We came to The Lauber for the first time on Sunday, September 5 at about 3pm with a party of two for a late lunch. This was our first time here and first time in South Bend. We were driving between Chicago and Cleveland and this was our lunch stop. Our server was great. He was very busy; however, everyone in the restaurant chipped in and made the service a good experience. There is ample seating both indoors and outdoors. We opted for the indoor seating. We shared both the Prime Melt and the Dippity Dough Da. The Prime Melt was absolutely fantastic, so flavorful and delicious. The Dippity Dough Da was great as well. I do wish the dough ring was just a little larger than it currently is; however, the dipping sauce that we picked (buffalo chicken dip) was simply stunning. It was oh so good. We took a slice of the Brown Butter Cake to go and ate it about 2 hours further into our drive. It just melts in your mouth, and it was so decadent and rich. I would definitely return to The Lauber again in the future, if my travels brought me to South Bend. read more

Got in quickly on a Saturday evening. The food and drinks were delicious, and our server, Charles, was very attentive. We went with two other families, with kids at different tables, and Charles kept up on the three tabs seamlessly. Came for dinner and tried several things. First the tin can nachos- honestly a little disappointed. Great presentation and portion, but was definitely lacking in flavor. Nothing great by any means. Also tried the shishito peppers- these were incredible! Not spicy at all but were PACKED with flavor. The power salad with salmon was fresh, crisp, and flavorful as well. The Green Goat pizza was absolutely phenomenal. Pesto was fresh and the goat cheese and tomatoes complimented it so well. The Butcher Town pizza was also incredible. Every time I'm in town, I seem to find myself here. The ambiance is good and I haven't ever had bad service. I haven't gotten many things on the menu, but what I have has been good. The sleeper dish for me is the soups. I've tried three different types of soups and they've all been really good. I've tried the chicken and dumplings, clam chowder, and most recently the mushroom and brie. They all have been super creamy and delicious. Nice setting and ambience, but I was expecting so much more from such a nice-looking place. I tried this place while visiting from out of town with my daughter. She ordered the burger and I had the French dip. We also ordered the Brussels sprouts appetizer. The food was so plain and flavorless that my daughter didn't finish her burger and I couldn't continue hoping against hope for something tasty by eating the second half of the French dip. Even the tea was flat tasting! The highlight of the meal was the Brussels sprout appetizer which was just... sad. Service was also somewhat slow and, at the end of the meal, the receipt had suggested tip calculations that started at 25%. I understand this is a smaller town, and that the pace of life may be somewhat slower here, but suggesting a 25% tip as a minimum is pushing the bounds of decency and reasonableness. On the plus side, it's a great-LOOKING place and whoever programmed the musical selections has excellent taste in music. We heard some Linkin Park and at least a couple of Metallica tunes. Can't go wrong with those... unless you pair them with this food. read more

We sat inside due to the wait time for outside. The food was okay. We got the nacho appetizer and split a pizza. Granted we didn't get their signature dishes, so I really think this is our fault, but the food was okay. Nachos were just weird lol nothing tasted bad, just wasn't what I expected from a place that looks like this. Next time I will get the salmon! The service was okay, our waiter was nice enough but I could definitely tell they were slightly annoyed we needed assistance figuring out what to order haha! A great place to eat at, a better place to rent an entire tent. Benefitted from my family renting their tent with heated lamps (d/t COVID) which was an added plus to the evening. Close to the river and Corby's Irish Pub it is a great way to start a night out. I would also be remiss if I did not mention their service. Specifically, our waiter, Charles, was fantastic and formed a connection with our entire group. As for the food, I'll mention the top 4 items for the major types of "picky" eaters: 1) The "showstopper" pizza - arugula with chicken. The size will definitely fill you up if you decide to get this as your entree. You could consider splitting with someone if you add an appetizer. This is what you should expect from an artisan pizza; lived up to expectations. 2) the Lauber burger - 2, 1/4 pound patties with melted cheese. Picture attached. I really enjoyed this. It was well made and every part of the burger was quality made. It is hard to differentiate yourself with a burger but I will definitely remember this. Definitely recommend. 3) The prime melt - essentially a French dip. This is what they are known for (according to their menu). Supposedly, it tasted great and lived up to expectations. Their bread is great and the dipping sauce is exactly what you would want. There is less meat than in other French dips but it is a higher quality so the trade off makes sense. 4) the "Paratha" wrap - VEGETARIAN. This is a great meatless option and again, the tortilla (bread) stands out. The feta and olive tapenade gives a great Mediterranean kick. However, on the side you get two quinoa burgers which are plated to look like the main dish. Honestly, I found them to lack any taste and to really just be a placeholder. Other family members got the tin can nachos and they enjoyed them. I decided against them because I thought the chip/toppings ratio was too high. Ended up getting the "dippity dough da" with buffalo chicken dip which was exactly what you hope for. The dipping bread balls were tremendous. Recommend. All in all, I'd say this place is a great spot for a south bend night out. 8.8/10 read more

Visited The Lauber last week with my son. Hadn't been there in a while. You have have a reservation, especially on weekends as it gets very busy. There is definitely a fun buzz and high energy there which is great on a Friday night to kickoff the weekend. The service was excellent from the welcome to our excellent server. I wish I could recall his name as he was one of the best servers I have had in a long time. He checked in an appropriate number of times but was never intrusive. The cocktails were very good. Just the right amount of kick. The food was delicious with many vegetarian options (I'm trying to eat more plant based). The hummus was just st spicy enough and the Green and Garlic pizza was perfect. So satisfying. I'll be back soon. read more

Really disappointed in what happened tonight. We usually have a good experience there. But this visit we ordered and got our meals and as our son was eating his salad he found a metal screw in it. We told our server, who then told the manager. The real problem with all of this is the manager's lackadaisical response. They sent our server (who was great incidentally) over with an explanation and apology, but we were surprised this didn't escalate to the manager taking action themselves. They did comp his meal, but coming to our table to say they were sorry or check on our son would've made a much better impression. read more

Really liked this place. The jalapeño appetizer was awesome. So good I got it 2 days in a row. Not sure if the tomato sauce is supposed to be hot or not, but one day it was and the other it was not. Kinda weird, but I liked it hot way better. Fries here were terrible though. First batch came out bad, thought maybe they were cold so asked for a hot batch- They came out just as bad.
