Getting all six of us together can be quite the challenge though at times selecting the location puts the stress for many reasons but luckily Paul C has been here and was recommended so here we are. Funny enough I've passed here countless times and had forgotten it's even located on the ground floor of Imperial Plaza which does have parking making it easy for us to gather. What was easier is that he knew the recommended items to order... - Pan fried dumplings...such a sucker for dumplins - Fried Oysters (I'm sorry I chickened out on them) - Steamed dumplings...so good I took three pics of them lol! - Jajangmyeon...noodle nut lover but was okay for me - Shrimp that looked spicy (allergic) that everyone loved ;) - Beef Bittermelon...not bad for a person that don't eat bitter melon - Salt & Pepper Chicken wings...winner winner it was SO yummy! - Sweet & Sour Fish All very different in it's own way but was very good the only down side for me personally is they don't have their own bathroom and you need to walk quite the distance right off the parking garage provided by the building which was a big thing for me personally but the staff is very nice and I enjoyed myself as sharing with friends made it much more fun. Our group of six enjoyed a delicious dinner with a little of something for everyone. Fried chicken wings were my favorite. Crisp thin coating on the outside, nicely seasoned with tender juicy chicken meat, and not all bones. The fried oysters were also pretty good. Most everyone enjoyed the spicy fried shrimp. Again, coated and seasoned, the shrimp had a nice kick of chili. Having the combination of steamed and fried potstickers was also a great idea to share. The beef with bittermelon was great. Perfectly cooked, the beef was tender and the bittermelon wasn't soggy. This dish had wonderful flavor, in my humble opinion. The sweet sour fried fish was yummy too. Excellent texture, this fish wasn't over nor undercooked :) And dinner is not complete without noodles. We enjoyed the jajangmyeon, which they also served with pickled veggie side dish. Our server Elise was fantastic! From beginning to end of our meal, she took really good care of us. Attentive and polite, she was quick to refill water and hot tea without us having to ask. Love, love, loved my experience dining here with friends. Very reasonable prices, lots of parking available, tables and chairs were clean, food was delicious, and service was fantastic! Revenge eating in Honolulu, Hawaii... I saw Paul C.'s check-in at this restaurant and decided to dine here when our group needed a place to meet. The Mandarin Restaurant has been around for a long time, but I had never been. Paul's review and photos motivated me to gather some friends so that we could try a larger variety of dishes. Coincidentally, Paul was able to join us and took the lead in ordering: 1. Steamed dumplings - homemade wrappers 2. Pan-fried dumplings - delicious 3. Fried oysters - fresh inside and crisp outside 4. Jajangmyeon (black bean noodles) - comfort food 5. Salt and pepper chicken wings - enjoyed the pop of salt! 6. Bittermelon beef - firm veggies were not mushy! 7. Sweet sour fish - moist and tender Elisa was our attentive, efficient, polite server. She thought ahead and brought us water refills, takeout boxes, and more tea! In the end, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise that Paul used his family as guinea pigs and weeded out the good menu items for us! Dinner with friends for me, is always a win. But sometimes, when the restaurant is amazing as well, it's a double win! We met up at this place because a friend recommended it...and we wanted to try. Boy, was it good! I happened to be a little early, and the nice lady who works there (Elisa/Lisa) was very nice. Even though I was there alone waiting, she brought me ice water and hot tea...so sweet. She was attentive the whole dinner...it's so refreshing to have great service with your meal. Full disclosure, the items we ate don't automatically scream authentic Chinese cuisine, but all the food was delicious. We had... Fried dumplings Boiled dumplings Fried oysters Jiajiamen (black bean over dry noodles) Spicy crispy shrimp Bittermelon w beef Fried chicken wings Sweet and sour fish The dumplings were very good. Crispy, boiled, doesnt matter...I would get them again. Plump and juicy...these dumplings went down very easy with vinegar and soy sauce. I'm kinda particular about oysters and these were perfect for me. Great oyster taste, but very crispy and hot. They came with their own dipping sauce....yummo! The spicy crispy shrimp was my favorite. A little sweet, a little heat, and a lot of crispy. Oh man what a combination! It was a 3 out of 10 (and I'm a wimp) on my spicy scale, so there was just enough heat to enhance the flavor. The big surprise was the fried chicken wings. Unbelievably crispy and seasoned to perfection. It was hard to eat just one. I don't normally eat chicken wings...and I really don't eat them at Chinese restaurants...but these are a must try. ***4.5 STARS*** When peeps in my office also found out I'm a foodie, they often share with me their findings. However, they do not document their experiences, so I have to remember or take notes of what's good and at where. One of them was The Mandarin, a northern Chinese cuisine restaurant at Imperial Plaza. I've passed by this restaurant many, many times as I get my haircut from the salon just next door. My hair stylist has mentioned about this place to me but never made the effort to