This place is a bit of my way and it's the second time I order so this will be a true review. The first time it took me back to childhood and the food in my neighborhood pico-union...the pupusas were cooked fully and just right. Today I am taking chicken soup or caldo de Gallina and hope it brings My auntie back to life. She's bounced back before with sea moss, will write about that next. I normally call in my order and they will have it ready for pick up. The place is small, but it does have a homey feel to it. I believe it's family owned. I say that because the gentleman that that's normally there always seems to be friendly/arguing with the woman there and they always make me laugh. The food is pretty much the next best thing to home cooking. They never disappoint. I get a variety of Pupusas some made with maize flour and some with rice flour. Pretty solid pupusas--not the cleanest environment though. I appreciated that there were two menus for both English and Spanish speakers as a large majority of Montebello is primarily Spanish speaking. If I was looking at the restaurant to sit down, I'd see a lot of messy tables--I even saw dead bugs on the floor. Still good pupusas though lol read more

This is a hidden gem! The food is fresh to order. I've only tried the pupusas revueltas and tacos de carne asada. It's a small location but definitely worth a try. It's an interesting combination of different foods. The cooks are really sweet and the gentleman at the register is friendly. There are only about 6 tables with 4 chairs each, but if it's only you and your date it's perfect. The decor is a lot of Salvadoran art and some plates with Salvadoran currency. the mix makes thee best vegetarian pupusas! their curtido and hot sauce are so tasty too. highly recommend you try them out! please remember they don't make them until you order and they do take about 20-25 minutes but it's worth it! read more

I came in here when I saw Salvadorean food--didn't even notice the Hawaiian, that's a pretty cool combo. Anyway, I asked if I needed cash or card and was told that the owner wasn't around and so the employees couldn't use the credit card machine. I was in the mood for pupusas so I got in my car and drove to my bank to get cash out. I came back and my order still wasn't ready which is fine because if it's fresh to order, better for me. I got two pupusas revueltas, yuca frita w/chicarron and horchata. Yooooo, the pupusas were big and tasty (and hot!). I was so sad when I finished the second one because there wasn't anymore left for later. I moved onto the yuca frita and boy was this a bust. The chicharrón was old and gross. I hate throwing out food but that's what I had to do. It looked and tasted like it had been sitting out for days. The horchata was good but a little on the expensive side considering other places sell it for cheaper. read more

good food overall, but the owner and staff tempt to have an attitude problem, my family and I have been customers since they open this place, they honestly need to switch their attitude or get a class in customer service, the owner literally told me to get out when i ask him if me 4year old daughter can use the restroom, he did not only denied us to use the restroom, but he said in order for my daughter to use it i would have to purchase something or place an order, I hope one day you don't go through an emergency with your children or family and get the same treatment you chose to give us! read more

Their Sopa de Pollo is extremely tasty and you get a ton of stuff for $10 (a huge soup, tortillas, rice and a ton of chicken). Arryan Juice is simply incredible and I would go back just for that (not sweet and very unique/refreshing). Yucca Frita con chicarones was pretty tasty. A friend of mine brought in pupusas to work. He said it is a Hawaiian/ Salvadoreno restaurant. I said, "Are you sure?" Sure enough, he was right....Fast forward today, I am enjoying my revuelta, chicken, veggie, squash and cheese pupusas. Que delicioso! (Non meat for my daughter, she concurs with my review.) My wait time was 25 minutes, so I went to a panadería and bought some pan dulce. Sure enough, order took 25 minutes. You can't rush a masterpiece. Be patient, then enjoy. read more

Review #529 None Elite Squad I honestly Don't get the Hawaiian/Salvy Mix..I mean its 2 different styles and even though it's not a fusion i dont get it but that's besides the point. So i was Brought here by a fellow family Member who insisted this was one of the best Salvy Restaurants he has ever eaten at..so we tried it and heres my full review. The Customer Service is good. The Pupusas are Great and heres why.. Even though they're skinny and I guess I can say that from what I'm used to.. the thin dough + lots of filling is a A++ for me cause you taste more of the filling than the Dough and the Dough had great flavor.. the Size was ok.. but still keeping the rating. the Yucca and Chicharon is ok.. the Yucca is dry but like that French fry flavor if only they provided ranch and ketchup with it..the pieces of chicharon was good and liked it. the Chicken Soup is Good..it does not taste Defrosted ..it tasted like if it was done in the moment which I know it wasn't but i didnt get that defrosted taste even though the Soup was boiling hot when I got it. veggies in the soup were just a couple big slices which I'm not a fan of but as far as the broth it was good.. my Negative is the drinks..its not that they were bad..just not fresh if you know what I mean..it didnt taste natural or like if that drink was meant for me..I think I would have been happy with just water..besides you taste the food better. overall I'm gonna give it 4 stars..its really a 4.25 star which means I like it ..I dont ever see myself eating the Hawaiian food, it's a Salvy Restaurant!..theres no Mix.. I was craving pupusas and have passed this place many times before and decided to give it a chance. It is a small family-run restaurant with about 8 tables. I ordered a chicharron and revueltas pupusas. They were large and very tasty; I love the fact that it is not greasy. The chicharron is made of very finely shredded pork and not greasy at all. I loved the generous portions of pickled cabbage and carrots and red sauce. Both were yummy with the right amount of heat. On their window display, they have 99 cents pupusas specials on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but you would have to order a minimum of 6. All was written in Spanish, so I hope I am correct in my translation. I would definitely come back for their pupusas. read more

Five stars, that's right they deserve it they step it up even on dollar Tuesdays and Wednesdays they deserve it. I love the taste of their pupusas here it's amazing not too much masa and just the right amount of flavors and fillings. The man that assisted me was very friendly and he enjoyed talking to me about El Salvador and how he missed it there. It is a good sign to know that the people making my food know what they're doing since they come from El Salvador. The flavors were well developed and had an authentic taste to it. From then I was hooked. Of course other places have some good pupusas but this is all good here so it is on my top choices for Salvadorian cuisine. read more

My coworkers are Salvadorian and were craving pupusas. We chose this place because of the reviews, the photos, and the price. Pupusas are $1.25 each if you order 6 or more. We ordered a lot of stuff to try. We ordered the pupusas revueltas (pork and cheese) and pupusas de calabazas, empanadas de platano, and platano frito con crema and frijoles. All of it was AMAZING. My coworkers said the food was all authentic tasting. Not too much masa in the pupusas and the filling was flavorful. This was my first time trying it and I loved it. So...to whoever gave this place one star, if your stupid self can't even SPELL "pupusa" stfu, you don't know. That's what they're supposed to taste like. And over priced? If it hurts to pay LESS than 2 buck for a pupusa, well...that sounds like a personal financial problem. Good food is worth it. This place is EXCELLENT. Most authentic place in East Los! The service is great, if you are being served you're being served by the owner. Everything here is legit from the AMAZINGLY SAVORY pupusas to the yummy ass empanadas and yucca frita, even my mom can't make them this yummy (but don't tell her!). they get one star because I can't give a negative number!!! They don't warn you there horachata tastes like dirt, and refuse to swap it out for another drink. The pupusas are average, at best. The chatty cathy that works there also makes it unbearable to look at his stupid haircut while hes taking your order. Worst customer service, never going back. Good food and very clean. It is an easy miss as it sits incognito in a strip-mall. The food is fresh and service is quick. There's plenty to choose from the menu. Their rice pupusa is not my favorite but pupusas made from rice flour are not easy to make I imagine. read more
