We had dinner on Sunday evening and the place was largely empty, both the bar up front as well as the huge capacity dining room in the back. I think there were three or four other tables throughout our dinner. The food was good. I wouldn't say great but it wasn't bad. Stopped into The Milling Room for Saturday brunch and was met with a light, airy space with tasty food and attentive service. The avocado toast was fresh and delicious, although I would have loved a mixture of greens, additional toppings, and/or more dressing on the side salad. Egg sandwich was yummy and filling. After a long morning at the natural history museum, we were *hungry.* I was delighted when my husband told me that he had secured a brunch reservation at the Milling Room. When we rolled up it did look empty, though. But once we were shown to our table, you see that the place is really expansive. The room is gorgeous and really spacious. I love the decor and styling. But, the food did not hit. I can only speak to the brunch menu, but I was not impressed. The highlight was the pastry basket, with croissants and pain au chocolat. Oh and the orange juice was top notch! We ordered the french toast, waffle, egg sandwich, and the salmon pate. The french toast and waffle come with fruit and some homemade whipped cream. This is a nice touch, but not enough to redeem the items. The waffle was truly so bland. My husband loved his egg sandwich, but it was super expensive for what it was. And my FIL felt that the salmon pate was not really much of a pate. That being said, it's very convenient to the park and the museum. I might try it again for lunch or dinner. read more

The Restaurant With No Food. This was honestly one of the funniest experiences of my adult life. The ambiance was amazing but it took 2.5 hours to be served 4 incomplete courses of a $350 prefixe meal on Valentines Day. The food was good but the portions were so small that my girlfriend and I could not stop laughing. By the time we received two of the three deserts I paid for, after not receiving on of the "snacks" and one of the "appetizers", we were in tears with laughter. The waitstaff was very polite, even though they had almost nothing to serve. The C Battery sized scallop cannoli appetizers (which tasted amazing) arrived in an oversized clamshell on top of a napkin, on a tea saucer, in a bowl! A for effort on the presentation but it definitely was overkill. We never got the Red Snapper and broth. The Lamb Wellington (again, tasted amazing) couldn't fill your imagination. The apple tart (about the size of a Reeses Peanut Butter Cup) also tasted amazing. However, it came with a 2 foot apple peel fruit roll up as a garnish which tasted great but after such a long wait for food, I couldn't help but yell out "this better not be paper!" Most people would be furious but this truly felt like an episode of Seinfeld. Kramer trying to explain to George how it was about the experience. George yelling "but there was no food!". Jerry going "eh, ya kinda need food if you're gonna call yourself a restaurant!" Elaine agreeing with Jerry. Several couples walked out after sitting at a table for over an hour with just drinks. Some tables were fortunate enough to have enough money to splurge on the $6 bread basket that was not included in the price. We laughed so hard at the entire affair that we didn't even mind being held hostage for two and a half hours. To top it off, we were given two complimentary glasses of champagne. My girlfriend is allergic to champagne and the waiter walked away so fast he didn't even hear me say it. We had an amazing experience at The Milling Room. The restaurant is gorgeous! The main dining room is a large room that is bathed in light with the help from skylights. We arrive early to the UWS. Once we checked in at the host stand, we were directed toward the bar. I ordered a scotch, I'm guessing Lagavulin? I ordered it neat and it was smokey, nice starter. We took our drinks and were escorted to the main dining room. We started with a delicious cheese board. The cheese that was chosen was high end, I loved the blue cheese! The roasted beet starter was also a great choice, the beets were sweet, I could eat just this dish and be happy. I ordered the Squid Ink Linguine, another solid dish. The pasta was cooked perfectly, the squid ink pasta has a briny - salty note and the fish made this a treat that was fun to eat. The space is gorgeous, I'll give them that. But it was close to sweltering during our visit, where the exposed windows made it feel even warmer inside. Brunch menu consists of various Benedicts and not enough non-egg items. My lox was really great, and the fries were hot and seasoned well. I remember we had a 9:45pm resv. and were literally the last ones to leave , the staff were so patient and went right along with it, made sure I enjoyed my night. That's rare! The food is always yum! This restaurant is apparently undergoing some significant changes, and from what I can tell, not for the better. I used to come here regularly many years ago when it first opened as the Milling Room. It was outstanding for a long a period of time! I would come here almost every week with my husband. We absolutely loved it. At a certain point, however, it declined significantly, after a chef change and other changes. Since that time, I've come here sporadically at best. I have just kept hoping that it would get better again. No such luck. The atmosphere is great, which is what draws me back but it's unfortunately never returned to what it once had been in terms of food quality. That all being said, I decided to give it another shot tonight. It's now apparently amidst changing names to Comete in the near future but supposedly not new ownership. It was a completely different (and unbelievably minuscule) menu. I don't have high hopes for its future. I'd say it's on borrowed time. I sat at the bar for dinner. I ordered a lemon drop martini, and the bartender did an excellent job with it. The bartender was very nice, and I certainly don't hold him responsible for the poor quality food that followed. I ordered a radicchio salad and lobster ravioli. The radicchio salad came out with gobs of fennel, an ingredient that was not listed on the menu. This is a common problem with restaurants and a big irritation of mine. List all of the ingredients if you are going to list any of them! I hate fennel with a passion. I was going to try to just work around it, but it was sort of impossible to do so. I told the server, and he removed the salad and took it off the bill. He graciously offered to give me a replacement salad with no fennel, but I was so damn irritated by this point I declined. Not his fault, but I was pissed off. For an entrée, I ordered the lobster ravioli. To be fair, I have rarely had this entrée anyplace where I've thought it was anything special. For some dumb reason, I keep trying it! Call me a slow learner. Sadly, the Milling room (a.k.a. Comete) was no exception. As per usual, the lobster was barely discernible. To add to the fun, some of the ravioli had an unpleasant taste, distinctly different from other pieces -- clearly a function of the lobster in those pieces. It immediately made me think that the lobster might not have been consistently fresh in the entree. Sigh. Hopefully I won't be sick later this evening. The other pieces of ravioli were okay, aside from the aforementioned issues. And another issue... this was an entrée priced at $38. It was smaller than most pasta starter portions at a typical Italian restaurant! I'm really not exaggerating. I left the restaurant and went someplace else for more food after having spent $60 for a lemon drop martini and a paltry quantity of mediocre, at best, lobster ravioli. It's a shame because this restaurant has a beautiful bar and used to be absolutely phenomenal. Not surprisingly, it wasn't that busy tonight. Apparently others have also realized the decline. I don't have high hopes for the future of Comete. Go elsewhere... Don't waste your money and your time. read more