give them a try. Re-opened in 2007, The Mandarin is a husband-and-wife team from Taiwan who serves delicious northern Chinese style cuisine and boasts non-usage of monosodium glutamate (MSG). To be on the safe side, I wasn't too sure how large is the restaurant and how busy they may be, I called ahead and made reservations for a table of 5. We arrived at 630pm to an empty restaurant. The interior was tasteful with Chinese décor and ornaments here and there, but it was a little gloomy. We studied the reviews and glanced at the limited photo gallery on Yelp, where it was challenging on what to order. I had jotted down dishes of interest where the list grew to a whopping ten items. The wife was very friendly and quite efficient in taking our order. I read my list one by one and she repeated our order perfectly. Seems like the back of the house is run by her husband and our food came out one by one. Photos were snapped and it was time to dig in. THE VERDICT: We found the food delicious. Made to order, our dishes were brought out temperature hot. Some dishes were just okay for us but family favorite was the spicy garlic shrimp. Amazing flavor and texture contrast in this dish. Loved the crispy exterior and the bits of garlic and peppers. It was so good that I ordered another one. Chicken wings were also spot on. Executed beautifully. Crispy, juicy and seasoned well. The Zhajiangmian was also notable. The staff advised us the noodles and dumpling wrappers are all house made. Great texture and bounce, the bean sauce was robust and clung to the noodles and enjoyed the crunch of the vegetables. The noodles in the Jjamppong were also good texture. Accompanying broth was just okay. We loved the boiled dumplings and liked it better than the fried potstickers. To be frank, we weren't impressed with the eggplant with tofu, sweet and sour pork and jellyfish. They looked promising on the plate but no wow factor when we sampled them. Service was above average, perhaps we were the only patrons while dining there. There was a phone call for a carryout order and a family of 3 arrived early and sat on the other round table with a reserved sign sitting on top as we left at 745pm. Overall, a pleasant first experience at The Mandarin where family is game for another visit. There are other items on the menu that we would like to sample. This little hidden gem is the best! We visited this centrally located spot during our trip to Oahu. It is a mom and pop owned shop with delicious, fresh, and authentic Chinese food. Our favorites were the potstickers were so fresh and crispy (they make them homemade!) and the beef and broccoli. We went for dinner. The service was also super fast - they were super attentive so great to grab a quick bite for lunch or takeout. It is really clean inside and a very welcome environment. Highly recommend!! read more

Came here to try them out as I was craving bitter melon and this place had it on the menu. It's a small restaurant that is run by a husband and wife. The lady was super nice and friendly. We came during lunch on a weekday and it had one other person waiting for take out and no one dining in. We ordered our food quickly and the lady quickly gave the order to her husband in the kitchen and then rang the total up. Food was ready in about 10 min. The pot stickers were delicious - lots of filling and cooked well. The soup that came with the meal tasted like a mix between egg drop soup and hot and sour soup. I personally liked it a lot. I got the bitter melon with pork. I liked it, but wish there was a little more black bean in the sauce. Overall, it was nicely done and was flavorful with bitter melon that wasn't that bitter. I also got the jajiangmien (black bean noodles). The noodles were perfect and the sauce on top was tasty. Since this place is within walking distance from my place, I figured to give this place a shot and I am so glad that I decided to venture here! There is street parking available and if the street is full, there should be parking located in the building. This place isn't your typical Chinese restaurant where you and your party is served family style. Instead, this restaurant focuses on individual servings. The menu is located on the table and each entree listed comes with rice and house soup (egg drop soup). It's not all individual serving; you can order appetizers for your whole party to share. Each item is made to order and the husband usually cooks it for you while the wife is providing excellent service. The meals served here are decently priced and it fills your tummy up. The lemon chicken was 3 stars, the egg drop soup on a cold and rainy day was very nice and I'd give it 4 stars, and the quick takeout preparation and value being it to 4 stars overall. The chicken was fine but not very flavorful, decent quality chicken. The portions weren't huge but that was fine, it was a bit more than a single serving of chicken, and a small side soup--it's basically one meal, and it costs about what one meal should. It feels expensive, but compared to everything else on Oahu it's a normal meal, and compared to other Chinese takeout it's nice to have the option to not get a ton of food. I tried to order hot and sour soup without pork and they couldn't do that, so that was one downside. read more

