This morning at around 11am I was eager to try a brunch spot close to the area I was at and a place I've never eaten at before. The Huddle came up on my Yelp app as being the closest one with a decent amount of stars. I read the restaurant was a small mom and pop type of place and that the food was great, amazing, etc. Okay, I'm convinced so I thought that I better try it! Upon arrival, I notice this place was like an old school little diner with a small town feel. I thought it was odd this type of establishment was located in the area it was in. It looked and felt like it would belong in the Santee/Mission Gorge area reminiscent of the old location of where Mary's Donuts was located. They had some interesting classic pictures on their walls. The individuals working there all seemed depressed, mad, or had a feeling of they just had to be there because they didn't have a choice. Did everyone forget their coffee this morning? The vibe wasn't very welcoming. As I peruse the menu, the stuffed Cinnamon French toast for 9.75 caught my eye. My sons were with me and one ordered the waffle with whipped cream and strawberries and the other ordered some type of omelet. The food didn't take too long to come but when I saw my French toast it looked like something that was rushed to make. The bread inside was dry. By the time I get to the "stuffing" part I asked the waitress what kind of stuffing was in there. She said it was blended cream cheese with pecans in it. Sounds good, right? Eh.. The waffle my son had looked decent and my other son's omelet looked okay, I guess. I really wanted to like this place. I tried but I couldn't. I'm going to be fair here...they have GREAT chicken and waffles as well as milkshakes and I LOVE that they give back to the community! However, I have a bone to pick with them about their mashed potatoes. I notice there were chunks in them and they tasted plastic-y and artificial. There were no potato skins to be found. I like skins in my mashed potatoes because that way you can tell they're actual, you know, POTATOES! The same way I like pulpy lemonade because that way I can tell it's real and not lemon flavored sugar water. The texture was kind of funny. I asked the server, "Excuse me, but are these boxed instant mashed potatoes or do you mash actual potatoes here?" The waitress responded, "Of course they're boxed instant mashed potatoes. It's a diner. What did you expect?" So...because it's a diner that means that you can't have fresh, quality food?! What kind of lame excuse is that?! One of my favorite restaurants of all time, The Chicken Pie Diner (RIP!) used REAL mashed potatoes, real mac and cheese (not Kraft) and lemonade made from nothing but water, lemon juice and white sugar. And yes, they were a diner!! Also, mashed potatoes have got to be the SIMPLEST thing to make ever! You just boil potatoes and add milk and butter. PS: Before you make any assumptions about me, I'm about as far from being high maintenance as a human can get, and I'm NOT a fan of 5 star dining establishments. Nice little diner with traditional breakfast and lunch. Very friendly service. Accommodated me, my wife and 4 kids no problem. Food was delicious, first time we go out and all 4 kids finished all their food! The jams for the toast are made in house. We purchased 2 jars to take home, orange marmalade and strawberry rhubarb. First of all. The food is not meant to be eaten. It's equivalent to dog food. The place seemed as if it was a senior community service, rather than a restaurant. Very old. The table cloths were dirty and sticky. The food was all over the place in the kitchen which doesn't look appealing. The only decent thing about this place was its service, quick & friendly waitress. YAY! came here about a year and a half ago. I was in San Diego for 3 days and before I left I wanted to have breakfast and found this little gem of a place. I got the chicken and waffles..... soooo soo good. I gotta say it was the best chic & waffles I've ever had and they really put a lot of effort into plating their food and what not. The Mission Hills neighborhood has had this eatery around for nearly over 30 years and it's a go spot for some local diner-style breakfast and lunch. They open early at the crack of down at around 530 am in the morning for breakfast, so early people like me can get in before the parking out on the street dries up. The inside of the restaurant is quite small with the grill directly behind the front counter, which gives it a very up and close atmosphere of dining. There are some tables outside if you prefer outdoors, they're directly on the sidewalk. What caught my eye was their bakery menu which features both a cinnamon roll and a pecan roll. It's kind of hard to pass up sweets in the morning with your coffee. The coffee here isn't anything particularly special, but it was brewed good and fresh. I ordered the basic two egg cheddar omelet with some avocado added to the order. You're given the option