WOW we weren't going to let these hateful unprofessionals ruin our vacation. The minute we walked in it was full on negative energy starting from the blond waitress glaring at us as we tried to enter the restaurant bar. She almost ran over a couple tables insisting we have a seat outside almost forcing us to except that we must be outside? I dont know why it was so urgent for us to dare go straight to the bar like most restaurants let you do? As we approached the bar (which was empty) the bartender woman glared at us as if we just ruined her day. We asked if we could have a drink which is an odd question at a bar but we were thrown off and confused. She said shed have to clean off the bar first with an attitude as if we were walking in at closing time, she was very pissed off. We all immediately looked at each other like "what the f*#k did we do"? I said lets get the hell out because I guess they dont want to make any money. During this incident, my husband was in the bathroom so my friends left and I waited for him to come out of the bathroom to let him know we were not staying. As I waited, the bartender angrily told the waitress she cleaned the bar off for nothing and we were leaving...as if the bar was never going to be cleaned at all for the rest of the day. (by the way it was afternoon). She made sure she was loud enough for us to hear it. As we left there must have been some locals eating there who made some snotty comments at us because they saw the situation as it grew. Hey, they can have their restaurant....remember this is a tourist town but whatever? We will be coming back to Crown King but will be frequenting the Saloon down the way, had no issues there and they were very welcoming and the food was good. Good times there. read more

I'm sitting at the "Back Bar" of the "Mill" restaurant right now and it's the first time in the 10 years that I have been visiting Crown King that I have visited the "Mill" restaurant. It wasn't until tonight that I learned from Mike who works here that there are 2 types of people who come to the restaurants up here in Crown King. Mikes philosophy about those two types of people made me understand why I've never been to the Mill before tonight and why Im never coming back... If you've never been to the Mill restaurant before, then you might be like me approaching the place for the first time at 4:30 pm on a Saturday, wondering why you have never come here before now. You're trying to find the first set of doors that's made for customers to walk through and isn't a decoration when a beautiful server might welcome you through the side door to the front bar where you place your first order and open a tab. You might then take your drink from the front bar to meet your friends at the Back Bar and start to wonder what kind of confusion might come from ordering in the front and hanging out in the back. You find your friends in the Back Bar, chill for minute, then go back to the front bar to place another order. A man sitting on the customer side of the front bar asks what he can do for you. You might start to place your order from the man (who you're not really sure if he works here) when the beautiful server returns behind the bar to serve you. Not too much confusion yet and so far so good. Returning to the Back Bar to enjoy your second order, you find your friends with an entertainer claiming to be Elvis Presleys son joking with everyone over a very sophisticated platter of food from the Mill's chef. His food looks delish and by this time (about 5 pm) you might be feeling like ordering some chicken strips off the menu at one of the Back Bar tables. So you head to the front bar where you've got your tab open to place your order. You attempt an order of chicken strips from the front bar's beautiful server who says theres none of those for sale. The only menu items available are on the dry erase marker board menu that Mike has just finished creating. If you're like me you express your confusion to Mike about the chicken strips on the Back Bar menu being unavailable to you at the front bar where you have your tab. Then Mike will coldly respond to you "Don't be confused. There's two kinds of people who visit the restaraunts in Crown King. There's the people who like to spend money and order food from the Mill restaurant. And then there's the drunks who like to be loud and puke on each other at the restaurants in town." (the town which is right across the street from the Mill restaurant) "The menu items available to you are here on this board." If you're a patient person like me who likes to visit Crown King restaurants to order food and hang out with friends, you may just advise Mike "Let me close my tab here and return to my kind in the Back Bar". But if you like to vist Crown King restaurants to spend money, then you may have gone ahead and placed your order from Mike's marker board. Upon advising Mike of your choice he may attempt to correct the situation with "Im not trying to f#@$ with you. The Back Bar just became part of the Mill restaurant a week ago and we still don't know how we're operating it." Short story long, if you're like me and you've never visited the Mill restaurant in the 10 years you've been coming to Crown King, then you might feel like the new Back Bar at the Mill restaurant is your kind of place. Thankfully Mike now has set aside a place at the Mill restaurant called the Back Bar that's just for people like us. According to Mike's philosophy me, my friends, and maybe you are the kind of people who visit Crown King restaurants to be loud and puke on each other. Now, instead of feeling excluded from visiting the Mill restaurant with the people who like to visit Crown King restaurants to spend money, we have the Back Bar at the Mill as another option besides in town where we can fit in with the other kind of people. Just make sure to open your tab in the back to avoid all the confusion. read more

