Had a great time here the other night for trivia while visiting friends in town. It's a classic neighborhood bar in Saint Louis. Such a gem! The ONLY reason I couldn't give 5 stars is only because of how loud it is inside. Some sort of minor sound insulation would do wonders. Our server Shelly was training a new team member, and both of them were great, friendly, attentive, and incredibly thoughtful. We got some toasted ravs for an appetizer. They were so tasty and just perfect nostalgia. I had a burger--it was juicy. Fries are just ok. The pot roast is also really good but a little too salty. Definitely try it if you're in the neighborhood!

I had been here a couple times before, but just for drinking. Love watching the games here. But this rating is purely for the food. The menu is definitely bar food, which is fine. We were here on a friend's "best burger quest". Happy to say that while I didn't get one, the person on that personal quest loved their burger. He wasn't overly thrilled with the fries. Gotta say I agree. They weren't really hot and they had seasoning on them. I think that if you are getting fries that have seasoning on them, then the menu should say that... normally I ask but I went for a salad so I didn't think to do so. My Philly was sliced meat on a tasty bun with cheese whiz. There weren't any onions (or so it seemed), and while I'm a fan of cheese whiz, there was WAY too much on the sandwich. The meat was good... what I could taste of it. The salad was tasty and fresh and I liked the ranch dressing. One of my other pals got the house dressing and it was too sweet for them. (Although I didn't mind it. ) I am also not a fan of using baking sheets as plates. I think it's a cute concept unless they are warped and move as you try eating from them. I feel like I'm being harsh but honestly... love the place for drinking and watching sports. And the potato skins? They were fabulous!! Crunchy on the outside not mushy on the inside but perfect. I'll definitely be back to cheer on my favorite sports team.

Honestly I only came here for the Tuesday night trivia but the food was GOOD. Highly highly recommend the chicken and waffles sandwich. The waffles taste like a Belgian waffle where each bite has crusted sugar on it--I would come back just for this! Our server was great and trivia was 10/10.

Nothing better than escaping the hot sun with a visit to the local tavern for a quick bite to eat. At the heart of Macklind District, THE MACK, delivers on a high scale. Glittered with history; Featured in a corner is what appears to be an antique PHONE BOOTH, but don't quote me on that (before my time). Inside feels low-key and welcoming. The main bar leads into a larger dining expansion. Unsure of what to order, went with a simple Burger & Fries. Quicktip: Don't try and request medium rare, toppings, etc. - they're all served in uniform fashion. Burger went splendid and the HIDDEN DOUBLE PATTY was a pleasant surprise. Fries seasoned thorough, but nothing really came through. IPA beverages & shot selections readily available on those popular chalkboard displays. ***Ideal for friends and family, with various daily specials throughout the week. Bring the kids if you want, as they have assorted games and those dreadful POP-A-SHOT machines. No complaints***

Yum. Their menu is limited right now due to Covid but thankfully their burgers are on it! Delicious. Great patio, they have touch tunes, and great food. Just a neighborhood, no frills bar. It's on point.

I went in thinking British craziness and got a "Edgar Allen Poe" feel... But I'm going to say this was NOT what I was expecting. First and foremost, your eyes are going to need adjusting. Plain and simple, it felt more like a dark ... room? (Part of the problem I think is that as it was already June, you can forget using the fireplace to lighten the room up) so it felt.. "Small", and I"m going to feel weird saying this... "Romantic Horrorfest". Wait, before you go "wha??", this isnt' necessarily a bad thing. The Taxidermy , the photos on the wall. the fireplace. the VERY (and I mean VERY) dim lighting... The limited seating on the main floor, the one door in and out it had a "wooden cabin feel".. Yes, if you had a wonderful romantic film and it was suddenly invaded by some monster villain... This where it would take place and it would be perfect. (See I can find positive things to say about things i wasn't looking for) As for the service, apparently (going back to the Romantic filmfest), I was struggling to get any attention for the bartendress, cause I guess I was solo'ing by myself, and because of how I wasn't able to get the bartendress attention... I kinda felt like an unwanted customer in a place more for couples or friends getting together which had me leaving shortly thereafter, so no real food score (although I will say, much like Oh London ,the menu wasn't really much to work through...), Anyway, no TV's, no world cup game on the air.. just like I said a vibe of a cabin in a "romantic movie, where the monsters lurk". And Apologies for some of the iffy pictures, it just didn't feel right using a flash on the camera in such a secluded locale) and like I said, it wasnt' what I was expecting (rowdy British fans watching the local club or something), but there's something about it that even i have to admit, would make this location a nice "date night" or "out with friends' location, more so than just a single person looking for a nightcap. (And Maybe there really is a monster hiding in the fireplace, to keep the "Horror" feel going?? :)

