It's not as great at night, it gets pretty crowded and all they play is rap music or r and b, it is NOT what you would expect to be playing when you open the door. We've been going to The Mack for awhile and it's so hit and miss. Its getting hard to suggest The Mack for food because lately it's been a waste of time. We ordered wings to go a few weeks ago and when we got them home they were so burnt, honestly cannot believe they thought they were servable. Then yesterday we ordered a pizza and I wouldn't even call it medicore. For the price, I'd much rather spend a few more dollars and go somewhere else and enjoy it. I was really looking forward to going to this place, I had heard nothing but good things about it! We got there around 7:15 on a Friday night and it was pretty busy! Ordered some fried pickles along with our meals. But then waited for about 45 mins to even get out fried pickles (which were very good!) then our food came out and that was a while different story... I was really excited about my bun being branded like all the other pics on here! But instead I got a big glob of mayonnaise smeared on the top of my bun. The fries were different than the tastey looking fries on this app. No season and we're cold. My fiancé got a pizza (which is why we thought it took so long, bc you know.. sometimes pizzas take a while to make!) nope! Pizza was cold too. We just moved in 1 block away from Macklind (previously from Lafayette square) and very excited to visit our local bars. We are STL natives and love our city! We are extremely disappointed in our experience at The Mack. We arrived around 9pm to have some drinks and appetizers while a few minutes before the bar closed we were asked by Dan, who hesitated before he told us his name, to look at our clocks to see what time it was (insinuating it's time to leave). Considering they close at 11, we had already closed our tab around 10:45 and were finishing our final beers. At 11:00 on the dot, we were asked to re-look at our clocks in regards to what time it was. We were extremely caught off guard because the bar was still packed with about 5-7 people. We questioned why the others at the bar were not asked to leave and Dan's reply was "those two guys are from out of town, the other 2 guys work here, and that girl is my girlfriend". We weren't even allowed to finish our drinks. I've worked many years in the restaurant/bar industry and this is the worst service you can give a customer. Considering this was after spending $100 for drinks and sub par appetizers on a casual night out, we will not be returning. We are new to the macklind neighborhood and hoped to find a long lasting neighborhood bar, we will not be back and will continue to share our experience. read more

The Mack is a small family friendly, neighborhood bar and grill located on Macklind Ave in South City's South Hampton neighborhood. By the looks on the outside you wouldn't really expect much, there are a few seats which provide limited outside seating but when you walk in you discover a good size bar with three unique sections. You first notice the bar section, however there are two more slightly separated spaces with more casual seating perfect for a drink with a friend, or even a quick meal with the family. The atmosphere here is low key, there are more than enough TVs so you don't need to worry about missing a second of the Cardinals game either! There are also dart boards and even a basketball game which can allow you to challenge your friend to see who is a better shot! The staff here is friendly, and the beers are cold. Be sure to check their menu for the weekly specials, to save a few dollars. For example on Friday, you can get $1.50 domestics and a 8oz burger with fries for 1/2 Price, or on Saturday you can get a half priced pizza! Specials are dine in only, so no carry out at discounted prices! The food here is equally as impressive, I have to admit that The Mack possibly serves one of the best burgers in Saint Louis and best of all, it's cheap starting at only $6.50 with the most expensive burger being $8.00 with fries! I ordered the Bacon Cheeseburger which is an 8oz burger topped with cheddar cheese and smoked bacon. The burger itself was seasoned perfectly, and cooked to perfection the bacon was crisp and delicious. The fries were perfectly crisp and seasoned and paired well with the burger, my meal was so good I came back the following Sunday to take advantage of the Sunday pizza special! The pizza is good, and served thin crust just like Imo's however I actually preferred the crust at The Mack over Imo's. The toppings are good, and appeared to be quality ingredients in fact the pepperoni had a unique spicy flavor without being too strong. I also tried some of their Toasted Ravioli, which were equally as tasty. Overall The Mack offers great food, cold beer, family friendly service at a reasonable price (especially their daily specials). I really wish Yelp had I 1/2 star ratings, because I feel that The Mack deserves a solid 4.5 review, anyways I highly recommend adding The Mack to your list of places to visit! read more

