My boyfriend and I were looking for a new spot to eat breakfast since we typically go to the same few every time. I came across Hungry Hollow and looked at the menu and photos and thought it sounded great! Now when I tell you this, I am not exaggerating...great was an understatement when walking through their door. It was PERFECT! We love small, hole in the wall, "welcome home" type places and Hungry Hollow is just that! Plus, it smelled great and we hadn't even gotten up close to any food yet! And it was so cutely decorated, which was fun, too! My boyfriend ordered a ham and cheese inlet w/hash browns and toast and he said it was DELICIOUS! The sourdough toast was thick, the hash browns thick shredded, and the ham was like thick ham steak in the omelet! Can't go wrong with this classic! I ordered the Belgian waffle meal with bacon, extra crispy, and an over medium egg, side of syrup and peanut butter for the waffle, and it was fantastic! Truly one of the best Belgian waffles I've ever had! Crispy on the outside, soft and lightly sweet on the inside! We also got orange juice, which was good, too! Not only was the food wonderful but the staff and service was incredible! Everybody welcomed you like family, were attentive and quick, but mainly, the employees AND customers were all SO NICE! You can tell it's mostly locals who've been coming a long time, we love places like that and will now become locals ourselves at Hungry Hollow because we will absolutely continue coming back. Drove by today (12/16) around noon after doing some grocery shopping at the nearby Savemart. Despite current restrictions against dining indoor and outdoor, they had people eating inside and outside. Their careless behavior is dangerous. The owners ought to be ashamed of themselves. I have had friends in the hospital and had several friends who have lost parents or grandparents due to the pandemic. I myself am currently unemployed due to the pandemic. People like the ownership/management team are not only forcing their employees to choose between their safety and their paycheck, but they are also endangering the community at large. Is service and atmosphere was very pleasant. :-) The food was tasty! Although, my meal of eggs, potatoes and a biscuit and gravy did not fill up the actual plate due to disappointing portions. I'm not sure if this is typical or they were trying to distribute certain foods evenly w/ other existing customers since the restaurant was closing in 20 minutes & my husband and I came in as the kitchen was prepping & cleaning to clock out. I mean I get it we've all been there, at a job where it's been pretty slow, so premature closing prep begins and here comes some customers that inadvertently put that plan on pause. (ugh) Although, since this was my first time eating at this business & my husband's 4th, he said the portions were definitely small w/ my order. My friend has been coming here for years, so we decided to pop in. They were really busy but still very attentive to all the patrons coming in. We walked in and they told us to sit wherever we wanted, either inside or outside we opted to sit inside. It's a small but quaint restaurant. They are well staffed. The coffee cups are normal size haha the coffee is a bit on the bitter side but it was nice, hot and fresh. They make sure your coffee cup is constantly full. We had our orders taken and our food arrived pretty fast. We were asked what condiments we wanted and they wipe them down prior to bringing them to your table. All of the servers we encountered were super friendly. I would definitely eat here again. My friend ordered the Larry scramble and I ordered the bacon, tomato and cheese omelet. "The Hungry Hollow" is as hidden as you would get because I had absolutely no idea this place existed until now. Located in Carmichael in a strip mall that neighbors bigger stores such as Big 5 and Ross, this place can literally be hit or miss. I came here on a late Saturday morning with my two friends who visited here from out of town. We wanted to find something close to my home as they had other plans that day. And as I was Yelping a good breakfast joint, I came across "The Hungry Hollow" as I am totally okay with a solid 4-star rating and nearly 100 reviews. When we arrived, the restaurant was packed! That's a good sign! And it almost reminded me of going back to the 1980's as the decor was old school with some neat artwork that you'd find out of a country home. It definitely screamed vintage while the people who work here seem very polite and take pride in their family-owned business. Do keep in mind that this place can (and does) get busy so don't be surprised if you might have to wait. However, we were seated immediately and given menus. Since we were all in the mood for breakfast, I ordered their 2-egg breakfast (with eggs cooked over easy) complete with a side of bacon, home-fried potatoes, and sourdough toast. Not a bad deal for only $9.95. My friends ordered similar items while one went with their corned beef hash and the other ordered their biscuits and gravy. I've got to say, as busy as it was here, our food came out quick! Everything was piping hot and portions were huge! The bacon was thick-cut and had the right amount of crispiness. And the potatoes were seasoned perfectly while not being overbearingly salty. Since I was on an empty stomach, I ended up eating my entire meal. And since it was already 12pm by the time I ate this, it did fill me up throughout the day and there was no need for lunch. My two friends loved their meal as it filled them up as well for several hours that day. Do keep in mind, they have limited hours as they're only open until 2:45pm every day. But with their extensive breakfast (and lunch menu), I am sure you'll find something you like. Overall, its a great little dive spot where you will feel right at home. Wow. New BF lives close by, this place showed up on a Yelp search for breakfast. It far surpassed any expectation I had. When a place has four solid stars you know it's going to be good but this place was great. NBF got the hollow scramble and it was spicy and fresh. The home fries are good and the portions perfect. Not too big, but enough to need walkies after. I got the Larry scramble and it was absolutely perfect. I love that they didn't drench it in gravy, it was just the right amount. They didn't have anything to hide. The sausage patties were