Now we are talking. This is my favorite breakfast spot in San Diego. It isn't much to look at, but then get over yourself and enjoy good food. They have apple butter! Not enough places have that out for you. Their hollandaise sauce is divine. They do so many different variations on the classic eggs benedict. You can't go wrong. You just can't... unless you hate poached eggs and/or hollandaise sauce. We had our puppy with us so our options were limited, we could only choose somewhere with outdoor dining! So we strolled on up and sat down at the Huddle for a late breakfast! The guy who initially came and took our drink orders was amazing. He chatted with us for 10 minutes about where we were from, and what we were visiting the area for. It was so nice. Then our server came and she was very dry. She just wanted to get our order and get inside in the warmth. I ordered a hot chocolate and the thing was massive with a tower of whipped cream! I was in heaven.. although a fly later flew into the chocolate part and ruined my hot chocolate appetite. Lol. The cool thing about the huddle is you can order dinner food whenever you want, and breakfast whenever you want. This works well cuz I don't always like a huge breakfast. It doesn't sit well in my stomach all day, but my hubby loves breakfast foods! I ordered a Cobb salad because the description on the menu sounded good, and he ordered a chicken fried steak, with eggs, and hash! The Cobb salad definitely pleased my taste buds, but my husband was not impressed with his chicken fried steak. The menu didn't say that it was a chicken fried steak burger. Our family stopped here yesterday on our way out of San Diego to have breakfast, and we're very happy that we did. We received very personable service from the owner as soon as we walked in. We enjoyed our food immensely: corned beef hash, the Tuesday french toast breakfast special, a 2-egg/bacon/hash browns breakfast, and 2 pieces of french toast with cinnamon roll cream cheese spread. Everything was good! We cleaned our plates. The ambiance is simply a counter-service diner with a few tables as well as some outdoor seating. I like that the ambiance doesn't take away from the star of the show, which is the down-home cooking served up by very friendly folks! The Huddle is a classic greasy spoon diner. Small and not fancy, there is a bar to sit at, and they also have tables for two to a party of four (inside and street seating). They have all the essentials - friendly service, reasonable prices, killer breakfast and, a really solid chicken and waffle. The restaurant is covered with signed black and white photos of celebrities, most of which i couldn't tell who they were, but you know they are classics. They have everything from pancakes, eggs benedict, and Mexican options. Turn around is quick and they have these tasty jellies to pair with your pancakes or toast (about six flavors i had the last time). Great place to go if you want some place that won't cost you a lot for breakfast, and also won't take a whole day for seating. read more

If you're in the mood for a more traditional American style breakfast, this is the place to go! When I walked in, I felt like I was transported back in time. Really had that old school diner feel. Not 50's diner feel, more like 30's - 40's feel. The place is a bit small, has a few tables in the main dining area, few tables outside, a back room pass the kitchen with more seats and of course counter seating. We decided to sit on the counter and that gave us a chance to talk to Corey, he seemed to help run the place and watch the cooks do their thing. I decided to order the crab cake Benny with home fries and the hubby ordered Corn beef hash and eggs. This was one of the most delicious breakfasts I have had in a long time. My Benny was rich with the hollandaise sauce, with a well seasoned crab cake, perfectly cooked poached eggs on top of a crispy English muffin. The home fries, were crispy, but I absolutely love them that way. My meal was pretty close to perfect! Hubby's corn beef hash was just as yummy too. Corn beef hash had enough crisp to it, kinda like how mom would make it, and crispy hash browns. Just writing this review, is making me want to go back tomorrow! The home made jams was truly plate licking delicious! I don't like to fill up on bread too much, but I found myself eating my toast just so I can eat the jams. All 3 jams, strawberry rhubarb, apple butter and the orange marmalade are all equally delicious. This place has a lot of regular customers and they can get busy very quickly, at least for breakfast when I came. I gave this place 4 stars because the wait for our food was a bit long. I don't very often give 1 star reviews. And let me be clear, this review is based only on the sandwich I had at lunch. I've never been there for breakfast, but I hear it's amazing. When we sat down for lunch, I asked the waitress what the best sandwich on the menu was. She told me she loved the pastrami. I had to go with her recommendation. When the sandwich came out (see the photo I posted) it was literally bread and meat. Now you might have been able to pull this off if the meat was juicy and flavorful. This sandwich meat was neither. When I asked for some deli mustard, she brought out plain yellow. When I asked if the sandwich usually came with cheese, she quickly said nope! This was one of the worst sandwiches and lunch presentations I've ever had. In fairness, The Huddle is known for it's breakfasts. I would love to stop by some morning......and will update my review if the meals are as good as the other Yelper reviews indicate. But for now you'd be better off making a quick sandwich at home for lunch. read more

I was here recently looking for an old fashioned diner run by a Mom and Pop that's been around for awhile. It was just that and the food was so good that we tried to recreate one of their Eggs Benedict recipes. It did not come out the same as there's. Not quite as good. I had an omelette with spinach and feta that was great. Another nice touch was the apple butter! It is a bit cramped and out dated in decor, but that adds to the charm. Service was quick, but not all that friendly. For a breakfast spot that will leave you nostalgic, and that you can wear your Jammie's to, not break the bank, this is it. read more

