I am thankful for finding this on Yelp. The best soul food I've tasted in DC! Located in a residential neighborhood, the Hitching Post has a laid back, neighborhood feel. The staff is extremely friendly and approachable. We ordered the 5 pc wing dinner and fried catfish, both entrees came with 2 sides. I chose collard greens and mac n cheese. My entree was the fried catfish. The batter was light, not greasy, and perfectly seasoned. The catfish was juicy and flaky. The mac n cheese (not baked) was creamy and cheesy. The greens was perfectly salty and bitter. It was heaven! The order came with creamy and tangy tartar sauce and homemade hot sauce. I also had a bite of my friend's wing dinner and the seasoning was spot on! I snuck in a bit of the potato salad and it was equally delicious and authentic like the rest of the menu. Rarely do I provide a 4 star review after only one visit but Hitching Post won me over. For a Saturday afternoon lunch I dined on the catfish sandwich and a side of collard greens. The catfish was piping hot, made to order and the greens were yummy. Note to self, cornbread is not served w/your meal and is ala carte. I was tempted to go with the dinner portion but the lunch size was plenty and left me satisfied. On one side of the street is paid meter parking. On the opposite side is free street parking. Hitching Post is located on the corner of Upshur so you may pass it if you're not sure what to look for. A wooden deck, a few chairs and not so obvious signage point out its location. Shout out to Arlene who was very kind and patient and recommends coming during the week for their happy hour and renowned chicken. There is a bar on site, booth seating and weather permitting seating on the deck. They are able to accommodate groups but the interior isn't very large so a group of 15 could be pushing it. I was in need of some vegetables to fulfill my daily intake. It was almost 8:30 on a Sunday night. I was nearly 20 minutes away from places I searched, including Hitching Post. I looked at the menu and saw steamed broccoli. This wS all I needed to hustle slowly ( lol) across town. When I arrived, I called in a side order of collard greens and steamed broccoli, as I looked for parking. I entered the establishment and was personally greeted but a pleasant woman. Well to the main point, the food. The broccoli was perfect; not too soft/hard. There appeared to be a light sprinkle of red, and it seemed as if I tasted a hint of butter. I don't know. I just know the broccoli held most of its clean original flavor. On the other hand, the collards were seasoned. I was so glad it didn't seem to have the red pepper buds. Some people think that's what everyone wants on their greens. Well Sunday's night batch of collards did not. The seasoning was not overpowering and flavorful. Great location set in a quiet and leafy corner of Petworth, but I won't be going back after my first visit. Hands-down the worst restaurant/diner french fries I've ever had, mine were actually undercooked. I've had soggy fries like these before but I don't think I've ever had undercooked french fries. Also I asked for my hamburger medium well done and I got something that was so rare it was only room temperature, not even warm, and I'm not sure it would've been safe to eat the meat. I LOVE this place. It is my standby. Every single thing is good, but shrimp curry is my favorite. If fried chicken is your thing though, this is your place. Drinks are always a generous pour. So much better than any typical annoying DC spot trying too hard, it's the real deal. And no annoying and ridiculous surcharges like so many other places are adding these days. Service here is incredibly slow and the food isn't that great. It has the DC soul food vibe - where they THINK they are giving you soul food, but if you're actually from the south (like I am), you know what they are serving is just not it. In my whole 18 years of my life, I've never had such horrible service. I heard so many good things about this restaurant's food! Sadly I was never able to partake in it myself. I arrived at the restaurant with my mom around 4:00 pm and didn't get seated till 4:15 pm. We were left to sit outside without a menu or service for around 20 minutes. When our waiter came to take our order, she said it would be out shortly. I got water and waited for 15 minutes just to get my water. My mother's specialty drink took around 30 minutes to arrive. I know this may sound ridiculous and that we should've just left after being ignored for 15 minutes. But we waited 2 hours for food we never got. The table next to us arrived after us and got the same thing my mother did. Their food came to them first. At this point, it was raining, and I was running out of patients. I asked a different waitress if we could get our food to go because we were tired of waiting. The waitress comes back and tells us the boss thought we wanted to leave. So we did. Listen to me very carefully: Go. Now. The Hitching Post is a true throwback to the past. As soon as you walk in you're immediately cognizant of the fact that this isn't your typical diner/southern food restaurant. The three booths they have look like they came out of a club from the movie Scarface, the "bar" at the front is populated with tons of condiments and random food items that may or may not be used in conjunction with what they actually serve (a gallon bottle of Ocean Spray Grapefruit juice?), there are plant watering cans in the window sills (wut?) and the Remy Martin paper towel and straw holders on each table make you feel like you're a gangster from the 1970s (or in Grand Theft