Another 5 star experience! Great decor, food, service, and atmosphere. When you enter the main dinning room you feel like you are watching a movie shot in Manhattan. Warm, sophisticated and our server Kyle was great. Very caring, no time limits here at all. It was a great night with friends and everything went right. We ordered a few appetizers including the beet salad, Burrata salad, the salmon tartare and the risotto. The risotto was so good we ordered one as a side for the table to share. For main courses we had the Squid Ink Linguini with shrimp, the halibut, the Chatham codfish. For desert had the apple tart. Spent about 2 1/2 relaxed non rushed hours here. Great menu, wine and beer and drink selection, great bar. The staff were really awesome and it was a great night. I highly recommend them. read more

The Milling Room is such a lovely restaurant in UWS. I love the beautiful, open, spacious dining area. I came for brunch with a friend and we had a very comfortable dining experience, with their large tables spaced out nicely and high ceilings. At many other restaurants in the city, tables are right next to each other, so we really liked how the tables were spread out and we could enjoy a conversation without having to yell over other voices. I ordered the Creamy Risotto ($21+), with asparagus, English peas, fava beans and parmigiano. It had a poached egg on top, which was nice. The dish itself was a bit bland, though. I would recommend asking for extra parmesan. I would love to make this one of my go-to brunch spots, but will need to find a dish I really like. read more

After many years , after a bad experience, we gave Milling Room another try. The restaurant had one person at the bar and three tables had people, we made four tables occupied. Yes Tuesday night after a snow storm. One person ordered as a main course a sweet potato with mushrooms and steamed oinions wrapped around, for $34.00. The other ordered a steak, most expensive entree. The food arrived, temperature on both was room temperature. Both tasty, sweet potato should have been no more than $20.00 for size and what it cost for them to purchase, portion should have been an appetizer. The steak tasted good but should have not have been room temperature. The waiter asked when we were almost finished " how was everything?" I answered, "tasty but room temperature not hot". Waiter answers, " if I served it hot you could have burned yourself." I eat out about four times a week and last week had a steak at a steak house, the waiter said,"please be careful the plate is hot". Steak was terrific. Most of the time when I'm in NYC, I'm never on the UWS. A friend recommended the Milling Room and my friends and I were not disappointed. When you enter the restaurant the first thing that you will see is a big bar area. Go up the stairs behind the hostess stand and you walk into a large dining room with a big skylight. The natural light makes for the best décor. The room has great vibe with the light and even at night it still feels bright and airy. We started with the grilled octopus and hamachi crudo. My favorite was the Hamachi. For dinner, I opted for the roast duck. It was cooked to perfection (medium rare) and I have to say - one of the best roast duck dishes I have had in a long time. My friends decided to go the pasta route with one getting the veal bolognese and the other the squid ink pasta. For dessert we split the apple tarte tatin. My only complaint was the service...really just our server. Everyone else was great. While a very nice person, our server just vanished for most of the night and didn't really come back to check on us. We had to flag down the sommelier to get our second bottle of wine and continually asked the bus boys and other servers, "do you know where our server is"? Despite the poor service, I would still come back for the atmosphere and great food. read more