of a side with either potatoes or refried beans along with a bread option. The omelet came out relatively fast and was handed to me by the cook behind the counter. The waitress was right though, it's a bit big for one person to finish on their own, so I was only able to eat half of it. You might want to just grab one to go for home and warm it up yourself. So at the Huddle, you're looking too spend about $10 for a basic breakfast here. Everyone in the comments say this place is very greasy spoon like, but I really didn't think my omelet was overly greasy at all really. Everything was cooked very well and the beans had great flavor to them. Their pecan rolls are definitely something everyone should give a try; I also heard that the cinnamon rolls are just as good. If you want a standard ho-hum breakfast with not a lot of foo foo ingredients or stalks of garnish decorating your omelet, a menu of items that are hard to pronounce then head on over to The Huddle. The Huddle is casual and is decorated with a parade of local nostalgia hanging on the walls. The setup of two dining areas that are separated by a prep kitchen makes the place awkward but surprisingly cool. There are three reasons why I rated The Huddle two stars (and I'm being generous). First, the value. When it comes to value you'd expect a place like The Huddle to be relatively inexpensive for its offerings; its not. In fact, The Mission in Normal Heights or the Broken Yolk in PB have lower prices - and tastes better. Second, the homemade jellies and preserves that are purportedly The Huddle's specialty had hair in it. After watching the movie "Waiting", your imagination can lead to some disgusting conclusions about how that hair got there. Need I say more about that? Lastly, and the chief complaint for my grief, is the food delivery time. Its outrageous. The Huddle can really test your patience to the point that you develop rigor mortis in your ass from sitting on those rotating bar stools too long. If you have a lot of free time to wait and watch your meal prepared in slow motion by a cook who resembles an androgynous version of Andre the Giant, then this place may do it for you. Otherwise, you're going to be frustrated - like I was - waiting 30 minutes or more just for something as simple as eggs prepared sunny side and two links. It's one of those WTF moments. Continuing on my diatribe, I could understand if the place was jam packed and orders piled up, but when we got there, a lot of people were already finishing up their meals and paying, not ordering. To be fair, the rest of the staff was innocent. I dont blame the waitresses for the bad experience. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. I felt sorry for her because she had to endure my laser like stare darting back and forth between her and the contents on the griddle while I imagined etching the year "2012" deep into the bar's tabletop with my dull butter knife to warn future patrons that it might take 4 years to get your damn meal. If there is anyone to blame, its the cook. That lady "cook" manning the griddle doesn't have a sense of prompt customer delivery. Believe me, I'm in no rush, but it was just too long. She moves like she's cooking for herself after she has eaten already. read more

Ordered take out this morning and our food was quick. Everything was delicious and my one year old loved his pancakes. Salsa, jam and apple butter all made in house yet when he poured my orange juice it came from a store bought jug. So the husband took yesterday off to spend my birthday with me. I'm funny about birthdays - I think everyone should celebrate them, especially if the birthday in question is mine. We strolled up to The Huddle for breakfast because it's in our new 'hood and I've been reading some good things about the jam. Good jam is important - a breakfast joint loses a lot of points in my estimation when they had me one of those weak plastic packets with day-glo red "razzberry" crap. Anyhoo, we rolled in to this unassuming little place around 10am on a Friday and the place was pretty packed with locals and older folks - the kind of people who've probably been eating here since the mid fifties. I totally dig the elevated counter and the old movie star photos, and the food was great - huge portions, fresh off the griddle (mmm blueberry pancakes) and the aforementioned jams were fantastic. Strawberry-rhubarb? Yes please! Bottomless coffee? Why not? Sassy conversation from the dude running plates? Nothing better! $23 breakfast for two and starting off my day with a smile? We stumbled upon this little hole in the wall place. So famished, decided to come here and see how it was. At first, I was a little scared to enter since it isn't very inviting. We were greeted right away. The have a nice extensive menu, a lot to choose from. I wanted something simple nothing crazy, the McHuddle. Very similar to a McMuffin at McDonalds. I enjoyed it very much. The bacon was super crispy. In addition