(No runny whites) As requested, the bacon was perfectly soft (not crisp at all :)) The hash browns were crispy on the outside, & the inside of them melted in your mouth!! I've had this place bookmarked for awhile now and when my boyfriend said he wanted a good ol fashion breakfast this morning..I said I know just the place! The Huddle was exactly what I thought it would be from reading the reviews...small family owned breakfast spot...it was nice eating at a restaurant and seeing that the waitstaff was calling all their customers by name! I got the Crab Cake Benedict and my boyfriend got Chicken and Waffles. Crab Cake Benedict was good and it reminded me of the one that I always got at Bills Cafe in San Jose. However one of my poached eggs was overcooked..which I was a little sad about bc the runny yolk is the best part but at least the other one was cooked perfectly! They also cook hashbrowns just the way I like them...nice and crispy! The chicken and waffles was pretty delicious! I only tried a few bites bc I didn't want to eat all of my bf's food...but from what I tasted the chicken was crunchy on the outside but still juicy on the inside. My bf said he really liked the batter that they used. I also appreciated that the waitress automatically gave him an extra plate.... Really made eating the dish easier bc he was able to separate his chicken and not mix it with the syrup for waffle. Overall - good food, great service and reasonable prices! The Huddle gets 2 stars because our server was friendly. We walked in and Ruth said You can have a seat in the back". So we did...after walking ourselves through the kitchen to get there. Strange, no? Between the Belgian waffle (nothing "Belgian" about it, looked like a plain 'ole waffle to me without any powdered sugar or topping), bacon that looked like it had been microwaved and dabbed with a paper towel (aka dry as a bone), buttermilk - blueberry - and cranberry pecan pancakes I could not find anything remarkable about this place other than the fact that they left the back door open to the storage closet and office. $5 for 2..yup, read 'em T-W-O pancakes and no sides, ridiculous! The place did not feel clean at all. Did I mention they serve Folgers coffee?? I wont be going here again - even if it were free. The worst part was when I went to pay and encountered Ruth again. She was not friendly at all, didn't ask how our meal was, and barely spoke during the transaction. I'm all about supporting the small business owner, however, there is a level of customer service that is expected when people go out and spend their hard earned money. What a fantastic greasy spoon hidden in Mission Heights. Go here for a cozy atmosphere full of colorful locals being served up breakfast favorites from staff that treat them like family. I tried the French toast topped with fried chicken. Oh man, everything was delicious. Gooey toast smothered in syrup, marmalade and apple butter topped with four pieces of crispy chicken. Read the reviews and told her let's try it. It's a small place and parking is limited to the street. We were greeted by Cory and some of the obviously regulars. The special was French toast, 2 eggs and 2 pcs of sausage or bacon. We both ordered the specials with crispy bacon and coffee. Cory brought out some cups of homemade preserves, strawberry rhubarb, orange marmalade, and apple butter with cinnamon for our french toast. Service was good and food was tasty. Very homemade. Old school diner type restaurant. I gem in the neighborhood for many years. Ruth and the team are friendly and accommodating. The food is always good although I've only been here for breakfast. I love the homemade jams and the strawberry is my fav. The weekend special is the chicken and waffles which I'm going to try the next time I visit. Every plate of it that came out was towering and is definitely going to be a challenge to finish. All portions are generous. Visited the location today based off a suggestion from my son who was on yelp looking around for food options. Decided to try this location and it did not disappoint. Customer service here is A1. Assisted by Corey who made us feel immediately welcomed and took our orders right away along with giving us great suggestions based on the specials for the day. The food was great, the coffee was great and I enjoyed the apple butter sauce here so much I had to take a jar back home. Corey was nice enough to find one in the back for me and as I am not local to the area I was happy to have one for the road. The location is small inside with a few tables and bar style/counter seating. There are also a few tables outside adjacent to the entrance door. The place gives some what older classic diner type of vibes. Will definitely be back and now I know where I'm going when I'm in town again. read more

Some buddies and I stumbled upon the Huddle because it was one of the few places open to grub on New Years day. Some other reviews suggested the food takes a while to be prepared, and they weren't joking. Time from order to food arrival was 45min, which is the time it takes me to perform an appendectomy, or fly from OC to vegas. The southwestern huddle burger was great, pretty much a homemade western bacon cheeseburger with onion rings, bacon, barbecue sauce and a thick patty. I asked for an extra patty and they gladly obliged. A cougar at the next table struck up a conversation with us. It was actually more of a one-way convo because she was the only one talking, going on and on about guys that were hitting on her the night before. Shrug. I ordered a simple meal of scrambled eggs and sausage without any toast. The waitress convinced me that the jam was home made so I ordered wheat toast. They make and sell home made jam various flavors. I love strawberry so as I was about to pay for my meal I asked for a small jar of strawberry jam to take home. Rather than wait in line in a busy, congested, probably unfriendly restaurant, check out the Huddle. You won't be disappointed. I know I wasn't. The chicken was crispy and had a tasty flavoring to it. The inside was juicy and moist. We sat outside and left a piece unatended for like 15 mins. When we eventually cut into it, it was still hot! Great experience as always! Came in on a Sunday, sat down right away and had a great breakfast. Started with a cinnamon roll big enough to share (YUM!!) then had the feta spinach omelette. Both very satisfying :) On a side-note, the home made orange marmalade, strawberry rhubarb jam and apple butter were scrumptious! I am usually more of a plain strawberry girl, but these were really REALLY good :) If you haven't already, get over and give them a try! We eat here at least once a week. First of all- best hash browns, golden and crispy every time. Daily specials such as eggs Benedict are always a good deal. They also make homemade shakes that are bomb. The coffee is really good too. When a fruit cup is served, the fruit is actually ripe!!! Yay!
