4 stars the first meal I had here, 2 stars for the second visit here. First time I had the bacon, cheeseburger with a side house salad. Burger was mouth watering, mixed green salad tasted fresh. Second time was the half roasted chicken with mashed potatoes and green beans. Chicken was wayyyy too salty, and not much breast meat to speak of. Mashed potatoes had a thick gallop of sour cream mixed on top...was much too over powering. I did not enjoy this meal. We've been to The Knick for brunch and again on New Year's Eve. The food is delicious (their corned beef hash is perfection on a hazy Sunday morning) and I love the atmosphere of the place. I especially love being able to make a reservation in the midst of Saturday night partying when I know I will need recovery food in the morning! Only reason I knocked a star off is both times I went they were out of the first drink I ordered....a bottle of rose on New Year's Eve and the key flavored vodka for a specialty mimosa at brunch. Both times they ended up being able to make good substitutions but it seems like they should be able to keep their liquor stocked for specialty drinks. That said, this is definitely on our list of favorite brunch spots, especially since it's so close to the lake....perfect for a stroll afterwards to walk off that hash! read more

I wouldn't go back. Right when we walked in, we were told they didn't have a table for 9 available and that was it. We had to ask them if they would put our name down and if we could wait for the table to be ready, then they wrote our name down. It was odd. Then the food was ok and the Bloody Mary was bad. it had a lot of toppings at least but the mix was bad. The service was super slow too. However, the waitress was very nice and positive. read more

The Knick's Happy Hour which is from 3-6 Mon-Fri is to die for. The tater tots are the most delicious, as well as their fried chicken sliders and micro burgers. I usually split 3 items off their menu and end up full. The beef satay is also good, the dipping sauces are quite excellent. High quality food at an excellent price- this place can't be beat! Also has a great outdoor patio on the south side which has an ok view of the lake. read more

I love this place. So, when I get off the plane in Milwaukee from Boston, it is about 8 p.m. I get to the place I am staying, the County Clare, just in time for the kitchen to close-- EVERY time. And then I walk around the corner, STARVING, to the Knick. It is always open, the food is fabulous, and it is the greatest reminder that I'm not in Boston anymore because, people, this would be a $30 meal in Boston and it is $15 here. I took Mom here today for Mother's Day and ate brunch. Food was good, I had two eggs any style with breakfast potatoes and toast. Mom had a Cobb salad and said it was tasty, especially the blue cheese that was on it. I really enjoyed my Bloody Mary (Knick & Mary), I could tell they use homemade Bloody Mary mix. Lots of beers to choose from for the chaser. Prices were reasonable for the food and portion sizes. Service was great, server said Happy Mothers Day to my Mom, even though it's the next day. I like the blown glass chandeliers and the music was the right volume and was actually tolerable. Patio looks nice for outdoor seating. read more

I loved the Knick until today. And I would have loved them after today had I got more than a less than heartfelt "oh, sorry" from the manager I just spoke to. My husband and I recently moved into an apartment nearby the Knick and eat there pretty much once every week. Duck Confit is superb and the scallops--yum! And the ravioli--oh my, so good. Thursday, half price wine bottles--yeah, I liked the Knick. This week I had the truffle burger--hubby said I should've gotten the ribs. LOL I should've listened to him which is why I told him he should've told me to get the truffle burger because then, Lord knows, I WOULD'VE gotten the ribs! Burger came and the conversation was so good I had only a couple bites and decided to take the rest home. The smell of it sort of turned my nose off a bit when it was set before me. At the time I thought it was because I thought the truffle oil was excessive--now I have to wonder if that was what I was smelling. So I ate about a quarter of it and the fries (always take at least half of what I order home for lunch the next day at work). Well that night and the next morning tummy was rumbly, kind of achy, but no big deal. Went to work as usual. At lunch time (2pm) hubby and I split my leftovers. Two hours later (4pm) I was pooping water every five to ten minutes with the most insane stomach cramps I have ever had and then puking my guts out and then both at the same time! Went to the hospital--thought I was dying. I have never had so much stuff come out so forcefully of so many holes of my body at the same time! I'm not kidding! A whole different level of sick. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating! That's when hubby started puking too; while we were waiting for me to be seen at the hospital. Food poisoning. The ONLY thing we both ate was that burger. (And for the sake of argument, I live next door so it was refrigerated immediately and kept refrigerated until we reheated for lunch the next day.) I've been sick since. Hubby too. So today, in my weakened state, walking toward the door of my apartment, I saw the sign "THe Knick" which I have always loved, and decided I ought to say something--they should know, right? It's the right thing to do to let them know. Thought about posting here first and thought, naw, I ought to give them a chance before I tell the world I got sick from their burger...that is just the right thing to do --so I walked into the Knick and asked for a manager. Thought I'd keep my voice down so no one else would hear what I had to say--not that there was really anyone there to hear, but anyway, I asked for a manager and she was, so I told her what had happened and she said "so you didn't eat anything else that day?" Seriously? MY HUSBAND AND ME. No, I know the only thing we BOTH ate was that wretched burger. OIY. "So sorry" she said, and as I walked out the door, I said "yeah, me too." Not because I was so sick (and still am) but because that was the best she did. Thankful for the apology but was expecting a little more. Even just a little sincerity in the apology. I'll save you guys the picture of my bruise from the IV. Yeah, I REALLY did get food poisoning from the truffle burger at the Knick. Something I will NEVER forget. I was not impressed with my latest visit to The Knick. They seem to have trouble managing reservations. My friends and I arrived at 10:30 on a Sunday and were told it would be an hour wait even though there were many open tables. They said we couldn't have an open table because they were saved for reservations. After 15 minutes of waiting and still lots of open tables we asked again and they seated us. My friends and I had been seated for just over an hour and shortly after signing our checks, the hostess came over and told us to finish up our conversation and leave because she needed the table for reservations. That's honestly how she phrased it, she said "please leave, we need your table". I understand needing to turn over tables on a busy day, but I know there's a better way to do it then telling customers to "leave". I was embarrassed to be kicked out of a restaurant, especially after paying $35 for my meal. read more

