Went here for lunch today because they accept credit cards and I didn't have cash for anyplace else. The place seems very clean (all that stainless steel), and the service was great. My veggie sammie came toasted, which was awesome. And that's pretty much as far as my compliments go. You see, I am a full-time vegetarian. This means that I eat vegetables because that's what I can eat, not because it's what I feel like today. So I'm pretty discerning when it comes to veggie fare. Yes, my sandwich was chock-full of veggies. Problem was, it tasted like a salad on a roll. Not a sandwich. A bread-wrapped salad. The single layer of cheese couldn't be tasted between the spinach, romaine, carrot slices, avocado, red onions, and who knows what else on the sandwich. Without that, you're eating raw veggies on bread with mustard. Oh, and the olive spread, while probably very tasty on other things, was a bit strange on my already confused sandwich. Look, kudos to actually having sliced cheddar. Subway can't claim that. But consider, for a moment, how much flavor a single slice imparts, and the savings incurred because I'm not eating your in-house cooked meats, and for goodness' sake, put on another slice. It's not like these things are footlongs, either. I just can't help but think of Kinder's and their glory of a veggie sandwich, and how I spent as much today on a sammie and small soup from The Lunch Box as I would on a sandwich combo AND godzilla pickle there. (Not to mention, get a double layer of smoked cheddar.) Good try, but the food's not quite there. read more

Came here with 2 of my coworkers and I think I would go back again for good prices, good portion and friendly services. You placed your order 1st then wait for your name to be called. We had Buffalo and Asian Chicken Wrap and both were very delicious. I like how they put kidney beans in the buffalo wrap and lots of fresh veggies to the Asian chicken. Good portion of meat and veggies, some sort of wheat wrap and good sauce. The buffalo was more flavorful than the other ones. I have worked in this area since 2008, and have been by this restaurant on many occasions and I have never went there until yesterday. I went there with a co-worker, who also had never been there; however, like me, she had heard of it as well. I ordered a Chicken Caesar wrap, and I bought a bag of chips and soda that came to about $10.50. The Chicken wrap was tasty, but I wish that there was more Caesar dressing on the wrap. I've been coming to the Lunch Box for about six months now. The food is fantastic, reasonably priced (about $6-$8) and fast. I try to get in before 11:45 or so to beat the rush. Even when they're busy, the whole operation is very efficient and things move quickly. The owners are fantastic and seem to be on a first name basis with all their regulars. They always go out of their way to make sure we are well taken care of. They also have a punch card-- buy 12 meals, get 1 free. Not a bad deal. We all need to eat anyway, right? My go-to sandwich is the brisket. It's hard to beat. There are dozens of options, bread and topping combinations, so it will take a while to get bored. f I'm in a salad or soup mood, they've got me covered too. I never walk away hungry! I bring home the caramel apples for my wife. She loves them and they're only $3! As a native of the city I've passed this place many times as a kid going to school in the area. Finally stopped in yesterday and had my 1st Tuna Salad and it was DELICIOUS had to share some with my granny and she agreed as while. ALL the INGREDIENTS were fresh and flavorful. I get lunch here WAY too often, but that's because the food is great, the prices are great, the employees are really friendly and it's hard to get bored of the food since there are so many different types of sandwiches. The owner is often there, she's really nice and fun to talk to while waiting for my sandwich. She remembers my name, makes fun of me for wearing sandals all the time, and we joke around a lot. They cook all their own meat including brisket, turkey, and roasted beef. I even like the chicken and tuna salad sandwiches even though I don't like mayo because they don't use much mayo at all - the ratio is perfect. If you have any questions about what to order, just ask - I've always gotten good recommendations and now I've tried just about everything they make. You can also order sandwiches that aren't specifically on the menu (i.e. Chicken Parmesan, Buffalo Chicken sandwich), I've heard stories of some weird creations that people come up with and they will make it. If you don't want a sandwich, try a salad or the daily special which are just as good. I've never done it, because I like taking a break to wait