This felt like a full circle moment for me - I worked as a dishwasher for a hot second at the Oyster House back in college (the forefather of this establishment), but I never actually ate there or at the Milford House until now. I think it's a little tough to live up to the hype as the best restaurant in town - which is sometimes the result of the price point versus the quality of the offerings - but this is a noble contribution to the area. I came here for dinner last Saturday with my parents - they actually did eat at the Oyster House once or twice in the 90s, but this was everyone's debut at the Milford House. The entrance location is a little awkward; the door facing the road and the most obvious place to enter is not utilized by customers. You have to go around the building to enter through the backdoor, briefly through a more blue-collar bar area, and then into the rustic, more formal dining area. Huge points in their favor - despite the white tablecloths, they didn't even hesitate to let me in with my beach shorts and tank top (it was sweltering out, in my defense). Hunterdon County hospitality right there. To that end, our waitress was excellent. She was super personable/friendly, and I also don't recall a significant wait time for anything. Top-notch service, so at the very least this place is a recommend on that basis alone. Since I wasn't paying, I went for the Milford Old-Fashioned (I think $12ish), along with the Wild Boar Meatball app ($6) and the Crab Norfolk (about $42). I couldn't decide how I ultimately felt about this, but you can't really pre-game your dinner options here - every day, the Milford House posts their dinner menu on their Facebook page around noon. On one hand, I kind of love that the menu is different every day, but I wish you had a little more advance notice to make an educated dinner decision. I lean towards liking it, even though it meant I had to dust off my Facebook account as part of the process. (I moved to Instagram several years ago so I could look at dog pictures instead of political posts). I really liked the Old-Fashioned, and I'd say it's honestly one of the better ones I've had, likely because of the inclusion of brown sugar, which emphasizes the natural sweetness of the bourbon. I wasn't quite as crazy about the meatballs. Generally I'm massively into wild game, but while the meatballs were tender (my mother said it was because they were heavy on the breading), the meat itself was pretty dry and bland. Also personal palate preference-wise, I'm not crazy about crunchiness in meat, so the inclusion of chunks of onion wasn't one of my favorite decisions here. They weren't terrible by any means, but I doubt I'd order them again. For the size, I think $6 is a magnificent price point though. The Crab Norfolk was excellent. I honestly don't know if $42 for an entree like that is reasonable, but it was a solid serving and given that I've willingly paid $25 for a lobster roll with a fraction of the meat, I don't know that I have grounds to complain (also, as mentioned, not my money! My favorite kind of meal!). Crab always seems to get a rep for being the lower class sibling of lobster, but I think it's usually really tasty. The fresh, crisp pieces of bread it came with complemented the dish well, and it was a little reminiscent of a crab dip/bread setup, though obviously much more higher end. I'd definitely get that again. A meal at an establishment like that could easily set you back $100 or so, but I think it's definitely worth it from time to time. My hometown is unapologetically blue collar for the most part, but it's nice to get a little dollop of the finer things in life every now and then (especially when you can do so in your beach shorts). read more

Nice local place with old bones and nice ambiance. One side is more formal. The other (bar) side is more casual. Their house garlic salad is very tasty, as is the Creamy tomato soup. I have had juicy burgers as well as reliably decent upscale meals in the past. This visit a bit disappointing though. Shrimp tacos were pretty tasteless but what was more surprising was that one taco only had 2 SMALL shrimp while the other had a whopping 3 small shrimp. We are staying at a bed and breakfast across the way. We are personally only doing take out at this time. We placed our order over the phone and it was ready exactly at 5:30pm as promised. Service was great and the food was hot when we got back to our room to eat it. We decided to share the NY Strip steak with fries and asparagus. I know it is a meal intended for one person but the steak was at least 1/3 fat cap and literally 5 spears of asparagus and 12 fries. Again, I know for one person but potatoes are cheap they could spared a few more. The steak was nothing to write home about at $42. NYC prices in small town NJ are fine by me if the quality is there. The fries were the best part and I just wish there were more of them. read more

