It was very busy for noon on a weekday, though it is summer and the weather was gorgeous. The restaurant itself is clean and well kept. The outdoor area is lovely. There's plenty of seating and a fun tiki bar that opens in the summertime. For lunch, I got the wild berry iced tea and the breakfast bowl. My sister got the tea and avocado toast. Portion sizes are small, and at cafe prices. The avocado toast was super disappointing... it was one slice of bread, a smear of avocado, and about a quarter cup of chopped up tomatoes. I put more butter on my toast than the amount of avocado this one had. It's a great local spot, but be warned about the food/prices.

I don't like hearing what others discuss; nor do I want them listening to us either. It was that kind of close. However, the food was quite good. One of the highlights was their Heirloom Tomato Gazpacho Soup, made with Heirloom Tomatoes, Cucumber, Green Peppers, Red Wine Vinegar, Red Onion, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil. It was served pureed. I probably would have liked some of the cucumber and green pepper tossed in the soup finely diced just for a little crunch, but the soup tasted fine, and we always love when gazpacho is offered, which is rarely. We also tried the Pulpo a la Plancha, which was charred octopus over a bed of corn, red pepper and a few other items (that I now don't recall.) The octopus was good... I've had better elsewhere, but this was still good. Not seasoned all that much, and perhaps, a bit too charred, but we made it work. The star of the evening were the scallops. We actually split the entree, and with a side addition of broccolini, it actually was enough food for us, since we both had the gazpacho and octopus as appetizers. Amazing how growing older has diminished our appetites... but we figured that since we're on a road trip, it's not like doggy bags for leftovers will work out, so we didn't want to waste any food and just ordered the one entree. There were five good size scallops (already a bonus cuz most restaurants only give THREE, and they gave FIVE at Flora). It came with Corn Puree, Roasted Corn pieces, Tomato Gazpacho, Truffle Dust, and Sweet Potato Crisps. The scallops were succulent, flavorful, and meaty. Absolutely delicious... and the accompanying corn and tomato flavors added even more flavor. We would've licked the plate if we could. Lastly, the sangria was sweet and refreshing. I would definitely return here if we ever get back to Newport.

So when we made plans to spend the day in Newport, I had some time to book the perfect restaurant. Also, a few choices came to mind, but then I found Flora. Flora is fairly new to Newport. A Mediterranean hot spot with gorgeous views in the beautiful Gardiner House, which used to be a vacant lot. The good - Parking can be difficult around here since its down a side street off Thames. They do Valet for $25 which I thought was a bit steep. So, we eventually found metered street parking. Upon walking to the restaurant we were greeted by a very friendly attendant. He showed us the way to the restaurant which was up a few flights of staircases. The great - Once inside Flora we were greeted by a very nice Hostess. She brought us to our table which was overlooking the ocean. The ambiance is stunning! Our server came over and we ordered a bottle of water and some drinks. Then, we also ordered one of their popular appetizers called Jamon Con Tomate - delish! Then, we ordered their beet salad which was also good. For entrees, I went with their Black Bass (something new that I have never heard of before). My husband had their Veal Scallopini, also excellent. They brought over 2 different desserts for my birthday, one with a candle of course. In summary - Everything about this restaurant was spectacular. And, I want to note that even though some of the other reviews were not as good, don't let that deter you from dining here. I highly recommend checking out Flora the next time you are here. Plus, they have a gorgeous patio for those hot summer days in Newport. Nothing beats a warm day, and ocean views. Cheers~

Very friendly greeting and service at hostess stand (we had to wait for our table 15 min but no problem, they were on it). Waitress was just ok, good enough but not attentive and we had long waits before she reappeared. Food was average. Zucchini chips were a surprise hit, very lightly fried (and I usually don't do anything fried), dip with it was very good. Caesar salads were generously sized and crunchy good, dressing solid. For entrees our table had 2 baked cod, both were good but the portion of cod was very small in comparison with the potatoes underneath. Our table had one of the specials which was pasta bolognese. For $37 it was a major disappointment, small size for a pasta entree, average taste. May want to enquire as what the price point is on any pasta special. Last entree was the Tuna. Nice portion size but didn't get it rare as ordered, it was med so for me that ruined it. The beans and broccoli rabe were so salty underneath I took half of it home. Not sure I will eat it. Sadly disappointed in overall meal experience. A shout out to our bread, water girl who was fabulous! I really wish we got her name. She was at our table whenever we needed anything and had a bubbly personality that made our evening fun. Side note to anyone coming from Newport: for years we would take the ferry from Perrotti Park to Jamestown. That ferry is not operating as it used to and the price is double what it was in the last few years. No problem, we drove over but certainly a deterrence for us as we loved bringing guests over on the ferry.

But Beech in Jamestown had me pulling out my phone faster than I pull out my wallet at the end of a great meal. We showed up early like the eager, slightly-too-hungry couple we are. Did they make us wait awkwardly by the hostess stand? Absolutely not. They swept us into a bright, window-wrapped room so cheerful it practically hugged us. Turns out they'd lost power earlier that day. LOST POWER. You wouldn't have known it. These people were cooler than the other side of the pillow. Now. The food. Oh, the FOOD. I got the steak with puréed pomme, asparagus, and carrots, and I need you to understand -- this thing had a sear on it that made me want to stand up and applaud. The sauce? Somebody's grandmother's secret recipe dipped in liquid gold. It melted in my mouth so fast I briefly forgot my own name. My wife had to remind me we were in public. Speaking of my wife -- she ordered the Tortellacci. Stuffed pasta, porcini mushrooms, ricotta, limoncello cream sauce, white truffle shavings. She took one bite and just stared at me. No words. Just stared. That's how you know it was BANANAS. In the best possible way. The rolls came out hot and fresh, which is honestly its own love language. Our water and bread gal? Sunshine in human form. Smiling, attentive, welcoming -- the kind of person who makes you feel like a guest, not a table number. Our waitress treated us like family, which for two people on date night is exactly the vibe you need. Beech, you had us at the bread. You kept us at the steak. We'll be back on this island, and you will absolutely see our faces again. 10/10. No notes. Just compliments.