She did a great job checking in on us and bringing more drinks. Had a few drinks and a lot of dessert. Main course was decent - had the Ricotta Gnocchi. But most memorable would be the desserts. Tried a few: pistachio creme brulee( this was nice and light),chocolate cake (was good, but may have been a bit on the richer side for me), apple tart(nothing to write home about), passion fruit panna cotta(it's good if you like tart from passion fruit). The Milling Room is a lovely spot to dine. It has elegant living room vibes, with spacious bookshelves and books adorning various parts of the main dining room, and an open ceiling with windows that supposedly* let an abundance of sunlight in during the day, and allow you to see the stars at night (well, for a city). *Supposedly because when I came with my party, it was a pouring night. The food and beverages were delicious! Drinks: I started with an Apple Cider Manhattan, which did not disappoint. I followed up with a (means "creamy champagne"), which was also great! Apps: they're ALL GOOD! Our table split the Creamy Risotto (wild mushrooms, parmesan, black truffle oil); Burrata & Heirloom Tomato Salad (with basil pesto, sherry reduction); the Duck and Fig Pâté (with pickled onion, whole grain mustard, cornichon, baguette); and the Red Oak Lettuce Salad (with fig, hazelnut, gouda, banyuls vinaigrette). My tablemate got the Salmon Tartare (with avocado, pickled red onions, taro root, cilantro, citrus soy vinaigrette) as her entrée and loved it. Entrées: also delicious! I got the Duck Lumache (with duck confit, caramelized fennel, rosemary breadcrumbs); others got the Squid Ink Linguine Vongole (with littleneck clams, parsley breadcrumbs, calabrian chili oil) (actually used a reasonable amount of the ink-- turned the pasta black!); and the Ricotta Gnocchi (with butternut squash, braised endive, pecorino romano, sage). Desserts: the 2 we tried were lovely! We split 2 for the table: Pistachio Crème Brûlée (with blackberry, mint) & the Banana Sticky Toffee Pudding (Baileys ice cream, candied walnuts, bananas) (it was a toss-up for me between the pudding and the cheese plate, but when I passed it to the group, 2 voices chimes up: "sticky toffee pudding!!"--so that won in a landslide!). Both were delicious! Always respect the "dessert stomach" if you can! The service was mostly good. The staff were all very friendly and they got the orders all correct, despite us having a slightly larger party of 7. Only drawback was that they were a little slow in the second half-- we ordered a second round of drinks slightly before/during the entree delivery, but they didn't arrive until after we had pretty much finished our entrées. We also had to wait a bit longer to get our cheque, though the waitress did say that was because she didn't want to rush us. All in all the food, drinks, and decor were wonderful. My husband and I were having a special dinner to celebrate the life our our dog that we had just lost and we decided to do so at The Milling Room. Everything was just perfect! The food is great, the ambiance is gorgeous and the service was just excellent. We started our meal with cocktails (martini's) which were made to perfection; we also had an appetizer which were these delicious Arancini with porcini and truffle (100% order if they are on the menu) very delicious and the aioli was perfect. For our main courses: I had the gnocchi and I must say it was very delicious and different than any other gnocchi I have ever had! My husband had the roasted chick; I am vegetarian but I tried the mashed potatoes that the chick sat on and they were heavenly! My husband said the chick was cooked to perfection. We also shared the crispy potatoes which were so good! The aioli that they come with is the right amount of spicy. Overall the food was solid. I split the short rib hash and the crispy brussels with my sister. Both were tasty though a bit on the salty side. They tasted better combined as the lemony Brussel sprouts helped lighten up the short rib hash and added a nice acidity to the dish. Service was good and the ambiance was very nice. There is a large skylight which brings in a lot of natural light into the large industrial styled room. I tried a bite of the burger as well. It was surprisingly good... not incredible but I liked the addition of the thousand island dressing. Overall, I will definitely be returning to try their dinner menu. read more

Very mixed thoughts on this restaurant. The ambiance is amazing and a much needed upper scale place to the UWS. If I based my review on that alone, I would rate this 5 stars. The food was also excellent - particularly the squid ink pasta with shrimp. If the shrimp was grilled, it would have been a lot better but the sauce was amazing. The reason I did not rate this 5 stars is because of the service. It was awful. We waited very long for the waiter to address us. Ordered a bottle of wine for the table and not once did someone come over to refill our glasses - we had to do it on our own (which I can do at home). Additionally, we had a 40th birthday guest at our table and I asked to make an obnoxious delivery of the birthday dessert - which someone (not even our waiter) just placed the dessert in front of her and walked away. If you are looking to spend 3 hours at dinner solely because the service is so bad, then this is your place. If you are looking for a normal night out or a birthday dinner - - not your place! read more

Used to be one of our favorite restaurants, but our last meal was terrible. The chawanmushi was nothing like the Japanese dish - was thin and tasteless, we could not finish it. The pappardelle carbonara was a large glob where the pasta and cheese were stuck together and hard to eat - could not finish it. Hard to imagine going back now. read more

The room is tired. I've been coming to this space in its various incarnations for many years and nothing has been changed or brightened. It's needed. More importantly, despite the website, the menu has been greatly limited. This thin offering was explained, with an apology, because it's "under new management." We came to the bar and ordered drinks on the high table by the window, we did not get any service. The drinks took forever and were awful, simply disgusting. They never took our food order. We walked out of the place for the first time, we usually give places the benefit of the doubt, sometimes there're kitchen delays, sometimes things don't run smoothly but to be there for close to an hour without anyone taking our food order and then getting these awful cocktails, it was truly abysmal.
