but it's worth it and food comes out with kind of a 'cooked with love' feeling, plus you come away feeling good about supporting a local mom & pop business. Cadence and I ran in to a bit of a snafu when came time to put in our order. We asked for a half chicken with 2 sides... each. Clearly I didn't take the time to look around and realize the sheer quantities of food being distributed to the other tables, because Adrienne just looked up, looked back down, continued to write while shaking her head and mumbling 'that's going to be a lot of food...' Not wanting her to think we were complete pigs, we asked over at another table how much chicken a 'half dinner' provided. We were shocked to see that a 'half' somehow yielded 2 heaping plates full of food, so we quickly changed out order to a single dinner, with mac and cheese, fries, and corn on the cob as sides. The chicken was fantastic. Nice and crispy on the outside, juicy on the inside... just restrain yourself when you first get your plate or you might get burned, everything comes out piping hot. I loved the mac and cheese and corn but the fries I could have done without. After reading some other reviews, I wish I had tried some of the potato salad which looked pretty good. Great lunch and such a deal, final bill I think came to about $12 per person (plus I had 2 huge pieces of chicken and some mac and cheese left over to bring home!) Hot! Hot! Hot! I joined a boatload of other Yelpers for brunch. When I arrived I found out the table I joined had already ordered, and because of the size of our group and the infrastructure of the restaurant we were ordering in shifts and I would have to wait till the next table ordered. About 45 minutes after I sat down the food started to roll onto the table. During our wait time we could see the big guy behind the bar frying away. What was ordered at the table was 4 half-chicken dinners. What appeared at our table over the next 15 minutes was 8 plates of chicken (with 3-4 pieces of fried chicken a plate!), huge bowls of mac and cheese, spinach, greens, and fries. There wasn't a bare space on the table. After the last two plates of chicken arrived it was decided that it was best if I just dug in rather than placing my own order--I would have to help get through all this food. After the 7 of us at the cozy corner both were full, there were still 8 pieces of chicken remaining to take home in to-go bags (which highly resemble Giant grocery sacks I might add). All of the food tasted delicious--and hot sauce is on the table for those of you who like it spicy or did a stint in the south were it is a must have condiment. The fries were HOT HOT HOT! And the corn on the cob ordered at the other table made all of us with full bellies say "aw man, they had corn?". This place is a joint. This place is down home. The service was friendly, and as efficient as it could have been under the circumstances of our group. I would recommend this place to anyone in the neighborhood---that is, if you can name this neighborhood in the far reaches of the city. Some mysteries presented themselves: 1. What it is with the music starting mid-song, then stopping for long periods of time? 2. Why are their packs of Orbitz tacked on the wall behind the bar? Are they for sale? 3. Whats with the bar liqueur selection? (Awesome retro bar chairs) 4. Why did Alicia get her Coca-Cola served in a normal glass, while the "regular" down the bar got his served in a "fancy" wine glass? 4.25 stars. The plain fact that there are over 50 reviews of a place on Upshur Street should tell you everything you need to know about the Hitching Post. Most people (wrongly) avoid this neighborhood, but even the most uptight diversity hating member of society cannot resist the pull of one of DC's former secrets: The Hitching Post. Nestled comfortably on the 200 block of Upshur, the grand Hitching Post is a sharp contrast to the dilapidated structures across the street from it. Upon entering, one feels that they have been transported out of DC and into a friendly small town kitchen replete with the nicest woman this side of the Mississippi (thank you Adrienne for making our meal even that much better). You can order any number of items and be satisfied, but first and foremost, the Hitching Post is about the half-fried chicken. The crisp, juicy skin bursts with flavor, and it is served piping hot. I generally think portion size is an overrated aspect of a review, but here it is truly significant. The half-fried chicken can comfortably feed two and should be enough for three people. The price is $11.75. It is arguably the best deal in the entire city. The cook at the Hitching Post uses a liberal hand when it comes to butter. Therefore, expect your amazing sides to be quite unhealthy. Of course, you are likely here for fried chicken so you should be expecting a heart attack inducing experience. We went with the spinach (divine), the mac and cheese (very good), and the french fries (decent). I hear that the potato salad is also excellent. As far as taste is concerned, I think that the chicken is fine but not the subliminal experience described by a number of reviewers. It is very easy to get carried away by the portion size, but I still prefer the taste of the fried chicken at Henry's over the Hitching Post. Having said that, given the Hitching Post's value, it may have actually surpassed both Henry's and Oohhs and Aahhs as the best comfort food restaurant in Northwest DC. If you are among the uninitiated, you owe it to yourself to try out this lovely restaurant. I'd suggest going around 11:30, securing a booth, and setting aside two hours to enjoy the mouth watering, food coma inducing experience that defines this restaurant. read more