The Mill in Crown King is amazing. You are transported back in time and welcomed with open arms. The owners are fabulous and involved in every aspect, and the food is amazing!! After a long day of dusty trail riding you can still come in for a gourmet meal with fresh homemade bread. Had filet mignon and shrimp scampi and both were amazing (as usual) We eat out quite a lot in the valley and I can honestly say that the meal I get at the Mill is only second to Flemings! Love the sassy servers!! It's a rustic town so be prepared for the local flavor and not some snotty kiss-butt servers! LOVE The Mill and will always return!! Good food but bad service , the ladies there acted like they had to help us , through our plates on the table fries all over the table I don't know if it's because they think their semi attractive that they don't have to do their job or have good manners maybe on drugs or alcohol don't know , I will not be back I will take lunch next time I have to go to Crown King it's an unfortunate thing but if anyone asked me it will be the Mill Restaurant has bad service and to not go there maybe the restaurant at the bar in town is better thank you read more

Drove down Senator Hwy from Prescott and had lunch. Two of us are vegetarians and ordered the veggie melt. It was adequate (although could've been improved by melted swiss rather than the sprinkling of queso fresco). OTOH, our carnivore companion had a patty melt and swore it was the best burger she'd ever had! Presumably home-made potato salad and cole slaw were great, but ice tea was so weak it could've been colored water. read more

What a great place. I read some of the reviews and I think people forget that they are in the middle of no where in the mountains. The historical building is cool and the service is fun and fits the experience. Have been there many times and also they have stayed open for us late in summer as we do an annual night ride on motorcycles up the back way. I drove up here with my husband via Lake Pleasant while on a four-wheel drive adventure. The food was good. The service from the wait staff was a roll of the dice. The two women working this day seemed to have a tag-team system in place as they both helped us throughout the meal. The blonde woman was very friendly, talkative and fun to interact with. However, the brunette woman was curt, rude and somewhat cranky. The food was good and the beer bread was outstanding. I would have given a five-star review if the cranky wait staff had been a little more pleasant. read more

How's the food here? No idea! Saturday afternoon about 2PM we were seated quickly and server brought our drink order. The server did not come back for over an hour. We "waved" her back to our table and asked her to check on our food order but she never came back again. We got up and went to the register and told them why we were leaving. We were there this past weekend with a large group of friends. The place was cute, our waitress was horrible. I don't know her name because she never gave it to us. She was a young, very thin girl with long dark hair. We explained to her that although we were a large group (14 people) we needed separate checks. She told us "no" and said we would have to figure it out. One of our party didn't realize that the waitress brought out a pitcher of tea, he was on his cell phone and asked her for a refill. She responded by telling him to get off the phone and pay attention!! This was really just a continuation of her negative attitude and poor customer service! The place is nice and if in the area, we would surely return, but certainly not have her as our waitress again! read more

After a morning drive from Prescott we ended up at The Mill. We were greeted by Audra, she was warm welcoming and a bit sassy. Its a destination spot - needing some sassiness! There were 5 adults and 2 children in our party. We enjoyed that they had good beers on tap and a good lunch menu with several options. Although most of us went for the burgers. All of the burgers were cooked perfectly and the tomatoes, lettuce, onions etc. were all fresh and good. The only thing that could of used help was the Fries...soggy and a bit greasy. A children's menu - even if its limited, would be good too. Other than that, the Mill is a fun place to enjoy Crown King and the service was great! read more

The Mill is awesome!, this is true Crown King Experience in this rustic no fluff restaurant, the waitresses are awesome & make you feel at home with alittle bit of attitude and down home friendliness. The food is very tasty, we enjoy all the menu choices My husbands favorite meal here is the open face Reuben and mine is the chile mushroom burgers moist and delicious plus of course the fries are really good. Absolutely the Worst burgers ever! Zero is a better rating. Cooked well done (but we weren't sure when, we never heard or smelled a grill) and served room temp with cold unmelted shredded cheese. Fries had obviously been cooked twice,burned, and were still served cold. Cook?/owner? came out to proudly enquire about what had to be the crappiest food we'd ever been served and we were about to refuse the meal and realized there would be problems. Trying to celebrate our friends birthday we gritted our teeth, got ripped for almost $100 and learned to look very very carefully at reviews next time... (One noted the excellent lodging where none ever existed) A parking lot conversation with the other couple that left when we did revealed they too were going refuse till they overheard us decide not to and all agreed the best thing was not to return to what is obviously a failed attempt at a diner that has old mine equipment as the draw. Took husband and the kid here last weekend because yung T (I will call her that here) was in need of a Shirley Temple and a quick potty break before camping. Taking off a star because one server gave us directions and we ended up surrounded by wolves with a flat tire up in the mountain. We are from Wisconsin and stay the winter in Surprise. During our three winters here, we have taken the trip to Crown King seven times and have eaten at the Mill each time. We wouldn't miss it. The chili is awesome, and just like at home, it may taste a little different each time but it is great (lunchtime). The chili was a little different once, so the cook came out and sat down with us for a chit chat. On weekends the menu varies and the food was delicious as usual - the cook once again came out and spoke to us and to our surprise he spoke Phillipine to our Phillipine friend, We love the rustic charm and the antiquity of this place, it's homely and different and takes you to a different place in time. The bathrooms could be improved a bit but I chalk it up to the rustic atmosphere. We won't stop going there ever. We love this little town and the Mill, to us, is worth every penny. read more