perfect, little folded omelet was perfect and fluffy, just the right amount of cheese. And the hash browns? I asked them and she said they weren't homemade but they were good enough for me buddy. Oh my gosh they were so good. Definitely from the freezer but they were cooked to perfection, nice and crispy. I have been to this cafe twice in the last couple of months since moving to the area. I have tried multiple items in those two visits. Most of the items were very good (the linguica scramble, the corned beef hash, the biscuits w/country gravy, etc). The one item which did not make that list was the waffle. It just had a sharp taste to it. Also, it was almost too airy. I like a more dense, bready-type waffle. I will try it again the next time I go in just to give it another try The folks there are very nice and the service is right on point. They are very attentive without hovering or continually interrupting your meal. They are also very dog friendly and had shown great kindness to my two Bumpus hounds. This place has been around for 42 years. It's easy to miss though. In the Crestview shopping center. In the back left corner. Do you want awesome all American food. Hashbrowns biscuits and gravy with pieces of sausage in it. An omelette that makes up half of you plate. Corned beef hash cooked perfectly. Then this is the place for you. We parked got out of the car and walked up to the door. First thing I noticed was that when we enter this place we will be the youngest people in here. That being said. This place is awesome!!! We sat down and started talking about other peoples plates. The waitress heard us and came over and talked about their food choices. These girls had bionic ears lol. Every time we said anything about the place or food one of them would come over and talk about it. These girls love what they do and are really love their customers. Come here and check it out. Watch out for the bitter old man (owner) who works in the back. I asked the waitress for my coffee in a large cup because I drink a lot. They had a large mug sitting right next to the smaller ones. He told the waitress NO! So why have it out in the first place? You will never see my face or money again. I'm sure the feeling is mutual because he went out of his way to be rude to a customer. We try to make it to Hungry Hollow every weekend because it is sooooo tasty. The place itself is really cute (always decorated for the nearest holiday). Super cute little spot near where I live. The food was delicious and the workers were very kind and warm. The environment gave you a very comfortable and home-y feel. I had the Jeremy's scramble because I haven't had anything like it before and loved it. My bf had the meatloaf sandwich with a side of cottage cheese, and I had coffee as well. Hungry Hollow has alway Been one of my favorite places to eat! Food is always good. I bring new people here all the time. My favorite is the Belgian Waffle combo with scrambled eggs and bacon. The eggs are always cooked just right. The employees are also very friendly. My favorite waitress has the short blonde hair (sorry I'm bad with names) I think her name is Debbie. I have been meaning to try this cafe for a while now and finally got the chance today. It is tucked away in the corner by Ross. The sign isn't too visible because of how the buildings are angled and could be easily missed. If this were midtown I would have given the cafe a 2 star. I ordered a chicken salad sandwich with a side of fruit. The fruit was old to the point where it was translucent. It was honeydew, cantaloupe and 3 slices of banana. Cheap fruit so it should be replaced by that point. The chicken was good but a lot of seasoning was left to be desired. A lot of mayo with a couple dices of celery here and there. Also comes with shredded iceberg lettuce. Definitely not worth the $8 but it came out fast. Service was good. Won't be back but glad I tried it. read more

We came here for the first time for some breakfast, and it was very good. They have a few different breakfast specials that are very reasonable and plenty of food. I got 2 eggs, hash browns, English muffin and chicken fried steak. My wife got the same, except pancakes instead of the muffin, and met daughter got French toast. Everything was excellent. We were here from SF Bay Area for my grandson's basketball game. We were super hungry and in between games with only an hour or so to eat before his next game. We googled them and were not disappointed. Nice little diner with a good vibe, super nice staff and everything we ordered was good!!! When we arrived our table was cleared and prepared for us instantly. The place reminded me of Mel's Diner from the sit com Alice. Yikes. This place needs some serious help. They are not handling service during covid well at all. First, the staff kept taking off their masks or barely on their face, they are not using the right cleaning product for the front of house, they can't be refilling used drink cups but they're doing that too, not following hand washing procedures, etc. As someone who manages a restaurant I'm shocked that they can get away with continuing these practices. The servers were very sweet, I will say. I get that some of these things I mentioned don't seem like a big deal but your crowd seems to be more elderly people. Please please please pay closer attention to your cleaning and sanitation practices. You have potential because your staff is super nice but you need to tighten up on some aspects. read more

I came here because my regular breakfast place (Crickets) was closed for the Holidays. It is a place I always wanted to try and that was the motivation. I was pleasantly surprised how friendly and tasty my experience was. The coffee was good (better than Many of the local breakfast places) and the waitress was very nice. The place was busy and the two rooms were close to full. Which is amazing for a Monday. I had biscuits and gravy along with two eggs and sausage patties. It was served quickly and was all hot and flavorful. The sausage patties were different than many I've had and were really good. If I had one criticism it would be the temperature in the dining room was too cool. Not one person had their coat off. Everyone was bundled up. Of course it was 37 degrees outside, so that had a lot to do with the inside temperature. Overall it was a great experience and I will be back again, soon. read more