Auto, one of the two). The only way you'd know that it was 2008 outside is the Hi-Def LCD screen in the corner of the restaurant (we were watching College Football, more on that later). If you're in any sort of rush, don't bother coming, you'll end up leaving pissed off and hungry. In fact, I'd recommend arriving here when you're at that point where you say to yourself, "I'm not really hungry right now, but I will be in an hour" because that's about as long as it's gonna take to get your food. Blasphemy you say? Great food takes time and love, my friends. The good news is, while you're waiting, you'll have time to talk to the locals; the people that have been coming here since 1967. They had college football on TV and the older guys started on about "Back in 1951, when Dick Kazmaier won the Heisman for the first time for Princeton...." We jump in the conversation and it's as if we had all been coming to Hitching Post for 30 years. We informed them this was our first time here and they went on and on about the food. The fried chicken, the pork chops, the hamburger; they loved it all, and with good reason. The wife/server said to us, "you know, we've seen a lot more young people 'round here recently... I think it's this internet or something..." Haha, precious. I told her that's exactly how we found out about her restaurant; "the internet" is singing her praises I exclaimed. On to the food. There were three of us there and we ordered two Half Chickens. This is a bit misleading, as I'm pretty sure our two Half Chickens were more like 8 whole chickens. The chicken came out on four large dinner plates, piled high with crispy fried goodness. A Half Chicken is enough to fill three normal sized people (we took home about 5 extra pieces of chicken to some friends). Also, as a note, if you go, I'd get the Half Chicken Dinner and not the wings, you're gonna want to eat the thigh and breast pieces, trust me. This is the best fried chicken I've ever had. Granted, I didn't grow up in "the south" (no, MD is not the south), but this chicken was unreal; crispy outside with great spice, juicy on the inside, fresh as fresh can come. This is why it takes so long to get your food, it's battered and fried fresh right when you order it. The sides were fantastic, and I can honestly say the potato salad was a life changing experience. I'm not a big fan of potato salad but this was by far the best I've ever had, a must order. The mac and cheese was delicious, with a nice crispy top that you could cut with a knife. The collard greens were fantastic, not the normal uber dark chopped up stuff that usually gets served around here (I just wish it had actual bits of pork in it, but aside from that it's delicious). The cole slaw was just the way I like it, sweet, tons of sauce, not minced but not too big either. Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I can't wait to go back to watch some college football, drink beer and politic with the locals, and eat some scrumptious food. It'll be nearly impossible to not order the fried chicken but the way the old timers were talking about the hamburger and pork chops I may just have to branch out. They also have homemade honey baked ham on the menu *drool* Lastly, I asked the husband/cook which dessert we should order to take home with us and he said "none, it's all store bought..." Just FYI. One final note, my friend Brian who isn't a big fan of the internet (or computers in general) told me to "tell all the internet people that this place is the shit and they should go peep it." It's unbelievably apropos that Hitching Post would be my 666th review. 666...the number of the beast...the number of the freak penta-winged, triple-breasted, growth hormone-injected half chicken beast that exists at the Hitching Post. I had the pleasure of brunching tushy to tushy in a booth with (clockwise) Michael H., Karman L., Andrew W., Kevin L., the brunch babe herself Alicia G., (me) and Katie F. I split the half chicken with Karman with mac n cheese and fries for sides. Of 7 of us, there were 4 HALF chicken meals ordered and somehow the food would not stopping coming and we had what could only have been 5 full chickens and assorted extra chicken parts all around...like a sick chicken orgy (this one's for you, Lester K.!). It was an experience of pleasure and pain. I heart fried chicken in moderation so I have my limits to intake. The chicken was so juicy and the skin so crispy. I had a meaty breast and then a large drumstick. I couldn't get through that last wing. I tried to summon the power of Grayskull but that didn't work. I shook my fist and cried, "Su K.!!! Jeff W.!!! You should have been here to help us eat all this!!! Or at least shamed me into eating more!". The highlight for me was the big ass bowl of mac n cheese and how buttery and cheesy it was. So I think I'm still stuffed from the lunch I had on Saturday, 6 days ago. The food here is by no means 5 star food, but what they do they do with extreme excess to a level I have not seen in a long time. The sheer amount of food is simply overwhelming. I suggest if you're coming with 2 or more people you carefully read all the recent reviews and take note of Alicia's photos. This is no joke, 1 single $12 chicken plate can EASILY feed 2 people. The chicken was great, lightly breaded and good quality. The fried oysters were just ok, but considering they are double the chicken in price I would not recommend them. The macaroni was awesome. The fries were kind of subpar, and it seemed like they were prepared in some odd half-fried half-baked combination (combined with the oysters this is a half star deduction). The