for my food, but you can call ahead with your order for yourself or a group. They have a nice selection of sandwiches and make nearly all the ingredients on premise. Yes, Ike's is good too. But you'll be waiting forever at that place. The Lunchbox basically keeps my organization going. I never go there without seeing at least 2 co-workers there. That is impressive given the amount of places to eat within 4 blocks of my office and the fact that it is a pretty small office. I eat here regulary for quick lunches. The roast turkey and BBQ brisket are both good bets. The roast turkey is carved off the bird, not cold cuts, and the Brisket is always juicy. It gets busy, but they clearly work hard to get you your food efficiently. On the busiest of days, I've rarely waited more than 5 minutes. Prices are good, and meats are really well prepared. Can't ask for much more for a speed lunch takeout. Every once in a while theyll rock the "chicken dumpling" soup which is really good too. Skippy dang good! There's something magical about their turkey on seeded wheat sandwiches. I've tried to divine what it is that makes them so good but can only guess it's the symphony of ingredients and the light crunchy toast finish. I don't think they use artisanal/organic/otherwise noteworthy ingredients or anything - it's more like an old-school place that just knows how to make a tasty sandwich. It's a small, busy and efficient operation, and staff is polite but not overly chatty. I could see how the rush-hour vibe might put off those looking for an experience rather than a super good sandwich delivered as quickly as possible, but it doesn't seem to have hurt their business. The sandwich roll shape reminded me of the days I was working at Subway, and that was offputting. Yet, when I bit in it tasted fresh, fresh, fresh, and the bread was delicious. I could taste honey in there with the strong wheat. My cheese was melted inside too, very good. I only wish I had a bit more avocado, and their included olive spread. Lunch Box is an ordinary sandwich shop from the outside, but really, it is anything but ordinary. When you have owners that remember you by your voice without saying your name on the phone or an establishment that make you come back day after day for the exact same order without geting tired of it, you know you have something good. Service: The owners of the shop are a husband and wife. I always interacted with the husband when I worked in Oakland and stopped here everyday for lunch. He always remembered me and even my order after a couple visits, which is such a nice touch. You don't get that a lot and considering the volume of customers that Lunch Box gets, I was both touched and impressed! The servers that make your sandwich are all patient when taking your order and make sure to get it right. Your food is bound to take a little bit of time, especially during lunch hours. But that's entirely due to the volume of orders rather than poor service. So DEFINITELY ORDER AHEAD! Atmosphere: Not much place to sit so it's definitely a better idea to pick up your food and go somewhere else to eat. There are a couple bar stools but with the store always being so crowded, not really a good place to sit and have lunch. Food: The shop offers a huge variety of sandwiches, wraps, and salads. They also have a prepared food section full of macaroni/potato salads, chips, drinks, and cookies. They also have a couple soups they offer every day. My absolute favorite is the vegetable soup that the owner their makes himself. It is such a great addition with your sandwich, or you can do half soup half sandwich combo. The soup is seasoned perfectly and it has a lot of vegetables like brocoli, cauliflower, and carrots. My favorite sandwich is the avocado cheese. This is my staple sandwich for a number of reasons. It's so simple yet so tasty! I get it on wheat with banana peppers and balsamic dressing. Definitely add some toppings for a kick to your sandwich because without them it might be a little plain. But the sandwich is great everytime I get it, which shows a level of quality many establishments don't have! They always put tons of toppings so you never feel like your sandwich is too light and despite how many alterations and additions my order may have, it always comes out right! While the price is a little higher than you might pay at an ordinary sandwich shop, the quality and quantity you receive at The Lunch Box is differentiable and worth the extra dollar or two. Verdict: Unfortunately I don't work in the area anymore so I don't get to frequent this place as much as I used to. But when I am back, I will definitely stop by for my favorite avocado cheese sandwich and vegetable soup. read more
