The Mariner is surely one that climbs the charts with their warm ambience, friendly staff and impeccable service... and to mention, delicious food. This local eatery quickly became a staple and tradition for my annual visits to Mystic. Whether having a few drinks or there to dine, always a great experience. This most recent time, strictly there to have what I would boldly claim to be, the absolute best New England Clam Chowder I have ever tasted. Mystic is a tourist town, but I would weigh other options for eateries in the area. We had a party of 5, and I ordered fried mozzarella as my entree, (categorized as a starter) and was served 2 fried mozzarell... If the main course portion is two, the table would've been served 2 for 5 people. This was $15 as well. I was left hungry but I would not order another, as I don't want to support scammers, so I'd highly recommend The engine room, across the drawbridge with exceptional food and frankly better prices. Was visiting mystic and saw the sign for best lobster rolls so decided to check it out The bun was toasted nicely and they filled it up with the lobster which I appreicate. I felt like it was lacking in flavor a bit as there was only a hint of butter but squeezing some lemon on top made this an enjoyable meal. The fries were floppy and seemed under fried The fried calmari came with banana peppers which is SUCH a great combo, it helps balance the fried batter. Calamari was also very tender Seafood pasta was the favorite of the day, filled with lobster, mussels and shrimp in a sweet tomato sauce. The pasta is also handmade and you can tell by the taste. This restaurant has a nice atmosphere and friendly service but unfortunately most of the food did not deliver. I will say my caesar salad with added shrimp was very good. My mom said her crab cake was very salty and my dad ordered the New England clam chowder but was served the creole seafood chowder. He ate it anyway and said it was decent. No one was crazy about their entrees. The fish and chips were a bit greasy. The baked fish lacked any flavor and all the fries were a bit greasy as well. We decided against dessert. This was our second time here and I can't say if we will be back again. We really enjoyed all the food for first visit but now it seems that the food has changed. read more

We ate here 7 years ago and my husband lived the clam chowder. We are paying through to PEI, Canada and had to stop again. He said the chowder was better than he remembered. Our son had the seafood pot pie and loved it. I had the crab cake and it was marvelous. I hope to stop again in less 7 years. Try them, Also the crab cake, shredded crab formed almost like a burger, 1/4 lb, on a bed of fresh arugula. My wife had the filet tips mashed potatoes and green beans. Along with my old fashioned and her margarita . My wife's first words were 'I can cut this filet with a butter knife', I had some it was perfect. My crab cake was broiled perfectly. The lobster roll contained just a hint of its main ingredient. The haddock dinner's side of mashed potatoes was far more abundant than the main course. The Mariner is easily one of the best seafood restaurants I can recommend, and it deserves every bit of a five-star rating. I started with the crab cake, and it was outstanding--one of the best I've ever had, almost on par with the ones I've had in the harbor of Baltimore. Fresh, flavorful, and clearly made in-house. From there, the meal only got better. The entrée was six enormous sea scallops, perfectly cooked--juicy, fresh, and lightly battered so the natural sweetness came through. They were paired with equally tasty, crispy French fries that hit all the right notes. For dessert, I had fresh berries with cream over a biscuit-like base, which was simple, elegant, and absolutely delicious. I paired the meal with a refreshing Vermont hard cider, which tied everything together beautifully. The hospitality matched the food. The waitress was warm, accommodating, and attentive without being overbearing. Even the manager stopped by to check in, which really made the meal feel personal and welcoming. Everything here is fresh, made in-house, and prepared with obvious care and quality. Bottom line: The Mariner is a true gem in Mystic. From the food to the service, everything exceeded expectations. So we 3 were excited to eat here last night. First cocktails , The Riverside 75, A Cosmo, & Pinot Grigio. All fair. Starters; Fried Calamari & Baked Clams DELICIOUS! Ugh For my order, I just ate the Sea scallops which were very good but quite small as were hers. We called over the waitress told her what we found she promptly took back her dish. Then the manager came over and said what can he do for us ??? YOU TELL ME! so they remade her dish ( mind you we were all done eating by the time her dinner came out). THEN we had to wait for her to eat and the manager gave my daughter ONE FREE DRINK , for the hair inconvenience ! Not the 3 of us ! Just her, 1 free drink! Need I say more. Best brussel sprouts I've ever had! We shared a lobster roll and they were generous with the lobster! I'm so glad we shared because I wouldn't have been able to finish one on my own! This is one of our go to restaurants in Mystic. It has been reliable serving fresh seafood. In this occasion we had the oysters ( east coast ) which were fresh and briny as they should be. Skillfully shucked. . We also had clams on the half which were excellent. My wife had the mussels which were quite large ( mussel size) and the sauce contained a bit of mustard which she wasn't expecting but really liked. I had the beet and mozzarella salad.