This place is wonderful. The menu changes fluidly but there are fan favorite staples that stick around. The beer selection will keep you on your toes but never disappoints, the cocktails are always what you want or didn't think you'd love, and the atmosphere is uncanny. My wife and I have been here many times, even holding our engagement party here, and we have never left thinking "gee that could have been better." We always depart with a belly full of top tier food and a jar full of laughs. The folks that run this place are the warmest, kindest, most generous people I've ever met. You'll agree when you meet them, which is likely on any given night. Any negative reviews either came from a randomly bad night or from a butt-hurt loser who thinks they're a foodie. If you go into anything with perfect expectations, you'll leave upset no matter what. But you can expect a great time here. Exceedingly great food, great atmosphere, great service, every time. Love love love this place. Beautiful old Mill building in the lovely river town of Milford. Full bar and light fare available in the tavern room and extensive menu in the dining room. You can never go wrong with any seafood option on their menu. The Seafood bouillabaisse is huge and fresh and excellent. They have a wide variety of oysters and I recommend them highly. They also serve a Piedmontese beef that is exceptional. Rare finds that aren't always on the menu are "hog wings" which are split pork shanks done in a sumptuous glaze. Indescribably delicious. If they have the Lyonnaise potatoes on the menu, you have to try them. One hint is to make sure your entree comes with a side or that you order one. Most sides are large enough to serve two people. Service is always friendly and professional. We will definitely include this as a destination spot for dining. read more

Clams casino appetizer was 95% breading/filler and they had no Sherry as a side - the waitress had no clue what Sherry even was let alone that it is commonly offered for seafood dishes. With the switchover from The Milford Oyster House to the new owners of The Milford House, we couldn't have been more pleased with our dining experience. Beautiful space, fantastic service and most of all...the best food we've had in the area in a while. We started with the broiled oysters and the cheese plate. The broiled oysters appetizer was sumptuous and the cheese plate was huge and delicious. I had the hanger steak and it was cooked to perfection and tasted fantastic. I didn't get to taste my husband's cod, but it was a generous portion and looked light and flaky. They had a special biscuit and local berries for dessert, so we both had that (and we were very glad we did...perfectly fresh local berries on a freshly cooked "biscuit). The restaurant is a beautiful setting in a gorgeous, less-known river-town and we were treated extremely well by the staff. One of the best eating experiences in a while...we will be back soon because this kind of dining doesn't need to be just for special occasions. read more

Not a bad place. Considering what other "bars" there are in Milford, I'd choose the one where the beer don't taste like nothin good and lacks consistency and yet this is a "brew pub" where as the Milford House is very easy going, the food relatively a little more on the pricey side but won't break the bank and will leave you satisfied. Not like other places where you've overpaid for a terrible dining experience: food, atmosphere, service, and drink. What a wonderful evening! I love fried oysters, and I make pretty good ones at home, so I can appreciate good preparation. I was warmly greeted by Matt, who gave me a beautiful table in the bar. I was impressed by the ambiance in the area, and I was also impressed by the list of the different oysters that were available. I love the historic building and setting in the town of Milford. So quaint and charming. From my perspective, the Milford House has not lost a step from it's prior incarnation as the Milford Oyster House. Food selections are good, both fish and meat. My crab stuffed flounder was very good, as was my spinach salad. Wine selection is good and very reasonably priced. My husband loved his oysters and fisherman's stew. Though entrees are a la carte, sides are VERY generous and can easily be shared by two or more. Service is good, and the bar is fun. Definitely recommend. read more

Although we got our food in a reasonable time frame - 1/2 hr., once we said we didn't want anything else, we couldn't find our server or anyone for 25 min. My spouse finally went inside and asked for the check - 5 min later our server appeared with it. After I placed my credit card on it, I waited 15 minutes - still no one. Fantastic menu with LOTS of options, appetizers, salads, entrees, light fare and pizza! We had the Crab Panzenella Salad - it was excellent, chock full of LUMP CRAB MEAT! I had the Tuna Tacos, I passed on the french fries and they added a veggie for no additional cost. My husband got the Cod it was perfectly cook! The dessert list is interesting filled with great choices that you don't always see - coconut custard pie, a root beer float (w/alcohol) and homemade ice cream! The servers were super friendly! After a 2 1/2 year hiatus, the hubs and I ventured back to the Milford House. It was his birthday so his choice. I'm very happy to report that the establishment has shrugged off it's growing pains! The overall experience was greatly improved. While the ala carte menu still disappoints me, the food itself was nearly as delish as the olden days. . The oysters are still the star attraction IMO but we enjoyed everything else we ate from apps to entrees to dessert! We're so glad the staff and kitchen have matured into a seasoned, well-oiled, lovely, tasty experience. We will be back for sure. And I apologize that I can't recall exactly what we ate (other than the 40+ oysters - it's just our thing) or the name of our server but she was wonderful as well! Gladly adding 3 stars. read more