BEWARE we just went there and I ordered my food which I am allergic to peppers so I asked them if they could take them out and she said no problem. When I got my food there was peppers and so of course I told her and when she got done arguing with me about them not being peppers (Philly Cheese) which they were for sure! The cook brought it to the table. I don't know why but me and my husband notice a weird look about him, just sensed something. Couple hours later I came down with the worst stomach pain I have ever had in my life right up there with having kids. I also was vomiting and having stool issues I Believe that he might have given me some visine on my food a couple drops cause the same symptoms and today I feel great just loose bowels. I am following up with a doc on this because if ingested with other meds and can cause death and or other serious complications. So BEWARE and don't send food back there if you can avoid it. read more

Since we were not able to try the food this is all I can give, my partner in crime and I decided to take a day drive up from the valley and found this cool little place since it was lunch time and we wanted a cold drink, we meandered in to check it out well this is what we found the inside was awesome and the bar looked really cool. It was a really nice day outside so we chose to sit at one of the tables outside that had a great view and umbrellas ( I looked around to see if there were smaller tables since it was just two of us however the only one I could find was dirty and had no view or shade) no sooner had we started to sit at one of the bigger tables when the waiter came over and asked us if we would sit at one of the 2 person tables, he said they had 2 then I realized one was the one I looked at earlier and the 2nd was tucked into the corner of the building I'm like thats crazy since right next to the crappy tables was a man with his two dogs at a 4 person table. long story short I'm glad in the long run this waiter did this because #1 I will never be back and #2 we had a great time at the Crown King Saloon we got to sit wherever we wanted AND we got to see the memorial day parade..... read more

I have been driving up to Crown King for a number of years on the trails from Lake Pleasant. Its been in past years that I enjoyed spending time at the Mill, but my experience this past weekend changed all that. I traveled up to Crown King with a group of nine people. It was later in the evening when we decided to get something to eat at the Mill, and were immediately disrespected by ALL staff members when we arrived. The server was rude, the bar tender was rude, and the cook was rude. One of the guests at my table requested a burger, but was told no when that's what the Mill is most credited for. It was only when we explained to the cook that we were prepared to spend $300.00 that he soon made an exception. The poor service continued throughout the meal and actually got worse. If this type of behavior were to take place in a Phoenix restaurant, the staff would have been fired on-the-spot. For a community that partially thrives on money spent by visitors, the staff at the Mill showed little concern. I will never go back, and would not recommend it to anyone else. My party went across the street to the bar where the service was much better. read more

My son and I enjoyed a visit to the mill today. We nearly froze to death getting there on our bikes, but sitting next to the old boiler fireplace we warmed up and enjoyed an excellent burger and the best greasy fries I've ever had. We will certainly return! read more

Thank God the food was good, because the service was absolutely horrible! We visited The Mill last Saturday (May 28th,) and were appalled by the lack of professionalism with the servers. One of the female servers was not only too young to serve, but she had absolutely no idea what she was doing. Luckily enough, the other server had obviously smoked one too many bowls, overly friendly and in la-la land. Just a personal choice, but if I drive this far to check out a restaurant, I expect the service to match the food...if I wanted to listen to a couple teenagers get high and act like children, I would go back to high school. read more

We went all the way to Crown King yesterday just to try this restaurant and we literally had not one person say one word to us for the 30 minutes we were there. We had to figure out for ourselves that it was "self seating" and when we sat ourselves the waitress that was waiting on the tables around us didnt even acknowledge us much less ask us if we wanted anything. It was the "if I dont look at them they wont ask me anything " attitude. We didnt even get a "Ill be with you in a second" . This waitress had black hair with green coloring in the front. Then another waitress came to our "area" and starting waiting on the people near us that just arrived. We were once again ignored. We finally had to leave that place and were disgusted and pissed. We went to a general store near the retaurant and got ourselves some drinks and chips and headed down the hill with our tails between our legs. We did learn at the general store that alot of people go through the same experience as we did so I decided to post on here to let others know. If I had read a review like the one I am posting now I would never have bothered with going all the way down there to eat. read more
