This is a new cute bagel place in Short North in the Fireproof building. They have a few parking spots in front of the place which was super nice! I popped into The Lox this morning after hearing a lot of hype over the past month. To start with, the space is great - sleek, modern, clean, and vibrant. Definitely something that is welcoming and fits in well in the heart of short north. I glanced over the menu for a few minutes (various bagels with various cream cheeses, bagel sandwiches, and coffee and other drinks) and opted for an everything bagel with cream cheese. It came to $3.25 in total. As a note, this place does not accept cash, so bring your cards with you. Please keep in mind that the store was not packed. There were people inside but the line was 3 people deep when I got there. Nothing like some of the bagel lines you see in big cities like New York. This point brings me to my biggest gripe: I waited for OVER 20 FREAKING MINUTES to get my to-go bagel. This is ridiculous, and seems to be consistent with the experiences that others have had. Now I get it - some people like to derp around in bagels shops on a Sunday afternoon. I am not one of those people. 20 minutes is how long I would expect a meal at a restaurant to take, not a toasted bagel with plain cream cheese. When you look at bagel places in NYC or Chicago, you'd expect to wait under 5 minutes for your food. As far as the bagel goes, it was bang average. Combine an average product with a terrible wait time and you result in a place that I won't be back to. read more

I waited deliberately to post a review. Having lived in New York and being a huge bagel fan my excitement for Lox was only tempered by my fear for my waistline. The first visit I was a bit disappointed. The bagels were okay, but overshadowed by the 10+mins wait to order and 20mins wait for my food to come out. I though the results in the end were fine, my wife (admittedly less a bagel fan than I) was underwhelmed. The second time was similar, though I had a bagel sandwich with pastrami, novel, but still feel like Lox was putting its best foot forward, perhaps because it was again such a busy weekend. Perhaps Lox was just a victim of their own success. Today was my third visit, Tuesday morning at 9am, trying to take wait out of the mix, and I finally feel I can come to a final consensus: It's fine. First of all these are not NYC bagels (and I question anyone who thinks they are). Yes they're bread, shaped like a doughnut, boiled & baked, covered with the usual assortment of toppings (everything, sea salt & herb, and others). But just look at the crumb shot and you'll miss the big, thick, puffy, chewy, almost doughy texture you'll find from Brooklyn bodegas to Esse Bagel. They're flat, thin, stretched so wide you wonder if they're trying to save on dough. The breakfast bagel sandwiches (which the majority of folks seem to be having) have mostly good, classic fillings like sausage, bacon, or lox (credit for the pastrami idea, sadly no Taylor ham). Unremarkable cheese and eggs. The issues here are twofold. The combination of cheese, eggs, meat, and one assumes cooking method leads to a somewhat greasy sandwich, amplified by the second issue; their unexpected sandwich sauce. In all the bagel shops I've been to I've never met a similar sort of sauce thrown by default on breakfast sandwiches. Muddies the whole thing and adds to the over the top slipperiness. It's satisfying in greasy spoon diner sort of way, but not what I generally expect or necessarily want. Coffee was fine but not notable, which is disappointing after upgrading to their single origin Columbia. Given it's made en mass in the same urns as most non speciality shops I suppose that's forgivable, esp since I don't expect much after years of the Greek diner cups. More on that later. The space itself is pretty, comfortable, modern and overall pleasant. Flow on busy days is miserable, lines snaking across the front windows and people waiting for carry out everywhere and anywhere. Given those are 15+min waits on the weekends that's pretty uncomfortable. All of this culminates in the last issue: cost. Now I'm willing to pay for good food, doubly so for good bagels outside of bagel heaven in NYC. A sausage egg and cheese sandwich with a cup of coffee and two dollar tip for $16.50?! That's insane. Maybe if they comped themselves against Northstar or Philco that seems to make sense, but bagel shops in NYC, Washington DC, Seattle, and San Francisco still only charge $5-6 for the same bagel and $1 for coffee. Ultimate I think I'm shouting into the wind. I think it's too long a wait and too expensive for a middling product that doesn't so much scratch the itch of the grocery/bagel shop under my building I used to go to every morning. Instead it reminds me of that place and makes me wish I was getting a real bagel instead, in half the time at half the price. I think the Dublin and Westerville crowd will flood it every weekend and they'll do enough of the Short North office worker crowd during the week (esp as they're pivoting hard into lunch type sandwiches). I admit I'll even stop in again, when I'm really really jonsing for it, but without a drastic change I expect to leave longing for a flight to LaGuardia (and if that doesn't underline my disappointment & despair nothing will). read more