Tried their homemade noodle with chicken some veg and a gravy. Was better than expected. There were only two others in here for lunch, a pair of Japanese ladies catching up. Service was fine and quick. Food comes out quick. Today am trying the sweet sour pork. To me it was fine. Tender, only slightly sweet sour with a sprinkle of what I call namasu on top w rice. The sauce set up nicely after a minute since it was served fresh and hot. The crispness of the coating was nice. It also came with a soup the was like egg drop with mushrooms and tofu. Again just fine. There were about 8 people in and out today, seems to me like a routine hang out since folks chat and laugh. Is this the best Chinese joint on island? not your typical chinese restaurant. we went here for lunch, and when looking at the menu everything was individual plates (main and starch). not family style like i was expecting. i got the steamed fish (one of my faves at chinese restaurants), my coworker got the orange chicken with chow funn. my entree was pretty standard. half of a fish (not a whole fish) served with a bowl of rice. it also came with a cup of egg drop soup. both were served super hot, so do not dig in right away unless you can handle the heat! (temperature) my coworkers entree however was so strange. it was literally chow funn WITH orange chicken. everything was mixed together in the same orange chicken sauce. it wasnt orange chicken with a side of chow funn like we expected. that being said, it was also just chow funn noodles. no veggies, no others meats mixed in, just plain white noodles. needless to say it was not as appetizing since the whole thing was sauced up, and the sauce itself was super garlicy. he only ate maybe half. good place to go if you want chinese food and youre dining by yourself, because the plates are smaller and all come with a starch. not so good if youre expecting family style shareable chinese entrees. i also did not see any chinese chicken salad on the menu, which was surprising to me since thats a usual staple. read more

I used to come here a lot before and it was so great! Haven't been here in over 7 yrs and things have significantly changed. The food was so good before, sadly... it is now just "ok", I'm really sad as I used to love this place. Restaurant is overall clean. There was only one lady working on the day I went so service wasn't horrible but it wasn't that great either. The best thing I liked was the potstickers, everything else was just mediocre. Potstickers: not sure why but these average looking things are delicious! Garlic Chicken: it's "ok". Just ok. Went here for the first time today with a co-worker and I will need to give it another try to really give it a fair shake. But for today''s visit ....I will give it two stars, and here's why. My lunch companion said that they have homemade noodles and to her, they were absolutely delicious. So we get there and although the restaurant was over half full when we got there, we were seated quickly and our meal came out fairly quickly as well. Well, it shouldn't have taken any more time than it did since we both ordered Won Ton Mein and a side order of Deep Fried Won Ton with Crab/Cream Cheese. I need to explain that I am Chinese, Hawaii-born, but my Mom was from the motherland, Hong Kong. As such, I grew up with homemade Chinese cuisine and I am accustomed to homemade noodles that she used to get from Chinatown and used to cook at home. So although the noodles are advertised as being homemade, which some other restaurants may not use, it tasted like the type of noodles I ate as a kid. The broth was slightly spicey and seemed to come from some sort of white pepper seasoning. Not too spicey, but did have a slight "heat" if you know what I mean. There was bean sprouts and fungus as well and was a new twist to a familiar dish. The deep fried Won Ton was....different. The won ton pi (wrapper) was not the traditional type of wrapper. Although it was deep fried, it was very smooth.....sort of like a "pastry" wrapper that has been deep fried. I think it would have tasted better if they used a real won ton wrapper. There was also more cream cheese than crab. Kind of weird to find this in a Chinese restaurant, but it was kind of interesting. After reading the other reviews here, I will need to go back and give them another try and try the other dishes. It wasn't a bad experience, but a good start. The Mandarin Restaurant is like finding out the real Mandarin in Iron Man 3. It's a fake! So is this a Northern Chinese Cuisine (aka Korean-style Chinese Cuisine)? Wait, it serves French Fries and Chicken Wings though! It's American now? Hang on, I see Orange Chicken, and Mongolian Beef? So American Chinese? But there's the Ja Jiang Mein. And Mapo Tofu. @_@ Dizzy now. I remember coming here over twenty years ago when my grandparents lived along Queen Street. I remember eating actual Chinese food. I remember my grandparents telling me how they enjoyed this place. What I don't remember is seeing a mishmash of foods on the menu. What I don't remember is the terrible food. We ordered a couple of lunch specials, which comes with the House Soup and Rice (have brown rice too). The first thing that came was the soup, and it was a sad sight. The bowl wasn't even half full, the color looked murky, and looked like a mess. The soup was hot and sour soup. It was too sour with very little hot. The consistency was too thick, and the ingredients inside tasted bad. Little did I know that this soup was going to be the theme to the meal. My grandfather likes his sweet and sour stuff, so we got the Sweet and Sour Pork. It tasted like the soup! It was overly sour! It probably had the same wood ear fungus strips. The pork was way over battered compared