I absolutely love supporting small local businesses and The Local Baker is an Upland must-try. The owners who I assume are husband and wife are delightful. They will always greet you with a smile and make you feel appreciated. I like to get the Vegetarian Pizza here and take it to go. They bake the pizzas fresh in a stove oven and use fresh vegetables with a really good tomato sauce and light cheese the way I like it. The veggie pizza is topped with bell peppers, onions, spinach and mushrooms which I substituted with artichokes. The crust has more of a baked quality and doesn't have an ounce of grease on it. If it's possible for a pizza to be healthy, this is it. The cookies are fantastic here. Soft, chewy, fresh. I like to get an assortment each time so I can try them all. But it's just the opposite. The back was so busy with cake decorators, the front cases were filled with fresh baked pastries, and the owner was so kind and accommodating. Have lived in Upland for 16+years and never noticed this gem. We were across the street for an appt and decided to give it a try. Not a lot of people there but people were coming and going and were picking up orders. My husband and I shared the chicken salad sandwich on a croissant and the corned beef sandwich on a baguette. I Would by far say our favorite was the corned beef on the baguette. The baguette was warm and soft in the middle but crispy on the outside. The sliced fresh potato chips that come on the side were absolutely amazing. I will definitely be back. I am a baker myself so I wasn't dazzled by the cookies but they had a good variety and the pecan bar looked delicious. Since my family doesn't really care for pecan bars I would never make them but it's nice to get a good bar somewhere. Next time I'll try that. The Ambiance was nice. We sat outside and they brought us our food. Customer service is top notch. Don't be turned off by the appearance from the outside or lack of people. Go on in and try something good. I was in the area before work much earlier than normal so searched around for a decent bakery. Stumbled on this place. It was crazy rainy and no one was around, but walking around I was immediately greeted by what I presume is the owner? A middle aged man smiled at me genuinely, giving me information since I hadn't been there before but not at all pressuring me to get one thing or another. Gave me all the time I needed to decide and was very nice throughout the interaction, even trading out all the spare change in my wallet for dollar bills. The pastries are worth the drive if you are not a local. My favorite has to be the royale cookie. It has chocolate chip, coconut, and nuts. They even make them in a shape so it can be served with ice cream. Ordered the American pizza (pepperoni) it was pretty good. It's baked in a stone oven so nice, thin and crispy. Sad. It's Sunday morning and barely anything in the bakers case. They sell small items yet I'm told that unless you spend $10, it's cash only. Two bagels and one juice, 5.50...boohoo Luckily for them I scraped up change, but still...I hate cash, please don't ask each to carry it. They only had one OJ left, we split it but they lost the sale of another....maybe if they actually had stuff I wanted and oj in Stock I would have easily racked up $10 in baked goods si u wouldn't have had to pay cash. The coffee was Folgers. ..boo again....this is a bakery. I expect better and could have made Folgers at home, but I don't like it there either :-( The lady I believed was the owner was nice but got confused and didn't ring up the coffee, then said it's ok and didn't charge us.....again....had she did it right we might have made that $10 limit. At first, I wasn't sure I was in the right spot because I noticed a big neon sign that read that they sell pizza, but I walked in and saw there were minimal items left since I had gotten there about 30 min before closing. The lady that worked there was sweet and she was willing to frost a message on my cake that I picked even though she was not the cake decorator. The attention and service I received here was very positive and memorable, the service alone is what will bring me back. She also had an "Italia" shirt on (viva fellow Italians!) Since I got a day old cake, I was expecting it to taste dry and somewhat stale. I'm telling you, three days into having this cake on our kitchen table, it magically STILL was just as moist and sweet as if it had just come out of the oven. Including the frosting! Pros: The french dip sandwich was delicious.. fresh soft bread and good roast beef. Cons: Not much meat in the French Dip sandwich. Side of macaroni salad has waaaay too much dressing. Plate of lunch was plain and unattractive. The pastries were just ok and not made fresh daily, We were told the pineapple upside down cake was 2 days old and the berry filled pastry might have been very good the day it was made but tasted days old and dry. NO BATHROOM! When we asked where the bathroom was we were told they don't have one. I said to the guy I thought restaurants had to have one AND he so NO "it's posted on our front door". I'm not saying it's not on the door somewhere... but we looked on the way out and saw no such statement. He told us they send people down the block and across the street to the gas station for restrooms and pointed us on our way. The restroom in the gas station was absolutely FILTHY! read more
