Been hearing/reading about this place for a long time and haven't made it in until now. My expectations were sky high based on reviews and the difficulty with getting a reservation in the past.
The off street parking was nice, a lot of places in Buffalo don't have private parking. The exterior is completely unassuming, you wouldn't even know Left Bank was inside unless you were looking for it. Bar area was spacious and had your typical modern exposed brick and edidson bulb vibe going on. I did appreciate the art hanging on the walls which gave it something to set itself apart from every other similar styled place. Cocktails were very good at the bar and on par with other higher quality spots in the GBA. Prices as well, ~$10 a drink and ~$6 a beer.
Dining room was really great I thought and had a nice intimate feel without being on top of another table. The raised landing is a nice touch. Really like the layout of the room and the various art in that room as well. Table settings were A+, love the single candle. Old school and something no one does anymore, they all go with the standard votive. Service was very good, able to discuss the specials from memory and the ingredients. Attentive when it comes to drinks, water, and changing flatware between courses.
Dining room is LOUD however, probably from the exposed brick and smaller space. A chittery dining room is a good thing as it shows a restaurant has life, but at certain levels it's intrusive.
Now for the most important part, the food. The bread served with the oil or whatever it was was ok but lacked any flavor. I would have just preferred olive oil with salt and spices if you're gonna serve me bland dipping oil.
First course we split the fondue for two. Absolutely fantastic. The tenderloin is worth the price of admission alone, coupled with roquefort fondue. I'm a blue cheese fan so that's just a double whammy for me. Asparagus, mushroom fries, toasted points were all very good as well. Have to order this.
Entrees were actually a bit underwhelming given my expectations. I ordered the day boat scallops which were rather small and had a pretty strong flavor which was kinda off putting. The jasmine rice and broccoli raab accompiaments were plain and the pea shoots didn't do anything for the dish. Butter sauce was fine but not enough to save the bland entree. Overall not anything I would ever order again. The pasta is not made in house which was disappointing. Portions are MASSIVE which isn't a big thing for me. Give me a normal portion of high quality any day over a huge portion of something mediocre. The vemiicelli dish was good but not anything better than I've had at many other places, and less impressive than some excellent Italian places I've been. Pasta and seafood linguini was similar, massive portion of just a slightly above average dish I thought. Really just not impressed with the entrees which should be the home run course of any great restaurant.
Dessert we split some kind of chocolate pie that was fantastic. The house made whipped cream that was prepared without a ton of sugar, giving it a nice offsetting quality to the extremely sweet and rich pie, was a nice touch. Coffee was good.
I will definitely come back because there's too much potential here that I may just need to steer clear of seafood and pasta and enjoy truly remarkable meals. The tenderloin I did try was magnificent, and beef is my forte, so next time I think I'll go that route and see how it goes. As of now though my opinion is Left Bank does not live up to the hype. read more