The Lox was a perfect breakfast stop during our stay at the Graduate hotel- it was just steps from the back door! I'll dream about the vegan lox sandwich until the next time I'm in Columbus. I used to love a good lox bagel before I stopped eating meat, and this was perfect and possibly even better than I remember the real deal being! I'm not vegan, just vegetarian, so I substituted the vegan cream cheese for roasted garlic cream cheese, whereas my husband opted for the beet and thyme cream cheese. We both went with the herb and salt bagel and both agreed that our respective combinations were pretty fantastic. A bystander stopped us during breakfast and asked, "What did you guys order?" My husband and I both replied with our order of vegan lox sandwiches, and he said, "I'll have to get that next time. It looks really good." Indeed it was, dude. Truly a godsend to the neighborhood! The short north desperately needed a bagel place. Amazing!!! I don't know if I got lucky or if this place has changed but the wait for food was less than 5 minutes (unlike some of the reviews below). Also, parking was free and easy in their lot (granted spots are limited but there were two available when we got here around 1130am on a holiday Monday). Overall, service was exceptional. They got us a high chair, gave our kid stickers, accommodated my preferences for no sauce, a different cheese, etc. Now for the most important part, the food!!! I grew up in Brooklyn and still go back often. These bagels are not NYC bagels but they are legit. And by "legit", I mean super delicious. I haven't been able to find anything as good as a nyc bagel anywhere but here. We got the lox with lax, cream cheese, pickled onions, etc. and it was outstanding. We also got the pastrami which I had the Swiss substituted out for cheddar and it came with mustard and picked onions. It was really, really good. The pastrami slices were very thick and filling. We also got coffee. I drink mine black so I can appreciate the taste. This tasted like average Colombian coffee. Nothing exceptional. But, I came here for the bagels, not the coffee. read more

This place was really highly hyped and I have to say I'm really disappointed by it. We got two lox sandwiches, one on an everything and one on a sea salt & herb bagels, for $12.50 each. I would have added an egg but that option was $14.50--more than I could rationalize paying for a bagel sandwich. We arrived right at 8am so would supposedly have gotten the freshest bagels of the day, but both the were thin and verrry tough. The lox itself was great, and though the amount of cream cheese was a little aggressive for me, it was similar to most lox sandwiches I've had elsewhere. Unfortunately struggling to bite into the tough dough of the bagel really distracted from the fillings inside. There are much cheaper lox bagels elsewhere in Columbus and was annoyed to have paid so much for this. On the positive side, their marketing and aesthetic is ON POINT and fits perfectly into the Short North. I love the logo and the fresh feel of the restaurant. Not sure why it has taken me so long to try this place?! I've been meaning to go for lunch and finally got the chance to go this past weekend! The worker suggested the pastrami bagel sandwich, which was MOUTHWATERING! So much flavor and the pastrami was incredible. I also tried the potatoes on the side, which only comes with two small pieces but it was enough after all the carbs from the bagel. The interior is very modern and admirable! It reminded me of a gourmet bagel shop that probably exists somewhere in NYC. Great spot to stop for morning bagel before hitting the road! Our hotel was across the street so this little bagelry was convenient for us to grab something to eat before continuing our trip. We had the loc sandwich on both an everything bagel and an herb bagel and both were delicious. Loved the touch of pickled onions on the bagel. The lox was super fresh and the bagels were perfect. I enjoy getting bagels in NY. And I even even enjoy the no nonsense rushed NY style of counter service- it gets the job done w/o being rude. But THIS??? OH HELL NO! This is a joke! We spent over $30 to be handed a bag with two mediocre bagel sandwiches in it. When I thought our order was mistakenly rung in as 'to go' I was told very abruptly by the young woman with messy long blond hair that