So I had the Branzino for the first time. What I should say is I had Branzino for the first time .my sides were coleslaw and macaroni and cheese the special was $25. The Branzino was okay but I don't think it's reflection on the Hitching Post .I think thats probably how I feel about Branzino. The sides are marginal they always are but get the job done. I still like my neighborhood haunt. Oh yes this is definitely worth mentioning I parked illegally and I told the bartender that's who you go to to get your takeout order that I was going to go back out and sit in the car how much more time did they need. I missed out on the Brunch Brigade's descent on Hitching Post a while ago, so I gathered up my own brunch brigade of girlfriends and we made the trek from three points in the district to converge on this little tiny restaurant in Petworth. We traveled long and far, and when we finally reached our destination we were armed with hours of Yelp research to ensure we had a nothing less than stellar experience at Hitching Post. What I could say has probably already been repeated in all of the other reviews... so I'll just say: Food babies: yes. Fried chicken: yes. Long wait: yes. Good food: yes. Mac & cheese: oh, yes. Sweet tea: yes. yes. Cheap: yes, yes, yes (I haven't paid $17 for ANYTHING this big, ever). Worth it: yes. Go? yes, now. We requested some BBQ sauce, and got a bottle of sweet & spicy store-bought sauce on the table. That definitely met my needs, until the man behind the counter asked if we wanted any of his special sauce. One of the girls raised her eyebrows, I guess "special sauce" always meant something a little strange to her... needless to say, in only a few minutes he whipped it up and it landed on our table. It was delicious - definitely sweeter than the other sauce we had, and very good. I'm not sure what the special ingredient is, but we all loved it. I have no idea how 20 of you attacked this place at once - I can only imagine how backed up they must have been! We were there early Saturday afternoon, and there were only a few regular patrons, and they were basically at capacity. Notes on public transportation: while it's difficult to reach, it's possible. The H8 bus from Rhode Island Ave. Station takes you right there (get off at Rock Creek Church & Upshur) it's about 15 minutes from the station if you take the bus. Otherwise, if you walk from Georgia Ave./Petworth, it is an easy 15-20 minute walk, and definitely great after you eat all of that chicken... It's been two days and I haven't eaten much since then. I arrived a little after noon to this UYE set up by fellow yelper Alicia G. The restaurant is a small unassuming corner home at the junction of Upshur and Rock Creek Church. It was my fortune to find a parking spot close by in one of the residential streets. The facility is not big and consists of a long bar with 3 naugahyde booths at one end. All the yelpers attending the event filled all three booths to capacity. A small kitchen is situated behind the bar on the opposite end of the booths. The proprietor, Alvin was the cook and prepared the food while his wife, Adrienne served us. I'll admit the service was a bit slow, but I don't think Alvin and Adrienne expected the horde of yelpers descending on them on an early Saturday. Another young lady came in later in the afternoon to assist. In any case, all the yelpers at the booths and the bar got their food. Regarding the food, I ordered the fried oysters with mac and cheese and greens as my sides. My booth buddies, Sam and Becky ordered a fried pork chops and fried half chicken dinners with potato salad, spinach and greens. While Justin and Nicole ordered fried oysters and half chicken dinner with corn on the cob, home fries, and mac and cheese. I mention all of this to give credence to the other yelp posts regarding the generous size of the orders. We started off with the appetizers of greens, mac and cheese and spinach. If the orders had come out all at the same time, we would not have had room on our table to accommodate it all. Fortunately, the meals came out in portions and we were able to eat each portion by the time the next part was brought to us. The greens had great flavor. Slightly salty and good subtle flavors. The mac and cheese had a wonderful caramelized cheese crust and was filled with melted cheese throughout every nook and cranny of the macaroni. It was a really superb mac and cheese. Sam was very generous and offered me one of his 4 pork chops. Did I mention that the portions