The Mack is one of my favorite places. I went once, Katie was our waitress, she helped me pick out a drink that is now my go-to (Deep Eddy Lemon with water), I ordered the oven baked pretzels with cinnamon butter (so delicious), and the standard burger with cheese. My girlfriend ordered a bud light and the south side bbq burger. It was so good we went back a week or two later. Katie was our waitress again and remembered our whole order as well as our names! We went back every few weeks and every time Katie greeted us by name and remembered our order. Such a friendly atmosphere with great food. It's not you Mack, it's me. I dragged the beautiful wife here last weekend for lunch because she was in a burger mood. I had remembered reading that the Mack has positive reviews for their burgers and they had a steak sandwich that I was destined to try. I'll start off the with positives: 1) Really, really, really friendly bartender/server. I felt bad that he had to walk all the way around the bar each time to help us, but he always had a smile on his face and seemed to actually care if we were happy or not. 2) The wings are pretty good -- they serve them on a plate in the sauce, so if you like your wings extra saucy, this is the place. 3) They had two of the bar televisions showing soccer. 4) The steak in my steak sandwich was perfectly cooked (medium rare) 5) The accompanying fries were hot and crisp. Nicely salted as well. Now the ehhhs: 1) I didn't see any beer taps, just bottles. Basically all macros (including the Irish and Mexican macros). Do they have taps? Am I going to kick myself later for simply not asking? 2) The garlic bread of my steak sandwich was completely mushy. I was hoping for something a bit more crispy, not droopy. Not that I ate much of it (see below) And finally, the dealbreakers: 1) This is a Den of Provel. Yes, other cheeses are available on certain dishes, but for things like pizzas, you're likely screwed. 2) I was so intent on getting the steak sandwich that I didn't notice the part on the menu where it was "served on cheese garlic bread." Erin thought I was having a stroke or something, because she automatically knew what "cheese" meant. And much to my horror, when my sandwich arrived, the bread was indeed covered with a coagulated Plasticine mess of Provel. Fortunately, the steak wasn't contaminated, so it was eaten by itself. But consider yourself warned -- a nameless cheese is never a good cheese! I suspect if I had gotten a burger instead (and controlled my cheese destiny), I'd be writing a 4 star review. But alas, I did not. I can see why some people love this place, but between the distance from home base, the Proveliness of the food, and the uninspired bottled beer, it's likely not a place we'll ever return to. read more

This was not my first time here... I haven't been here in 6 months, though. This was the first time I brought my boyfriend here, after bragging about the food for months. Well I'm glad we finally came, because now there's nothing left to talk about. Our service by Meagan was terrible and rushed. I ordered a club soda and trashed wings (keto friendly) and my boyfriend ordered a draft beer and the Hangover burger. My wings came and were such a disappointment. They were not trashed - they must've fired them without sauce. Such a disappointment. I mentioned this to the server and she literally told me I was wrong and that's how they were supposed to be, but I've had them here before so I knew that wasn't true! Not impressed with her response. Honestly, the highlight of the meal was the Caesar dressing on the salad my boyfriend and I split. I've been to the Mack plenty of times, and while I think my days of hanging out here in the evenings with the 27 and unders are over, I do like to come in during the day or early evening hours and watch the old ladies or neighborhood regulars hangout, and have beer or two and some food. The steak sandwich is the best in the city that I've had, and the Pizza is one of my favorites in the area. I guess depending on the cook for the evening, if you order the deluxe, you have a good chance of getting a pizza with a perfectly crunchy bacon topping. OMG it's so good. And side note, I was in there last night with the carp to pick up some dinner, and I had a craving for a buffalo chicken sammich but they didn't have one on the menu. Rude service, inaccurate order pickup, will not be going back. We ordered burgers and fries. I ordered side salad. They charged me more for the salad than the menu price. Got home with pickup order.. no salad. Paid for it- it was on receipt. Wife also ordered pretzels, and it didn't make it onto the order... fortunately we weren't charged Iike I was for salad. If you're not familiar with the concept of the term "Bro" then let me explain: They infest The Mack, which I thought was just a really cool neighborhood sports bar. You know, a place where it's ok to chow down on fried food wonders (toasted ravioli, chicken strips, etc.) and make fun of the Cardinals for not making it to the playoffs. Well, this is that kind of place... To an extent. But the night I visited offered not only that sort of environment, but also offered a haven to Bros: popped collars, vacant conversation