Great place for breakfast. We had a party of 7 and they took great care of us. Kory was an amazing front guy who helped make everyone feel welcome. The quiche, pecan roll, and jams were outstanding. Everything else was solid. Prices affordable and it had the classic vintage mom and pop vibe we love. If you enjoy yourself and don't take life to seriously this is the spot. Do them a favor and show up no later than an hour before they close. It's not a large team of people they have a lot to close up. read more

Two visits within four days? I think I kind of love this place. To give credit where credit is due, we never would have even known about this restaurant were it not for the Yelp reviews, ratings and pictures. So, thank you fellow Yelpers! The restaurant is located in Mission Hills, a cute and quiet neighborhood that I adore. It's across the street from the original Phil's BBQ location, and according to the story on the menu, they've been there forever. And I used to frequent the Phil's Goldfinch location more often than I care to admit...yet, never saw this place. Go figure. The place itself is kind of tiny. They have two or three tables outside, plus maybe eight or so tables inside, all clustered around the counter (seating for approximately 8 there, as well). I'm fairly certain there's a dining area in "the back", as well, but haven't yet been able to confirm that. They were shuttling people "to the back" on our last visit, so they're either running an underground railroad, or seating larger groups out there. The food is pretty dang good. On our first visit, I finally got the pancakes I'd been craving. Two (very large and very fresh) blueberry pancakes, one egg and a side of home fries for less than $8. My husband got the Corned Beef Hash with an egg and a side of hash browns. His order came with toast (he chose sourdough). They ask you to be patient while they make your food, and that's something to keep in mind. Everything's being prepared using the griddle, and they can only fit so many people behind the counter at a time, so if it's busy in there, you're going to be waiting. On our first visit, the wait for food wasn't bad at all. We were sipping on coffee (and, by the way - their coffee is amazing! I do want to ask what brand they brew, because their pots all say "Folgers" on them, and I know that can't be right!) and chatting, and the next thing we knew, our food was there. I loved everything on my plate. The blueberries were super fresh and juicy, and everything was perfect. The home fries had a bit of a spice to them that was both unexpected and enjoyed. My husband also loved his order, and we were both blown away that the jams they provide are homemade. Seriously - who makes jam in bulk for their customers anymore? On our second visit, the food took much longer to come out. We had both decided to order the Chicken Fried Steak and eggs (over medium for both, with wheat toast and home fries for me and sourdough toast and hash browns for him). The restaurant was fairly packed, so we figured it'd be a bit before we were served. We were fine with that, as that amazingly delicious coffee was free-flowing. The best I can say about the "Chicken Fried Steak" is that it was seasoned well. I would definitely not order it again. For $11, they give you a hand-formed hamburger patty that's been dipped in flour and cooked on the griddle. It's served on top of a pile of country gravy, with the potatoes and eggs on the side. It wasn't what we were expecting, but it was okay. It didn't blow me away at all, but at least I was served toast, and finally had a chance to try the jams myself. They give you orange marmalade, strawberry and apple butter. My favorite was the apple butter. The other two were just too sweet. So, would we come back? Most definitely. We've been lucky in that it's been easy to find parking, and there hasn't been a wait for a table. Plus, both times, our check was less than $25 for the both of us. And, they have a "frequent diner" card, which can be punched and (I'm assuming) used for deals or discounts or...something. (I didn't read the card, can you tell?) Everybody who works there is friendly and the place has a quaint, homey feel to it. Seriously, if you didn't know where you were - if you just opened your eyes inside the restaurant - you'd think you're in a small town somewhere in the middle of the US. I am going to get right to it and say that if you can try / lick/ scrape/ spread that strawberry housemade rhubarb jam on everything, I won't judge. It is amazing! We didn't get to try the marmalade but I am guessing that's pretty good too. Okay. Moving on. This place is unreal. Because it is a reasonably priced diner open 6-3 in the middle of swanky trendy restaurants. And it has delicious fill your belly food. I got the corned beef and hash and it was one of the best I have ever had. I also had a bite of frosting on the Cinnamon Del Mar roll. So good. Buttery and creamy! Kids got pancake with warm syrup and husband