to other places that batter pork the same way. The pork was really mushy and bland, which I am sure it just sat in a container for days. You can literally go anywhere else and find a better version of this dish. I had the Spicy Eggplant with Fried Tofu. YES, it did taste like the soup! I was not expecting that sour taste in this dish, but it was there. It was there killing my taste buds. I think it had the same bamboo shoot strips from the soup! Besides the taste, the eggplant was dead. Literally. I mean...they were way, way overcooked. The skin had burnt marks, and the inside was mush and had an awful color. The fried tofu was not exactly fried tofu, but more like firm tofu slices dumped into oil just for it to slightly brown or perhaps it wasn't even fried at all. Even the rice was bad. It tasted and ate like super cheap calrose rice. After the long, long absence, I figured that I'd take my grandfather here after his doctor's appointment for lunch to see what he remembers of this place, and of course, it's not the same. Located in the Imperial Plaza storefront fronting Cooke Street, The Mandarin Restaurant is a quick stop for lunch with equally quick service. I'm trying to be more mindful of my food choices, so ordered black mushrooms with choi sum vegetarian lunch plate with rice. Piping hot and accompanied with chili pepper sauce, this dish was delicious. The choi sum was crunchy and bright green and the brown sauce was light and tasty, not heavy. A mediocre Chinese restaurant. On the plus side it is very affordable for a sit down restaurant, and food was brought out very quickly. I came in for dinner a little after 6pm, and the restaurant only had a family of four eating. I ordered the tofu and broccoli for $9.95. I think I got my meal in less than ten minutes after ordering. The meal came with white rice and soup. The meal wasn't bad at all, just nothing stellar beyond a typical Americanized Chinese restaurant. If you want a decent priced meal that is simple and quick, this is a good place to eat. read more

The food looks and smells amazing. The taste is so/so. When I first tried this restaurant the owner seemed really nice, food always ready when I get there to pick up my phone order. Their sour soup (I think that's the name) that comes with the meal was really good. Key word being 'was'. The service here is terrible! Several months ago my ex and I came here to have lunch. There was another table of 1 here besides the two of us. We sat ourselves as instructed and waited. We waited a good 10 minutes before she came to take our order. Remember there was 1 additional person there who had already begun eating when we walked in. When she finally came to us, she had a smile and was friendly, which did make it better. Food took awhile to come out. She dropped our food off and took off. We wanted to order something extra, but she never came around, not even to refill our water. Here's where it gets good, we are just over the bad service. We walk up, pay the bill and of course we are not leaving a tip, due to the non-service. We walk out and about 30 seconds later, she comes out with the receipt in hand, waving it around yelling "next time you leave tip!". I turned around and was about to march back there, she was very lucky my ex held me back. Very rude and bad service. Dine in..nope. This is our go-to place when we have no other choices available. We can always count on Mandarin to have consistent food and always have tables open. You can usually find street parking right in front in the metered parking (which is free at night). This place serves chinese - korean food. Not really sure how to explain this but, its chinese food Koreans love. Like black noodle(sorry its 2am and cant think of the names and the wifes sleeping) think jang jang mein or something like that. Me personally dont touch the stuff. I eat the deep fried sweet sour pork. Which for dinner rice, and soup is reasonable @ $7.90. Their hot sour soup it the best. We come here once in a while. I have never tasted anything extraordinary that would want to make me come back weekly, but also never tasted anything bad in this place. Everything just seems A-OK. Now that there is no competition with the recent fire at On Dong, The Mandarin has taken top spot for best Jja jjang myun in town. I have been coming here for my korean-chinese food cravings because its one of the few places that serves this style of food. Atmosphere: The restaurant is close to Ah-lang off Kapiolani. It is on the bit run down side with its round glass covered tables and booths but what chinese place isn't. It reminds me of my childhood. Service: Good service. The owner seems to be the hostess and waitress also. You can't get much better than that. Food: solid jja jjang myun but definitely no where near the best. I always get the Gan Jja jjang myun because the regular jja jjang myun doesn't have enough black bean flavor for me. The spicy fried chicken or gam poongi is also good but it boneless, too much batter and not spicy at all. Food is good and not so good depending on what you order. Seafood dishes were good however we ordered a mushroom entree and it tasted and felt like they were just taken from tepid water and thrown on a dish. The young lady is ok but the old lady is rude. Not very Korean nor Chinese. I tried Tangsuyuk(sweet&sour pork) it was really hard. Over cooked or not fresh. Jjajangmyon(black bean noodles) it was the most terrible taste from the day. Others from my table also said same thing. read more