revolving around how wasted they got the other night, and a general sense of Bro-itude; I felt like swimming in Bro testosterone where they were all waiting to get into a fight... Or high-five each other all the time, while tacking on "Bro!" to the ends of their statements. I went towards the back to check out their game room. Lo and Behold! A dart room! Immediately, my happiness pointes went up. It seemed like they were hosting dart leagues there. The beer selection is mainstay Anheuser-Busch product, which in my opinion, adds to the Bro-ness of the place. But the service is pretty swift and on their game, since I basically mumbled my order. They're good, South St. Louis folks there, it's just not my crowd. However, I'll consider going here with, say, my old college roommates, or a bachelor party prior to visiting the "Sauget Ballet." read more

Our first visit to The Mack was this 4th of July after the Macklind Mile. We hung out here after our run for a couple bloody marys and a few beers. It was different than what I expected but definitely worked for me. The bloody marys were good and the beers are cheap. We decided to try it out again last night for dinner, beers, and the Cards game since on our last visit we realized it had a good TV setup for watching a game. There was a good crowd in the bar area with 1 open table, which we picked as it was perfect for viewing the game. We were greeted right away and ordered a $10 bucket of Natty Light bottles (6 in a bucket). We started off with an order of the spinach artichoke toasted rav (1/2 price and very good, never had this before) and I ordered the steak sandwich for my entree and my girlfriend got a burger. Both were great and I was pleasantly surprised by how tender and juicy the steak was in the sandwich. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is b/c of the lack of beer selection. I'm fine w/ the beers they have but if I'm feeling like some different beers, I'll have to go somewhere else. I will go and get a $10 bucket of Natty and watch a game though. The service was friendly and on top of everything and the food and drinks are cheap. It's a place where regulars hang out but we felt right at home. We will definitely be back. Had friends tell us, "You need to try The Mack!" So off we went. They mentioned they had good hamburgers. That was all I needed to hear. . . where are my car keys! We went to The Mack at 4615 Macklind Avenue to try it out. Wanted to go on 1/2 price hamburger night (Monday all day long) and we were not disappointed. They were right - kinda local bar gathering place, but the 8 ounce hamburger was grilled to perfection for my taste and I added their onion rings as a side option. The burger was only $3.75 and taste was amazing. I am a bit bias to The Mack because it is the first place I went when I began my love affair with South City. The Mack is one of my all-time favorite places, mainly because it is like a sports bar/dance club/townie bar all rolled into one. The mixed drinks are all served in pint glasses, which is dangerously fun. My favorite drink there is the "Ninja Water," which consists of water, berry vodka, and a splash of cranberry juice. Why do they call it the Ninja Water? Because these sneak up on you like a ninja. Pace yourself, I have fallen victim to the ninja water a few times. If you like bar food, then the Mack is a good choice. If you are feeling like splurging, opt for the fried pickles, which are fried to perfection and served alongside a creamy ranch. The Mack also has an incredible buffalo chicken sandwich which is fried and served on a hoagie with pepperjack cheese and ranch. Dang. The girls that work at The Mack are so friendly and they create awesome drinks. I love to run up to the bar and say ,"surprise me!" and they always do. Check out their shot menu above the bar for a list of nearly 100 different shots that they know by heart! This place is ideal for bachelorette parties that want to hang out without getting harassed. This was one of our stops along the way for a birthday party Saturday night (see my review of the Stl Road Pony for more details). We arrived around 8:30 pm, all dressed in 80's garb. The "regulars" definitely gave us some strange looks and even made some loud comments as we walked past. Who cares? We looked GOOD! OK, good maybe wasn't the right word. Authentic might be better :) Regardless, there was power in numbers and we were ready to have a good time. Bellied up to the bar and were served right away. Before the DJ came on at 9:30, we were able to find plenty of 80's rock on the jukebox to dance around to. And the guys who didn't want to dance played air hockey. Nice! By 10:15, we were mingling with the regulars and they bought us a round of shots. Maybe by that time, they had gotten used to our strange getups. Or they had just enough to drink that everything was starting to make more sense. One guy tried to tell me that my bedazzled denim dress wasn't quite 80's enough for him...shows what he knows. Got my tab before hopping back on the Road Pony - it was less than $20. That includes buying the b-day girl a beer, the bf a few drinks and a few beers for myself. That's