all orders come in bags. Apparently the only way to be served on a tray is to be an employee on break- (like the person next to us) then you can take space at a table and eat off a tray like a civilized person while making paying customers hold their little bags and wait against the wall for a seat. I managed a sandwich shop for several years - so its a bit personal for me when I see such blatant disregard for customers. Such an epic fail. I really, really wanted to like this place. I've been watching their social media like a hawk, waiting for the day I could try it out. And if I could, I'd give 2.5/5 stars rather than just 2. You come in, grab a menu, place your order and then it is called out to you when it's ready. Nice and easy. I went with my girlfriend. I ordered the veggie lunch sandwich on everything (no cream cheese) and she ordered the lox bagel on everything. We were planning on paying separately but when she went to pay we found out that they don't take cash? Which is pretty aggravating. Our total ended up being $23 with tax, which even for "handmade bagels" is steep. Our food came out in a timely fashion. My sandwich had golden beets, mushrooms, pickled carrots and broccolini on it, all tossed in a miso dressing. The flavor of the dressing was very good and the vegetables were crisp. But there was SO much dressing on the vegetables that I couldn't taste the flavor of any of them and it left my bagel soggy and dripping everywhere. I had to take multiple napkins to try and soak up the oil but gave up in the end and couldn't finish it. The bagel itself was alright, with a nice everything coating, crusty outside and chewy inside. But it didn't wow me. It was just alright. My girlfriend had a better time with her sandwich but we both left pretty disappointed. Overall, it wasn't terrible, but not what I felt like was worth the money and I probably won't be back. I think it'll be a successful place and I wish the owners the best, but it felt a lot more like it was just a sandwich spot rather than a bagel spot. read more

Super cute breakfast/brunch spot in the short north!! I got the turkey bagel on the seat salt and herb bagel and it was absolutely delicious! I thought that it was going to be very hard to eat but the bagel was a good size and not too thick. The mustard and pickled onions were the perfect toppings to give it a nice flavor. They have a lot of different options in terms of flavor and price, so if you're on a budget but still want to try a cute new breakfast spot this is perfect! I have a small obsession for bagels...and finally a legit bagel shop in Columbus! I headed here during opening day around 1pm and snatched one of the last everything bagels on my way to work. It was smouthered in the lox cream cheese and I decided that if I could, I would start every shift this way... This is a solid 4 star spot in my book. I'll make sure to update if I order anything fancier next visit, but I'm kind of a plain bagel and cream cheese kinda girl. We stopped in about 30 minutes until close, which I hate doing, but I figured we could be in and out really quick with just bagel sandwiches. We were. The kitchen was quick to have them to us and we scarfed them down! I ordered the everything bagel with chive cream cheese. It was delicious. Great little gem in the heart of Columbus. The server was very nice who took our order. I could not tell you what the inside was like, cleanliness, etc.... darn you Corona!! The Lox has such a beautiful environment and great presentation on food. However, I wasn't the happiest with my bagel, and my friend wasn't a fan of hers either. I got the lox bagel (which I usually love) and it was rather disappointing. I don't really love vinegar tasting food like pickled items so I took the capers off of the sandwich. The menu didn't state that the onions were pickled and the cucumber was also pickled (pickles). This sort of ruined the bagel for me. My friend got a sausage egg and cheese, and the sausage didn't taste like what you would normally find on a breakfast sandwich. I was pretty excited to come here but after spending $13 on a bagel that wasn't enjoyable (and not accurately stated on the menu) there's not a likely chance of me coming back. A perfect example of what a bagel should be. Yesterday I stopped by for a sea salt and herb bagel. I hadn't tried Lox, however I have been hearing for a while that I needed to sample one (if not more) of the amazing bagels. I ordered mine with butter. The bagel had the right amount of chewiness to it and was perfectly toasted. The location is a little small near the register, particularly if there is a long line or you are waiting for a to go order. The overall food and decor win out however make you forget the small space. I loved the minimalist, modern design and the "everything is everything," quote on the wall.