to the sandwich, it comes with a side of Ruffle chips. Excellent breakfast sandwich. My friend had the corn beef hash with eggs. I had a taste of the corn beef hash and it was bomb. Crispy, but you still can taste the corn beef. Delicious. Service was great, it felt like an at home diner. This place is not in the main area of SD, but if you happen to be in the area for errands and want some breakfast, The Huddle is a great choice. -Give it a try! They know how to cook scrambled eggs so perfectly here, it is a pleasure to have a real comfort breakfast here. But what is really fabulous here is the homemade Pecan Roll, which they can serve warm or hot for you. It is just incredible. Before having this here I have never really liked Cinnamon Buns or the like, because they are always too sweet and syrup, and usually have no depth of flavor. But the Pecan Roll here is so deep tasting, and loaded with these delicious treats that you will marvel how wonderful it is. read more

Sort of stumbled upon this place on accident when another breakfast place was closed. Sort of looks like it was plucked out of the Midwest from the 50's and transported here to Mission Hills. It has that classic dinner vibe where most of the people are eating at the counter. The place is quite small, so your feet away from where the cooks are frying up your eggs and hash browns. I had the Corn Beef Hash and Eggs. The Hash was a little burnt but it kind of added to the flavor. Server kept my coffee full at all times. I've always seen this place, a little store front, tucked away on Goldfinch,right across from Phil's Barbecue. But I had always let it slip my mind. Until today. I get a call from Keen-tone 9am. He is back from Germany finally and wants to nosh something fierce. Something other than the bland German food he had been subjected to for the past week. He suggests the Mission but I'm not to keen on it. I want something new and suggest this place. So glad I did. It was good homecooking that made me feel at home. This place runs a non-profit soup kitchen for the homeless after hours, so I feel good about giving this place my money rather than some kitsy new-age hippy joint. Ruth also founded Special Delivery, a service that delivers meals to people with chronic diseases and their families. The waiter was a doll. He filled Keen-tone's OJ up with the jug all the while saying: "I'm gonna treat you like you were sitting at the kitchen table at my home." He suggested the special which was a veggie omlette, house fries, and toast. Yum. They have locally made jams on the table, even apple butter from Julian. I got this massive breakfast and a cup of coffee for under 8 bucks. And I helped a non-profit by stuffing my face. My work here is done. read more

A trip back to my old home town of San Diego would never be complete without a trip to the huddle, a.k.a. the cuddle. This place is the most non-pretentious diner with delicious food that is beyond what you ever could have expected when you walked in. It's like sitting in your grammy's kitchen while she makes you fluffy blueberry pancakes, like literally there is a refrigerator covered in magnets behind the counter. I love this place. Also, crab cakes benedict, do it, It'll be worth your while. Just thinking about this place is making me a little teary-eyed and missing San Diego, it feels like home to me. And, they have a frequent diner card so you can get a free meal after 10 meals, not that its not affordable otherwise. I've been eating at the huddle for years, and I want to give it a five star based on the amount of good that they do for the community, but I'm a realist, so keeping it a four stars. First off, it's no frills at this small diner. So if you want to pay for ambiance and air-conditioning, head next door or across the street. Food service is a little slow, so don't be in a hurry. They've got one burner, two cooks, and all kinds of options on the menu, so take the time to talk to the sincere and salt-of-the-earth human beings who run and occupy this restaurant. The food is great. I'll have to admit that I really only eat one or two things here: chorizo with hash browns or French toast...okay also the breakfast sandwich. I love it all. Coffee is solid and they keep the cup full. Like I said, what they do in and for the community is what you are paying for. With the proceeds, the family that owns this restaurant has run a special food and goods delivery service for local people with limited mobility due to illnesses such as aids and cancer. read more