a deal! Wow! To think I actually once had a "ROTD" for this place. Based on our recent Saturday lunch visit, I can only surmise that in the 4 years since I last "Mack'd" that it has undergone a change in ownership/management or both. Arriving during the lunch hour the place was nearly empty inside but when we sat ourselves the bartender brought us menus so we knew there was a kitchen staff present. The massive "Man Burger" I'd knew and loved was off the menu, but the famous Steak Sandwich, which had prompted our visit that day anyway, was still there so we both ordered it. Mine med-rare, mama's med. What we expected and had enjoyed in the past and what we received 10 minutes later was a humongous let down. Each paltry $9.75 sandwich and side of fries was essentially an 8-inch long hot dog bun cut in half with a little melted cheese and garlic and 4 little medallions of steak, 2 on each half (formerly 5 healthy chunks of delicious steak at $9). The skinny fries looked like an afterthought. The temp on both our sandwiches was mid-well to well at best. Barely a hint of pink in my med-rare and the medium was full well. In the past, the ample sandwich would have easily filled me up or left me wanting more. This time, it was gone and I was eager to get the hell out of the place so I could find a drive-up window to fill up the tank. Gone are the meaty ample well-seasoned steak chunks that were so tender you didn't end up trying to swallow the chunk in one bite. Totally absent is the former double cheesey garlic bread baguette that used to serve as the top and bottom roll. These sandwiches were not even a meager shadow of the past glory of their former selves. Paltry, uninspired, sad. Sad is how I felt that a once great sandwich place that I nearly recently recommended people go and try for their award-worthy steak sandwich, is gone. Other than the massive "Shot menu board" that hangs above the bar which is good for a chuckle, I can't imagine anything redeeming about the place after this visit, especially if the descent of the steak sandwich is indicative of the other food. Unfortunately, based on the demise of the once great steak sandwich and the absence of the One Pound "Man Burger" that used to grace the burger menu, there's no reason for me to return or recommend The Mack to curious future diners. OK so I'm going to be in the minority here. We wanted something different, close to home and decided to try The Mack. The steak on garlic bread sounded really good so we both ordered that. OMG this place is sooooo damn slow. It was becoming an uncomfortably longwait. I did notice on the menu it said they had a small kitchen and to just be patient. Believe what they say, you will wait a very long time for a very mediocre steak sandwich. I would guess we waited close to, if not an hour. The waitress was sweet and did keep filling up our glass' but Jesus Christ! Just not worth the wait. The steak sandwich was OK. The meat was tough and had to be cut into smaller bites which was really too bad because the garlic bread and cheese was very good.The skinny fries were awesome. If you have a lot of time to just hang out I guess you could wait an hour for a sandwich, but nothing impressed me enough that I would ever come back. The Mack was introduced to us by a regular. It was pretty delicious. I got a four cheeseburger and a salad with there house pepper vinaigrette. The burger was well cooked and really good. The salad was pretty plain and the dressing could have had more flavor. My husband got the steak sandwich, he said it was good. They have waffle fries, so that made him happy. The kiddos got grilled cheese with fries and green beans. The green beans were delicious - made with bacon. They have some local beers on tap and the prices were pretty decent. The Yelp review says not good for kids, but I disagree. They have a basketball game and our kids were able to be loud without interruption to other diners. I remember this as a super smokey dive. But alas, they've cleaned this place up. It has an open feel. It's still divey... but not dirty. My friends wanted to watch a World Cup game here. They have plenty of TV's, although you're better off at some tables than others if you want a good view. Drink specials are posted behind the bar. For eats I tried their sliders, O rings, and slaw. We've passed by The Mack a few times and after reading the Yelp reviews I made a mental note to check it out. We finally went on a Thursday night for dinner and a couple drinks. As we sat up to the bar we noticed that it was definitely a 20-30's hangout with a lot of regulars, like Kelly B. mentioned. Okay atmosphere, nothing too spectacular, but they do have a separate game room that's good for large groups. I ordered the burger and Zack got the steak sandwich (what they're known for). Both entrees were delish! The steak sandwich was cooked perfectly medium, juicy, and massive. The burger was tender and flavorful. We were both satisfied. (BTW, They use the same seasoning on their fries as Tin Can) I really wish they had a pool table - they have the room! I don't just like this place because I share the Mack name. I like it because it is just