Food: 4 Stars My partner and I have definitely made this our go-to spot for Sunday brunch. I've had the steak and eggs multiple times and it's always delicious although, if you were to ask, the steak could use teeny tiny bit more "flavor." Other than that, no complaints! My partner has had the Mediterranean Breakfast more than once and, it's always simple.. Yet very tasty and fulfilling. To drink, a non-alcoholic recommendation would be the mint lemonade. Definitely worth a try! Service: 3 Stars Don't get me wrong the waitresses don't deliver bad service but, on our multiple visits they've never really gone above and beyond to make our experience the best. Mediocre food at best. Service was ok - but not enthusiastic or overly friendly. Buffalo wings were charred and dry, chicken was not at all moist or tasty. Sauce was spicy but not particularly good - couldn't finish them. Vegetables were at least 3 days old and limp - totally inedible and disgusting. Fish tacos fell apart the moment you picked them up as the tortillas were soggy and sopping. A very unappetizing dish. All in all a far cry from the 4 star rating we saw on yelp. Just got home from dinner with two friends and my wife...my wife, daughter and I had lunch there about two weeks ago and we thought it would be nice to have dinner, sitting outside was a plus...however the meal consisting of appetizers and entree were disappointing...the calamari was barely warm and chewy....I ordered the pork chop as an entree...it came out warm (not hot) and was extremely tough and overdone...reminded me of a store bought pork chop...sorry but we won't be back...I wish them well. First time here since I was staying at the hotel above. Very friendly staff. The food was awesome. I wanted to keep it low key and I had the wings and Brussel sprouts. The wings were extremely well seasoned and I would definitely recommend. The Brussel spouts we really good but more of a shareable item as it was a lot to eat as one person. I will come back to try some of the seafood items on my next visit. The atmosphere was very relaxing and low key fancy. I have always like the chandelier artist that they are exhibiting. My friends and I went here for New Year's Day brunch, and we were pretty disappointed. The $3 hot cocoa was blatantly a Swiss Miss mix (we could tell based both on flavor and the lumps of un-mixed powder that were floating in our cups) and the pancake syrup, although it was listed on the menu as "maple syrup", wasn't remotely maple-flavored. The salmon omelette description didn't mention any onion, but when it came to the table it was packed with diced onion. On the other hand the pancakes were very good, both fluffy and flavorful, and the breakfast potatoes were reportedly delicious. It seems like The Knick is cutting costs on peripheral items, but they'd honestly be better off just not offering those things rather than presenting outright bad food. This was an after work spot, but we will not be returning. We have been getting repeatedly worse service. The food is good, but the service is extremely slow - possibly a happy hour deterrent? Server disappears between 5:45 and 6:20 (happy hour ends at 6) to return with checks despite our wanting additional drinks and food. These have all been different servers so possibly an administrative policy? The last time she said, "but it's after happy hour". They do not stop service at 6. Four times we have had this same slow service and have now found a different nearby spot where we are treated like the good customers and tippers that we are. read more

I don't normally take the time to complain, but this deserves it. Here's what was ordered: the Atlantic Salmon salad (baby arugula, grape tomatoes, capers and lemon-dill vinaigrette). I got hockey puck sized salmon, baby arugula, 3 grape tomatoes, no capers and tasteless vinaigrette. Reordered, and only difference with new was there were 5 tomatoes and capers. $15 dollars for what - greens, salmon and tomatoes? RIP OFF! Other item ordered - chicken caesar salad ($13). The frozen chicken was tough, tasteless but the grill marks from Sysco were nice! The Parmesan cheese was the equivalent to Kraft store-bought unknown shelf life cheese. $13 for tasteless crap. Oh, forgot to mention the dressing for the caesar - inedible. Good thing I had a balsamic in the fridge! read more