My daughter has been telling us about this place for EVER and we finally had a chance to go there last Sunday. We had to wait a bit being a party of 5 but it was pleasant weather and the people were very nice too. The inside is small and every table was full so when one opened up on the sidewalk we snagged it! The waitress took our order, prices were a bit high but the fare was worth every penny in our opinion! BUT . . . the sodas are canned so there are no refills guys, be careful how you drink them while waiting. I had the omelette, fresh spinach and bacon, YUMMY!! Youngest daughter had cheeseburger, hubby had the pancakes with blueberries. It was all good!! The burger was juicy, the pancakes were fluffy and the omelette was GREAT! My older daughter's BF had the crab cakes benedict and i tried some . . . DEEElicious! We love the area of Mission Hills and traveled over to Hillcrest for a trip to the Buffalo Exchange and a lemonade at the Which-wich. My friends and I did some volunteer work next door (Special Delivery) and decided to support the Huddle since they are doing such great things for their community. The Huddle truly is a community diner where each person working there knows the neighborhood. It's a tad small on the inside, but there are adequate seating for one or a group of eight. I love how they have a wall dedicated to pictures of Hollywood actors and actresses from the past. The selection is American and there are the usually fare of Omelets, Burgers and Sandwiches. I got myself a cheeseburger with fries and lemonade. The meat was fully cooked, but it wasn't dry at all. Fries were pretty much frozen, but cooked well to a golden crisp. I had a little taste of a friend's Fish and Chips and the fish was flaky and piping hot. I volunteered next door to the Huddle for four mornings and didn't get the chance to dine in until the very last day. Even so, I can feel that this place isn't just about the food that makes it a great place to eat, but the friendliness of the staff and the tight knit sense of community makes it feel like you're eating in a familiar, comfortable place. read more

Does friendly service intimidate you? Or, how about seventies green walls and a view to a chef (sans tall white paper hats)? Is it going to leave you're wallet empty and devoid of crisp green cash? Will it satisfy your early morning rumblings or cure a particularly nasty hangover? All fair questions, to be sure. After a breakfast tour at the Huddle, you'll find that a bit if cabbage will still reside within the lonely confines of your well worn wallet. Fourteen dollar breakfast be damned. Additionally, you're hunger will have have gleefully subsided back to whence it came, and your hangover will have become a broken down beast, no longer straining at the reins of your upper gag reflex. That said, you're headache will most likely remain stubbornly intact. Glee! But what to order? Shit fire and save the matches, man! Eggs and bacon done proper. Hash browns, homemade jam on a toasted english muffin, damned decent waffles with strawberries and whipped cream, homemade shakes, and did I mention crisp corned beef hash? The Huddle is never going to blow you away with some haughty nouveau riche plate that completely underwhelms your pallet and cost you much more than it's could possible be worth. You won't even have to wait in a painful line sweating in the sun in order to dine at The Huddle. Damn fashionable food to hell, I say. I am all in for comfortable food becoming a never-ending endeavor. I like the Huddle. I will continue to enjoy its honestly priced, happily served breakfast plates. I will wander in at least once a week and eat with stern determination and extreme prejudice. My guess is, you'd do the same if you tried it. I had Frozen Batter-Fish and Frozen Fries Thoroughly Thawed in Fryolator. N-C had Seemingly Sysco Crabcake Benedict with More-or-Less Flavorless Sauce. This place is simple, and it's not trying to be anything other than. I feel like this place was picked up from Small-Town, USA and dropped right into Mission Hills.The staff is so nice and accommodating; they seem to really care about your hung-over ass while they bring you lots of water and delicious foods. I usually go with my breakfast standard: 2 eggs over-medium, bacon, hash browns, and sourdough toast. It's always cooked perfectly, and is always tasty. One time, I ordered my usual, and the waitress brought out my plate and immediately said "the cook said he still owes you 2 pieces of bacon." Being much like the explorer Cabrillo, I skipped the hotel breakfast and headed out on Friday morning to The Huddle. The other reviews are not lying: everyone in that place is a known quantity since they've been going for what seemed like decades. The waitstaff called out arriving patrons by name, the line cook bantered with the diners, and the host/owner shuttled heaping plates and coffee. Political discussion easily mixed with the breakfast plates. The place is homey - in a good way! Yes, there is no pretension. Yes, there is no "fusion" or frou-frou breakfast. All of which makes a great place when you're just starting your day - who needs hassle first thing in the morning? Had the daily special as announced by the baritone waiter. For a newcomer, he offered me a cheery hello and described the special: two eggs, sausage or ham, hash browns or home fries, and toast for $6. A good deal. Coupled with