The food really isn't anything "special". Would only go on a Monday, do to $1 oysters. But beware, if you are not there at 5pm, when they open, do not expect to order oysters. They will be gone. Also, Ran out of salmon, and the smash burger. I ordered the "CHEF's CHOICE" special/surprise. SURPRISE! A piece of swordfish approximately, and I am not exaggerating, 1/4 " thick. Really? carpaccio of swordfish, maybe. And again, it wasn't good. Tasted like it was pulled from a freezer in which it founded a home months prior. It was very slow in service, but I do understand. Nice bar to have cocktails and meet prior to going out to dinner at a nearby restaurant. And, it wasn't cheap. 2 stars because I want them to succeed. Been there, done that, for 30 years, 3 restaurants, all 4 Diamond, 4 Star restaurants, because.....I cared and sacrificed to be the best. Went to Milford House for lunch. Very disappointing. My friend and I were the only ones in restaurant for most of the time til another couple came in. Service was extremely slow and poor. We both ordered avocado salad. Waitress came out said only one left. We ordered tomato bisque. Very small with no bread or crackers. Had to ask for coffee. Waitress never asked if we wanted more. And, the bill was enormous. Surprised at all the great reviews. read more

My wife and I have been coming to the Milford House forever I think. We were hoping for the best when the place changed hands a few years ago and it has gone very well, still our favorite seafood restaurant in the area. Not only do they have a great selection of oysters but over the years I believe they taught me most of what I know about them. Great bartender and food. When we were there last week I had some Katama and Lucky Lime oysters, two varieties I haven't tried before, and both were firm, salty , and sweet, just how I like 'em. Only been here a few times since the new owners took over. We went last night with some friends and wanted to show some love especially since the Summer season is starting. The Dinner experience last night was excellent. We chose to sit in the dining room and the service and food were both top notch. I recommend the Oysters from NJ and the seafood stew. The filet special and the duck entrees were also amazing. You can also get lighter fare in the dining room now which we like as an option. Place is friendly and romantic for couples on dates. We only live 5 minutes away but totally recommend The Milford House to visitors of the Delaware River towns. If you are coming on a weekend night I would call ahead to make a reservation in the dining room. read more

We just had - yet another amazing dinner at The Milford House! We have been coming here for the last two years many times and the meals we have enjoyed have consistently thrilled us! The setting is intimate and comfortable - or you can sit in the bar for a more lively and friendly experience. The fresh oysters are a must! Tonight we also enjoyed the mussels appetizer which was out of this world - cooked perfectly and served with an incredible tarragon cream sauce. Dinner was equally amazing - we also enjoyed a very reasonably priced lovely bottle of wine. The service is like coming home for a holiday dinner. We were warmly welcomed and treated like family. At last a home-town warm, upscale, quiet, classy, private place to dine with linens, very fine food, prep, presentation, service, quality provisions including fresh oysters, decent wine, varied and changing menu, and all at prices that make us regulars. We are greeted as welcomed guests and afforded our privacy. I'd go almost daily if I could, but my wife requires some variation! I just can't say enough good things. When I try to think of something to add or change, it becomes difficult. Here's one: offer one or two upscale 1/2 bottles of cabernet, so we can enjoy a fine wine at a more affordable price. I understand problems restaurants suffer offering half bottles: they tend to go bad (air volume to liquid ratio is higher for half bottles), they walk, and it's difficult to find good wine in half bottles.