We visited The Knick for a cocktail after our friend got engaged and had a terrible experience. The experience started off roughly when we asked if they did any specials for a celebratory event and before we could finish our sentence the "manager" cut us off with a "no" and a rude look on her face. Throughout the whole experience our server was rude and acted like we were wasting her time with just getting drinks. Too bad we ended a celebratory day with such a bad experience. I have come here a few times. Two times for brunch, and one time for dinner. The dinner was very good. Brunch wasn't too bad. I got the TURKEY SCRAMBLE. It was good, but half way through it got to be too much. It was a little on the bland side; could have had some [more] seasoning. Other items ordered at my table were the SMOKED SALMON BENEDICT, which the salmon was cooked more this time making it a lot better, and the EGG SANDWICH, which was very good. I enjoyed the selection of music for brunch. The place was a little echo-ey, making it hard for me to hear others at my table. Forgot to make reservations before The Nutcracker, but The Knick could accommodate four of us. Specialty old fashioned was very tasty, but you have to like a nutty, smokey taste, which I do. Each of us had something different. Shared, and each of us thought our meal was the best of the four; I had the herb marinated chicken! Parking is always a bit tight, but we were able to find street parking fairly quickly. Our food came quickly as well, and our server was very attentive. This is the first time I have been here in a while, and I have only been to the Knick for lunch (seated outside) which is always a treat. We will be back for dinner. When we said we had another 15 minutes before our appointment, drinks were refilled one more time. This place is alright. It is a lovely place to bring your loved one, friends or family, but I didn't think that the food was anything to write home about. The gorganzola peach salad just wasn't all that great to me. The peaches were all warm (borderline hot) and seemed like they were out of a can, and the gorganzola was hot, and I guess I'm just not used to this. I was envisioning a refreshing salad, but instead I got something that just made me uncomfortable to eat. My pork shoulder was satisfactory, but the polenta cakes did save it. They were very tasty. Also, everything here is Van Gogh vodka. I just think it is cheap to plaster a particular vodka brand all over your cocktail menu which makes it really look like you are getting a big discount from the company that makes it. Just not classy, and if you are trying to be a decent place which the Knick is trying to be, you shouldn't do that. Just an opinion. Two words - crab hash. Oh, wait, two more - Queen Mary. The Knick's crab hash and oversize Bloody Marys are two reasons I enthusiastically recommend this restaurant. I'm a big seafood fan, so combining crab meat with hash browns and eggs is pretty much heaven. If you want the crab hash, though, it's better to go earlier because they sell out. The Queen Mary is a giant Bloody garnished with enough goodies to be a meal in and of itself. It's the ultimate hangover cure! And The Knick has a great outdoor patio for when the weather's nice. read more

When I was here I spotted a group of kids who looked like Gossip Girl or OC extras, and they fit right in. After a long day (aren't they all?), I wanted nothing more than a burger and a shake. The Knick, as previous reviewers have raved, has better: burgers and ice cream drinks. That's ice cream. With liquor. Is this a Wisconsin thing? I haven't experienced it anywhere else, but maybe there's an ice cream drink underworld I've yet to discover. This probably makes no sense to most readers, but one if my only complaints about this place is the portion size--and not that it's too small. Now, I can chow down. But I had trouble finishing my burger, a rarity for me. Maybe it was just an off day for me, but personally, I would have preferred a smaller, juicier burger than a large "okay" burger. It needed a little more cooking--I ordered rare, which I tend to take to mean lukewarm in the center but very red/bloody; the center was still very much cold (not chilly. Cold.) Maybe folks don't usually order rare, but you should know how to prepare it. Half a star down for that. Top that off with an ice cream drink to share between two, and I knew the rest of the evening would be spent resting my stomach in a pair of sweatpants. That's where the other half star comes in: I wish either the waitress or the menu had mentioned how large these drinks are. We asked her afterwards how many customers finish the drink, and she told me that often times groups of people (comprised of more than two, as we were) come in to share them. Well, now I feel piggish. For the record, we could only finish half of it, and of course taking an ice cream drink home is (probably?) illegal. Open...container? Besides messy. We wondered (to each other, not the waitress) if they had a kid size, then realized what we were saying. But overall, for a weekday evening the service was wonderful (except for above), the happy hour special ($5 select martinis and cheap domestics) kept some money in my pocket for Tums, and overall the food was right at that 4 mark.