were very generous? The crunchy batter contained a succulent piece of pork that was full of flavor. I simply picked it up with my hands and ate every bit of it. That same wonderfully light and crispy batter coats the chicken and was equally flavorful. We were able to devour most of the portions by the time Justin's and my fried oysters came out. They were also coated generously with the batter and deep fried. They oysters were cooked excellently. They were not over cooked and chewy at all. They came out nice and soft with a great crunchiness. This sort of place is like coming to a sit down family meal. I decided a few years ago that Nirvana is the state of being fat and happy simultaneously. The Hitching Post just brought me a step closer to ending the karmic cycle. A friend and I just shared a single half-chicken dinner of eight giant pieces of so-crispy-you-can-hear-the-crunch fried chicken, gibbous with magmatic chicken juice, with a side of corn-on-the-cob (a side being three ears of corn, slick with melted butter), richly soothing mac n' cheese with a toasted crunchy top, tender collard greens and hand-cut fries. I'm now wandering around looking like I'm in my third trimester. The total bill came to $23 for the two of us and we ended up taking home four pieces of chicken and a corn-on-the-cob. And we abandoned the other side dishes. It's on the end of a quiet residential block, a ramshackle townhouse that looks a little like it belongs to the crazy lady on the block (there's always one), with stacks of magazines on the table out front and christmas lights blinking away in the window. The dining room is long, narrow and woodpanelled, crowded with tchotchkes and lined with pink vinyl booths. The magic takes place behind the long bar, cluttered with sauce bottles and phonebooks and three giant microwaves. You can sense your food before it hits the table, hearing it in the sizzle of the fryer and the voluptuous smell of your mac n' cheese, wafting over as you sit there, stomach complaining, for the hour before your food arrives. I stopped by today. The Carters where super nice, very accommodating, very sweet, and they hooked us up. If you're a foodie with extremely discerning expectations, then this joint ain't for you! Take your highbrow tastes elsewhere because you won't understand the Hitchin' Post. This is straight up soul food from grandparents you wish you had. Crazy fried chicken, WAAAY ton of food with every order. The only thing they need is Cholula hot sauce, but I can deal regardless. It's awesome. I printed out the 30+ reviews you guys put here and gave the Carter's a copy for them to read. I think they were floored, they didn't expect so many nice things said about them. Finally made it to this Yelper's favorite. This neighborhood restaurant seems where locals hang out or come to pick up their takeouts. Nothing fancy, but feels warm and homey. I sat at the counter and ordered a bottle of bud ($4) and 'half fried chicken dinner' ($11). You choose two sides, and I went for potato salad and today's greens. There's basically one chef, who makes food one batch at a time, so it could take a while before you get your food. It took me over 30min. The greens were freshly made to order and delicious. A plate of fried chicken came out and I dug in. Pretty good, very nicely fried. Maybe a bit more seasoning would be good, but it left room for ketchup. Then another plate came out. What? 'Half chicken' has one thigh, two breasts, two wings and two drumsticks? I like this mutant chicken. I didn't even finish half and took the rest home. I thought I had done my homework. I knew it takes a while to get your food here... but well over an hour? I knew the portions were big, but this is ridiculous. I'll be eating fried chicken for the next week. I had to rescue the dining partner in crime when a metro mishap prevented him from getting out of the city. When I finally reached him at Dupont Circle, he said I could go anywhere I wanted for dinner as my reward. I settled on the Hitching Post as I've been wanting to come here for ages and just haven't found the right moment. Much has already been said about HP so I will not go into great detail, but I will say...Half fried chicken? Which half of the chicken yields 12 pieces? Holy Cow! Is it the best fried chicken I've ever tasted? Well... no. Is it the best fried chicken I've tasted in the DMV? Probably. Is there a better value for price paid? Absolutely not. Mr. and Mrs. Carter are delightful hosts and I urge you to sit at the counter so you can watch them work. The mac n cheese is very good but the homemade potato salad is GREAT. read more

Southern cookin' & Soul food for DC! Some years back I told a coworker that I missed southern style food and soul food... she took me here and WOW! Really down home like from Moms... from collards, chicken fried chicken to mac & cheese or just anything - it's gooood! Needless to say, I kept goin' back! I've never tried their desserts (I'm told there to die for) 'cause I've always been too full from the meal to have it. Highly recommended. The hospitality is great too! read more