I was honestly surprised at how busy it was when we arrived at 4pm on a Thursday. I wasn't expecting that kind of crowd, but thankfully I had made a reservation, so we were able to get seated right away. As much as I would've loved to sit on the patio, it didn't look like anything was available, although if you can snag a patio table, I'd definitely recommend it. Inside was packed, with quite a few larger groups as well. Our table was right in the middle of the restaurant, so we had a good view of everything going on. It was loud, but in a fun, lively way. Our server was really friendly and quick. She checked in on us often and gave some helpful recommendations. We ordered drinks and a couple of apps to share, and she left us a full bottle of cold water, which was such a nice touch. We got the pretzel monkey bread, french fries (the best) and the artichoke bean dip. We weren't planning to stay for dinner, just wanted some snacks. The food came out fast and honestly looked too good to wait on. I loved the monkey bread, the pretzel bites had a great crisp to them, and the sauces they served with it were really good. The bean dip was good too, just not as much my thing since I'm not a big fan of dill, so I left most of that for everyone else. Once we wrapped up, we were able to split the check and head out pretty quickly. I really appreciate places that still make it easy to split checks, and even more when you can just pay right at the table with those handheld POS devices.

You could see this place being lit on St. Patrick's Day…read more It's a deceptively large space, perhaps owing to it being situated on a street that's more along the lines of an alley, along with a few government and industrial buildings. It already smells vaguely of mop water, so it wouldn't be an issue if someone barfed. This place pours a good Guinness draft. Not that I'm an expert. The last few times I had it, it was in the weird cans with the dispenser thing inside of them, years ago. Probably decades ago. But I appreciate the fact that it's served kinda warm, and without too much of a head, meaning you get more beer for your $10, or whatever they're charging you. The food isn't half-bad either. All the photos on Yelp make it look gross, like maybe they were taken in low light, or a long time ago. Possibly both. It was all lit up when I was there, at maybe 8 PM on a Wednesday evening. Does this place turn into some sort of nightlife destination for local boomers? I might drive by this evening and see if I see a bunch of golf carts parked out front. You can't go wrong with a burger in a place like this, so that was the plan. They offer something called the Pub Burger, which comes on an English muffin. It's hard to imagine how that could be a good idea, but I briefly considered it anyway, for the sake of citizen food journalism. The problem is, I would have had to eat it. There was also something called the Llywelyn, served on toasted brioche, which is what I probably should have gotten. I got something called the Diner, which was fine. As its name suggests, it's a bog standard double cheeseburger, like something you might get in, erm, a diner. It was good but not great, but I've been spoiled when it comes to burgers lately, having hit Hi Pointe, Shake Shack and Salt & Smoke all within the past few weeks. The ingredients were really good, including the vegetable toppings, which were fresh and expertly sliced. I especially liked the razor-thin onion slices. The thing that would have really elevated it is if the burger patties had a little char to them. The fish and chips looked good, and I appreciate the fact that they already had malt vinegar out on the table, as if it's a standard condiment. I might have to try that, if I return. I don't know how often I'd eat here otherwise, but a group I belong to meets here on occasion, so that's not outside the realm of possibility.

However, more soccer fans were on the patio, smoking and wishing the US game to be put on. As soon as they accommodated this request, it got louder. Our waitress was lovely but also couldn't hear us outside at times. I ordered steak and brie sliders (appetizers) while he ordered the famous steak sandwich. The sliders came in a trio, and I ordered a side of sweet potato fries. The portion of fries was massive, and each slider is cooked to your liking and came with 3-4 chunks per slider. I did wish it had more brie and caramelized onions, but it was still good. If they ever want to elevate the recipe or make an offering, garlic butter buns would set this off even more! He enjoyed his steak and cheese sandwich, and we tried their seasonal blackberry margarita with our meal. I hadn't been here in a while but will avoid it during peak game times of the year. I personally can't handle a lot of noise while dining!