got eggs. Everyone loved their breakfast and can't wait to go back! Coffee is unlimited but it is Folgers so don't expect greatness. Cute little café in the Mission Hills district adjacent to Hillcrest. Limited pavement(sidewalk) seating. I had the ham & cheese omelette with hashed browns. Their homemade apple butter and strawberry jam were excellent! Finished off the meal with their homemade cinnamon roll. Delicious! There are many old pics of local media celebrities on the walls. I used to love this place. Went there today and ordered the Fried Chicken and Waffles. The chicken was literally ICE COLD in the middle, the waffles tasted like they were the frozen kind that you heat up. We sent the order back which I rarely do. I ordered the Corn beef hash. The hash was acceptable, but the potatoes were cold. I didn't send them back. The service was GREAT, it was just the food was a bit off today. Did breakfast here this morning. Was greeted at the door by I think the owner/manager of the place. Nice guy. Checked up on me often. Did the Saturday special of Eggs Benedict (there are 4 kinds and I did the CA one). The food took a minute to get but I wasn't in a hurry so it wasn't a big deal. The place here has an old school ambience. They have old signs that you'd see in old diners across the U.S. so that was cool (some of the signs are funny...one talked about lousy food or service and thanks for coming). There are quite a few regulars here as the owner/manager seemed to know quite a few people by name. The food itself was solid. The Eggs Benedict were good (the tax and bill came out to over $14). The house potatoes were bit burnt but not too bad enough to consume. They have a chicken and waffles plate I am hankering to come back for. Great little eatery in the MH area. read more

Having spent many years in the South, I was missing Waffle House this morning and had a mean craving for yummy, affordable waffles and hashbrowns. Thanks to the tempting Yelp photos, decided to try The Huddle which is very close to us in Mission Hills. What a treat! The decor and vibe are old school local diner. The Belgian Waffles were outstanding (not like those at WaHo, but thick and pillowy with an excellent buttery flavor), and the hash browns scattered and crispy the way they should be. The fam enjoyed their bacon cheeseburger (breakfast and lunch served all day--sweet!) with fries, and we got out of there for less than $30 for a fam of 4 (don't think that's possible at nearby Brooklyn Girl, Patio on Goldfinch, etc). Would have liked more pie options (you can order ahead quite a few whole varieties but only 1 type was available by the slice today), and wouldn't recommend for a group of more than 4 since the place is quite small with only 2 inside tables that could seat up to 4, but not a problem for us. We must have walked passed this place hundreds of times but never caught out attention. I have a sweet tooth and when I saw the French toast on the menu had to try this place.. Ambience:- Gives you the feel of old times dinner which is rare to find in this hustling town and specially in Hillcrest. Sweet little spot with indoor and outdoor seating. Service:- I think it's a family run business and the services were fast and the people working in here are sweet and courteous. A big plus point!!! Food:- FOOD WAS FANTASTIC...I was in a rush so got myself the Stuffed Cinnamon French toast and a Garden burger. It's perfectly priced and the menu was short and had what we needed. A few days ago I happened to be driving past this establishment and noticed how warm and inviting it looked with its colored lights outside. Today I had the opportunity to check it out as I was waiting for my car to be serviced. The owner, Ruth, was incredibly warm and welcoming and the other patrons were having active, engaging conversations; everyone seemed to know everyone else! Ruth took the time to ask me if it was my first time here and asked how I found out about the place. She then told me the story of the Huddle and her role in becoming the owner herself. The food was delicious and they make their own jam; I had the apple butter which was delicious on some buttered rye toast. We're often in such a rush these days and when we do sit down we often bury our heads in our phones and forget to look up and take in our surroundings. This place remembers that feeling of community we all crave and I cannot wait to come back and enjoy some delicious food and warm company again soon. read more

The Huddle is a Mission Hills staple and has been around for some time. On this last visit asked the owner about the history and found out it was an ice cream parlor in the 1930s, and it has been under her ownership since 1977. This is a place where they remember you and where time seems to have stood still. The breakfasts are our favorite, the omelettes and breakfast potatoes are my go to. Strawberry-rhubarb jam on sourdough, yes please. And they have great pies for thanksgiving time. read more

