The Loft is a great neighborhood bar. They have a very spacious oval style bar top where you can sit on either side of the bartender. Theres great drinks, a jukebox, good people and pool so you'll always find yourself in the mist of a good time. Then there's Kane, he is an amazing bartender and person. He is fast and efficient, he interacts with his patrons and will keep you entertained. Not to mention he isn't bad to look at! All and all I highly recommend The Loft, especially on Saturday and Sunday nights. read more

Last Saturday, 2:45pm-- We walk up to Hash House, starving. CLOSED until 5pm. We cross the street to try for Tractor Room Same bad news, CLOSED. I full on, say out loud, "This is unbelievable. I am so pissed right now. I need a drink." My honey points across the street. " There's a bar right there if you really need a drink." What happens when you combine: a) a dark, dive-y, intimate, machismo-and-testosterone-laden atmosphere featuring a pool table, red brick walls, and the stiffest gin-and-tonics that you'll ever taste with b) a soundtrack featuring Lady Gaga over and over and over again, and patrons who are delightfully oblivious to the fact that they've heard the same song pulsing over the speakers half a dozen times over the course of an hour? The answer is The Loft, obviously, which is one of my favorite dives in San Diego. Tucked away on the corner of 5th and Brookes, the Loft is invisible to most of the people careening up toward Hillcrest looking for a flashier place to get their drink on. But for the regulars here, The Loft is home. When I was here last night (Saturday), the place was buzzing. The seats were filled with people of all shapes, sizes, colors, ages and orientations, and everybody was chatting it up like there was no tomorrow. Such a great local hangout for locals like myself and visitors alike. Smaller than most Bars in Hillcrest but just the right size if you're looking to relax, have a drink, and meet new people. Friendly staff, strong drinks and a fun atmosphere. If you're looking for a dance floor, a clicky crowd, a light show with bells and whistles, this isn't the place for you but if you want to have fun, and make lasting memories with great people than this is the place for you. This bar is racist! Appears that they don't want African Americans in their establishment. 3 couples walked in and the entire population at the bar (all Caucasian) turned around and looked at us like we were not supposed to be there. In addition, the staff didn't acknowledge us even after walking up to the bar to order a drink. Sad day in America when this kind of racism still exists. read more

This is definitely my favorite gay bar. It's super chill, the drinks are decently priced and nice pours. They treat me like family every time I come in. Fun dive at the end of the night. Bartenders are hilarious. Joe is awesome and from my hometown Chicago. I walked in wearing a Cubs tee-shirt and that's how we started yapping about Chicago. On the TVs was an old video about the leather convention in Chicago which I still haven't checked out. Seemed like a place where everyone knows your name bc there was a constant stream of people coming in to hang out w the bartenders. They all did a number of shots with my date and he had fun. First time here last night in about 10 years. Just as small as I remember, but I went fairly late on a weeknight, so the place was not so busy you couldn't get a seat and a drink right away. The bartender on duty (sorry, I forgot his name) immediately introduced himself and had a great, positive energy, and NONE of the attitude you usually get at gay bars. He made me feel welcome. He was super nice, and kept checking on me to make sure me and my drink were okay. We were! I didn't order anything fancy, but the final tab for two cocktails was what you might pay for one cocktail somewhere else. A very pleasant surprise indeed! One of the "regulars" also struck up a conversation with me and again, made me feel like part of the team (thanks Diego from San Diego) I will definitely be going back to The Loft to get good, friendly service alongside some cheap drinks! read more

Stepping into the Loft for the first time was a wee little bit scary as appearances from the outside (and inside too I suppose) can be deceiving. Don't let the dark facade of the old, dingy bar scenery scare you away! Upon our arrival, Trevor provided our group of 10 slightly roudy and jubilant birthday celebratees, with prompt and pleasant service. The Loft's loyal patrons were exceptionally friendly, and the price of the drinks was extremely inexpensive while not sparing on the amount of alcholol per cocktail. A return to the Loft for afternoon cocktails is imminent! I was also told patrons of Hashhouse can order drinks at the Loft while waiting for a table...the Loft will actually phone in a reservation to Hashouse while you wait! read more

The Loft is a great bar to hang out on a morning and drink $4 Mimosas or Bloody Mary's. Great atmosphere and moreover great people. Learned a lot from locals in the area. Went here while we waited for a table at hash house a go go. We were having so much fun we gave up our table at hash house a go go - which apparently nobody does! The drinks were cheap, strong, and delicious! Get a bloody mary by kip! We didn't realize it was a gay bar until we had been there for a drink or two, but we were very welcome and enjoyed the crowd of regulars very much!