Not only were we not granted an exception on the checks as consolation for not being able to order french fries, there was no indication that this had even occurred to our server. This is precisely the level of temerity we need to inculcate in young women in our society, and I'd encourage her to apply for a job at the women's-only sports bar a few doors down if and when it ever opens. It'd be tragic if she wasn't there if and when I return, but I'd appreciate the fact that she has a greater mission. Hopefully, the deep fryer is working. It being out of commission naturally limited the number of things on the menu we could order. We were only told that we couldn't order anything that required a deep fryer, not given a modified menu or anything. I started going through each item and imagining how it might be prepared, but I couldn't muster the psychological bandwidth to continue. Hit my Cash App if you appreciate the amount of unpaid emotional labor I was compelled to contribute. It occurred to me that I might just get a burger and a side salad, but then I saw that they carry a club sandwich. I love a good club sandwich, and I figured it might make for a light, refreshing alternative, given the weather. There's an option to get a cup of soup for $1.50 extra as a side with your sandwich (no, they didn't offer to eat the charge), and I figured that might go well with my sandwich. I was kicking myself when they brought out someone else's order with the side salad. It looked really good. The Frisco Burger, or whatever they're calling it, looked good too. Meanwhile, the BBQ Beef & Cheddar Soup--the soup du jour (that's French), according to Flo--looked gross, like something your dog might cough up. But damn it was good! It was more beef than anything else. A large bowl of it might actually be too much food. (I'd still eat it, natch.) The overall flavor profile was along the lines of a good french onion soup. It was a reminder that I need to be ordering soup in restaurants more often. I wish the club sandwich was cut into little triangles and fanned out on the plate in some elaborate configuration, like at a place where rich old ladies have lunch, but I guess that wouldn't have been in keeping with the theme. Instead, it was served on the world's thickest Texas toast, with the world's dullest steak knife protruding from its center. This sounds like hyperbole, but I may have honestly been served the equivalent of half a loaf of bread. It was much more bread than I required, but at least it was fresh and delicious, as were all the other ingredients. Turkey used for sandwiches is almost never remarkable, but this was surprisingly great, as good as anything you'd get served as an entree unto itself. Nothing about this place suggests that it would have such good food, but it just goes to show you can't judge a book by its cover. The decor, the overall vibe and the lack of hospitality might not be for everyone, but don't let that deter you.

There was a 20-30 minute wait so we found seats at the bar and ordered cocktails. Very good. Very strong. The Block is a great space. Tall ceilings, warm & inviting, perhaps a little low lighting for us challenged folks, but nice, easy to read menus made up for it. A busser brought us water and shortly behind him was Laura-Beth, (our server) with a big smile and menus. After explaining the menu, specials, and taking our drink orders she left us to think about our choices. The menu is a little limited but includes sandwiches as well as entrees including fish option.. Being a "butcher" restaurant we both opted for the ribeye, medium rare. The steak comes only with fries which I ordered while my date went for whipped potatoes. I also went for a side of spinach. We also split a Block Salad as a starter. Choosing to split the Block Salad was a good idea. It was more than enough for two. It was great version of a chopped salad with fresh greens, bacon, smoked ham, egg, house-smoked cheddar, tomatoes, red onion, dressed with just enough buttermilk dressing. Really enjoyed it and just the right amount of salad. Only criticism is not salt and pepper on the table. Probably by design but disappointing. Next came our steaks and sides. We both ordered medium-rare. Her steak was a little under but close enough. My steak was raw in the center. I should have said something but there wasn't so much it was inedible for me. Better under than over! The seasoned fries were good and the whipped potatoes very good were delicious. The fresh spinach was cooked perfect, but under seasoned. All in all, good sides. We finished with Irish Coffee and vanilla ice cream. Kudos to the staff A special thank you to our server Laura-Beth. You were spot on friendly, courteous, attentive, and made our evening great and not just good. Overall, a good place, A bit expensive but where isn't these days. Well worth a try if you haven't.