plain good. Great neighborhood bar atmosphere where people are friendly and it seems like everyone knows each other. Beer selection could be better but their menu is stellar. The Mack does bar food right! Two highlights of the menu are the Cheesesteak sandwich and the Killer Steak sandwich. Both are phenomenal. The burgers here are also a go-to on the menu. The first time I went here, the food was great. I had the roast beef sandwich and it was delicious and cheesy. I came here again and got the "killer steak sandwich", which was just chunks of steak on bread. Really boring. It didn't taste very good. I thought maybe it was just an off day. Then I went yesterday and decided to have the beef sandwich again and it came out cold. Not just room temperature cold, but cold. They took it back and heated up. But the fries were gross because they were cold/reheated. And my boyfriend's burger was not hot and his fries were cold. He didn't say anything about his but even if he did, no one would have cared. I feel like maybe the first time was the anomaly and the other two times were the standard. I have to say, I don't plan on returning any time soon. read more

They failed the ultimate test...carry out. We ordered a grilled chicken sandwich plain with pepper jack and cross-cut fries + a grilled chicken sandwich with everything and regular seasoned fries. Instead, we got a cheeseburger with regular fries and a plain chicken sandwich with regular fries. We called to report the error and the staff was very nice, saying they mixed up our order with another customer's, and that they would remake our order and comp us if we came back up. The point of our carry out was to be lazy though, so we just ate what they gave us. The burger was ok; just your average cheeseburger we thought. The grilled chicken sandwich was about the same, but the meat to bread ratio was too bread-y. The fries were pretty bad. We were only a 5-minute drive away, but they were limp and barely warm as soon as we opened the boxes. We'll probably give them one more shot, but aren't in a hurry to do so. We went here after a show for a drink and The Mack was right down the street so we decided to try it. Walking in, there was a huge crowd at the bar so we grabbed some tables in the dining area. There was one waitress working our area and after waiting awhile some of our table went up to the bar to get drinks. When we finally flagged her down, she said we had to go to the bar to order. Now that was fine but it was confusing because she served all the tables around us. The Mack does have an extensive shot menu, good bar selection, the food looked good though I did not order any, and it is affordable. I just thought the service was a little underwhelming but it could have been a off night. It is not that I would not go back but also there was nothing that could entice me to go back. I guess I should give a Pro and Con list: Pros: TVs, Extensive shot/bar list, open late with late night food Cons: Service, very loud, service, and very small womens restroom. read more

Remember that one time the power randomly went out as your waitress was walking away with your credit card, and 45 minutes later the POS had not rebooted? And then she said that it was impossible to write down the card info because the POS had no way to enter card numbers? Also, said waitress didn't write things down. Surprisingly... more than 5 things were messed up between 4 people. Considering it took 15 minutes to get her to notice that we wanted to get our check, we could have left before the power went out and screwed up the computer. When I finally went to have an employee find a manager, he said that they thought "it was close to being fixed." Aside from the waitress the saying sorry a few times, there was nothing that made me feel okay about being there for more than 2.5 hours when it took us an hour for dinner. This review may be a little skewed just because I never had any food, but rather, just traveled here with my husband for an evening drink. We don't usually venture out of our quiet, comfy, Southampton house after 9pm on any given evening anymore, especially just for a drink, but the Mack is within walking distance of our home. After living in the area for almost 6 months, we thought it was time to at least try some of the bar establishments located near us. He had a new castle because the beer he wanted wasn't on tap. I don't actually remember what it was, but he didn't seem too dissapointed. I had my current favorite, Red Bull and vodka. Mine was large and tasty and neither seemed too pricey. The bar atmosphere is just that, a bar. There's a juke box, some cocktail tables with chairs, a divider between rooms, etc... Though, one of the rooms contained darts which I'm sure we'll be back with our friends for. I've heard the food is pretty good if you're looking for pizza, burgers, fries...etc, which I'm totally up for more often than not. As I mentioned earlier, it is walking distance from my house, which makes it a pretty great local hang-out spot, though I wasn't totally impressed. I'm sure I'll be back another night when my husband and I are entertaining some buddies. read more