corn was delicious and loaded with butter. Nicole loved her baked potato as well, and she said the sour cream was way better than any kind you can get in the store. It takes a while to get your food, no doubt about that. Granted we did all converge at the place at one time, but still it's hard to imagine anywhere just having 1 person do all the cooking for an entire restaurant, regardless of the size. It felt more like we were guests at their house, without the comfort of sitting back in a recliner. I actually asked to get a BLT too (I was feeling a bit sadistic), but the lady told me it was just too complicated and ended it with a Ted Stevens-like NO. Sorry, if it's on the menu you should be able to make it, I don't care how many people are there, thus the other half star deduction. It also took about 10 minutes just to get a Coke, and even though I finished it about halfway through I was never offered another. What Real Fried Chicken and Sweet Tea in NW DC? Did I hear that right??? Thanks to super Yelper Alicia G, I had the chance to (finally) try out Hitching Post restaurant this past Sunday. And was I a happy man after that :) We got there at noon and did not leave until after 2:30 PM! This is a real hole in the wall place in the middle of residences in NW DC. Been there since the 60s and is run by the same couple who started it! The place is really small and is frequented by mostly regulars. The ambiance is stuck in the 60s and thats what makes it special. You are taken care by the owners - husband is the busy chef while the wife takes care of the guests. I'm sure she was overwhelmed on seeing 19 hungry Yelpers descend at her restaurant that Sunday afternoon. But she did not miss a stride in taking care of us. First the bad stuff - Service was SLOOOW - this place is not made for that kind of crowd. If you want fast service go to KFC or Popeyes. If you want good Southern cooking and hospitality, you are at the right place then :) She also mixed up our orders with other Yelpers - which ended up being good as there was no place in my stomach to eat more food! Now the good stuff: Sweet tea was Sweet Tea - as its supposed to be made - sweet and fresh! Now I wont have to travel South of the border (VA) to get real good Sweet Tea! We had Mac N Cheese, Fries, Potatoes for side dish and Chicken Wings for round one. main course never arrived so no review for that. Mac N Cheese - I have history with Mac N Cheese - growing up in India, there is no Mac N Cheese. I came to know of this American obsession when I got off the boat in NYC in 1997! But I have heard of horror stories of bad Mac N Cheese that comes out of the box or if it not done right. So I have waited for Mac N Cheese for the past 12 years! And what a place to lose my virginity (for Mac N Cheese) than at Hitching Post! I'm sure the calories were thru the roof, but man did it taste good! You can take that to the bank my friend! We were scraping the sides for some more :) Potatoes and Fries - good sides but not comparable to Mac N Cheese. Chicken Wings - there are wings and then there are Wings! I don't know where these guys get there chicken from but these wings were HUGE! The batter was delicious and just perfect. The oil used was good too - no after taste of old oil. 3 of us guys shared one order and were full after the wings and 3 sides! It came out to $15 per person including a generous tip that the restaurant deserved! I adore this place. From the friendly owners, Alvin and Adrienne, to the roomy booths (5 in total) and long bar, Hitching Post takes the top spot for comfort food in my heart. Alvin and Adrienne are both so sweet; Adrienne even gave me a hug before we left! Hands down the best fried chicken, mac and cheese and greens in this city. You can taste the love in each bite of golden chicken, fried fresh to order. Other carnies will appreciate the sound of the fryer in the background while waiting for your chicken and other fried goodies to arrive. Though, if you bite too soon, you may be shouting out, "Hot! ... Hot!...HOOOT!" like a few yelpers at my table. (Mostly just Kevin though.) My table ordered 4 orders of the half chicken dinner, each with 2 sides. Everyone got mac and cheese which was creamy, cheesy, buttery and amazing. (This also burnt Kevin's tongue as he dove in after rushing me to take the obligatory photos.) Kevin and I were sharing partners so our other side was potato salad. After reading all about this place on Yelp, I decided to check it out. The food looked delicious upon arrival. I took a bite of everything and was pleased. Then another bite into my chicken breast and it was raw. I sat it aside and went to a different piece, also raw inside. A third piece, a drumstick. I tore a piece of skin off and bloody bone marrow began oozing onto the plate. I moved the chicken away, finished the sides, and asked for the check. I didn't need a to go bag, of course. So after all the hype surrounding the hitching post, i think i might have had unrealistic expectations. I expected to just be wowed and in shock of how amazing the food was. And i really wasn't. Dont get me wrong, it was fantastic, just not life changing (except for increasing my cholesterol level exponentially) I dont understand how nine pieces of chicken is only half a chicken (especially since ours had three legs!) but whatever. It was definitely a good deal! 1195 for half a chicken plus two sides??? Can't beat that. I really liked how moist the chicken was and how crispy the frying was. I dont know what they do to those chickens, but they definitely do it right. Its worth the 20-30 minute wait. And now this mashed potato