unlimited Folgers, a truly lovely meal. I guess its the place but within 10 minutes it had me. A later arriving couple, obviously not regulars, came in and I felt that they were intruding on MY place. Meaning, you're not going to wait an hour for a table, your food is not going to have sprigs of rosemary coming out of it, there's no Bloody Mary, and the portions are going to be filling, but you probably won't have leftovers, and probably only one choice of syrup for your pancakes. The type of food offered at the Huddle is more along the lines of simple and good. I recommend the orange pecan or sweet potato pancakes. Our breakfast was not only delicious but get this.....The Food was Hot! I don't know how many times I've been to a restaurant and been disappointed because the food delivered to our table was "warm" At The Huddle our food was delivered Hot Off the Grill by our very friendly waiter, Cory, who not only greeted us with a friendly smile but was quick to take our drink order and Crack a few jokes with us. The menu here is typical Americana Diner but Do not for a second think of it as a so called "greasy spoon" The Huddle is Anything but. The food is Really Tasty and far from the type of food one normally gets from this style of diner. I had the Corned Beef Hash with two eggs and hashies and as I said before it arrived at the table Steaming and cooked to perfection. I hate it when you ask for your eggs to be cooked "over medium" and you get served a hard broken yolk or worse a runny messy inedible clump. These over medium eggs were excellent. The hash browns and Corned Beef were probably the best I've had in quite some time if not ever. After a VERY early family drop off at the airport, Husband and I were wandering the streets of San Diego at 6:45 a.m. on a Monday morning, sleepy and in search of breakfast before heading to work. I'm picky in that I don't like chain diners (I'm looking at you, Denny's) or bagel spots (same, Einstein's). I stumbled upon The Huddle on Yelp and we decided to check it out. It's an older diner and has almost a midwest feel to it (or at least what I think would be a midwest feel -- amiable and cozy). The first thing that I noticed were the regulars at the counter. One was leaving when we came in and another was just chilling, reading an actual full-size newspaper (I haven't seen that in a long time!). Regulars are usually a good sign. I ordered the chorizo and eggs and Husband had a ham and egg deal. I was impressed -- our waitress also whipped up the food. She took orders in one hand and essentially cooked with the other. My chorizo and eggs were actually pretty good; the best I've had in awhile in a restaurant. The tortillas were so-so but I ended up eating most of the chorizo and eggs. The coffee was just coffee but hit the spot. Husband's plate came with toast and they make, if I remember correctly, in-house jam. I believe that we tried the apple butter jam - holy crap, it was delicious!!! I stole his second piece of toast for myself. As we were waiting for the food, I read the restaurant's history on the menu; apparently, it's family owned and operated for several decades. I have a sneaking suspicion that our waitress/chef/cashier was the original owner's daughter (same name, at least). She was friendly, attentive, and we had our food within 15 minutes or so. I'm only giving this three stars because I really wasn't that impressed when I first went there. And as I drove by it last week, I wondered why I had bookmarked it when I had been there over a year ago. I must have blocked it out of my memory because there was a raging annoying douchebag with us. The place is ADORABLE. They have a map on the wall when you walk in, and you can put a push pin on the city you were born in, or something like that, it was so long ago. The place was PACKED, which should have told me something. We got sat in the back, like way back behind the kitchen in this room that reminded you of your grandmother's kitchen with it's pastel yellow walls and fake white shutters. Since I had never heard of Yelp back then, I didn't look up The Huddle to see what to eat. Big mistake. I had some awful omlette. Looking back, it may not have been that awful, but that DJ Douchbag (DJDB for short, for those of you who know my lingo) really made it awful. I wanted out of there and out of his company more desparately than I wanted to go fishing for boys, that's saying a lot! So, I've decided that I need to go back and get Eggs Benedict. Super cute and welcoming! Love the old fashion diner feel. The food is exactly what I hoped for, yummy! Just sad it closes so early. Wish it was open into the evening. A must go! read more

Awful Breakfast! I went here about a year ago, and walked out with an upset stomach. I ordered the chicken fried steak as I love greasy breakfast items, and almost threw up. First off, it wasn't even steak! It was hamburger meat, gravy was bland and toast was soggy. Will never go back... read more