Usually when my family goes to California, we have a difficult time finding places that are down-to-earth, but I was so very glad we found this place! We ate there two out of our 3 days in San Diego. The owner is such a sweet lady, so friendly! We felt welcomed right away! The atmosphere is just light and easy. We really enjoyed the food- the sausage is delicious, the hash browns are golden crispy, and eggs are done right. One word... amazing! Came here for breakfast and was legitimately blown away. I wanted to try an off the path, mom & pop breakfast place... not some typical big/flashy San Diego breakfast spot. The Huddle met and exceeded my expectations! The restaurant is small and only has a little bit of indoor seating (I'd say no more than 30 people inside) and four tables for outdoor seating. The most charming thing about the restaurant is it truly oozes small town charm, something I think San Diego is losing day by day. All the new places try to be too posh and trendy. For breakfast I ordered the crab cake eggs benedict. After a short wait, it came out and it was wam, bam, thank you ma'am amazing. I'm not really a fan of breakfast food (I mean breakfast kind of all tastes the same), but there was just something magical about the food here. Very friendly and welcoming. I had just a simple corned beef hash, with eggs and toast. Perfect, I like basics and this was for me great. The server commented on some new cups that were donated. I've been coming here for about 12 years and was sending this to a friend. I figured out I do a review. First, I've never ever had a bad meal there. I believe they've been there since about the 60s with a wide variety of breakfast and lunch items. They even have quiche and specials every day. In fact this got me hungry so I will go there tomorrow. Make sure you ask for all three homemade jellies but the apple butter is my favorite. Oh and there's more, they even have pies there. Stumbled upon this gem while looking for places to eat without any lines. It says it was closed on the weekends but we peeked inside and there were people eating in. We went inside and it has that retro small dinner feel, I knew I was going to get something homemade and authentic. Seating is limited but it was only my husband and I. I'm doing keto and I asked the gentleman what I can get to substitute for the potatoes and toast. He immediately suggested cottage cheese. Hmmm cottage cheese with steak and eggs? Taking a stroll down mission hills and came across the cute gem!! This isn't a trendy,bottomless, Instagramable place - BUT! The food is so freakin' GOOD! We arrived a little after noon and were able to snag a table for two instantly. The coffee is great, the service is friendly and welcoming. I'm not sure how historic this restaurant is but you definitely catch the theme and comforting feeling instantly. They serve your normal traditional breakfast and lunch but it's so delicious you'll clean your plate! Our family stopped here yesterday on our way out of San Diego to have breakfast, and we're very happy that we did. We received very personable service from the owner as soon as we walked in. We enjoyed our food immensely: corned beef hash, the Tuesday french toast breakfast special, a 2-egg/bacon/hash browns breakfast, and 2 pieces of french toast with cinnamon roll cream cheese spread. Everything was good! We cleaned our plates. The ambiance is simply a counter-service diner with a few tables as well as some outdoor seating. I like that the ambiance doesn't take away from the star of the show, which is the down-home cooking served up by very friendly folks! We had our puppy with us so our options were limited, we could only choose somewhere with outdoor dining! So we strolled on up and sat down at the Huddle for a late breakfast! The guy who initially came and took our drink orders was amazing. He chatted with us for 10 minutes about where we were from, and what we were visiting the area for. It was so nice. Then our server came and she was very dry. She just wanted to get our order and get inside in the warmth. I ordered a hot chocolate and the thing was massive with a tower of whipped cream! I was in heaven.. although a fly later flew into the chocolate part and ruined my hot chocolate appetite. Lol. The cool thing about the huddle is you can order dinner food whenever you want, and breakfast whenever you want. This works well cuz I don't always like a huge breakfast. It doesn't sit well in my stomach all day, but my hubby loves breakfast foods! I ordered a Cobb salad because the description on the menu sounded good, and he ordered a chicken fried steak, with eggs, and hash! The Cobb salad definitely pleased my taste buds, but my husband was not impressed with his chicken fried steak. The menu didn't say that it was a chicken fried steak burger. What made me mad is this dude asked us if we could move so they could accommodate a large party. Like really. I'm mid bite and they ask us to move. What type of restaurant does that?!