lover was highly disappointed in the fact that the restaurant does not have mashed potatoes. I mean come on! Its a fried chicken restaurant.. mashed potatoes go hand in hand with fried chicken! I did enjoy the mac and cheese but was completely wowed by the potato salad. It was amazing. Hitching Post is unassuming from the outside, when I drove up I thought this place on the corner of the street was someone's home instead of a restaurant. This all falls in line with their Southern down home charm. There is no private parking lot, so circle around a few times for street parking. Inside is just as unassuming as outside, place is not very big with a bar area and separate area also in house dining. I ordered take-out so I didn't get to fully experience the in-dining aspect. I did get a chance to sit at the bar while I waited and have a drink. They have daily happy hour which is always a plus. Staff is friendly, bartender made a strong drink and host was welcoming and enthusiastic. I ordered the fried chicken entree that comes with two sides. Chicken is one of their staples and they do it well. The portion size is plenty, as they offer a half chicken, breast, thigh, leg and wing. Chicken was almost perfect. All pieces were well seasoned and fried perfectly. One tiny issue was some of the breast meat was slightly dry, not choke dry but just not as juicy as other pieces. Sides were both forgettable, mashed potatoes were bland and broccoli was also under seasoned and just kind of there. The fact the sides weren't up to par left me a bit disappointed. Had the spaghetti, collard greens, and broccoli on a quiet weekday evening. Happy to report I didn't have to wait forty minutes as is typical on a busy weekend evening. Broccoli and greens were outstanding. One long stem of broccoli with a gracious dollop of butter on top. Easily chopped with a fork, assisted with a butter knife. Collard greens were terrific with a dash of salt and pepper. Spaghetti was much less inspiring. Sauce was a runny soup and the noodles were the cafeteria variety. Still, it worked just fine with the spicy sausage. Not a fan of the fried chicken, but the spaghetti is decent when paired with the sides. I'm a big eater and I was served enough food for two people. We ordered the half fried chicken dinner and we got collard greens and macaroni and cheese for the sides. This is not fast food my friends. It took around 35 minutes from ordering to being served. It was worth it. The chicken is fried perfectly where the skin is nice and crisp but not greasy. The breading has ranch in it and when I took my first bite I thought about cool ranch Doritos. How awesome would that be to make ranch flavored chicken skin snacks? The macaroni and cheese is sub par. It wasn't cheesy at all, the macaroni was soggy and it was old. You know how cranberry jelly from the can looks like when you pour it out of the can? Well, the mac and cheese was apparently in a to go container and they poured it out on an eat-in dish for us. It was perfectly shaped like the previous container. I wouldn't recommend this dish. The collard greens were excellent. It wasn't bitter at all and the pork flavor was subtle and slow cooked to perfection. I think this is the best collard greens I've had in DC. This was a huge meal for 15 bucks. We went to Hitching Post a little while back but I'm.pretty sure things don't change there all that fast. We sat inside to enjoy the A/C. Had a really nice waitress who kept checking in. I had decided to take the rest of the day off so I started downing some Cosmopolitans which were a drink special. I had seen the mention of fried chicken so I ordered that knowing it takes 20 minutes. The Colonel had steak and the Sprossling had catfish..there was so much food what with sides and all we just made a separate combo platter out of it for Klink who was joining us on his way home from the airport. Fried chicken is still admirable, collard greens perfect, mac&cheese like it sposed to be. New stuff: Calamari perfectly fried (I'll blame the chewiness on the individual squid), mango shrimp SPICY ("habañero" in the description is a warning to be taken seriously). I went to this place due to all of the great yelp reviews.... and I'm really sorry to say that I didn't have as great of an experience there. I ordered the fried 1/2 chicken with mac & cheese and greens and to be honest, NOTHING was seasoned well. True, the portion size was HUGE, but it really could have been seasoned better. When our waitress asked us did we want a box to take our chicken (at least 3 untouched pieces) home, we told her we'd pass. Now, considering all of the phenomenal reviews about the chicken, my guess is that this was just a day where the cook and/or the seasoning was off.... But this CLEARLY was not the best fried chicken I ever had... But again, I don't think that everyone else is wrong (b/c there are too many great reviews), I just think I may have gone on a day where things were a little off. Outstanding! Wonderful neighborhood restaurant in Petworth. So good we came back the next night. Calamari and fried pickles for appetizers. Looking for real Southern Fried Chicken and had not eaten here in over 20 years. Place is proof you can slide on a Washington Post review for years without maintaining your game! I paid over $50 for 5 sad, soggy, overcooked pieces of chicken and a couple of sides. I reached out to them politely on social media and let them know the chicken was bad, real bad. The response was FU and a bunch more personal insults. Really. I would give this place a HARD Pass. Reputation is yesterday but a good meal is today! read more
